Reid vs Angle Comes to Capitol Hill

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: The battle between Harry Reid and Sharron Angle for the Nevada Senate seat is playing out today on Capitol Hill. At the center of the feud is Reid’s push for an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. The Senate Majority Leader has been trying for months to overcome a partisan deadlock on the issue, but Republicans have blocked his attempts time and time again. Earlier this month, benefits ran out for around 1.2 million people. This week Reid is taking another stab at it, but with a twist. By combining the reinstatement of unemployment insurance with an extension of the popular homebuyer tax credit, he hopes he can drum up enough support to pass the measure. “It’s the right thing to do, it’s what is needed, and it’s what the people of this country deserve,” he told reporters at a press conference Wednesday in the Capitol. But Angle, his opponent in Nevada, believes jobless benefits should be scaled back, arguing that people get so much money for nothing that they decide not to go back to work. “The truth about it is that they keep extending these unemployment benefits to the point that people are afraid to go out and get a job because the job doesn’t pay as much as the unemployment benefit does and what we really need to do is put people back to work,” Angle told the Las Vegas Sun’s Jon Ralston in an interview on Tuesday. “What has happened is the system of entitlement has caused us to have a spoilage with our ability to go out and get a job,” she said. “There are some jobs out there that are available,” continued Angle. “Because they have to enter at a lower grade and they cannot keep their unemployment, they have to make a choice now. We’re making them make a choice between unemployment benefits and going back to work and working up through the ranks of that job and actually building up a good wage again and building up some seniority. What we need to do is make that unemployment benefit go down, not just completely remove the safety net from them while they go out and go to work.” Nevada, incidentally, has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 14 percent. Unemployment benefits there can range as high as $362 a week. The Senate bill, at a cost of nearly $34 billion, would extend jobless benefits for six months through November at a cost to the deficit of nearly $34 billion. It would also retroactively reinstate benefits for people who lost them when the program ran out at the end of May. So today on Capitol Hill Reid responded to Angle’s argument, an argument also shared by some other critics such as Rand Paul, the Republican candidate for the Senate seat in Kentucky. “They don’t know what they’re talking about,” Reid said. “Nobody’s getting rich on unemployment insurance, but every day we deny it to those who are out of work, we weaken our nation,” he said. That was a view echoed by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. “The clock is ticking,” Solis said. “Those Americans who have lost the jobs through no fault of their own are counting on the Senate to stand up.” Whether or not the Senate will stand up remains to be seen, but Reid said today that two Republicans had told him they would support the extension. A vote is expected on Thursday. The Reid-Angle feud, meanwhile, will not be settled until the November elections. -Matthew Jaffe

Just call me a “mather” but I have done the math finding that the Obama/Pelosi/Reid triad have plunged us into a debt from which there appears to be no recovery.
The math reveals that at current interest rates it would take 50 or more years to amortize the current national debt. That would require a balanced budget (say zero deficit) and payments of a half-trillion dollars every year faithfully for 50+ years. But the triad just keeps spending, wasn’t the stimulus supposed to save the economy? Did it? Can it?
So, if unemployment benefits are continued at least 43 cents of every dollar spent must be borrowed.
How about more “mathers” spreading the word on what Obama/Pelosi/Reid are doing to us, doing to America! Pass the math to ten others.

The Republicans are killing us …Hopefully they see how shakey Wallstreet is because of consumer confidence is down again..Put that $$$ back into the ecomomy extend the benefits ..It all goes back anyway,,Oh Wait ! Iam according to Orin Hatch,,,gonna go get doped up and drunk! all the while watching my phone get turned off , Insurance get cancelled, my loan default. and vehicle repossesed..Already lost my home..Come to think of it maybe he’s right, it might kill the pain that’s inside. Keep praying folks !! I am trying hard to keep the pressure on please do the same..They are hearing it ,but not listening ,yet…Tell their staffers your hardships, Make them cry as you have. Make them feel their conscience. Touch their hearts and souls put your child on the line and let them hear their voices “please help mommy and daddy.”..This is the cold hard truth that needs to be on the airwaves.
( Our Legislatures),say they are for relief for the unemployed ,but it is not the top priority today ..You know, supreme court confirmations and general’s and all that is very URGENT! All The while families are at high anxiety levels. Bankers and creditors charging overdrafts and late fees now. I would love to see them add to the Bill when they ever get to it, that if extentions are provided, then any overdraft charges or late charges due to their failure to respond in a timely manner be waived for those who depended on those benefits. The US legislatures have caused this element by their negligence to their constituants thus furhering hardships not deserving. I pray for each and every law maker in this country to step aside of their political positions and do what is moarally right and not waste one precious second in helping their own countrymen. Are you listening?

I understand there are people out there who don’t want to work. However I have applied for jobs on a daily basis by searching on the internet, faxing my resume to different places and haven’t no one have call me back. Those who are saying Obama and the democrrats have drive this country down please think back when this economy crash as far as i can think back Bush was the one whom drive us under the ground Obama have pull us up above.I have work with my job for almost 6yrs now I am unemployed but I hate sitting home so I am currently enroll in school in the meantime I am looking for a job.I have two kids and their dad doesnt live in this country so I am pretty much a single mom and need a job that is goingto pay me enough to cover child care for my kids and still be able to pay the neccessary bills so pardon me if I cant work for minimum wage. While you sit on your high horses and get private planes and bonus that led us in this economic disaster.PAST THE BILL OR PROVIDE JOBS

Ok Angle to counter your argument,,,Take a worker who made $45,000 two years ago after working for a company that because of the finacial collapse is no longer in business, and his or her’s 12 years MOVING UP THE RANKS,,,That worker recieves roughly $18,000 with their U/I with no job offers after submitting 10 applications a week. Senator Angle is so out of touch with what is happening to 14,000 and more of his constituants.
Then let’s do this Seanator..Lets raise the minimum wage to $11.00 an hour across the board, an incentive to get these so called deadbeats into jobs that do not even exist..Come November I hope you loose your law degree, house, car, and your family disentigrates..How dare you take one penny from the public..

How many billions were given to GM to bail them out ?? Then they took off with the money and sold the company
There were people buying worthless GM stock until they stopped their ticker .
But The American worker is expendable .Why dont we pick fruit ??
Because they wont hire us , You have to be an illegal , or you wont get hired ..
I was on the floor at a book store dot com and unless you were Hispanic and spoke spanish ,no way you were getting a job .. Im not lieing
Go for it .. They will not hire english speaking Americans ,white or black young or old .. So conservatives with your get a job mentality .. Check it out try to get a blue collar job
Now try being over 45 ,American and a woman ,or try being a grey haired man
and starting a carreer at the bottom wrung again and learning and earning from teh bottom up again .. Its a death sentence ,but then again when you lose everthing you worked for it isnt really living anyway .The real problem is there are very few jobs for Americans due to prejudice against Americans in America . Senators ,members of congress , try walking in the shoes of the people you lead .. You are shutting the door on 10%
of this country .I have always been a conservative , But now Im watching Hardball with C mathews .No more fox

We the American people demand that neither house of Congress nor the president leave town until relief for the unemployed is passed!!!! by the end of this week, nearly 1.6 million will have lost their UI…and that the loss of this spendable income will further cripple an a…lready paralyzed economy…and destroy many li…ves. Many of the desperate unemployed peoples blogs are on facebook many many unemployment and unemployment extensions pages and New York Department of labors page. You must all remember that come Nov we all can vote !!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all we the people collecting unemployment were once working. We could not collect these benefits without paying into them in order to collect. And for the statement that we are lazy and don’t want to go back to work is wrong. We are the workers sweating and using our strength to get to and from work everyone. The senate and congress have a pretty plush job that they should not have any complaints. Try sitting in the hot sun waiting for a bus to get to work everyday like I did. And have to take another bus and another to finally get to your destination. By that time I would be tired and would have to give my job full attention. Then after the business start my journey all over again. I haven’t had vacation in over 25yrs. I have work since I was 16yrs. I see alot of energic people in this country. The ones that are lazy maybe are the ones who come to this country expecting an easy time and a hand out. This country was built with sweat and blood, tears.

The folks who are and should collect Unemployment benefits are NOT the ones who are lazy. They are laid off not welfare people get it straight!

2 + yrs unemployed Army Vet, still vigorously seeking work even tho I’m penniless. Even w/ the multiskills and fitness I have this has been nothing short of “rock-bottom”. I’ve sent my letters to (McConnell,O. Hatch, Snowe, NYS Senators, and finally, Obama) Republicans “no” strategy will backfire. I will forget about voting for the “no conspirators” as they have forgotten about us!

You know I have waited for 5 weeks now reading everything I can about this whole mess. It is a shame I don’t care who’s fault it is were in this shape in this country it’s been a long time coming. I have been laid off for 6 months now my last UI check was for $58.00 they said after 13 years with same company my benifits ran out I was done. I have worked in the same feild for 30 years since I was 15 years old, I am now 47. I have been through a lot of hard things in my life but I raised my daughters and believe in working hard and to be honest and fair. You know my oldest 20 year old girl is in the US Army been deployed once getting ready to go again, My wife had breast cancer one year after our wedding had both breasts removed, My 13 year old daughter lives with her mother which drinks booze all day long and won’t do anything with her. I still say you keep your head up work hard be honest. Our country needs to take care of there own first how far are they going to take us down the tubes. You know I watch them debate this on tv one guy had his two kids on there with him just to have a fun day with dad, You know I miss my daughter thats at war right now. But anyway so after 30 years of paying in I get 6 months of UI 360.00 and my whole life depends on it until I can get another job.

AMAZING! After a year of submitting over 700-resumes, I finally got an interview (yes one). I went to this interview with acute bronchitis, double inner ear infection and a fever. Did I even consider trying to reschedule this interview – NO! The interview went well and I was invited back for the second interview scheduled for the very next day (which was today & my illness is the same). 2-college degrees, 20-years management experience and I was told the job pays up to $12 an hour (which means $9 or $10). Did I even flinch? NO! I poured on the charm & wit. I felt that interview went well too, until I walked out the door and saw approx. 30 other people waiting with applications & resumes in hand and all were much younger.
So, dear senators: what do you think my chances of getting this job are? I have my fingers crossed & I will pray to God tonight asking to be the fortunate one to get this job. I need this job! I need any job before they repo my car & kick me and my kids out of our home. Because of your stupid politics, I haven’t had my unemployment benefits for 3-weeks now. Wanna know what I’ve been feeding my children? No you don’t wanna know. Quit worrying about your political standing and HELP!!! THe jobs aren’t out here. OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!

Ditto, Andy!! My husband worked for the same company for over 31 years and was laid off in January 2009 through no fault of his own. My husband is 55. How long does Angle expect my husband to work before he can climb the corporate ladder and make what he made when he was laid off? 86???? What do we do now with mortgage payments, college tuition, food, clothing, etc…Claim bankruptcy? Foreclose on the house?
Oh…collect food stamps and welfare. What a way to stimulate the economy, idiot! Where in the he** did you get your diploma? I haven’t seen Cracker-Jack boxes in a long time, so maybe it was conterfieted. I guess everything my husband has worked for goes “out the window”??? We need jobs that pay more than the minimum wage…especially at this stage in his life. What about eveyone else, like the 99er’s? What can they do now? My husband continues to look for work EVERY DAY…..they take one look at him and snicker behind his back….let’s get real…who will hire my husband at his age?

Ried is clearly on the “ropes”. Of course he would champion a populous position; in this case, unemployment benefits. It’s a well proven political strategy. In my opinion, the country would be better off without the kind of politician that Harry Ried represents. If he wasn’t up for reelection, my guess is he would be more austere.

Angle needs to loose everything before she opens her big mouth. She not only wants people and children living on the streets, she wants our old people there as well. Angle has no idea how many people are suffering on unemployment, let alone, now not having an income at all. I have worked for the last 30+ years, I have paid into the unemployed benefit and never have had to look at the benefit for 30 years until now. I lost my job when my company was sold and moved out of state. I worked for the company for 15 years and received nothing upon my forced departure. I search every week at least 20 to 30 job applications I submit to different companies. Because I have employment that stems back to the 1980′s, I do not even get a call back from employers. I have to say that I have seen on company websites “If you are on unemployment, you need not apply”. Explain that Mrs Angle. Why don’t you put you time to go after companies that post that garbage on their website. Then maybe the tax payers money will be paying you for something. Before people start talking about the national debt, maybe they should loose everything and see how it feels.

Ijust hope that all you unemployed people who read this “conservative crap” from out of touch morons like Sharon Angle “flood”the Nevada media with your “real story struggles” of trying to find employment.People like “Angle” are only preaching to the “haves” of society who live in their “insular little worlds” and who don’t understand the first thing about the deficit or how it could be reduced IF more people were working and/or had money to spend.

“She not only wants people and children living on the streets, she wants our old people there as well.” Amother victim of the Reid “true part of fear” propaganda machine. His ads show a little old couple eating soup at a kitchen table, while an announcer soloemnly intones that out elderly citizens depend on Social Security that Sharon Angle wants to eliminte. Angle is NOT trying to terminate Social Security immediately and leave those on it in the lurch. She advocates phasing it out, with new entrants receiving fewer benefits (which in reality is not much different from many contibutors pulling out less than they put in). Eventually no one else would be receiving benefits and the whole money pit could finally can be scrapped, as it should be. Sixty years ago Social Security was the only alternative to personal savings and company pensiions. Now that there are plenty of retirement alternatives (such as 401k’s, Keough’s, Roth and traditional IRAs, insured annuities, and mutual funds) Social Security has outlived its time.

I lost my job 2 years ago due to my employer downsized is company. I would prefer to work. With the gas prices jumping all around and the food prices are going up each week, I am stuck with asking family members for loans to help feed my children and put gas in my car to find a job. If you look in our state paper, the employment section is half a page now and it has been like that for quit some time now. I have apply at lower paying jobs just to try to get my lights on and air condition running. They do not even call me back. I was making over $21.00 per hour at my last job and I have been applying for any job that I can do, including jobs paying $7 an hour. What is going on is employer are downsizing, then hour ppl for lower wages instead of asking the employees to take a pay cut. In which I would have gladly accepted. At least I would have had some income coming in my house. My UI ran out three weeks ago. We have already heard about the man in Louisiana who killed himself because of the oil spill and he could not provide for his family. How many people have to die, starve to death, be homeless, with no homeless shelter to go to because of lack of funding? Some days I do not even eat because I make sure my kids eat something first and if there is anything left which is rare, then I eat. I can not buy my blood pressure medication because I do not have insurance anymore. My doctor tries to give me samples of my medication when they have some available in their office and there is only 5 pills in that sample bottle. I have a friend who has custody of his five children and been out of work for more than a year and next week they will be out on the street with no place to go. Our state has a waiting list for housing that is 2 years backlog. So all you ppl who do not know how it feels to be in the unemployment line ever week begging for a job need not put ppl down who are looking for a job.

well people all this rescission is doing is putting more money in the hands of the employer. jobs that use to pay 20 dollars a hour are now paying 12 because they know people are desperate. its got to come down to saying no more and doing something about it. things are not going to change..

Yes, our great Senate has helped the banks and GM without hesitation. And let us truly recognize the fact that the “doc fix” bill took priority over the suffering unemployed. I’m sorry, but I do not know of any doctors that are starving and having their homes foreclosed on. Come on Angle! The unemployed deserve RESPECT! It is not our fault that the American economy is shot and we lost our jobs without fault. Our economy’s state is a direct result of decisions you and those before you have made. So, don’t pass-the-buck! Take resposibility and help those of us who are suffering due to your inaction!

People, I’ve worked very hard all my life; but I lost my house last year after I was laid-off for a long time. I was expecting to jump right back to work, when I received the bad news, but I couldn’t fight the economy. I ended up losing my American Dream because Unemployment Pays only 1/3 to 1/4 of what I made before the recession. Right now, my family is barely surviving this (man made) disaster. We cut back on EVERYTHING from not buying eggs to getting the worst quality detergents.
These extensions are meant to keep my family from ending up on the street. PLEASE DON’T Take Any More From US! All we want is to survive another few months to get back on our feet. Sharron Angle has ZERO clue of the realities of an Average American. Her Senator Lifestyle has made her think She’s Queen Of the World. Why would I want to be on Unemployment when working has SOOO much more perks!

Let’s first explain to the morons in our Government that we the people run this country, not them. They work for us and it is very obvious that they are so far out of touch with reality that they will never understand. I am a 53 year old who has NEVER needed assistance from our Government until now. I have paid my taxes, voted in every election, never once missed a payment for anything that I ever bought on time and today am faced with my unemployment running out. Where is MY Government now??? Battling in Washington over party lines. Perhaps they have forgotten what their jobs are?
As far as the comment that I do not want to go to work???? That is ludicrous. BUT, I do not want a minimum wage job either, and that is what our Government has created in this country now. You see, if we were to take a minimum labor job and go off unemployment, I would still lose my home.
I was an executive with a company and although I made a very nice living, I did not live outside of my means. I am NOT GOING TO TAKE ANY job. I have paid into this unemployment for 37 years and deserve to be helped until I can find a reasonable job. Flipping burgers at McDonalds will not work for me.

I agree with all of the above comments. In the 1990 recession unemployment was extended until the Unemployment rate was down to 5%. But the Republicans will do anything to the American public to help them get votes in November. I’ve been working continuously since 1974. Now, after loosing most of my retirement saving due to an unregulated Wall Street, I need to begin all over again at $10/hour. Thanks. I;m an independant voter but what is happening in DC is so destructive to this country. As for the deficit,,,maybe if we had jobs again and were paying taxes, the deficit would come down..it is 3rd grade math,,,

Sharron Angel said The job doesn’t pay as much as the unemployment? What? Unemployment does Not pay as much as the job. you only get a portion of unemployment for the same time period than what you got when you used to worked.
Sharron Angel at the same time also criticized contractors who work temporary contract jobs. Yet Temporary contract work is good pay, and when a job is over, you get another. Contractors don’t go on unemployment. Plus if your good at what you do, they call to offer you another temporary job.
So Sharron Angel is wrong to say that temporary contract workers are just lazy and want to collect unemployment.

Angle supposedly represents the new Tea Party. We all knew that the Tea Party was largely white and had sufficient income. Why should they care about the unemployed? Well, in November, I doubt that the economy will be much better. There seems to have been a shift in the global economy towards China, Brazil and India. America and Europe are either not growing economically or growing very slowly. The GOP and the Tea Party want to shut the spigot off and force people into a corner or onto the street. Stop the stimulus and healthcare reform. Stop financial reform. But keep drilling. Give businesses tax cuts so maybe they hire a couple of the unemployed. Make the US more corporation friendly. Cut the taxes on the rich so they will invest in the economy. Trickle down economics. Reagan would be smiling. Unfortunately Americans aren’t.

I am sitting at my desk scratching my head and wondering when they turn off my internet services for none payment how will I continue to sent out resumes. I live in Detroit Mi, were there are simply no Jobs. I was employed with a company for 7 years and they laid me off because of a budget crisis. I have one more check from UI and thats it. I made 47,000 dollars a year. I will take a job for 15,000 a year which is less than UI I just wanna work if makes the heart soul and mind feel so much better then to depend on a hand out (well not a hand out) because I paid into to the unemployment system since I was 21 I am 49.

It appears the issue of extension of jobless benefit , currently blocked in the Senate, is not only the conflict between Reid and Angle in Nevada election, but also a conflict between Obama’s spend-borrow-spend approaches and the rest of conservative minded people in America and EU, who are in deep fear of sky high deficit and debt.
