Obama: Helping Small Businesses is ‘As American as Apple Pie’
From Sunlen Miller and Sharde Miller
Helping small businesses is “as American as apple pie,” President Obama said from a small business in Edison, New Jersey today where he urged Congress to pass the Small Business Jobs Act.
“Small businesses create two out of every three jobs in this country, so our recovery depends on them,” Obama said from the Tastee Sub Shop today, “if we want to keep America moving forward, we need to keep investing in our small businesses.”
The president said it’s clear that “we need to do more” to help small businesses by cutting taxes, and making more loans available through the bill.
“If this bill becomes a law, small businesses and startups will see the positive benefits right away,” the president touted, “It eliminates capital-gains taxes for key investments in small firms. It will increase the deductions that small businesses can take for new equipment and other expenses.”
The president called on Congress to pass the Small Business Jobs Act, a bill that has been stymied in the Senate for the last month.
Republicans have denounced the small business lending facility as a “mini-TARP,” trying to tap into populist outrage about the controversial $700 billion Wall Street bailout. Across the aisle, Democrats have elected to work on other bills, including the financial regulatory overhaul, unemployment benefits, and campaign finance reform. Both parties have blamed one another for the lack of action on the small business front.
Today the president noted that it’s no secret that Washington has been confronted by a lot of partisan politics during his presidency.
“We've seen a fair amount of obstruction that's had more to do with gaining political advantage than helping the country,” Obama said, “But surely Democrats and Republicans ought to be able to agree on this bill.”
The president said that he communicated to the Republican leaders who met with him at the White House yesterday that he expects this to get done before Congress goes on August vacation.
Standing beside Mr. Obama were four small business owners, one the owner of the Tastee Sub Shop in Edison – who would all see benefits from the small business aid bill.
"I hear the super sub with everything was the way to go, correct?" Obama said when ordering up one of the locally famous subs beforehand.
"I want everyone to know when I was 20 I could order a 12 inch. I'm turning 49 next week which means, just the half,” Obama said.
Locals from all over Central New Jersey lined up along Lincoln and Plainfield streets today awaiting President Barack Obama’s visit to Tastee Sub Shop. Supporters started lining up as early as 8:30am. Lines stretched down the block with supporters chanting Obama. As the motorcade drove through the intersections supporters cheered “Obama! Obama!”
Many locals took off work today in hopes of seeing the President. Valerie Black says she took off work to come here to support the President's economy initiative.
“I would love to see President Obama, I know he’s under heavy security so if I only see his car that’s fine with me, “ said Black. Black says she felt sincere positive energy amongst the crowds.
Diane Dahl allowed her young daughters to skip summer day camp today in hopes of seeing the President.
“I like that fact that he is reaching out to normal towns people. I’m glad he’s taking the initiative to speak to small business owners,” said Dahl.
Sonia Scott is currently on Medical leave from work. She’s receiving disability and says it was important for her to be here just in case she gets a chance to speak to him.
“I’m here to support him and his efforts.”

Not when the apple pie is being bought on credit.
Ask Obama to show his math on debt resolution. The current debt of 13.2 trillion dollars, if one applied credit card reform minimum payment rules, would require 520 billion dollar per year payments for some 50 years to amortize.
Now Obama hasn’ proposed to start any such payments or even to balance the budget.
So, the question is who is going to believe Obama? Certainly not me. His policy flies in the face of sound mathematics and economics.

wait a minute.. a down-home ‘Americana’ 50 year old sub shop in Edison.. ??
didn’t Joel Stein of TIME recently report that there were only Indian restaurants in Edison..?
Actually, Edison has a great diversity of a huge # of different restaurant and shops (including its landmark Indiatown in Oak Tree)…. many of which are family run. A big difference from chain-only business run cities…
Yes, ‘generational run businesses’ is as American as apple-pie. In fact, the whole world is struggling to keep its family-owned businesses against the ‘chain sharks’. Witness the world (ie. India.. ), where its generations-run small busineses are being replaced by Pizza-huts, dominoes, taco-bells…

I’m sorry Ryan.I just never equated working in a sub shop as anything but an entry level job.Obama was there to promote his small business agenda-you would think that he could come up with a better example than a fast-food place. Why a sub place and not the National Jamboree is beyond me.

As an independent retail store partner, I’m always pleased when our leader speaks about truly helping small businesses. But for many of the smallest of smallest … those with just a few employees or family run, who often lead to new successful bigger companies … need more than easier loans. We nead creativity. We can do this by using community banks, credit card sales advances (so pay-back is linked to actual sales) and other innovations. Unfortunately, the same ideas are just getting re-presented and re-packaged over and over again by the Demos. It’s time to listen when some of us who are on Main Street give ideas!

No, it’s reality. Minimum hourly wage at $7.50 works out to a gross annual paycheck of $14,500. Rewarding people’s labor with poverty speaks volumes about how much respect America’s economic and political establishment has for our country’s much hyped “work ethic”.
However, those Minimum Wage jobs do create consumer spending on basic family needs, in turn benefiting local communities. The last increase boosted spending in 2009 by an estimated $5.5 Billion.
You may recall it was a huge political battle for a hike in the Minimum Wage from $5.15. Meanwhile, by 2007, the richest 400 families in America reached an average annual income of $345 Million each, more than double their take in 2001. Why? Because their income tax rate was slashed from an average 29.4% to 16.6% according to investigative tax reporter David Cay Johnson. And, during that same era, tax cuts trickled down from the wealthy to create a measly 3 Million new jobs.

Its a mom and pop sub shop now co-owned by a guy who worked there as a teenager.
Yet again you piddle on Main Street while extolling Wall Street.
“Why a sub place and not the National Jamboree is beyond me.”
Obama should have sent the first lady like Reagan did.
At least he’s not gonna just stand them up like Bush did
“Bad weather forced President Bush to cancel a trip to the National Boy Scouts Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, an Army base in Virginia. The White House said Mr. Bush would visit the jamboree today instead. More than 300 Scouts fell ill from the heat while waiting for him, and half were treated and released from the base hospital, about three miles from the event arena.”

usually in a family run business, most of the workers are the family who make profits of the entire income, not just wages…(a few hired help).
Is this the case with this sandwhich shop?.. it probably seems so.
It is a 50 year old shop and it’s family run !! Edison has so many family run ‘generation’ businesses..

Gee Goddess, that makes sense to me.If increasing the minimum wage increased spending by 5.5 billion, imagine the purchasing power of tax cuts to the people who really spend, who can make big purchases that fund jobs and investment!

Maybe Obama doesn’t actually get it……small business in the US is defined as under 50 million dollars in sales.
A franchised Subway restaurant is hardly the kind of jobs referred to, as “small business”.
Those jobs are referred to, as a “cottage industry”. The avg. Subway restaurant has about 4 employees, at any given time.

==========
But paying a poverty wage is one of the reasons people advocate for allowing illegal immigration to continue.
And yes, the last minimum wage hike was a battle, but we’ve hardly had a chance to see it’s real benefits. It was enacted as unemployment rates went up, especially among the lower-wage workers.
Teen unemployment is at something like 25%. Lower wage workers have an unemployment rate around 30%.

Someone called this Tastee shop a ‘Subway’. someone needs to make a distinction between family run franchise business (which is a chain franchise) and a ‘unique’ family run business.
This Tastee sub-shop is not a franchise (not putting down franchises- they too are family run and have their struggles). But a non-franchise struggles from non-recognition- and often has worse struggle to survive. But if it thrives, it brings a landmark unique factor to its place:
A unique business is the mindset and thought of the owner’s conception alone. Yes, Edison has a lot of UNIQUE family run busineses (restaurants, shops, services, etc.).
the world might slowly turn to cloned chains of Wal-marts, Pizza Huts, Domiones, subways… and while those places are great, the problem is it is going to make every city a clone and stifle any creative businesses. We need unique family-run businesses as a landmark, which Edison still has…

There was an interesting chart on t.v. last night..under the Bush policies big business percent of profits increased 351% over the last few years. The average person’s income increased 18% If they are kept..our deficit will increase2.5 trillion dollars more without anyghing else. They were incentives that were not paid for and are some of the reason our deficit is so high. what more do you need to know?

I had a friend who years ago was asked how he liked the newly enacted minimum wage. His response was classic, “See that trencher over there digging that ditch, if it were not for that **** minimum wage I would have a crew over there digging that ditch”.
Minimum wage only works for a little while, then prices rise as the cost for those goods and services rise due to the minimum wage. When that happens the worker is right where he started and the cycle must repeat itself. In economic circles this is referred to as inflation,
The same is true of union wage increases except when strikes are required often the duped union member does nor recover his lost wages in his lifetime. The result of union negotiations is that jobs move to China, India and Korea.
Meanwhile we have an ever-growing national debt that today if we applied credit card minimum payment rules of 4% of the balance would require some 50 years of 520 billion dollar payments to amortize. However, instead of balancing the budget and starting payments the Obama/Pelosi/Reid triad are marching us toward doubling and tripling the debt. No amount of economic boom can mitigate such a debt. The nonpartisan CBO projects that interest payments alone which are mandated by law will be 900 billion dollars pr year by 2020.
So Obama fans, what is the answer to our dilemma? Or is there any answer?

One reason small busineses are having so much trouble, besides the regulations, taxes, lawsuits, and bailouts for big guys are as follows:
Small Business=America (as Obama said)
Obama has animus towards America (as Obama has proven)

Posted by: Nephron | Jul 28, 2010 5:46:22 PM posted “imagine the purchasing power of tax cuts.” We don’t need to “imagine” – just look back at the Bush era.
People at the lower end of the pay scale spend immediately while those at the upper-end do not. Otherwise, over the past 8 years of massive tax cuts, when “people who really spend” made “big purchases” it should have created more than 3 Million new jobs in 8 years.
Posted by: green.goddess | July 28, 2010, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm
the answer is always prosperity, pie should get bigger. Shopping and supporting family owned businesses will help…
If businesses thrive, they WANT to pay their workers more than minimum wage. This is especially true of family owned businesses, where the workers often become ‘part of the family’. The decent businesses with heart always try to pay the max to their workers… but they pay what they can.
all over the world, the same story now: small fish is fearing the big shark chains… ((in India, some small businesses are generation owned for many centuries, so the big sharks coming in is esp hurtful)).

Politico: “Giant life-insurance companies have figured out a way to hold onto death benefits owed to bereaved families, including parents and spouses of U.S. soldiers killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a six-month investigation appearing in the September issue of Bloomberg Markets magazine.
“MetLife and Prudential lead the way in making hundreds of millions of dollars in secret profits every year on money that belongs to relatives of those who die,” a Bloomberg news release says.
“Survivors of service men and women are told they’ll get a $400,000 life insurance payout. They don’t. Instead, Prudential keeps their money. Families are surprised when they receive what looks like a checkbook. Prudential promises to hold the money in safekeeping for as long as families would like, saying it will pay them 0.5 percent interest.
Bloomberg continues: “What Prudential doesn’t say is that it’s keeping survivors’ money in Prudential’s corporate investment account. … Nor are families told that they could earn more than twice as much interest by opening FDIC-insured money market accounts at banks across the country.”
Yay for the right wing free market…..completely devoid of morals or responsibility.

From the report ““Recommendations: Follow-up colorectal cancer screening is recommended in 5 years for routine colon cancer screening. Continue smoking cessation efforts, a daily exercise program, healthy diet, moderation in alcohol intake, periodic dental care, and remain up-to-date with recommended immunizations. Continue modified exercise regimen, and lower extremity muscle strengthening program, for occasional left patella-femoral pain secondary to chronic tendonitis. we need to keep investing in our small businesses.-> Part of it is also supporting and patronizing small businesses.
New Jersey is enriched with so much small businesses in its Jersey Shores, to is power-house diverse ethnic places.
We go to Edison all the time (drive an hour)… it has some of the best diveristy of Indian authentic food in the U.S. Why is this.. sheer competition of so many in Indiatown makes each owner try to win its customers (( over Manhatten and California biggies who take their customers for granted)). Most of the owners remember each of their customer and take great care (even changing their menu and tastes for its regulars). You do not get this in a chain-places.
Another landmark in Vineland, New Jersey- Delsea Drive in movie theater: family owned -one of the best in the U.S. pure retro. The owner himself talks to his customers and asks what movies they want to see, etc.
A small family owner of a good business REMEMBERS and APPRECIATES their customers and workers overall. Supporting them is supporting your community, in addition to providing you a unique charming time.

Each day anti-business legislation and policy come pouring out of Washington. No businesses are hiring as no one knows how these massive unthoughout thousands of pages of conflicting legislation will effect any of us in the immediate future.
I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. And yet, each day, Obama stands up there and proclaims that he is doing exactly what he isn’t doing, helping American business.
Obama landed in Holland, Michigan Thursday before last, insulted its congressman, handed American stimulus dollars to a Korean corporation, and proclaimed Obamanomics a success even as Michigan has lost 94,000 jobs since his Recovery Act was enacted. Obama said his benevolence would create 300 jobs in Holland – but that’s $500,000 per job.
And, “The Great Obamanomic Job Creation Machine” also rumbled into action over the Fourth of July weekend, promising to spend as much as $2 billion to support creation of 1,585 “permanent” jobs by two solar energy companies. That comes to a potential cost of over $1.25 million per job.
Then there’s the two billion (also of our money) that he gave to the Dutch company who is busily developing a new green car with a price tag of $90,000 each, just a drop in the bucket for all of the multi-millionaires on Capital Hill. In fact, Al Gore is poised to become the first eco-billionaire with his cap and trade scam.
In his weekly radio address on July 3, President Obama chided the Republicans for failing to climb aboard his job-creation bandwagon, which he claims—against strong evidence to the contrary—has created or saved 2.8 million jobs over the past year.”
Obama/Pelosi/Reid, a three headed economic train wreck.

It’s not just anti-business policies.
It is also the policies of the corporate-shark mentality (big bucks chains).
in our town, a Walmart opens and yes, just this year, the last of the businesses across the street close. why is this? WALMART HAS SO MUCH $$$ TO TAKE OVER WHATEVER IT WANTS.. . They are clever,, they research their competitors and DRIVE THEM OUT.
the answer is consumers and consumers alone who should make the decision and support their local shops. Edison is a fine example of that happening.. (yes, it has its big malls.. but its small businesses are where its treasures are).

Republicans are so good at voting Hell No, blocking measures that help fix the economy, bring back jobs, and help small businesses create jobs.
Yep, for over a month the Republicans did it again by blocking a measure that would help small businesses create jobs, reducing the unemployment.
Republican’s only purpose in Washington is to keep the status quo, maintain the high unemployment, and trying to block any measure that would guarantee to be good for the economy and the middle class.
After all it was Republicans who rewarded corporations that OUTSOURCED American jobs overseas,
Posted by: job.outsourced | July 28, 2010, 10:31 pm 10:31 pm
about outsourcing, it has its plus or minus globally. technology is closing the boundaries, and whether ppl like it or not, Western companies are going all over the world… and Eastern companies are likewise.
take a business that has 100 employees. if they outsource certain areas that are too expensive to hire extra locally and keep their clients, they stay in business and keep the 100 employed here. if they don’t outsource and lose the clients, the company goes down due to lack of profits from their client. those 100 employees are out of luck then.
outsourcing is still seen by most companies not as total replacement but efficiency in certain areas to supplement their business. if there are laws to ensure that outsourcing does not hurt or remove the current employees– and it is used to help the business grow locally, then it has its advantages too. used wrongly, yes, it is harmful.. that’s why it has to be monitored carefully.

Edison NJ should deserve credit for its amazing balance of having a very small town feel with uniquely owned family businesses , and yet being a focal city-type revenue center.
San Francisco is a very diverse town, and it proudly boasts large landmark Chinatown and its diverse heritage as its key features.
Edison, NJ on the other hand, never lists its tinier landmark and underrated Indiatown, and its diversity is overlooked. Oak Tree buzzes with so much activity, driving on this road– it’s a hubbub center, lively and filled with small businesses. The places are filled till late into the night..
The entire town in fact, has more diverse shops and places of all ethnicities.

Alas, the apple pie is an European invention (English/Netherlands): 14th century English meat pies;; fruits (i.e apples) were substituted in traditional meat pies for dessert.

Rolling back the bush tax cuts is the only way to breath some life back into the economy. Most folks making 250,000 are small business owners who file as individuals. All the talk of “taxing the rich” is just another liberal talking point…what Obama is really doing is soaking small business owners and as a result…they are unable to thrive and hire. The Health care mess of a bill, the new taxes rolling in next year….the estate taxes, cap and trade….ALL SMALL BUSINESS KILLERS…
So, Obama say helping small businesses is as AMERICAN as Apple Pie. Har.
So…that would make his policies Anti American.
Just like him.

Obama say helping small businesses is as AMERICAN as Apple Pie. ->> well.. everything American first relied on the Native-American land. It is a land of immigrants. So yes, Mr. Obama is right using the term ‘apple pie’. why not??
Even Thomas Edison relied on an immigrant (Tesla) to ‘help’ with the invention usage of electricity…

Obama: Helping Small Businesses is ‘As American as Apple Pie’
Apparently for NoBo it isn’t as easy as Apple Pie.
Here we are going into August more than a year and a half into Bama Time and there’s no recovery yet.
(sigh)
NEWS FLASH for Barry – Small Businesses don’t need loans from the federal government. If they need loans they should go get them from something I like to call Banks. I’m unconvinced that there are many small businesses who want to increase their debt load right now.
Please go back to the oval office and come up with better ideas.

Mjishernameo, where did you hear this? Curious…are you a small business owner? I am. And “most folks” who can blithely strip a quarter million out of their business are not likely “small” business owners.
Otherwise, owners filing as individuals, use tax advice. Small business owners who want to avoid personal taxes have options such as re-structuring their companies as an LLC or C corporation.
Many of us compensate ourselves with tax deductible perks such as a company car. Others fold profits into tax deductible business purchases such as development or equipment.
And all that “thrive and hire”? I hire based on DEMAND, not worry over health care, new taxes, cap and trade or estate taxes.
This whole idea of “small business killers” is just another conservative myth.

Helping multinational goliaths is as American as apple Pie a la Mode.

Standing beside Mr. Obama were four small business owners, one the owner of the Tastee Sub Shop in Edison – who would all see benefits from the small business aid bill.
========
I am not kidding. Do a search for a photo of this event. They set up a Presidential Podium at the sandwich shop for him to stand behind.

” who would all see benefits from the small business aid bill. ”
Why would the Tastee Sub Shop in Edison need or want any Federal Government help? Unless the government is handing out free money I don’t see the connection here.

I guess imposing a new crushing regulatory and IRS paperwork burden on small businesses is “American” as well.

94% of the house republicans voted against the small business aid bill.

“94% of the house republicans voted against the small business aid bill. ” – Flash Override
Not bad but anything less than 97% is unacceptable.
Someone tell me why we need the federal government to offer loans to small businesses once again. What happened to the banking industry that just got fixed?

Mr. Obama couldn’t manage a business of any size… The dirty secret is that Mr. Obama has no management experience of any kind… He has always been the beneficiary of other peoples’ money… if left to his own devices… he would starve…

Follow me. Obama has taken the best approach to capital to support small businesses in the U.S. Although he has no managerial experience of any kind. Conversely, he loves Americans because of the way of economic development consistent that he has brought to them. Maybe, he has always been enjoying other people’s … if left to their own devices … he will die. But he know how didn’t to turn it into his own tools
