The original Narcissus was punished for disdaining people in the real world. Superbly beautiful as he was, he fell in love with his own image in a pool, and unable to encounter him in reality faded away; he was then transformed into the flower that bears his name. Those Greek myths, from which Freud learned, can still teach a thing or two.
The modern narcissism Mr. Brooks describes is more aggressive.
