NJ Gov ‘Negative’ on ‘Jersey Shore’
What does the governor of New Jersey think of hit MTV show “Jersey Shore?”
Not much, as it turns it.
Jake Tapper, host of ABC News’ This Week, asked Gov. Chris Christie what he thought of Snooki and her crew in an EXCLUSIVE interview.
Christie said MTV’s Jersey Shore is a net “Negative for New Jersey. I mean, because what it does is takes a bunch of New Yorkers — most of the people on Jersey Shore” are New Yorkers … [and] drops them at the Jersey Shore, and tries to make Americans feel like this is New Jersey.”
“I can tell people, they want to know what New Jersey really is? I welcome them to come to New Jersey anytime,” Christie told Tapper.
The governor then exhorted people to vacation in his state.
“The Jersey Shore is a beautiful place. And [it's] some place that everybody should come on vacation this summer. We’ve got another 6 weeks or so of summer left. Come to New Jersey!” he said.

Net negative? As ridiculous and repellant as the Jersey Shore cast is, the show has raised the profile of a state that long before that TV show was referred to as the “armpit of America.” Whenever I’m out of state and people bring up the “Jersey Shore” TV show, I take it as an opportunity to set them straight as to what things are really like. Considering people have tended to just dismiss the entire state as an industrial cesspool, I’ll view anything that turns attention to the state as something other than that as an opportunity. Christie has had some political success in this state (I personaly don’t agree with many of his tactics), but he’s pretty tone deaf on the state’s image.
All of that said, I’m bailing on this place the first chance I get. It’s overcrowded, expensive and noisy. There are far better places to live, much as I love this one.

I saw the interview and as a social worker and teacher I think you should work with the families we work with daily. Imagine being exposed to children and families who may or may not be innoculated. Imagine being exposed to a multitude of communicable diseases and on a very high level given the number of people civil servants are in contact with. Not to mention possible injuries.
My first four years teaching I was in and out of the hospital, the flu, strep throat, pink eye, allergies,
DO DOCTORS PAY FOR THEIR HEALTHCARE? WHAT ABOUT POLICE?
“Going after” our pensions after not paying back ten year old loans is not an answer.

Of all the things you could have covered from the interview with Christie, we get his opinion on Jersey Shore.

I don’t think Christie came across as pro teacher by telling the woman who was asking “DON’T YOU THINK WE SHOULD BE PAID FOR WHAT ADDITIONAL DEGREES WE TOOK IN ORDER TO GET AHEAD?” His sarcastic response to this teacher is “why don’t you quit teaching?” She responded because I love it. What he failed to recognize is that teachers should get paid more if they advance their degrees and had in the past. His response to her was disrespectful. Obviously she loves teaching but she did pay to advance her education and should she not be paid some extra than a teacher who does not? People with degrees in office jobs get paid more. She does have bills to pay. I think he should have said something more encouraging to her.

@pat napolitano What you fail to mention is that teacher makes about $86,000 a year. What office workers make more than that?

‘The Soprano’s’ didn’t help raise the profile of the state, but ‘Jersey Shore’ did?

Christie exceedes our hopes.

Someone said, “the show has raised the profile of a state” – you’re kidding, right? “Industrial Cesspool” and “mob burial ground” raise the profile of the state more than the repulsive cast of Jersey Shore has.
Maybe other states should drag out their dregs and have popular shows too. They could get Daisy Duke types for the south and Palin types for the west. California already has Lohan.

I’ve tried to watch this inane and ignorant show a few times. I can honestly say it portrays ALL of New Jersey in a VERY negative light. All the guys look like egotistical, moranic meatsacks and all the girls brainless, superficial tramps. Almost every person I have ever seen on the show fit these profiles. I am not naive enough to believe these are a reflection of every person in the sate… But even other “Jersey” shows that seem to be springing up do not do anything to persuade me to spend my vacation dollars on a trip to this Armpit of a state. I can bet I am not the only one who see’s it this way. Hawaii Hear I come!

Anyone who would waste their time watching this kind of vapid trap is a moron, pure and simple.

I grew up in Wildwood, NJ. Unfortunately the “Jersey Shore” is all too accurate. In the case of South Jersey all the Guidos came from Philly and as locals we hated them.

Jersey’s a great place to live. Yes, expensive. Not crowded where I live. Most people don’t get past the eastern-most counties. MTV (Moron tv) junks everything, even kids. So anyone with a brain doesn’t watch. And the housewives, I’ve only seen a few minutes, and dose accents…I don’t know anyone that has wunnadose. In our backyard it’s still the Garden State. But, Jake, what a dumb question for a governor…I agree with these folks.

Actually, yes, Jersey Shore is a more positive influence than the Sopranos or Housewives, in my experience, primarily because I quickly point out that the cast is largely NOT from Jersey. The conversation rapidly turns to thoughts on how godawful Staten Island is:)

while i in no way support this trashy television show, maybe chris christie should be more worried about what his image does for his state instead of these idiotic kids. i’d be more concerned by a moron running the state of New Jersey than a bunch of twenty-somethings running around on a beach. just saying….he might want to think twice about his idiotic comments in regards to those working in civil service professions before he goes and criticizes a bunch of reality tv stars. after all, what does christie’s image say about new jersey….it must be a state of obese morons who feel they can say whatever is on their minds without having to face repercussions. i mean, chris christie is a sore sight for eyes and can give you a headache just by hearing him gargle on about teachers and the tax issues within the state.

“What you fail to mention is that teacher makes about $86,000 a year.”
Gotta a source for that?
Because the average salary for NJ teachers is quite a bit less than that.

Ryan C:
yes, there is a source…you can google the clip, then look her up on NJ STATE employee salary website. Its public information.

What’s really ridiculous is that Christie’s interview was very informative and helpful concerning NJ and yet all abc puts on the blog is the last question regarding Jersey shore.

Matt,
When you interviewed Christie today my blood boiled. He wants teachers
to cut back…
Just looking at him on the TV I am wondering where has he cut back? How
much gas is the public paying for his limo to get to the studio? Has he
taken a cut in pay? Is he paying for his benefits? He surely does not
look like he is malnourished.
Yet!!!!!! He has the nerve to trash teachers in New Jersey. I really
would love to have him spend 1 hour trying to teach our children. My
daughter teaches in Lakewood New Jersey and at the start of the year
spends over $200 on supplies to get her students off to a good start.
She buys pencils, crayons , incentive toys and other school supplies.
Sometimes, during the year she buys coats for kids who come into school
with thin sweaters. Thanksgiving she gives her students the only
Thanksgiving meal that the students have. Yet, Christie wants to cut
her salary and her benefits. Lakewood is a very mixed town, elderly
people without children, very religious people who siphon off and
public school funds for religious schools and finally the children of
Mexican parents. WHERE IS all of the money that Christie says the
teachers wasted. There are times that our daughter works three jobs just
to pay her bills and we as retired people have to help her out.
Before Christie blows in the wind, shoots his mouth off, he should spend
a day in the shoes of the teachers…. then let us see how many inches
less his belt will be!
