McChrystal: Service Did Not End Like I’d Imagined
From Kirit Radia:
"This has the potential to be awkward," General Stanley McChrystal said tonight at his retirement ceremony – his first public comments since he was fired by President Obama as the commander of troops in Afghanistan.
His 34-year-old Army career ended abruptly on a sweltering parade field at Fort McNair in Washington, DC just one month after he and his aides were quoted in a Rolling Stone article bashing senior members of the administration's leadership, including the president himself.
Though tonight's ceremony contained the usual pomp and circumstance reserved for a four-star general, it marked the unceremonious end for a military leader hailed as a visionary savior of the war in Afghanistan just months ago when President Obama rolled out a new war strategy based in large part on McChrystal's recommendations.
"My service did not end as I'd imagined," he conceded, addressing his inglorious termination directly.
"There are misconceptions about the loyalty and service of some dedicated professionals that will likely take some time, but I will be corrected," McChrystal added. He also mentioned unfulfilled commitments to comrades and missions left incomplete by his sudden departure.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates praised McChrystal, who previously led the special operations teams in Iraq that killed al-Qaeda-in-Iraq leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi in 2006.
"Over the past decade, arguably no single American has inflicted more fear, more loss of freedom and more loss of life on our country's most vicious and violent enemies than Stan McChrystal," Gates said.
At the start of the ceremony McChrystal appeared relaxed, flashing a wide grin as he walked to the review stand with Secretary of State Robert Gates and Army Chief of Staff General George Casey. He even cracked a joke about his termination.
"I have stories on all of you, photos of many, and I know a Rolling Stone reporter," he joked to his colleagues.
McChrystal said he was approaching the future with hope, not sadness. He spent much of his speech praising his wife, Annie.
"She's here, like she's always been there when it matters," he told the audience of VIPs, colleagues, friends, and family.
McChrystal joked about moving back in with her after spending so many years deployed. He said his attempts to schedule regular family video teleconferences, the type he held frequently while in the military, via Skype have been unsuccessful. The same goes for the "tactical guidance" he's issued his family: one meal a day and morning physical training, his famous daily regime.
In a tongue-in-cheek assessment likely similar to ones he read and drafted about insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan during his career, McChrystal reported that since he's moved back in and tried to implement those changes at home his wife has begun stocking up on amonium nitrate fertilizer (commonly used in bombs) and seems uninterested in reintegration. He judged the situation as "serious" and "deteriorating" and told Secretary Gates he'd need at least 40,000 troops to take her on.

By firing McChrystal Obama is trying to liken himself to President Lincoln firing General Grant. Instead Obama is likening himself to another historic national leader who meddled too much with his military in a time of war (1945 Germany).

“By firing McChrystal Obama is trying to liken himself to President Lincoln firing General Grant.”
Except President Lincoln didn’t fire General Grant.
He did fire McClellan.
“Instead Obama is likening himself to another historic national leader who meddled too much with his military in a time of war (1945 Germany).”
In 1945 Germany it no longer mattered what Hitler did the damage was done in 1941 with the invasion of the Soviet Union and the Ardennes offensive in 1944 was the last gasp.
So do you base your history on what Glenn Beck tells you or do you piece it together with sugar packets?

Hahahahahahaha you tell um Ryan!!!
as far McC goes; if you would have done your job, followed the rules etc you’d still be losing the war you were fighting and would have nothing to whine about. Instead you chose to make an @ss of yourself and get sh!tcanned. Good riddance!! Now please take your pension that I have to pay for, go away, and shut the heII UP!!!

dk, I suppose you’ll have no problem paying Charlie Rangel’s pension after he “retires?”

McChrystal’s only mistake was in verbalizing that which we all know to be true. I know it sucks for him to be taking his leave after Obama having the last word, as it were, but so be it. He served his country well, and deserves a respectful retirement.

.
After spending his career fighting Communists he never imagined that he would get fired by one.

God Bless you, General. Pay no mind to the ignorant aholes that post here that criticize you. Probably non-military, Obama kool-aid drinkers have no business commenting since they never served their country! Morons!

Col David Hackworth was correct with his writings about what goes on in Washington and the Pentagon. Google his name or read some of his books. I’ve read them all.

I’m surprised he hasn’t already announced that he’s running for Congress. After all, he’s already demonstrated the only qualification the Republicans consider important: slandering Obama.
Hypocrites forget that they called entertainers unpatriotic for insulting Bush. Now they think a general has every right? Give me a break.

Javalation, you might want to check your facts: McChrystal has been a Dem all his life. If he runs for Congress, it will be as a Democrat, not a Republican. And the general is certainly not alone. Poll numbers (even from NBC) confirm that many of those who voted for Obama in 2008 now condemn him, along with his false promises…

We need more men like General McChrystal, men who speaks out when their boss is a threat to the failure of a difficult war.

And cindy, how many screen names have you registered to this site so far? My count has you at 8.

Dear young voter: One thing you must remember it may seem smart to disagree with your president but there are rules when you are in the service…rules of chain of command. He broke them. Obama did not want to fire him in fact he resigned because 8 other generals said he should be fired and he knew he had no future here. It is o.k. to have a difference of opinion but say it to the correct person the president, in private. He liked boxing in the president. He felt he could not refuse his demands if he did this. What is clear here is he did not do the right thing by going to a reporter. He said he did not think he would print it..REALLY? What reporter would not do this story? President Obama instituted his plans and that is what they were using so what was his problem? And why was he in Paris drinking instead of being with his men? You don’t have to like your boss but when you sound off you better be in a closet because it will make news. Obama has listened to his commanders on the ground and respects their opinion and anyone who has worked with this president knows this. All he had to do was to speak with him and none of this would have happened. Sorry…he knew the risk and he took it.

The issue is, did he lie? No one with a brain believes he lied.
Did he break the rules? Yeah, buddy, you bet.
What do you think? Myself, I want to see the pictures. Maybe he got drunk and passed out on a tabletop …
