White House Acknowledges Job Talks with Democratic Senate Candidate Andrew Romanoff

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs acknowledged Thursday morning that White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina talked last September with Andrew Romanoff, the former speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, about possible administration jobs he might be qualified for if he didn’t challenge Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., in the Democratic primary.

Last night, Romanoff issued a statement stating that Messina had floated the possibility of three jobs – including two at the US Agency for International Development – if he didn’t run for Senate. Romanoff turned Messina down and is challenging Bennet, whom President Obama endorsed.

The Gibbs statement didn’t contradict the one offered last night by Romanoff, though Gibbs added that Romanoff had “applied for a position at USAID during the Presidential transition. He filed this application through the Transition on-line process.  After the new administration took office, he followed up by phone with White House personnel.”

Gibbs said that “Messina called and emailed Romanoff last September to see if he was still interested in a position at USAID, or if, as had been reported, he was running for the US Senate.  Months earlier, the President had endorsed Senator Michael Bennet for the Colorado seat, and Messina wanted to determine if it was possible to avoid a costly battle between two supporters.  But Romanoff said that he was committed to the Senate race and no longer interested in working for the Administration, and that ended the discussion. As Mr. Romanoff has stated, there was no offer of a job.”

The job discussions have received added attention after the controversy involving the White House enlisting former President Bill Clinton to try to convince Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Penn., to not challenge Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Penn., in the Pennsylvania primary. Sestak, too, decided to run and he ultimately beat Specter.

Bennet has led Romanoff in public polling; the Colorado Democratic primary is in August.

“Andrew Romanoff,…issued a statement Wednesday evening claiming that the White House raised the possibility that he might be offered an administration job if he opted to not challenge incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo.”

There was no job offer and the media does not want to accept that fact. Instead they are trying to create a scandal. I believe the same thing happened with sestak, sestak was never offered a job but sestak tried to blow it up into a job offer in order to make himself look better in the eyes of Pennsylvania voters. The main stream media needs to stop falling for the lies of the drudge reports and right wing crazy congressmen.

More like you folks are hyper-critical of what Obama is doing… no one raised any flags when Reagan or the Bush’s did it… but if a dem is going to do it, nail him to the wall… right?
Kinda like “Make it a crime to lie about your military service” that Orrin Hatch offered up last week to bust a certain Dem sen, chops… but when a repub did the same thing, never mind, withdrawing the legislation.
Folks, this is literally and legally the smartest Administration EVER! No way they are making rookie mistakes. Its all in how the “offer” is made, and you can bank that it was made LEGALLY, and all of this fuss is a smokescreen away from REAL issues.

DewyB, it’s not illegal and it’s no different from anything any other president has done. and it places obama squarely among the ranks of the rest of the dirtbags who have inhabited the white house. obama’s supporters (especially minorities) can at least take some solace in the knowledge that they have now ascended to a socio-political position in which they too can elect one of their own to the highest office who is just as big a loser as all the white losers who have been elected to the presidency. congratulations. and before you respond to me as if i’m some right-winger…can it. i hate them all…regardless of party, race, class or whatever. and obama’s just another one among the sleazy political class.

OBAMA QUOTE:
“The recession has certainly made it worse, but that feeling of not being in control of your own economic future — that sense that the American Dream might slowly be slipping away — that’s been around for some time now,”
Yes that sense of the American Dream slipping away has been around since about January 20, 2009. You Mr. Obama are the cause. You Mr. Obama are the reason. You Mr. Obama are incompetent, you are a liar, and you cannot talk intelligently without a teleprompter. Your only vision for this country is despair. You, sir, are a fraud and you know it.
Many people inside and outside this country seriously doubt that you are a Natural Born Citizen because of your obfuscation of the facts, which would be so easy to refute. Why do you not show your ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE? Curse those who help you cover up your lies – one by one, may they receive their just reward. As for you, your time is coming to an end. IMPEACHMENT is the only answer to the salvo of dishonestly, and unconstitutional attacks that you have perpetrated against the citizens of this country. You are not worthy of the office that has been bestowed upon you. May you rot in the place from which you came.

“In Colorado, state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff announced he’d take on appointed Sen. Michael Bennet in a Democratic primary. Romanoff had, however, previously applied for a job with the Obama administration. The White House reached out to him, and asked if he was still interested in the position. Romanoff said he was sticking with the Senate race, and the White House backed off. There was no job offer, and no guarantee that one would be traded for the other.”
“If what the Obama administration did was impeachable, then Rep. Issa might want to consider retroactive impeachment action against Ronald Reagan, whose White House directly suggested to S.I. Hayakawa that he would get an administration position if he would stay out of the Republican primary for Senate in California; or call for an investigation and special prosecutor of the Bush White House for discussing a Cabinet post with Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska to clear the field for their preferred Republican candidate Mike Johanns in 2006. At the same time, Issa might want to call for expulsion of his Senate colleague Judd Gregg, who insisted before he accepted the post of Commerce Secretary in the Obama administration that there be a guarantee that his successor, appointed by a Democratic governor, be a Republican.”

How can this administration be so stupid?TO PUT THIS ON AN E-MAIL? Aside from the legal issues(becoming more real every day) how could they be so cosmically dumb as to print a smoking gun? This should of been expected;when Obama got elected we were told how they “hit the ground running” with the swift and efficient cabinet selection process, even though the cabinet wasn’t filled until months after the inauguration.I suspect that there are more of these offers out there;Without Pelosi and Reid carrying his water Obama is nothing,

A pity that these calls were all legal and not being monitored or recorded. We actually do have some secret recording of how the Obama team deals with these sorts of things from the Blagojevich case, before this became the Republican witchhunt of the month:
Blagojevich said he knew Obama wanted Senate Candidate 1 for the open seat but “they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. [Expletive] them.”
Republicans have nothing but slanderous innuendo in their desperate quest to get Ken Starr back to work wasting America’s time on a muck raking crusade. Whenever there are actual hard facts, they support that Obama’s group played the game legally.

Ever since Andrew Jackson, our 7th President, brought the “Spoils System” into Washington this tactic has been a key part of elections. Many “volunteers” work for candidates because they’ve been offered lucrative jobs if their candidate wins.
Offering someone else a job if they do NOT run for office is different, but it’s in the same spirit and, unfortunately, that will continues. Many of our country’s Vice Presidents were so-chosen to keep them our of Congress during the President’s Administration – especially Lyndon Johnson. So I don’t see it ending soon.

Obama approval index remains at 46% with indications of a continual decline. 1% drop in the % of people who identify themselves as Democrats with a corresponding increase in the number who identify themselves as independent. It’s becoming more apparent that the emperor is wearing no clothes. Why? Even teflon will tarnish if enough stuff is left on the burner long enough. Now day 48 of the BP oil spill that Obama has taken responsibility for. More jobs for dropping campaigns now hitting the press. National debt raised to $13T one day before his congress spends another $200 billion more. Health care “reform” now being shown for much less than claimed. Even ABC and CBS are starting to fall off the bandwagon. This is a one-term president doing his best to take the “worst” rating from Carter.

I’m not exactly sure I see a problem with this. The guy APPLIED for a job and was offered one if he didn’t run. He can’t very well take the job then turn around and abandon it for a Senate bid. Well I guess he could but in any case I don’t see why people call this “bribery”. They offered, he said no, END OF STORY!

Posted by: tiredofpoliticaldrama | June 3, 2010, 10:12 am 10:12 am

One of the most disgusting things about this effort to try to bribe candidates to leave an electoral race is that it denies voters the chance to choose their candidates(instead of the voters choosing by voting in a primary people like Obama are making the choice for them by clearing the playing field—this is very antidemocratic). The “Everybody does it” defense doesn’t cut it either(especially from someone who raised our expectations deliberately by promising again and again that his administration was going to be the least corrupt in history). Noone should be doing this because it deprives the voters of choices.

Posted by: ConstantXI | June 3, 2010, 10:17 am 10:17 am

“The guy APPLIED for a job and was offered one if he didn’t run. ”
The problem is that he was not offered the job until he decided to run in the Senate primary. Perhaps you don’t realize that because it hasn’t been that clear from the spin doctor’s at the white house. The job wasn’t offered as a result of his application to it, it was only discussed (along with two others) after his entry into the Colorado Senate primary.

Some Obama voters write here “I see nothing wrong with this”. That’s what’s wrong with it.

With all the HUGE challenges facing our country and world… This is a ‘blue dress’ issue not worthy of attention. But certainly the Republicans will MAKE IT an issue. I guess it is better / more important to focus efforts on this issue than actually addressing the far more complex challenges facing us – eh folks?

“This is a ‘blue dress’ issue not worthy of attention. But certainly the Republicans will MAKE IT an issue.”
And this is a red herring attempting to obfuscate what appears to be a violation of federal law. If you apologists can with one breath state that Obama needs to have parties, ceremonies and etc. while there are larger issues that demand attention occuring, you cannot then say investigating possible crimes is an attempt to delay action on more pressing, complex issues. Eh Tom?

Posted by: J.R. | June 3, 2010, 11:46 am 11:46 am

Apparently, if your ideas and policies cannot stand up to any sort of scrutiny, you end up desperate for a super majority in Congress so that you can pass bills without letting anyone read them. You would think the White House could find other things to do besides meddle in primary elections, I don’t know, maybe work on fixing the oil spill, the economy, or Iraq and Afghanistan? Remember that when the country was facing economic meltdown, John McCain announced he was suspending his campaign to go back to Washington to work on a bipartisan solution. Obama just laughed at him and continued campaigning. And now as president, facing an oil spill, and dismal job numbers, Obama simply steps up the campaigning and fund-raising activities. If it’s not a campaign event, a vacation, or calling for some sort of commission, don’t expect Obama to do it. And he has the audacity to whine that he is facing the toughest presidency since the Depression. Gee, it must have been so much easier to be president during 9-11 and Katrina. The President needs to learn from the BP CEO that saying “poor little me” is not a good excuse for lack of leadership.

We get it. You’re fishing for a reason to get another Ken Starr in there to go fishing. We’re also getting an inkling of just why the Bush Whitehouse ‘accidentally’ lost 5 million emails. Obama just may burned as a witch due to his good openness practices, and we’ll never see another administration make that mistake again. Obama has already been beaten up over making visitor logs open – showing bank execs visits – and the unprecedented reporting of stimulus spending publicly online. It will be a long time before another administration opens up to this degree I wager.

Go ahead and pursue – I’m all for fully enforcing (most all) of our laws – but… Let’s not pick and choose our enforcement based on who it is.
The President has many functions and needs for attention during every day. No President gives 100% attention to any one challenge – and there are indeed other responsibilities to fulfill. A few “parties and ceremonies” will not effectively distract from critical duties.
But again – by all means – pursue this if you think it is so important.

The AZ law… That will do NOTHING to truly address the complexities of the immigration challenges we face. Greater border security / enforcement… That will help but that too won’t truly address the problem.
Capping this oil leak… That will fix the immediate, huge problem of such – but it will do nothing to address our huge energy needs and very limited supply situation (and the threat of the next leak).
The just recently passed healthcare reform… Same. Will fix a few things / make some things worse – but the overall huge cost HC is causing us all has not been addressed.
The soon-to be Financial fix… I can almost promise that too will fail to fix a financial casino on the edge.
Where is leadership? Neither Dems or Repubs – nor capitalists – are stepping-up!

The following is from one of Bush’s ethics lawyers: “Painter described the Obama administration’s conduct in this case — as when it offered an advisory position to Rep. Secondlook —- I challenge you to do a little research on the “hidden crimes” of this administration… The Blago-Sestak-Romanoff fiasco will probably not “doom” this administration… because they can “obfuscate” with the best…. but combine this with all the other crooked rats in the swamp… you just can’t deny that your hero at the top is as crooked as they come!! —- You can even forget that Obama got companies together to contribute enough money to save Chicago-based Shore Bank, the community lender with strong ties to the Obama administration (can you say corruption?)… But the pinnacle is CCX-Gate —– Google the connections of the Chicago Carbon Exchange with the Joyce FoundationObama, Gore, Goldman Sachs……. it doesn’t get any better than that!!!!

great catman – we’ll see you in Dec or whenever the Repubs get power back – and then let’s hear your comments when they continue to fail to address the huge issues facing us.
Freedom, liberty and capitalism will not fix the problems we face – and I have seen nothing from the Repubs to think they offer any real plans to address these challenges. Or are they just waiting for the right opportunity to reveal such?

Oprah became “unleashed,” when Obama was elected, and Will Smith crawled on the floor and cried. Tsk! Tsk! That is all that matters. What is scary is that I think Best Friend Gayle is really running the country. Let’s get back to basics.

Back room deals, bribery, fraud, quid pro quo. It’s really OK because they all do it.

Perhaps you’ve seen the amazing House Republican website asking people for ideas for an agenda (an election-year gimmick intended to help give the GOP a policy platform to run on since they don’t have any ideas or solutions.) Dana Milbank and others have highlighted some of the “great” suggestions the gimmick has generated:
“I say, repeal all the amendments to the Constitution.”
“Build a castle-style wall along the border, there is plenty of stone laying around about there.”
“A ‘teacher’ told my child in class that dolphins were mammals and not fish!” a third complains. “And the same thing about whales! We need TRADITIONAL VALUES in all areas of education. If it swims in the water, it is a FISH. Period! End of Story.”

Freedom, liberty and capitalism will not fix the problems we face -
So what do you advocate? Progressive ideals? Communism ? Socialism?
Yes, I think the next elections will provide a clear choice. You can support the american constitution or you can support the “Progressive” social justice….whatever that means……

Posted by: wb | June 3, 2010, 1:20 pm 1:20 pm

wb’s post reminded me of this—-
“In the right-wing mind, the world we live in at any given moment can be described as the free market, the American way of life, perhaps not a perfect world but a cherished and fundamentally free one. The next advance of liberalism will always bring socialism, tyranny, a crushing burden on industry, and other horrors. The previous liberal advances that they or their predecessors greeted with such hysteria are eventually incorporated into the landscape of the free American way of life.
Everything that the 1960s right said about Medicare, the contemporary right no longer believes, while fervently believing it will all hold true of health care reform. Similarly, the hysteria of the 1970s right about clean-air regulation no longer plagues the contemporary right, but it grips conservatives when it comes to greenhouse-gas regulation. (Charles Krauthammer: Cap-and-trade “will destroy what’s left of the industrial Midwest.”) And so it goes.” (The New Republic, December 2009)

Instead we get back room deals for Unions that endorse him at the expense of Fire and Police. Instead of Health Care Reform We get unconstitutional insurance fraud. Now we have at least 2 counts of Election Tampering. Oh and if you are Gay or a Lesbian you were betrayed in the first 60 days when Obama supported the Defense of Marriage Act. You Still can’t serve openly in our Military and god forbid you ask for Benefits for you legally wed spouse!.

Like Blogo, let the administration pay for their own lawyers and take them to court with a big media frenzy.
Here the government tries circumventing the election process by giving jobs as a bribe to step down from representing the electorate, which is far worse than a politian paying someone to get a government appointment. where is the outrage news media! Waiting for someone to hit you over the head?

Posted by: vetman | June 3, 2010, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm

For the longest time, Romanoff was unemployed and applied for every open political appointment he came across. He was denied every job. No one wanted the worthless hack. He was never considered for the position at USAID or the other 2 jobs the Obama Admin tried to bribe him with until he bacame a spoiler in the Colorado primary. Obama wanted him anywhere but the US Senate and tried to buy him out of the race.

can you imagine this administration and congress during 911?
catman | Jun 3, 2010 1:02:08 PM
Yes. I wonder just how our economy would be if we had not poured a trillion dollars into nation building in Iraq? Or sent Special Forces into Tora Bora to shoot Bin Laden in the head like a Somali pirate? Or focused on our domestic problems while simultaneously hunting and destroying Al Quaida via drones, bombs, cruise missiles and special forces be they in Pakistan or Yemen?
I hope everyone stops for a moment and tries to imagine just what America would look like if Obama had been president on 9/11.

No thanks. He can’t handle it without a 911. It would appear Obama talk Blago everything he knows about jobs! Obama continues to show his complete turnaround on transparency, politics as usual and Chicago style ethics on a daily basis. If he is/was the best the Dems can offer, time for a huge change.

Tom Said: “…and I have seen nothing from the Repubs to think they offer any real plans to address these challenges.”

LOL… WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE with you Tom! Republicans controlled the Senate, House and White House for 6 years (2001 to 2007)… and NOW they have a better plan(???) … where was that “better plan” when they had the perfect opportunity to implement it?

Posted by: X-Republican-Because-Of-Bush | June 3, 2010, 3:10 pm 3:10 pm

Another manufactured scandal goes out with a whimper -
“Romanoff applied for a job with the administration, and followed up with phone calls to administration officials about possible opportunities. He gave up about a year ago, and turned his attention to the Senate race. When the White House inquired with Romanoff about whether he was still interested about a possible position, he declined.
That’s the White House’s version of events; that’s Romanoff’s version of events. There. Is. No. Scandal. As far as political reporting goes, it has all the fascination of watching paint dry.”

secondlook — You said “the crazy off of Glenn Beck” —— hmmmmm, lets see, he believes in the Constitution, the founding fathers, Obama is “big government” and trying to take as much control as possible, Obama has multiple skeletons in the closet but the mainstream media won’t do their job…… hmmmm, I kind of agree…. which part do you have a problem with??

How many positions was he given to choose from? Reading with my eyes open, I counted 3. But, not to worry, The WH and Romanoff will have the opportunity to repeat that (baldfaced lie) over and over and over and over between now and November.
I’m sure he is a shoe-in.

I have a problem with all that fuzzy “math” where so and so once walked in front of so and so, then they went over and did this, and because of that it suggests this guy over here was in on that and by the time we get to the end of this string of nonosense it’s back to Obama is a secret Nazi planted by Russia. Anybody that believes that hack is a fool. And it’s so easy to tell the ones that do. Stop ruining my country please. Grown some brain connections and learn to think.

Posted by: Ed Taylor | June 3, 2010, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

Ok, let’s get rid of Fox News Network (FNN)and watch our national debt become a surplus. Let’s get rid of Glen Beck and cheer as the unemployment rate drops below 8 percent and less than 2 million Americans are unemployed. As Bill O’Reilly walks out the FNN door, we will all applaud as our 94,000 American troops depart Afghanistan and our 92,000 American troops depart Iraq. Then, as Sean Hannity is silenced, we will all celebrate as all the oil that is polluting the Gulf of Mexico is suddenly evaporated. Yep, once Fox News goes away, all of the Obama Administration problems will go away. Then, we can get accurate reporting from MSNBC, CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. We’ll all be happy and dancing in the street, shouting: “Fox News is gone!!!”

Posted by: SelmaAla | June 3, 2010, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm

Meanwhile the debt soars past $13 trillion! If we held it at $13, balanced the budget and began to pay it down it would take 50 years w/payments of a half trillion dollars per year.
Do the math, the Obama/Pelosi/Reid triad are still spending even in the face of PayGo. So will the debt be paid in 100 years, 150 years or how about never?
Would anyone in his/her right mind vote to continue this meltdown? Obamacare is part of it as it left out “Doc-Fix”. No Rationing? Don’t hold your breath!

Posted by: Ed Taylor | June 3, 2010, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm

And who cares if he was offered a job. We would all give jobs to our friends if we could. Let’s move on to some real scandals. Like Obamacare!!

Posted by: Doug | June 3, 2010, 4:47 pm 4:47 pm

GeorgeBushie, Don’t worry, history is already being rewritten. Obama and congressional Dems are adding $5 BILLION to the debt PER DAY. That’s 3 times the rate of Bush. By the time Obama is finished (2 1/2 years) Bush will look like a skin flint by comparison.

Posted by: Ken | June 3, 2010, 5:30 pm 5:30 pm

$5 BILLION PER DAY

Should qualify the man for jail time.

Posted by: smartlillena | June 3, 2010, 5:46 pm 5:46 pm

The fact is that YES this guy from Colorado had applied for jobs. BUT HE DIDN’T GET THEM! THEN once he was a threat to Bennett’s seat, Nobama’s people all of a sudden want to offer him a gig. All of this offering of jobs…isn’t that what Blago is accused of? Typical Chicago crookedness.

Posted by: theN01skinsfan | June 3, 2010, 7:32 pm 7:32 pm

BTW,
I wish Tapper would be a bit more even-handed and honest on “This Week” on Sunday mornings. Last week he talked about how the Repubs are 1-4 in special elections and then said they only won in Hawaii because Dems split the votes. But isn’t that what happened in NY 23? The non-dems got 52% of the vote. The Dem only got 48%

When government run Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Post Office and the new HCR bill all go bankrupt, maybe people will finally realize the left lied to them to get power just like the Glen Becks of the world told them.

Guy is now looking for new job [senate] because first choice [administration] didn’t pan out so he says no. NOW he says it was THEM – they offered him a job NOT to run.
