Secretary Clinton on Death of American on Flotilla: ‘Protecting the Welfare of American Citizens is a Fundamental Responsibility of Our Government’
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirmed Thursday that a U.S.-Turkish dual national, 19-year-old Furkan Dogan, was among the nine activists killed in the Israeli Defense Force raid on the flotilla in the Mediterranean Ocean Monday.
Dogan was born in Troy, NY, and moved to Turkey when he was a toddler.
“Protecting the welfare of American citizens is a fundamental responsibility of our government and one that we take very seriously,” Clinton said. “We are in constant contact with the Israeli Government, attempting to obtain more information about our citizens.”
Clinton said that two other Americans had been injured, one on the flotilla and a third during a subsequent protest who remains hospitalized.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs Thursday said that “upon being told” that a U.S. citizen was among the dead, President Obama “expressed his deep condolences, and we certainly express our deep condolences to his family. Obviously, this is extremely horrible news for them.”
Administration officials were cautious in their language given the volatility of the situation and the ongoing investigation into what happened, but officials said privately that the death of a U.S. citizen changed the dynamic and raised the stakes for the U.S.
Some in the U.S. intelligence community cautioned that the flotilla was designed to provoke the Israeli military, and to break a blockade enforced by both Israel and Egypt to prevent arms from getting to Hamas in Gaza, a group designated as “terrorist” by the U.S. State Department.
Gibbs said that the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Jim Jeffrey, had been in contact with Dogan’s father, Ahmet.
“We’ve offered not only our heartfelt condolences but any kind of consular assistance that the family might need at this time,” Clinton said.
Gibbs reiterated that the U.S. had, along with the United Nations Security Council condemned the acts that led to these deaths, though the carefully and vaguely worded statement left it open to interpretation as to whether the IDF soldiers or the flotilla activists or both or neither were the ones whose “acts” were being condemned.
Clinton said that the U.S. government was “still gathering information about what happened” and had “made no decisions at this point on any additional specific actions that our government should take with respect to our own citizens.”
The Secretary of State reiterate the Obama administration’s called for the Israeli Government to “conduct a prompt, impartial, credible, and transparent investigation that conforms to international standards and gets to all the facts surrounding this tragic event,” an investigation that could include “appropriate international participation.”

Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
Please…you don’t take care of the Americans on the Mexican/three state border..so that’s B.S.! There should never have been anyone hurt if the terrorists hadn’t used weapons to kill the Israelis. Talk about having your support backwards!!!
Posted by: Sue | June 3, 2010, 6:07 pm 6:07 pm
He’s lived in Turkey his whole life, since he was 2…an American but probably not in thought. Was it tragic, absolutely, but when you do everything possible to break a blockade and you go in fighting and end up dead…ummm your fault regardless of what country you are from. Hillary needs to go back to being the silent Sec.

The fact that the U.S. is not firmly backing Israel is very very sad. Israel tries to keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists and the U.S. can’t figure out which side to stand on. Our allies or the people trying to supply terrorists? (according to the U.S. Hamas is a Terrorist Group, Hamas controls Gaza) HMMMM what when wrong. Oh yeah, November 2008.

The ship was sailing in international waters bearing white flags. Whatever you believe, attacking it under these circumstances is a blatant breach of international law. Additionally, the American citizen who was killed was shot 5 times at close range – 4 times in the head. Excessive use of force, you decide.

No one can kill US citizen, even if he is Muslim, without actions from US government to try to bring the killers to justice! It is sad that some US citizens value more the relationship with Israel than the life of US citizens!
US and US citizens interests first, then Israel, Georgia, S Korea .. whoever!
Posted by: DAK | June 3, 2010, 6:55 pm 6:55 pm
US has to ask Israel to give the name of the killers and to bring them to justice! No one can kill US citizens! Even Israeli forces!

I refer you to the Q’s to O’s WH. Why does it matter if he is a US citizen? US citizens are free to make decisions and to live by the consequences. If you participate in a flotilla, with the purpose of breaking a military blockade, then you choose to enter a dangerous situation and live by the consequences. The only responsiblity of the US gov’t is to help investigate the incident, impartially, and to let the chips fall after all the facts are discovered.
And IMHO, if this was a “peaceful humanitarian” flotilla with no other purpose, then I have a shiny golden unicorn that can make energy from its waste that I’d be happy to sell you.

SelmaAla, thank you for the information! Too bad for US!

And by no means was the ship “attacked” in military terms. The ship was boarded from above by IDF special forces. At that point, all hell broke loose. The investigation should bring forward all facts from that point.
It’s not good for the flotilla that night vision goggles and body armor were later found on board. How many “starving” Gazans would those feed?

I am happy to hear they are so concerned about US citizens. Will that translate into better protections regarding people like the Times Square bomber, Christmas Day bomber, our open southern border and all around “sensitivity” when it comes to addressing security issues regarding those extremists who think their position on an issue gives them the right to kill others. I am very sorry for the American killed. Also in seeing a couple of interviews of people on board I am beginning to wonder if organizers used a lot of them as pawns. Given these interviews it seems a lot were not even told by their leaders that both Israel and Egypt had radioed the ships to dock in their country and after inspection they could send along their non banned stuff to Gaza.

Number of Israelis killed = 0.
Number of ‘others’ killed = 9.
Another ruthless attack on Israelis.

Israel may just be trying to start a war. She certainly isn’t trying to make friends! It’s time for the United States to cut the unbillibal cord between us and let them make it on their own

Israel is a war state, it has been implemented by the West in the middle of the arab world to keep this part of the world in continuous problems so that the arab countries never think about development(regardless from their huge revenues from oil) but just focus on the threats coming from their unwanted neighbor.. I’m wondering when the West will wake up and see who are the real terrorists that attack civilians that are trying to help other civilians who are under a blockade that is against all the international laws. I m wondering how would the reaction of the west be if it was the israeli civilians that were under a military attack.. we gotta be more objective

They ran over Rachel Corrie in a bulldozer and didn’t even stop to let her be properly buried… They killed american soldiers in the USS Liberty in ’67 and nobody was ever held accountable. This is no accident… This is the status quo…
Occupation is an act of WAR! Murdering those who give aid to dying citizens is an act so despicable NO WORDS can adequately describe it.
Shame on anyone who would dare to defend such atrocites!

“Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Israel to conduct a “prompt, impartial and transparent” investigation that complies with international standards and get the facts out as soon as possible”. Israel, which has routinely lied about many matters this year (assasination in Dubai, their piracy off the coast of Gaza, their nuclear weapons, etc), is certainly incapable of investigating their own murderous actions. For Clinton to make the above statement probably renders her the most incompent politician in the Western world (and mind you, I live in Arizona!). The US has enabled Israels Apartheid policies since Eisenhower left office (review history for how he handled Israel and the Middle East for a lesson in how to do things). Obama has followed George W. Bush in all foreign policy issues.

Well another ship named after Rachel is headed to Gaza even in the wake of what has just happened. Again both Israel & Egypt have said to go to ports in either country for inspections and then the aid will get through. Once again the ship insists on trying to break the blockade. I don’t know if any americans are on board but this is ridiculous.

Hillary, Biden, and Obama also know that this
American citizen took four bullets at close
range to the head and one in the chest. The victims
of the massacre have stated that the Israelis began firing live ammo before they attempted to rappel down. One of the killed was shot dead spot on the top of his head – because he was red-lasered from above from the encircling Israeli helicopters. It took place in international waters indisputably.
The world will decide who to believe, the concocted stories of the Israelis, who confiscated all the passengers video and film and jammed the satellite feeds, or the lying eyes of the massacre victims. They had the audacity to fight back! Oh yes….
And American politicians will continue to disgrace and soil themselves by parroting the Israeli/AIPAC line. Everybody in the world can see this travesty now,
even our real oldest ally, the British. What an appalling end to the old Republic.

American’s are dying, but even our goverment will not do anything. Hilary and most in washington are on the Israeli’s lobbies payroll. These corrupt politicians are more about protecting their jobs than American lives.

Very interesting indeed. US will let Israel investigate the murder of one of its citizens done by Israeli soldiers.
Actually this is a good idea, if allowed on all the suspects, and they do their own investigation we’d have much less convicts, and lower level of prison problems.

I would find it very helpful for Ms Clinton to issue an clear statement of US Policy on the blockade. It was my impression that our policy was to support it… if that policy has changed, then she should make that clear…
She should also discuss the incident in view of her clear statement of US policy…
Finally she should discuss any further attempts to breech the blockade in terms of US Policy…
Just as an aside, there are American citizens living in Israel under threat of rocket attack and suicide bomber attack from Gaza… I hope their lives are as important to protect as the life of a citizen acting in opposition to US Policy.

History, somewhat repeats itself
In Europe former Jewish partisans led by Abba Kovner began to organize escape routes taking Jews from Eastern Europe down to the Mediterranean where the Jewish Agency organized ships to illegally carry them to Palestine. British officials in the occupied German zones tried to halt Jewish immigration by refusing to recognize the Jews as a national group and demanding that they return to their places of origin.
In order to prevent Jewish illegal migrants reaching Palestine a naval blockade was established to stop boats carrying illegal migrants and there was extensive intelligence gathering and diplomatic pressure on countries through which the migrants were passing or from whose ports the ships were coming.

Okay, lets get one thing out of the way: The World War Two Jewish Holocaust is one hundred percent a lie. The Jewish Holohoax never, ever happened. The Zionist Jews of Europe used this Holohoax lie to rob Germany, USA and Russia, and establish Israel on land stolen from Palestinians, Egyptians, Syrians, and Lebanese people. That is why if anyone in Europe asks for any real scientific evidence for their Holohoax lies, they immediately arrest him and put him in jail. Because they have zero evidence to show for it. They never had any evidence, because it has always been a lie.
Next question.

Now, attacking a ship in international waters, Killing the people on-board the ship, taking the people to your torture centers against their will, and stealing the cargo of the ship is called kidnapping, Murder, and piracy.
Yes, even if the criminals are from the “Chosen Race” and call themselves the “Jewish Master-race”, it is still considered: Kidnapping, Murder, and piracy.
By the way, we all know that the Israeli Jews lie as a rule. So whatever video they show is a lie and was filmed on a film-stage to be shown as the “real” video, even-though they are all Jewish actors in the film. EVERYTHING the Israelis say or show is a lie by default. And it is all paid for by the US and European tax dollars.

Being an American citizen doesn’t preclude support for known terrorist organizations. The names Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, Syed Haris Ahmed, Timothy McVeigh and John Walker Lindh are just a few that come to mind. Take off the blinders my U.S brothers.

@Sue,
Offensive operations against a military force under the guise of of the white flag of surrender should be shown no quarter. And they were offensive, look at the videos the “peacekeepers” taped of themselves making preparations to fight. Your moral indignation is just a fig leaf for your summary condemnation of Jews and the State of Israel. You fool no one.

“Protecting the welfare of American citizens is a fundamental responsibility of our government and one that we take very seriously,”
—
Correction, Ms Clinton:
Protecting the welfare of American citizens is THE fundamental responsibility of our government. That means those citizens in and of this country. Expatriates be damned.
The only thing you guys seem to be “taking seriously” is putting the citizens IN this country ON welfare.

Does anyone remember the Cuban Missile Crisis when the US had it’s own blockade turning back ships from a NATO ally?? Even one of our own soldiers (Maj. Anderson) was shot down. No nuclear weapons had even been fired into the US (as opposed to the internationally verified thousands of rockets launched daily from Gaza at civilians in Israel). We intercepted, boarded, turned back and even fired a warning shot at ships in international waters to prevent the blockade from being broken. IN fact we were trying to help Turkey’s defense at that time. One false move could have meant worldwide nuclear war. No one disputed that nukes were being put into Cuba just like now no one disputes that rockets are being smuggled into Gaza. In fact 2 ships shown to be full of weapons have already been discovered which is why the Israelis and Egyptians have had international support (including from the US) for their blockade. Yes people were killed and that was tragic, more details need to come out but they were IGNORING a blockade and requests to be diverted from both Israel & Egypt that is an act of aggression and now another ship is headed there. This second ship is intent also on ignoring requests from Egypt and Israel. How can the US be responsible for people going out of their way to put themselves foolishly into harms way. One last note according to the red cross & red crescent their have been no halting of humanitarian needs into Gaza ie no humanitarian crisis. Those things have been regularly sent in to non HAMAS approved distribution places and guess what DISTRIBUTED.

Takes a lot of nerve to use an American life to turn this around on Israel….This individual know full well what they were in for when they try to break that blockade…If you come at me with a knife or metal bar…Duh yeah I am going to defend myself with any means at my disposal and let the court of opinion sort it out later…

“We have no compunction about branding North Korea a rogue state for attacking a South Korean naval vessel in international waters. But Israel’s unprovoked attack on civilian ships in international waters — well, that’s a different sort of thing.
Indeed, some of the coverage has suggested that wily peace activists lured Israeli commandos into boarding their vessels in the middle of the night just so they could attack the armed soldiers with sticks.
But my sense is that while politicians and media remain fearful of criticizing Israel the public is starting to move on.” – Toronto Star, Canada

The level of animosity shown to that tiny democratic country of Israel never ceases to amaze me. Brings out the kooks and conspiracy nuts like none other.
The fact that this kid was born in the U.S. (and moved away to Turkey when he was 2) should not influence our government’s response in the least. I highly doubt he thought of himself as an American. For Mrs. Clinton to use his death as some sort of foil against Israel subverts the tight and mutually beneficial alliance our two countries have (and need).

Our “special relationship” with the fascist “democracy” of Israel is bleeding us dry… the lobbies bribe and bully us into Iraq. Now they brazenly kill an American on a charity ship!?! Time to end aide to our “ally”. I say one more incident like this and we start sending troops into Israel to take care of business. What if Iran had done this!?!

This “American” was born here while his father was on a temporary student visa pursueing a masters. He was only an American because of a citizenship loophole that hopefully one day will be closed. And what do you think this kid was screaming don’t shoot, I’m an American?
“I say one more incident like this and we start sending troops into Israel to take care of business.”
Like I said, Israel really brings out the delusional ones.

During its short 62 years history Israel had fought 8 wars against its Arab neighbors. It had developed nuclear weapons and did not sign the NPT. It had used chemical and nuclear (DU) weapons against civilians. It violated many UN resolutions. It committed war crimes and many massacres against civilians. It had refused all Arab peaceful gestures and keeps threatening to attack its neighbors. It occupation and destruction of religious sites, especially Islamic, might provoke religious war in the region. Israel is the biggest threat to peace in the Middle East.
NOW they are KILLING TURKISH CIVILIAN and TURKEY is FIRST COUNTY RECOGNIZE the state of ISRAEL and If US ever condemns ISRAEL violence act then next will be US citizens.
What a TERRORIST state has US and British created to the world.
