Refudiate This: Sarah Palin Goes Shakespearean

ABC News’ Huma Khan reports: Is Sarah Palin following in the footsteps of William Shakespeare? The former Alaska governor took to Twitter this weekend to oppose the construction of an Islamic Center near Ground Zero. In doing so, she coined a new word that’s already made its way to urbandictionary.com. "Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn't it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate.” The tweet was deleted within hours, and a new post took out any reference to “refudiate” – seemingly a mix of the words refute and repudiate. “Peaceful New Yorkers, pls refute the Ground Zero mosque plan if you believe catastrophic pain caused @ Twin Towers site is too raw, too real,” Palin wrote. Within the hour, she tweeted again: “Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing.” The initial posting, however, didn’t go unnoticed, forcing Palin to offer this clarification: “‘Refudiate,’ ‘misunderestimate,’ ‘wee-wee'd up.’ English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!” President Bush coined the term “misunderestimate” when he said in 2000 that his opponents “misunderestimated me.” President Obama last year referred to people in Washington getting “all wee-wee’d up,” a term that Press Secretary Robert Gibbs later had to explain: "I think ‘wee-wee’d up’ is when people just get all nervous for no particular reason. … an August pundit pattern.” Whether this was Palin's first use of the term "refudiate" is disputable. Urbandictionary.com points out that the former Alaska governor used it last week on Fox News’ Hannity, when she asked President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to “refudiate” the NAACP’s claims that the tea party has racist elements. But Fox News’ transcript has Palin saying “repudiate.” — Huma Khan

Palin & Shakespeare in the same sentence? I don’t think so.

When Obama said “wee -wee’d up” he meant to. When Palin says “refudiate’ she’s not joking, she’s doing the best she can.

AT least she did not use a foul word like Joe Biden did.

Posted by: stormerF2 | July 19, 2010, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

If she used it on a Fox news show, it wasn’t a typo. She honestly believed it was a cromulant word. (Cromulant being a word made up by the Fox show “The Simpsons.”)

Posted by: Lee | July 19, 2010, 2:20 pm 2:20 pm

Methinks there is method in her madness. When Obama used “wee-wee’d up,” it was clearly a euphemism for p***** off. When George W. Bush used “misunderestimate,” it was because he didn’t have a grasp of the English language. Yet Bush won two elections. Obama, an articulate Constitutional lawyer and professor, is despised. Which linguistic style would you imitate if you were in her boots?

If you listen to the Hannity interview, she does indeed say “refudiate” — but I think it musta been some intellectual liberal who corrected it for the transcript. You intellectual elitists are destroying America, tryna be so CORRECT all the time!! ;)

Sarah Palin is a joke, an absolute joke, but she’s good looking and she shouts bumper sticker slogans that are written for her. Her brain doesn’t move that fast or think that deep.
I think America deserves Sarah Palin as president — really! Maybe with all her wisdom and insight she’ll be able to turn this country around, and around, and around, … stop spinning. I want to get off the ride!

Posted by: catsalleygirl | July 19, 2010, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

Not really a new word, but a misspelling on an existing word. I’ll be honest I had to look it up, and I found that she meant Repudiate. This is something I think a lot of us have had happen to us, we mispronounce a word based on where we live and we go thinking that word means what it means. A odd ball example would be someone saying I like to drink wooder. That doesn’t mean wooder is a new word meaning water, it means that they were prouncing it incorrectly and passing it into their text. I don’t fault her for the misspelling, happens to me from time to time.

Posted by: Justthinking | July 19, 2010, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm

I think that the comments section of an article is the last place you’d expect to find indignation about the grammar or spelling of others. I was an English major and am horrified my own misuse of the language in emails. I think Sarah Palin probably learned a new word today. And we all get to feel superior for a few minutes. Big whoop.

Posted by: jackdaws | July 19, 2010, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm

How come you lefties didn’t harass Obama when he said he had been to all “57 states”, or when he didn’t know what the financial term “P/E” meant, or when he said “corpsmen” wrong three times in a row.(should be pronounced “core” “Men”, not like a dead corpse).Or when he said passing healthcare reform by “nuclear option” would make things un-governable? As well as the lists of dumb, contradictions he’s made?
I’m not saying she’s a genius, but every one that read that knows she mis-spoke, substituting the “p” for and “f”.

I think it’s funny that Palin did something we all do. It’s not unusual when we speak to combine two words when we’re thinking of two words at the same time. But, the difference between us and Palin is we feel bad when we do it. Palin tries to take her mistake and spin herself into one of the greatest writers in history. I’m wondering: Did Shakespeare use his hands for notes?

First and foremost, refudiate or repudiate isn’t really a word that would be relevant to the circumstances. If Sarah doesn’t want the Mosque built I believe she should condemn the building of the Mosque. Repudiating would only refuse to acknowledge, reject the idea, or disown it, wouldn’t really be a good argument for stopping it. And if she’s going to try to persuade or make a point, try spell check…What a ditz.

Nimron (noun. plural: nimrons) – a very slow witted person even when compared to other morons.

Personal Destruction on any of THIS WEAK GUY’S POTENTIAL OPPONENTS …
Terrible world today.

I am not saying Sarah Palin is genius but I DO BELIEVE SHE IS THICK SKIN AND STRONGER THAN THE N’obama-n.

Go Sarah.

You are missing the point. To quote a proverb, “You strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.” The point is the mosque. To build a mosque on the site would be a horrible blunder in the extreme. There are ways to build unity, but this is not one. Sarah Palin appealed to Muslims to show some understanding. Period.

Posted by: Sherry Innes | July 20, 2010, 3:25 am 3:25 am

Unbelievable! To think that anybody could take Sarah Palin seriously when she doesn’t even know how to use the English language is beyond me. Refudiate indeed!
Regarding her comment about the Islamic Community Center & Mosque being built near Ground Zero, wasn’t this country founded on freedom of religion?? Islamic people are NOT the only people capable of terrorism. What about Timothy McVeigh? He was a home grown American and look what he did in his terror attack in Oklahoma City. In my opinion, the people who want to build the Islamic Community Center & Mosque have as much right to do it as the Catholic Church might have. History tells us what they have done in the name of their religion. Any religious or secular group is capable of terrorism. Why single out the Islamic people? I think that this center could do a lot toward bringing people together if only folks would open their minds.

You people focus on her and not the mosque. This is the issue and it is clear that the muslims are putting it there for one reason – as a slap in the face to 9/11. Islam is an ideology a mix of religion, law, and life. It is designed to take over and it will if we let it.

After dissecting every word Sarah has said for the last 2 plus years, this is all you have? Wow, you people need to step down from your podiums and quit looking down your elitist noses. We get it ABC you HATE her. Let it go.

Most of these posts come from the biggest supporters of the commercially touted Ebonics sales boom.
Wasn’t President Obama the same one on national TV who pronouced “Corpsman” as Corpse-man? And the very same who quoted that it was “Hardworking immigrant-Americans who raised the money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty?
Refudiate that, would ya?

Posted by: Lee | July 20, 2010, 7:55 am 7:55 am

Your joking right? She wasn’t writing for ABC. If so she would misrepresent the issue like ABC does. Sarah represents everything that is Good and right in America. That is why you all hate her so. I love you Sarah! Palin for President!!

Refudiate isn’t an English word. Take away the “f” and replace it with a “P”
The get a job washing cars, not writing headlines.

I suspect Shakespere had a better grasp on the English language than Sarah Palin as well as a better grasp on the foolishness of politics.

Posted by: Wayne | July 20, 2010, 8:30 am 8:30 am

I don’t recall Good Morning America commenting on Pres. Obama stating the word “corpse” instead of the correct way of saying it (core). Your bias is sickening.

Way to go, Henry! “The get a job…”? Add an “n” why dontcha!

Take this as constructive criticism, but the mere fact that you are relating the brillance of Shakespeare to Sarah Palin calls into question your journalistic credentials.
What is happening to the reporter/newscaster/journalist profession? They have gone from respected and trusted source for info to gossip, rumour creating, politically motivated, propaganda cultivating talking heads.

Yeah, let’s build a Mosque at ground zero in New York. Right after we build a Japanese shrine next to the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor

Justthinkin, you are right in that many people mispronounce words all of the time, but they are not trying to run for this country’s VP, or anything else for that matter. Maxwell, Obama was elected president, so your comment is moot. Those who do “despise” him, did so at at first glance, way before he was ever elected. And thank God those people don’t count.

Posted by: Not the point | July 20, 2010, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm

I’m sure all of you spell perfectly 100% of the time and never make an error. For example, I -never- find a spelling or grammatical error on ABCNews.com. No. Never. Well, maybe when I read it there are a few, but that’s it.

Posted by: LibertarianinMA | July 20, 2010, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

If Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin to name three Shakespearean plays, just three, I “betcha” a blank stare would come across Palin’s face. Palin compared to Shakespeare?….”Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

Posted by: A.Lincoln | July 20, 2010, 2:29 pm 2:29 pm

Using a combo-word is better than calling a soldier a “corpesman” like Obama did, or using language that belongs in the gutter…like Biden and Rahm

why not use an existing word instead of refudiate (non existing)!!!

Does anyone out there remember what happened the last time we elected a President who couldn’t speak or think in english?

Posted by: morgan | July 20, 2010, 5:50 pm 5:50 pm

I will announce my intent to run for Vice president in 2012 as soon as I clear up this matter of my being caught “refudiating” in the adult book store that I can see from my house. Thanks–Pee-Wee==OUT==

Re;stanflint–look back and see what she made the comment regarding==The rejection of the wishes of muslims in New York to erect a mosque at least in part to bring healing in light of the 9/11 attacks–and this is NOT a promotion of hate and intolerence?(P.S. I am a WASP who lives just outside of NYC and works in the city)–billieb = OUT =

Where else can you find the likes of Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, having so a many fans ranging from mama grizzlies to papa elephants, who also happen make a great deal of money with sheer stupidity – only in the USA!

Posted by: jones | July 20, 2010, 8:22 pm 8:22 pm

If I took the time to take potshots at every time ABC News misused a word or had a careless typographical error, I’d be busy for the rest of my life and beyond! I suggest you look for real news. And perhaps you might consider taking a course in English grammar yourself.

Posted by: Ladonna Lindley | July 20, 2010, 9:09 pm 9:09 pm

And a course in journalism instead of your efforts to promote the lives of your chosen celebrities might be useful too. I certainly would prefer that the news media not be owned by the entertainment industry. It should be illegal.

Sarah is George Bush lite, as is light in the behind. I hope she gets elected as president. It would be a fun time and she can pick Rand Paul as her VP. Now that would be lots of fun.

Posted by: mike | July 20, 2010, 11:47 pm 11:47 pm

If she didn’t have so much influence on sheeple it would be funny.
The movie “Being There” where Peter Sellers plays a mentally-challenged character who’s in the right place at the right time and is mistaken for a genius comes to mind.

Posted by: The_Mick | July 21, 2010, 10:51 am 10:51 am

“Palin is on the American side of the issue… the hate is coming from the left.” What does that even mean!?!?!?! American side of the issue? What is the un-American side? The “hate” you refer to is no different than the “hate” the conservatives have for Obama.

Posted by: Jim | July 21, 2010, 11:47 am 11:47 am

RIGHT ON, THE MICK!! But did you hear that Rush Limbaugh recently sold his 4500sq ft condo for 11.6 million.WOW, thats a lot of money, you say, for 4500sq ft. But it did have a view, albeit very narrow view, one that overlooks All of the shortcomings of the Republican Party!!!(sound like anyone youv’e ever encountered?)

America, generally does not speak good english, Their grammar i mixed up. I am therefeore not surprised to see such an error from her. However for someone championing the cause of bashing the president you dont just drop your guard

Posted by: Awispi | July 22, 2010, 4:14 am 4:14 am

With everything going on in America right now, this is the ONLY thing you could report on? How petty are you and all the others who hang on Sarah Palin’s every word, just waiting for her to screw up so that you can throw it in her face. I’m not a Palin supporter by any means…but for Christ’s sake. Grow up and report something that actually matters!
