Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Protesters: If You Block the Jail, You’ll End Up In the Jail
Maricopa county Sheriff Joe Arpaio has a message to the people who intend to protest the controversial Arizona immigration law tomorrow: “I’m ready for it.”
“I hear a rumor they want to block my jails. So if they want to block the jails they can have a little trip in the jails,” Arpaio told me on “GMA.” “So we are not going to put up with any civil disobedience just because they want to show, give a message through the media about this situation that is occurring here in Arizona.”
Arpaio has tents set up as a make shift jail cells outside the Maricopa county jail, anticipating a surge of illegal immigrants. SB 1070 will go into effect at midnight tonight, unless a federal judge sides with the Obama administration and issues an injunction.
I asked the sheriff what steps he’s taking to make sure his officers don’t engage in racial profiling, and why all these new steps are necessary given the fact that illegal immigration and crime in the southwest have both been dropping for the last several years.
Arpaio told me he doesn’t understand what the “big hype” is about.
“Nothing really is going to change other than the fact that if we come across an illegal alien that doesn’t have a state charge now we can arrest them and book them into the jail or turn him over to ICE,” he said.
Opponents of the law, which allows police to question someone suspected of being an illegal immigrant, argue that the legislation will lead to racial profiling – but Arpaio insisted that’s not true.
“We’re not engaged in [racial profiling] now in all types of crimes we enforce. So what’s the difference whether you enforce another crime, which is the illegal immigration? So we are very comfortable,” he told me.

I agree with this law because the feds have failed to enforce their own laws.
Even so, I have to remember that this fat, arrogant fool has consistently trampled on the Constitution and ignores things like probable cause and due process. He has also consistently used his position to bring bogus charges against his detractors. This man needs to be in his own jail until he is sentenced to life in prison.

Due process should not apply to someone in this country illegally. They should be treated as a criminal for that is what they are. Illegal hispanics have made it impossibly difficult for legals hispanics. Perhaps the legal hispanics should bus down to Mexico and protest migration northward.

If you are not an illegal, you have nothing to worry about. When you get stopped by the cops, they always ask for your license, insurance and registration, if you have these and haven’t broke the law you will be on your way. Flip the coin over and you will be visiting Sheriff Arpaio from the inside. Way to go sheriff. Lock them up, and when time take them to the border because they can walk across the river back to mexico.

Seriously, protest ’til you’re blue in the face – that’s your right as an American citizen. However, only a fool interferes with police duties so if you block the jail, you’ll deserve whatever you get.

No doubt the federal governement is very late is tackling the issue of rampant illegal immeigration in this country. But the way the law is written (and I have read it), it gives local authorities waaaaaay too much opportunity to arrest legal immigrants as well as actual citizens who just happen to look non-American (a.k.a not of western European decent). It allows local authorities who SUSPECT you of being an illegal alien to be guilty until proven innocent. ANY law that allows that (including TX’s open container law) goes directly against the this country’s “innocent until proven guilty” principle and shouldn’t be on the books.

IF you get pulled over for speeding, and you are found not to be wearing a seat belt in a state where they are required, you are penalized for breaking this additional law. Why should it be any different for someone breaking the immigration law?

To paraphase the Sheriff; “I don’t see no difference between making an arrest for a felony and arresting an illegal immigrant. There is no racial profiling.” Huh ???? Someone physically performs an illegal act you certainly know who to arrest without regard to race. But how do you arrest an illegal without first visually identifying the “suspect” as hispanic?

Stop welfare, government freebies, anchor child nonsense who automatically get their “caregiver” free Us government money, and many of the illegals would never come here and many others would go home.

Just what we need in “the land of the free”. Police stopping everyone who doesn’t “look” like a white anglo Protestant and demanding identification from them. As the sheriff said….we no longer need a crime to stop someone and ask for ID.

At least this sheriff has the fortitude and leadership capabilites sorely lacking in the Obama adminisitration to protect the borders from ILLEGAL INTRUSION by various people who may want to cause harm to American citizens. Obama can use Latinos to win re election, he can buy and swing votes, he can buy the media for propaganda purposes, he can cloak every government agency in secrecy,he can xcempt the SEC from FOIA, however the new awakened majority of Americans now know his agenda and will not accept it. 2010 is a pivot point for America, when will the MSM catch up with the will of the people?
Posted by: Downwithsocialism | July 28, 2010, 10:29 am 10:29 am
Former Clinton chief of staff George Steph (trying to pose as an unbiased reporter), is trying to use the sheriff as the face of this movement he is against. Too bad for him because America wants more sheriffs like him. He is very effective in reducing crime in his area by being tough within the law. Hopefully, more law enforcement will be as tough on criminals as he.

If Obama would just deal with the problem of Illegal Aliens coming into this country, and stop ignoring the states pleas for help with this major financial burden to the boarder states. If this government truly cared about these poor mexicans they would control the boarders to stop the horrible crimes being committed against them.

I agree with Hege1321. “Illegal” means it’s against the law. I hear people say most of the illegal immigrants aren’t criminals, just hard working people. I’ve worked with illegal immigrants when I worked construction. Most of them worked hard and were good at their jobs, but they were still illegally in the U.S. Everyone should have to go through the legal immigration process if they want to live in the U.S. It’s tougher, in Mexico, for immigrants than in the U.S. I have no problem with “legal” immigrants, either.

This is another great expression of how police make the laws and break the laws as they sit fit. Its a great way to get some money from those who wish to show lawful civil protesting. Notice he does not know the difference between civil protesting and civil disobediance. Silly cop, barely has enough brain to fit into the catagory of human. Maybe thats how he got the job. (Redundant) so guess what everybody is an immigrant and if anybody has to leave would be you because if you might not know your history Indians are the only legal ones here meaning “Spanish people have more right than anyone to be here because we are part Indians.(NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST AMERICA PUT IT TOGETHER…)

This is is insane. To take this to another level, how far are we from saying that law enforcement can question individuals suspected of being muslim, jewis, irish or a member of any other group that we may have issues with. And anyone who beleives that illegal immigrants are all hispanics is a fool. What about the illegal eastern europeans living in Phoenix (I know at least 20)? I dobut they would ever be questioned because they blend into white society. So this is a violation of equal enforcement. Arpaio is a blithering idiot and a dangerous one at that!

For any of you who disagree with this law, you are PART OF THE PROBLEM. If you are not here legally, get out. Plain and simple.
How is this racial profiling? Have you even READ the new law? Very doubtful.
You are 100% correct. If a police officer sees someone with dark skin, walks up to them and demands paperwork, it’s racial profiling. That is NOT what this law allows. (Again, READ IT!)
To be questioned about your status in this country, you must have already been stopped for doing something illegal – and yes, speeding is illegal.
We have some of the laziest immigration laws in the WORLD.
Do you think Mexico would be as polite as to ask us for papers if we do something illegal in their country? Hell No! They’d lock us up and throw away the keys leaving our families to wonder whatever happened to us.
If you do not support this law, get out. You don’t deserve to be a citizen anyway.
Posted by: JayB. | July 28, 2010, 11:22 am 11:22 am
2 sides to this coin. Illegals should know they cannot get away by breaking the law, plain and simple. At the same time, we cannot allow our beloved USA to become a Stalinist Police State where the uniform has more power than the people that elected them.
Reality is that a high % of illegals fit a certain profile. So it is natural that one would expect to find more illegals from that population pool than others. Simple law of probability. Nothing magical or mystical about it.
Posted by: JSmith | July 28, 2010, 11:23 am 11:23 am
As a liberl, I see this law as a good thing. This will stop corrupt and greedy Republican businessmen from absuing the illegal status of foreigners.
Arrest any illegal immigrant who is violating another law , hand them over to the Feds, and let the INS sort out any technicalities.
Maybe this will get Congress acting on immigration reform.
Posted by: Wayne | July 28, 2010, 11:23 am 11:23 am
By the way… here are the immigration laws of MEXICO. The free ride is over. Go Home.
1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools.
2. All ballots will be in this nation’s language
3. All government business will be conducted in our language.
4. Non-residents will NOT have the right to vote no matter how long they are here.
5. Non-citizens will NEVER be able to hold political office
6 Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, or other government assistance programs. Any burden will be deported.
7. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
8. If foreigners come here and buy land options will be restricted. Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
9. Foreigners may have no protests; no demonstrations, no waving of a foreign flag, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our president or his policies. These will lead to deportation.
10. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be actively hunted and when caught, sent to jail until your deportation can be arranged. All assets will be taken from you.
Posted by: JayB. | July 28, 2010, 11:26 am 11:26 am
The answer is simpler than you think. All illegals should be given 90 days to register. They pay a fine, and are issued a one time, five year permit to be in the United States. Within that five year period, they either learn to speak, read, and write in English, and pass the US citizenship test, or they are deported. Period, end of story. If they are willing to risk everything to get to the US, then they should be willing to do whatever it takes to earn the right to remain here. If not, go home, you don’t deserve to live in our country.

People who say this is racial profiling can’t prove it and are spreading FEAR. They ASSUME this is racial motivated. You know what they say about people who “assume” – “Assuming something makes an A.. out of U and ME.” Get it? It would be stupid of Arizona (with the whole world watching) to “just pull someone over because they look Latino.” Think people. Go Arizona!

The Sheriff is there to enforce the law. This law only makes it so that if law enforcement makes contact with someone for other reasons, then they can ask about their status. Nowhere does it say they can drive up on someone out of the blue and check. We all have to produce ID when asked. If someone doesn’t have any, the officer is going to check until he finds out who we are. It doesn’t matter what color or whatever we are. This is clear cut. The problem comes in when we have to figure out how to deal with the folks here illegally in a humane manner. As Americans we can’t drop families with children off in the desert.

Posted by: david | July 28, 2010, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm
I used to think it was clean cut, but we have to split this issue into different pieces. Defending our border from all intrusion is one, and it’s the big one. If someone commits a crime and is illegal, they need to be deported, but at least in a humane manner. Another big one is that we need to make a way that people here illegally that want to leave can return to their countries in a decent, safe manner. Maybe provide them with information on how to return legally, and set up a system where they can do this. The rest………I just don’t know what would work right now. I’m still thinking about that one.

run all over us compliments of the Government. This seems a little harsh? put America back to work and pass laws where you cannot hire them and a hefty fine if you do, they will go back home where they are citizens.

Some of these people are trying to get elected and they know that the only way is to inflame passion about something that has nothing to do with ideas about fixing the economy or other major national issues the country faces. Social Security, Deficits, Medicare, Medicaid, Spending on unnecessary wars. Why do you all blame Obama for this when this has been an ongoing issue for years. I believe that because we have an African American president that this is an issue. I did not hear anything when Bush was President. Why racial hatred now.. Because we have a Black president. It hurts but let me tell you something people. Get over this and focus on actual solutions to problems instead of just racial hatred. This law is pure racial hatred at its roots. Might as well start wearing a star of David. History does repeat itself. We start with things like this and then keep it going until something else like Concentration Camps will start being built. Immigrants will always be coming here or moving there or going somewhere else. What do you do with someone that gets deported 1, 2, 3 times. Are you going to keep him in Jail for 20 or 30 years just because he crossed the border to find work. Multiply that by 12 million people plus their families because this makes their families part of that. Next would be to take their citizenship away or what..

I support this state I lived there for many years and the violence from drug gangs has only gotten worse. Not everyone is a gang member but we have forgotten that immigrants are people looking for a better life seeking citizenship. A lot of Migrant workers stay in Phoenix undocumented for decades having children who are then citizens but they don’t take the initiative to become citizens themselves. Many have more than one name and committ crimes and cannot be caught by authorities. The Mexican government does not help its own people yet they expect us to just let them wander across the border and take care of them. The border states have huge deficits in their own budgets intended to take care of Americans because Mexico wont pay us for their illegals and the Incarcerated Mexicans who have broght drugs or murdered in our country. It is time that this law finally be enforced if you want to live here you must be legal.

the cops here in AZ are too busy and understaffed to just go looking for people who aren’t white, and asking them for papers. So many opponents of this just assume that EVERY cop and deputy is racist, and will automatically just go looking for people with brown skin. Not the case. Get the Fed govt to do their job, figure out a way for productive and upstanding illegals to gain citizenship, make them learn the language and understand that it is a priviledge to live in the US, and then this law is a mute point.

California is against Arizona’s efforts + they aren’t doing much to to hinder illegals from crossing Mexico to California and look at how well that’s going for them….they are BROKE and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that there are more Mexicans in Los Angeles than any other city in Mexico except Mexico City! They are so desperate for money they will probably legalize marijuana and they are thinking about reducing the pay to city workers. How ironic that in California many of the legal government workers will be making LESS than the illegal aliens making cash under the table!

Here’s a good question for all the bleeding harts wanting to let anybody into this country.
Do you really want neighbors living next to you who have no identity legally? Think about it, the U.S., city, state & police department know who YOU are and hold YOU accountable for the law, your car, property, bills etc.
Is it fair and safe that they have NO IDEA who your neigbors are? Where they come from? What their background is?
There is ZERO accountability with illegal aliens! If they accidently burn your house down, hit your car etc. they can simply drive off and leave you holding the bag.
I would not be comfortable living next to people with an unknown or false identity!

To mrgmorgan56: “This Sheriff is an idiot and a bigiot of the worst ilk. Together the Governot and the Sheriff make a meager human.” Why, because they’re tired of the federal government not doing their jobs with immigration and securing our borders? Illegals BROKE THE LAW when they came over illegally. IT’S A CRIME! Your comment just shows what a real loser you really are. Period.

The Arizona police will hand over illegal aliens to the INS…a federal government agency that may contain inept management and uncaring and underpayed staff.
It is possible the INS will be unable to perform their jobs effectivly and will release the illegal aliens back into Arizona only to repeat the cycle.

If we leave this country we voluntarily give up all our rights whether going to Canada or any place else. Anybody in our country that is not a US Citizen also has absolutly NO RIGHTS. Good for arizona, I am with them. Its time our government started taking care of its own instead of favoring and helping everyone else. In case you people who are blind to this, our country is in turmoil due to political greed and stupidity. Seems our government moto is give unto others and raise our citizens taxes.

a good man, we need more like him. Local sheriffs should begin to deputize citizens to help fight against the illegal criminals since Obama -and these autocratic judges- support the illegals over the rights of US citizens, landowners, and workers. Remember Obama, and Bush, support police state tactics against Americans (protestors, wiretaps, high taxation, free speech zones, TSA humiliations, etc) but not for illegals? A crazy world.

Go Arizona. The rest of the country is with you. That is with the exception of the illegals and the dopes that don’t mind the increase in taxes it causes; the people that come over that might be murderers and possibly Al Queda terrorists sneaking through.

I am amazed that people are all of a sudden upset that police are going to demand identification from people already stopped for another reason. I am a retired Deputy Sheriff from Florida and I never once released anyone from my custody until I etablished their identity to a reasonable certainty. Every cop I worked with operated the same way. If I had a legal right to stop the person, i have a legal right to determine their identity. Sheriff Arpaio comes across as cocky because he knows he’s right and he will have the last word against the protestors. I hope they all get deported for their trouble.

Thanks Arizona for taking a stand against “Breaking the law.” Illegal immigrants overrun our system with free education, housing and medical care. If such great workers, build up MEXICO and stay. Black, white or otherwise, if you are here illegally, you should be deported. They don’t pay taxes, they use the system and never pay their fare share. Teacher in Texas!! Since – US Citizens pay Taxes to pay for services. Look what your taxes, which will also increase in 2011, pays for:
You do the math…
■$11 billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to illegal aliens each year by state governments.
■Illegal households create a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion a year. If given amnesty, this number could grow to more than $29 billion.
■$1.9 billion dollars a year is spent on food-assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC and free school lunches for illegal aliens.
■$1.6 billion is spent on the federal prison and court system for illegal aliens.
■$2.5 billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens.
■About 21 percent of the population of U.S. prisons is classified as “noncitizens” from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. About 5 percent is listed as “unknown.”

Illegal aliens come in all races. I realize that the majority of them are going to be Latino in AZ, but really what this law does is allow a cop in a traffic stop to ask ANYONE for proof of citizenship, which they already do when they ask you for a Driver’s License. If I were a cop, the standard I would be using to ask someone to prove citizenship is completely auditory. Do you speak American English? If you sound Jamaican or Russian or French, I’m going to find out your status. Same is true if you sound like a native Spanish speaker. People who are here legally and have fought for the right to become naturalized should be proud to prove it and glad that the system is protecting them.

You’ll never see Obama go to Arizona for any reason. WHY? He does’t even have a birth certificate except the one in Kenya he doesn’t like to talk about.
He’s working hard on immigration so it will legalize his own illegal status to be President. Then Any foreign person can become the President of the USA.
Then it will be easy for China to forclose on our debt and take over the country without firing a shot.

I am reading alot of comments regarding racial profiling. FYI Immigration Customs Enforcement just arrested three illegal immigrant caucassion polish men for attempting to fraudently obtain a drivers license in New Mexico. Strange how there were no crys for help or claims of racial profiling on these mens behalf. Nor did any crying liberal outfit lend their services to these men. Immigrants is a misuse of the word. I think we are talking about illegals, or illegal aleins, both of which are criminals.

What will happen, and is happening now, is that those working hard at low paid jobs in the America will emigrate to states where the nazzies are not in control and where they can continue their productive and community serving lives.
That will leave an estimated 55%+ of their jobs open and no one to fill them. Produce will eityher hit a new high for home grown or vanish forever like the mechanized jobs did under Bush, and many US horticulturists will go to the wall, the banks will not trust them with loans, and they will let their fields stand empty.
Imports from central and south America will dominate the US produce markets and the poor will pay the price.
The White Sepremacist groups that are leading the border onslaughts and the tea parties will wander back under cover of night when things get really rough. they are all mouth and trousers but no brains and no common sense.
This is the war that Germany waged against Judaism, Egypt against Israelites, Israel against Palestinians, and Tutu against Hutu and in every age and clime.
It is dehumanizing, illiterate, and the sign of a country whose best days are left behind them.
If that’s what you want, go for it. When a man lights a fire under his neighbors house he conflagrates his own dwelling. Confucius.

As a cop, i find this Arpaio guy totally offensive and he is a disgrace to legitimate law enforcement. I have a question for the Arizona GOP: If the feds have not done anything to help control illegal immigration, then why did you wait until Obama was in office. Surely, AZ has had this problem for years, when Bush(es) and Clinton were in office, but yet we saw no lawsuits or legislation passed.. The GOP is still mad that a black man is president and will do anything to discredit or smear him. You could have easily passed laws years ago, but no. GOP are evil hypocrites

This is California’s immigration law:
834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.
(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.
(2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or leave the United States.
(3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal status and provide any additional information that may be requested by any other public entity.
(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city, county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.

For all you whiny people who say we shouldn’t pursue illegal immigrants because of profiling, why don’t we just stop enforcing laws altogether?? After all, some kind of profile is used to track down each and every type of offender known. Unfortunately, this particular law requires a racial profile. They still can’t just say, “Hey, this guy looks Mexican, let’s pull him over and force him to prove his citizenship.” There must be a legitimate reason for a stop to occur first. If they are here legally, it won’t be a problem. If not, it will open up a job position for a legal citizen. Or, is that not what we want here? Breaking the law is the same no matter what race you are or what social status you hold. If it hadn’t been allowed to get out of control, there would be no need for stricter laws to regain control. I have no problem with anyone wanting to make a new, better life in the United States, but there is a process for doing it legally.

I just saw again on the news that illegals do jobs that americans won’t . What job is that. I suppose no one cleaned our crappers until there were illegals right. My husband has worked on a hot tar roofing crew in 120 degree weather and on a road resurfacing crew when it was 118 . I worked in a check cashing store where most of the people who came in were illegals cashing 500- 1500 dollar checks. I know no american will work for that kind of money . And noone will work for walmart either right? The only difference is when we try to get public help (food stamps , medical. etc .) we have to prove everything . I have a girlfriend who works for department of health and social services and she told me that the money they make is not considered because they are illegal. No social security , no nothing so they get foodstamps and medical and they work and everything who wouldn’t want to live here we make life so easy for them. Why do you think they can afford to fight this legal battle over immigration.I left Arizona because They are taking over everything . God bless Sheriff Joe and Governor Brewer. They are true grit americans. God Bless America

Hey — João Pessoa, Brazil please go back to Brazil if you do not like American Law – we are tired of having our hospitals and other public services used up to the point of deficit spending — by poeple who come here illegally and get services and skip to the next town and think they can continue to have entitlement — the only entitlement illegals have is to face the laws that protect against watering down of civilized society – if they are breaking the law by being here without permission to stay — they face being shipped back or need to pay some kind of amnesty taxes for being here. They come here because America is a great country or to get away fron something worse — if you want something great — find a way to come on in “legally” and then pay taxes and enjoy the environment set up for all races and creeds and any kind of person to be as free as human society allows” The laws help us maintain that goodness. It is a privilege to be born in America and not everyone can be. Our American society and economy can not support free flowing boarders. How would you like having people say – oh you have a nice back yard – I will bring my family and come and camp out there? Just try to kick me out now! People will fight for what they have worked for – people fight back when their country or home is invaded by someone who wants to take what is theirs. My back yard is for my children and Grand children — not for someone hopping over the fense.

We don’t care if you come over here but if you want to be here and you want to be a U.S. citizen then do what the rest of us do. Pay taxes, get off food stamps, pay your own rent pay for health care like we do. The ppl you work for are laughing at you because they pay you so little to work for them and work you like a dog. Do whine because the police are doing their jobs.

Sheriff Arpeio of the greaer Phoenix area is a law unto himself and currently has many lawsuits against him for illegal arrest and harassment of elected city and county officials. This sheriff breaks existing laws; if city or county officials object, he brings frivolous lawsuits against them as a scare tactic, while manyOF THE DUTIES OF THE SHERIFF’S DEPT. ARE NEGLECTED.
ABC, please investigate and make readers aware of the lawlessness of this sheriff.

Anyone who says they have read the bill and believe that police are aloud to racial profile, is a liar. The bill says like 20 times that police cannot stop someone based on race, origin, etc. The police will not be running around in the streets asking for ID. If someone is already detained or arrested for another offense, then the police will also check their immigration status. It won’t just be hispanics, will be mostly, because of locale, but if a white European is in Arizona and he can barely speak English, guess what?

Mexico’s immigration laws or way more strict than Arizona’s new law. Mexico will throw illegals in prison or deport them. They don’t put up with illegals, but Mexico wants the US to bend over backwards. Most every other country in the world, you have to immigrate legally or you get deported.

Arizona has a states’ right to defend itself. It is not Arizona’s fault they are located where they are.
Apparently, Washington DC prefers to accommodate an international ally (Mexico) at the expense of a mere state.
The administration has been right on so many issues but dead wrong on this one.

So much of the media emphasis is heart rending stories of nice illegals and little emphasis of Arizonians who are endangered by border crossing illegals even on their property.
Which side is the mainstream media on anyway? Don’t bother answering that question, the media like the ACLU seems to always come up on the wrong side of an issue.

From an economic perspective, illegal immigration has reduced wage rates and taken jobs from legal Americans. Wage rates have been depressed by illegal immigrants willing to take jobs paying less than the market rate. For example, suppose carpenters make $25 per hour. If an illegal immigrant is willing to do the job for $15 per hour, the contractor has the advantage of lower labor costs, which would allow him to underbid competitors or make excess profits if priced at the same amount. Thus, by adding to the supply of cheap labor, illegal immigrants have reduced the wages for American’s in those positions in instances where they are competing against an illegal immigrant for a position. In the example above, the American carpenter making $25 per hour would have to cut his wage to $15 in order to get the job. Thus, illegal immigration results in wage erosion especially for low to moderate skilled positions.
It is often stated by illegal immigrant advocates that illegal immigrants are doing the jobs that Americans won’t do. This is a red herring argument. The reality is illegal immigrants are doing jobs Americans were unwilling to do at the wage levels that were being paid. For example, if being a janitor paid $100,000 per year, there would be many more Americans interested in janitor positions. At minimum wage, interest wanes significantly for legal American workers. Removing illegal immigrants from the labor market would reduce the supply of labor available. Since the demand for the work to be performed is relatively consistent, (they still have to dump the trash nightly at office buildings), wages would rise for these positions if illegal immigrants were removed from the labor market. Thus, American citizens would be better off.
The costs of illegal immigration are also ignored by illegal immigrant advocates. Their argument that illegal immigrants pay taxes misses the basic point of whether the value of the government services they receive exceed whatever amount, if any, that they paid in taxes. For example, if the Illegal immigrant paid $1,000 in taxes and consumed $2,000 in services, then we are not economically better off. Indeed, under this example, every 1,000 illegal immigrants would cost the taxpayers $1,000,000.
As the Obama administration edges towards amnesty, every American needs to think about whether the President is representing the interests of Americans. If you believe he is then please explain to me how American citizens are benefited by adding more than 12 million + mostly low skilled, poorly educated workers to the labor market?

I wish we had a sheriff Joe here in Iowa, and that our state would adopt the AZ. Law, because like ever other state, where also becoming over run with illegal aliens. I think these people have a lot of nerve. They break into our home ( country)and then demand we feed them, give them our jobs, educate their children, give them free medical care, ectra. Iam tired of the bleeding hearts saying these people only take jobs that Americans won’t take. That is just so much propagenda, by organizations who are promoting this invasion. ICE needs to be doing their job, and rounding up these people and deporting them NOW. GO ARIZONA. Hopefully all other states will follow your lead.

There is no such thing as anchor children. Its only logical, that if a couple breaks into your home, and the female gives birth while in your home, their child dosen’t become the home owners child. So why is it that people believe the propagenda that 2 illegal aliens children are automaticlly citizens of this country. The 14th amendment doesn’t give them any rights. It applys to only those who are legally in this country. These children should be deported right along with the parents.

Illegal immigrants have the right to remain silent while you are being deported!
Sheriff Joe for President, will have my vote.

Keep protesting! You’re showing just how bad you want 0′bama to lose……first the mid terms in november will decimate his demo support, then if he doesn’t get the message, then he will be a one term President. But he WILL supercede Carter as the worst EVER!

This sherriff is really racist,he is going to fall one day and get the electric chair he is commiting a crime by treating human beings like dogs. I belief every person should have a chance. All emmigrants from illegal asians to illegal italians to illegal hispanics ,latinos should just head home and see who will do the jobs they left behind, the dirty nasty jobs I bet it wont be an american. With that all happening the economy GDP will decrease and we will go into a BIG recession because many immigrants spent their money HERE in the U.S not all of them go to WELFARE to beg for help they work long hours with sweaty forheads for lower then minimum wages jobs that americans dont wanna do. America is a free country but at the same time its not we pay taxes we pay water we pay trash in other countries its different. If you dont pay ur taxes every year get ready to be kicked out of your house the state takes over your screwed, the world is just unfair.

I applaud the State of Arizona and Maricopa county Sheriff Joe Arpai. We have to stop acting line fools and enforce our laws. Starting by protecting the board and deportation. No ifs ands or buts. It has to be done. Mexicans are playing white and black Americans for fools while our country is invaded and occupied. Just take a simple look around!.

Sheriff Joe is great – we need this no nonsense stance. If you are not breaking the law and are an abiding citizen, you should have nothing to worry about.

This guy ROCKS, he upholding the law, unlike the Feds. The Feds want to give legal status again, like they did in the past. I know most of you were not around when they made all the illegals ….legal status.

Its really interesting to me how the Sheriff NEVER answered the question when asked if the law leads to racial profiling. He also didn’t answer when George asked him what the criteria is for stopping someone. He doesn’t answer because its TOTAL racial profiling!!!!!
Posted by: Retro Air Jordan | August 2, 2010, 9:04 pm 9:04 pm
Racial profiling?? Each of you have already racially profiled Hispanics as being targeted as illegal, How are you different than Sheriff Joe. None of you have mentioned any other possible nationality as being illegal. Constitutional Rights are those rights bestowed upon AMERICAN CITIZENS. Not illegal or legal immigrants. Their rights are those bestowed upon them when they are in their on country. GO GET THEM JOE…
