Must-See TV: Rep. Weiner Gone Wild On House Floor
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: Much of the debate on the floor of the House of Representatives is about as lively and entertaining as watching paint dry, but the blistering rant by Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-NY, on Thursday night was one of the most animated diatribes seen and heard on Capitol Hill in recent years. As the clock ticked towards 9pm, Weiner launched into a furious spiel directed at Republicans who moments earlier had shot down a bill that would have provided health care benefits for first responders and workers at Ground Zero following the 9-11 terrorist attacks. “Great courage to wait until all members have already spoken and then stand up and wrap your arms around procedure,” Weiner said sarcastically, mocking GOP lawmakers before he let loose on them. “We see it in the United States Senate every single day where members say, ‘We want amendments, we want debate, we want amendments, but we’re still a no.’ And then we stand up and say, ‘If only we had a different process, we’d vote yes.’” “You vote yes if you believe yes!” Weiner roared. “You vote in favor of something if you believe it's the right thing! If you believe it's the wrong thing, you vote no!” The congressman was then interrupted by Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, drawing a swift and scathing rebuke from Weiner. “I will not yield to the gentleman and the gentleman will observe regular order,” he screamed at King. “The gentleman will observe regular order!” “The gentleman thinks if he gets up and yells he’s going to intimidate people into believing he’s right,” Weiner yelled. “He is wrong. The gentleman is wrong! The gentleman is providing cover for his colleagues rather than doing the right thing.” “It's Republicans wrapping their arms around Republicans rather than doing the right thing on behalf of the heroes. It is a shame, a shame! If you believe this is a bad idea to provide health care, then vote no. But don't give me the cowardly view that if only it was a different procedure…” Weiner was then interrupted a second time by King. “The gentleman will observe regular order and sit down,” demanded Weiner, pointing and gesturing at King. “I will not – the gentleman will sit! The gentleman is correct in sitting.” “I will not, I will not stand here and listen to my colleagues and say, ‘If only I had a different procedure that allows us to stall, stall, and then vote no.’ Instead of standing up and defending your colleagues and voting no on this humane bill, you should urge them to vote yes, something the gentleman has not done,” Weiner concluded, pounding on the podium as he wrapped up his outraged rant. And with that, Democrats in the chamber delivered a round of applause for their fired-up colleague. Watch it here. -Matthew Jaffe An update from ABC's Z. Byron Wolf: The debate continued on Fox this morning, when Weiner and King were interviewed standing next to each other in a House office building. “This is phony hypocrisy,” says King, pointing at Weiner. “How’s the crackerjack Peter King Whip organization working out,” Weiner asks at one point. But don’t get the impression that either of these media-trained political pros was ever close to boiling over on cable TV. Despite their bluster, both men kept their faces turned toward the camera. For the bulk of the Fox News interview, the men are speaking to each other and standing next to each other, but not really looking at each other.Watch it here.

Santorum: Money Will Not Defeat Obama, Ideas Will
Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
Very entertaining watching the fireworks but the story failed to mention that it was the Democrats who presented the bill in such a way that it required a two-third (2/3) majority to pass. Weiner had the votes (and then some) under a simple majority vote. He and his democrits did not want and “up or down” vote that might have resulted in amendments being tacked on.

Possibly this guy should visit one of those hospitals in NY (the rotten apple) and get some mental help. I sure hope that if he is married, his wife gives him a lot of room in the house so he doesn’t explode over what cannnel the tv is on. Sore loser? You bet. Really Norman? Are you so loyal to your party that you’d push aside 9/11 first responders. What procedure could be so incorrect to delay benefits for American heroes?
Instead let’s throw insults at the opposing party.
I’d love to know everyone’s response to a bill without knowing their party’s popular opinion. Maybe they’d stick up for what’s right over what’s desirable for the party.

Sorry, Tom…….just do the math. Weiner says he got 94% of demcrats to vote on the bill and 12 republicans……..the Dems are in a sizeable majority…..they could vote down any amendments at any time during the process…..they were worried about amendments from DEMOCRITS. Weiner is the same hypocrite who refused to admit(after multiple requests to answer) that it was the IRS that was given the authority to enforce the mandatory purchase of health care provision of obamacare.
Posted by: socialism101 | July 30, 2010, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm
The point of not having ammendments was because there shouldn’t be any special interests on this bill. Either you support the first responder heroes of 9/11 getting health care or you don’t. The republicans don’t unless they can “add” something to it. Such hypocrisy! Here they CRY about the masque near Ground Zero, but they don’t support the first responders getting health care. Once again, the GOP show their spots.
Posted by: Sally | July 30, 2010, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm
Sally…Sally..Sally…..you fsil to see what’s really going on. How can republicans get any amendments passed when the democrits control the house by a sizeable majority??? I guess you thought there were a lot of amendments by republicans in the health care vote, right?? What a joke that was. They weren’t worried by amendments from republicans……they were worried about amendments from their OWN PARTY. Have you read the bill??? Perhaps amendments to some of the provisions were warranted? Perhaps there were some procedural or administrative provisions that needed tweaking. Perhaps even some amendments would have been embraced by democrits.
Typical democrit hypocrisy…..if we say it is a bill for 9/11 first responders, then by gosh don’t question what it actually says…….just vote for it. We’ve all seen what that philosophy did in the health care debate.

And without amendments the Republicans say HELL NO!!!!! to first responders health concerns. Your point? Land of the Free, home of the ill and dying first responders? That’s OUR America!

I applaud this mans courage for speaking out. I feel that he speaks for all Americans who are fed up with Republicans voting “No” on every bill that would help the average American, but never met a tax break for the rich and special interests that they couldn’t not vote “Yes” to.
He’s mad as hell and he’s tired of taking it! And I don’t blame him. This bill is for the first responders of 911, that 9 years later are still suffering and dying, and going broke because the government has failed to provide the necessary aid and medical care for them.
Its a travesty and the Republicans ought to be ashamed! But I guess you don’t need shame when you’ve got all those rich and powerful friends, now do you?
Shame on the Republican party and anyone who dares support and defend them on their outrageous stalling tactics in congress.
And shame on all of you idiots who call yourselves republicans! You’re a bunch of simple minded morons who only believe what you hear on Fox. Never mind that there are multiple other news networks and the majority of them don’t report anything close to the absurdity of the crap they air on that B.S. Fox network.
Shame on you all!

Perhaps I should call in my friend “math101″ to help you understand that the Dems could have easily passed the vote with a simple majority AND prevented any and all republican amendments…..they chose not to and instead procedurally postured the bill to require a 2/3 majority in order for it to pass. Why??? Because they were worried about amendments and “add ons” [can you say pork] from DEMOCRITS.
Here’s a bright idea……why don’t the democrits just “deem the bill passed”?
Perhaps democrit weiner would like a little cheese with his whine.

Shame on both parties for doing “business as usual” for something that is so simple. The only whiners here are the Republicans who are committed to be the absolute party of “NO”. “No” to anything that would be good for Main Street America. Repubs have a problem giving the unemployed support but don’t have a problem fighting to keep the Bush tax cuts for the 3% greedy, wealthy of our nation. They had a real problem with providing health care for all Americans but would kill to keep the golden, bloated benefit packages that allow them ‘Cadillac’ health care….at taxpayers expense. We know by now who the real whiners are the absolute party of “NO”….the Republicans.

Tom is right on the procedure. King was right to say the Dems are in control. Therefore puzzling to understand why Weiner was upset. Dems made the 2/3 rule on this bill, why? What else is buried in the bill? As with Stimulus and health care, lots of Trojan Horses. Why can’t Congress just pass a clean bill that does what its title says. It’s like passing the “Stop Wifebeating” bill and then castigating the NO voters who object to the inclusion of other measures in the bill like mandatory castration, stoning, confiscation of assets.
Posted by: Timothy | July 30, 2010, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm
The Dems are very good at feigning outrage. It is a documented tactic that even Obama has used. It deflects attention from the real agenda. Go back to the beginning in the administration, and the ‘outrage’ over AIG bonuses. Remember busloads of screaming SEIU members sent to terrorize the families of AIG employees’ at their homes? Obama encouraged it. Remember Schumer telling them to give back their bonuses, or else they would “take it” – and sure enough, the House voted to tax their bonuses 90%. Remember “the Boston PD acted stupidly” — Remember Pelosi’s tears as she compared the Tea Party to the violence she saw in the streets 40 years ago.
Crocodile tears, ginned up indignance, it’s all part of the magic show.
Watch the OTHER hand, folks. Always watch the other hand.

To ‘Batman’ -
It’s about time the GOP grew a pair and stopped trying to ‘reach across the aisle’ to the Democrat vipers.
From now on they should wrap themselves proudly in the “Party of No” that the Democrat talking point memo wants to tar them with. It is a badge of honor. And I will add three more things:
Re-move every senator, congressman, governor and elected official who ignores the will of the majority.
Re-ject funding of every incremental dime that takes away the rights of the majority to ‘get even’ with them on behalf of the minority.
Re-peal – most important. Repeal it all and start over.

Ann, do you think when January 1, 2011 rolls around that the lapse of the Bush tax cuts will only apply to the wealthiest 3%??? Better check again before spouting more of the party line. The lowest marginal tax rate will jump from 10% to 15%. That will hit the little man pretty hard. I can’t wait for the democrat sheeples to try and figure out why the payroll deductions on their paychecks go up. I am sure you and the rest of the democrits will come up with some excuse. Maybe the “blame bush” strategy will work. With regard to the “cadillac” health care plans, would that be like the ones congress kept for themselves when they exempted themselves from coming under the new law?
The party of “NO”? Weiner sounds like the neighborhood bully who gave the other team two free touchdowns and then cries fould when his team gets beat. Can you explain to the readers of this story why the Democrits structured the bill to require a 2/3 majority vote when they had the votes to pass it by a safe margin? And before you say “to stop republican amendments” how could ANY republican amendments get past their overwhelming majority??

The fact is that for all the talk about supporting 9/11 Responders we all know where GOPers stand.
Posted by: New Wave | July 30, 2010, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm
If the Republicans are truly in favor of supporting the first responders, they will now introduce their own bill and let it come to a vote.
If the Republicans are truly in favor of reducing the deficit, they will be the first to support the expiration of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.
Let’s see if they put their money where their mouths are….
Posted by: Joel | July 30, 2010, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm
Joel, when the Bush tax cuts lapse, the lowest marginal rate will jump from 10% to 15%. Do you think that will hit the “wealthy” only? Who hires people and creates jobs?? Small businesses. 95% of all jobs are created by small business and most of those are sole proprietorships or sub-s corporations where the taxes are paid on their personal return. You think those jobs are going to come from the keynesian stimulus of the obama spending. Did you see him on the View yesterday??? He claimed that his stimulus package created 600,000 jobs. What he failed to tell you was that he had spent FIVE HUNDRED BILLION of the stimulus so far. Do the math Joel….that is $833,333.33 spent per job created so far (and more spending is coming).
With regard to the bill that weiner could not get passed, do you know who one of the co-sponsors was?? Republican Peter King of New York. Why did the democrits sponsor it so that it required a 2/3 majority to pass when they had plenty of votes to pass it by a simple majority? Have you read the bill? Why not allow amendments by other democrits if there are questionable provisions in the law? Just because they say it is a bill to “help first responders” does not mean the language in the bill is pure and pristine (see Timothy’s post above).

It’s a disgrace that the Republicans blocked this bill from heroes that saved the lives of hundreds in the attacks…instead of doing the right thing..whether someone is Dem or with the Gop to vote against this bill is a disgrace…because of ‘procedures’…I hope people remember this when the elections come up and if you are a police officer or firefighter and save lives and need healthcare…you won’t get it because of a ‘procedural’ error…I’m sure the heroes that died during 9/11 didn’t think twice about a ‘procedural’ way to save the lives of victims that day!!!!!
Posted by: hello_there | July 30, 2010, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm
Should more Republicans have voted for this bill? I don’t know I do not know the details or their rationale. But what we do know is that if the democrats wanted it to pass it would have, i.e. health care, the stimulus and the bail out of GM and Chrysler. It was more important for them to have an issue for the upcoming election than to get this bill past. And as for the poster “just saying” keep the Bush tax cuts for the 3% greedy, wealthy of our nation. First off the Bush cut taxes for everyone who paid taxes. If you pay more taxes you got more money back because every one got the same percentage. Second the rich pay the majority of taxes in this country. Third and last, letting the Bush tax cut expire will hit small business owners the hardest and since they do the majority of the hiring it will affect the economy negatively

The Bush Tax Cut was a bill that the GOP passed. It will expire and the DEMs will introduce a new tax cut bill targetted to the middle-class and for job creation.
Do not blame the DEMs for a bill that the GOP passed.

Shame on the Dems for expecting the US Taxpayer to pay for benefits for these first responders. What happened to the City and/or State of New York. That is who the responders worked for, the New York taxpayers should pay this bill. Raise their taxes, not mine.

Ok, let’s look at a hypothetical- Let’s say the Dems had not changed the procedure to mandate more votes for passage. Does that mean the Repubs would have voted “Yes?” Hmmm? As Mr. Weiner stated- if you believe in it, vote “yes,” if you don’t, vote “no.”
Back to reality- the Repubs voted no to the bill as it stands- as a bill that provides healthcare to 9/11 First Responders. So, the bottom line is that the Repubs voted no to helping these true American Heroes, who seriously need congress’ help now, because there was nothing in it for them! Hmmmm. Seems par for the course, doesn’t it? Truly sad!
Anthony Weiner, who, as New Yorkers know, is a consistently fierce and passionate advocate for his constituents. Kudos for exposing the BS that goes on in the chambers and calling the Repubs on the carpet for their hypocrisy and political games.

Another “feel good” piece of legislation that is hard to oppose. How can you not vote for benefits for 9/11 responders? Simple, the money you are voting to pay for these benefits is coming from people who make less than they do and do not have the benefits that firemen and policemen already have. It’s our money and I am mad as hell that Congress thinks it’s their money to spend.

Wow. All these comments hating on Weiner for standing up for sick 9/11 workers? It disgusts me that our politics have devolved into such filth. This should be a no brainer. Those people did a noble and selfless service for their country and deserve to have their health care covered. Period. This isn’t a political thing. Weiner is correct. It’s wether or not it’s a moral and correct thing to do. Sadly, politicians (especially Republicans) no longer care about what’s in the interest of the people. Only what they think helps them hold power. Truly sad they don’t care who will suffer and die. Only about procedure and power. Pathetic.

We need more Democrats to stand up to these incompetent bullies. We are tired of the party of NO> Weiner got tired of their BS–I’m glad to see a Democrat calling it as he sees it. Now go after those ridiculous ads that say letting a bill the Republican’s wrote and passed that gave tax relief to the very rich– will RAISE taxes when it expires. They had plenty of time while in the majority to make it permanent….why not? So they could whine about a tax “increase” later–which is an outrageous lie. It’s not an increase, the gift to their rich friends expires. The rich need to start paying up. They 15% on their investments, the middle class pay more than the richest among us. It’s unfair, and I hope Weiner explodes on them for this too. And,if the Republicans are so worried about the deficit, why didn’t they enact a war tax for their two wars? Why weren’t they worried about paying for it? Oh right, the revenue from the Iraqui oil was supposed to pay for that war. What about Afganistan? It’s doublespeak. Go get em! We’re tired of their spin.

So lets look at this without the politics. The republicans were looking for an excuse and they got one. What they wanted to add was a provision that no illegal alien received benefits from the bill. They wanted to play more of their BS politics in an election year.
Truth of the matter in my eyes? Who cares if they are/were illegal or not. On that fateful day, they stepped up. They went to the eye of the storm and busted their @sses to save peoples lives. For this they deserve no benefits? Where were the “not so honorable” Mr. King and Mr. Weiner on that day? My guess is a 4 martini lunch that we paid for? Where were you and I? Certainly not on the front line. Yet we’ll choose to pass judgement on someone who was there risking their life based solely on their citizenship?
This is nothing more of the political BS we expect from Washington and it’s sad to see how many of you have bought into it.

dk,
Since it wasn’t important whether they were legal or illegal, what’s the harm in ensuring that only US citizens benefit from something that US citizens pay for out of their taxes, generates as a result of their hard-earned incomes.
Why did the Dems decide that THIS provision was worth standing firm on, refusing to reach bipartisan agreement?
Oh yeah, because Barry is trying everything he can at the moment to go the OTHER way in granting ILLEGAL ALIENS/CRIMINALS rights reserved for REAL Americans, and the Dems just HAVE to support their party leader, and the party ideology.
So, never mind. My naive question has been answered.
I’m hard-pressed to call this the GOP’s fault, and support THEIR position over that of the reigning MORON-IN-CHIEF’s.

That was one of the worst fake rant I have ever seen. Weener set it up to fail so he could throw his silly tantrum.

More misinformation and lies from Republicans and Tea Partiers on these message/chat boards!
That bill was for the RESPONDERS of GROUND ZERO of 9/11!!! And written by both a Democrat and Republican
For 9 years that bill has been brought up over and over and over again.
For 9 years the Republican who co-wrote the bill and other Republicans have said if the bill had this or that they they would vote yes.
For 9 years the responders themselves have had respiratory illnesses due to the effects of the condition of Ground Zero of 9/11. For 9 years the responders themselves could no longer work because of the damage to their lungs due to the Conditions of Ground-Zero of 9/11. After not being able to work and loosing their jobs those responders lost their insurance.
American Firefighters and Rescuers have shown bravery, courage, and devotion to rescue operations all the time. And these Responders suffered greatly because of it.
Republicans smile in the face of the Responders of Ground Zero of 9/11 and all the time Republicans are Back Stabbers with their Blocking that bill.

That’s just unbelievable!!!! they didn’t want to pass the bill because they wanted to add an immigration and abortion amendment? I know that if I’m in a burning building and these mega buildings are collapsing around me…I know I wouldn’t give a hoot and stop and ask what country are you from???and are you pro life or pro choice????!!!!! People in this country better wake up and vote in November…especially respondents!!! It’s just the fact the Republicans said NO (AGAIN)!!! no matter who is trying to make who look bad…it’s just the fact the right wing said NO!!!

congrats to rep. weiner; he taught democrats a lesson: stop nice guy politics and hit the republicans with some of their own tactics. you’ve become an american hero. that’s what the people want to see; someone on their side. take off the silk gloves & fight off this election!

I’m really glad this got major news coverage and talk around the world. I would love to see Obama be more adamant about the immediate need to right this wrong when it comes to tragic circumstances such as these. He’s such a first class, cool and collected gentleman that is always ready to handle the most difficult of situations. But seeing some more passion in his politics wouldn’t hurt at all especially when it exposes how amoral and immoral the republican politicians are at every turn. For a group that portrayed themselves as and stood on the foundations of Evangelicals and the Moral Majority, there is very little moral in any decisions they’ve been making since 2004. Their moral concerns only appear when convenient- after they’ve first propagated lies and during election years; in other words as soon as they open their mouths. America needs strong, moral leaders like Weiner. So I hope when God finishes using Obama to make the country great again, He’ll turn right back around in 2016 and give us Weiner for our next American president. After the Bush fiasco, we can never again afford to have a republican president! He nearly destroyed this country economically. It’s taking miracles just to have the successes we’re experiencing under Obama now. How anyone in their right mind would think America would fall for another republican drain on the country is just incredible and ridiculous.

myak23 – Either you’re kidding, or you’re delusional.
Barry has all of 93 days, 3 hours, and 50 minutes to pretend that he’s the “president.”
On the morning of November 3rd, he will awaken to a NEW reality – one where he’s a LAME DUCK occupying the building, and he’ll will be lucky to be able to even get a quorum to agree to let him go to the bathroom.

It’s such mess up in Congress: without adding porks you can pass nothing. Some rules in Congress just don’t make sense, why can they just pass a single issue bill (without any amendment) with a single majority?

Few of the comments on this article/video mention the fact that (1) democrats have a solid majority in the House and thus control procedure votes; (2) democrats voted that this proposal would need 2/3 majority votes to pass and (3) this was a perfect opportunity for a tru bipartisan action in the House. The true losers are the American citizens who want to help the many first responders who have had health problems and fatal illnesses from exposure to ????? on 9/11.
This November many of these politicans will be unemployed. Tea Party members are gaining more and more support to add a plank to a political platform to limit House/Senate terms to two years. Am HOPING for CHANGE.

Anthony Weiner was EXACTLY right in what he said. I wish that more Democratic politicians had the “guts” and common sense he possesses. Kudos to you Mr. Weiner for “calling out” that hypocrite Peter King and the “Party of NO and DIVISIVENESS”. Now…if we could just get the “dumbed down electorate” to pay attention to what is going on politically beyond and below the “soundbites” – espeially of the right wing elite.

So, I suspect Mr. Weiner failed acting class? That tirade was pathetic.

It’s about time someone got angry about the obstructionists. I think more democrats should stand up for what they believe. This has been 20 months of obstruction and for a party to deny those who were volunteers at 9/11 and who are suffering with all kinds of illness pertinent to this tragedy I can’t accept or understand this. This is not about getting the president..this is a bill which will not affect the deficit but the party of No who were not fiscal specialists when they were in charge are now acting like saints who really care about the deficit. It is your party who has put this burden on your children because this deficit is what is left from the Bush tax cuts which added no jobs and did add to the deficit by 2.5 trillion and we are now having to suffer for it. Now they are trying to act like they knew nothing about it and that the party in power now is to blame. This deficit came with the recession which started in 2007 and you all refused to do anything about it. I bet if Obama wanted to give banks a break the republicans would be all over it. Talk about priorities….they have none or the little guy only the rich.

Limbaugh rants without any fact behind him, Fox Propaganda spews hate everyday but when a member of Congress tells the TRUTH, you whacko right-wing idiots have a cow. Keep using the 911 rhetoric, please, so this video gets more play and we can keep pointing out your hypocrisy. Right-on Wiener! The 911 firefighters deserve better than idiotic excuses and patriotic rhetoric, never backed up by action.

These people with the stupid and ignorant comments against Weiner are the same people who got this country in the trouble it’s in.The republicans are only in favor of enriching themselves ,the banks and corporations and the rich . They could care less about the 9/11 firefighters health or the health of the American people. Normal people with average intelligence can see that very clearly. The dummies don’t have that capacity.Weiner told the truth and the dummies can’t see it. voting against their own interest. Putting the whole country in jeopardy. A disgrace.
