Stimulus ‘Would Have Been Bigger’ but for GOP
Was the $862 billion stimulus too small? It probably would have been bigger, Vice President Joe Biden said, if it weren’t for Republican opposition in early 2009.
In an EXCLUSIVE interview on "This Week," host Jake Tapper asked Biden whether, in retrospect, the stimulus was too small given the dismal jobs situation in the country.
“There's a lot of people at the time argued it was too small,” he said. “A lot of people in our administration…even some Republican economists and some Nobel laureates like Paul Krugman, who continues to argue it was too small.”
“But, you know,” Biden told Tapper, “there was a reality. In order to get what we got passed, we had to find Republican votes. And we found three. And we finally got it passed,” Biden said.
But if it wasn’t for the legislative reality, Biden explained, “I think it would have been bigger. I think it would have been bigger. In fact, what we offered was slightly bigger than that. But the truth of the matter is that the recovery package, everybody's talking about it [like] it's over. The truth is now, we're spending more now this summer than we — I'm calling this…the summer of recovery,” the Vice President said.

The Obama administrations own estimates were that it would take a 1.2 Trillion dollar investment to put us on the path to economic recovery. Instead, Obama proposed 550-850 Billion. That was enough to rescue the system, but not enough to rescue the economy.

But is bigger better? No! They haven’t even spent it all after all this time so why did they need more? What a joke. It should have been spent to create jobs not for political favors. There’s no “change” in this administration just more of the same. Just look at the Medicaid fraud that was uncovered. Billions of dollars being bilked from us taxpayers. If they would have spent even 500 million on enforcement of laws on the books we would have created jobs AND saved more than paid for themselves.

So what Bite Me is saying is we should be thanking Snowe, Collins, and then-GOP Senator S.P.E.C.T.R.E. for saving us from p-ssing away another trillion dollars?
Please, please let this be the Dems strategery for 2010 and 2012. It was the GOP’s fault despite the fact that we controlled everything with filibuster-proof majorities. They’ll be out of power for a generation with such a condescending message.

Biden is a liar. Pres. Obama specifically said the stimulus should be in the $800 billion range to keep unemployment from going over 8%, and it ended up being $862 billion. I gues they are both liars.

As an independent living in Silicon Valley, I see nothing from where I sit where Republicans or Conservatives have an ounce of credibility towards dealing with the massive unemployment factors, and the down and out economy. Shame on big business for hoarding their cash. I guess they will pursue large dividend payments to their rich shareholders. Taxing the rich at this point even further makes sense as it might stimulate big business to invest in jobs rather than distributions. Small business relates 2 out of every 3 jobs, with that level of job potential it is small business that leads the way. Tax the rich to prevent distributions forcing big corporations to internally invest and hire workers. Redistribute that tax to small business so that pressure on big business is real and palpable in taking talent away from the big business pool. It is a cycle to repeat over and over again so the West meets the East’s progress. Like in WW1 and WW2 we are too stupid to realize the real war is West to East not internally in the West. We keep this fool hardy tact up and we will soon be speaking Mandarin. It is high time we all get on the same page here or our children will be learning about America as a footnote.

And again it is an argument. Face it all you people who hate Obama and love Bush, you had 8 years to get it right and all you did was get it all wrong. Like I just said, it is time for all of us to get on the same page but no we are stupid and petty and all we do is argue. What a waste of American talent and what a waste of time. I will make sure that I vote Democrat because the other side dooms us to the dark ages again.

Thank god its not bigger. We have wasted hundreds of billions of dollars. For instance in my town, stumulus money is being used to build a new fence around the airport where the old fence looks entirely in good shape.
the money would be better spent on replacing some old brides on roads and improving the interstates.

Posted by: Dontget818 | July 18, 2010, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm
VP Biden said a major achievement of stimulus spending is on highway construction and high speed rails. The government tried to impress people by spending a lot of money to make signs on the work sites. The fact is that most of this construction is minor road and bridge repair, such as road pavement. These works could be carried out with state own funding using local tax. I am not aware of any high speed rail completed under stimulus money. Major highway construction are such as a new bridge across major rivers, and replacement of city major road like BQE or new subway in New York city, which requires big money to complete and has never been done with government money.

Obama focused on the $787 billion stimulus plan, an ambitious package of federal spending and tax cuts designed to revive the economy and save millions of jobs. Most wage-earners will soon see the first paycheck evidence of tax breaks that will total $400 for individuals and $800 for couples.

The fact is Bush had stimulus spending twice with much smaller money, each time he sent each taxpayer equal amount of money, i.e. five hundred dollars. There is no complain of corruption there.
The conservatives have praised Bill Clinton more for his effort to achieve budget surplus. but Clinton should be blamed for letting his several cabinet members(i.e. Rubin, Summers and Cisneros) relaxed the fed. regulations for preventing financial disasters eight years later. Bush’s mistake on housing meltdown is : he advocated each American should own a house.

That happened under Obama and you should thank him. Here is the tax advice, cut corporate taxes to 25%, and raise the tax base on thee wealthiest Americans to 75%. We throw ourselves back to the 1960′s with taxes and we have our recovery in full gear. Most economists told Obama that the stimulus needed to be larger because of the depth of the recession. However, he and others knew they would not get it. As it was, only three reps. signed on…otheres sneered and did not care that steps were being taken to hold off a catastrophe. It did stop the bleeding but there was more needed. Now, they are saying it failed….no they failed to support what was necessary to stop this recession. They also failed in recognizing when they were in charge what was happening. The bad stuff started in 2007 and not one rep. addressed the situation. Finally in the last few months Bush asked for some support. Obama and Mc Cain did not want to do this but they gave in to support our president. Unlike the republicans who refuse to support Obama at any cost. Obama has reached out to them many times but as Hannity said…they will never work with him. How is that for getting things done?

Plus, they are liars. They desperately want Americans to believe Democrats nearly tripled the deficit, and many lazy citizens are buying their lies, unfortunately.Wwhen Bush and Cheney left office the deficit was about $1/3 trillion. Most estimates suggest the deficit at the end of this year will be about $1.4 trillion. Going from $1.3 trillion to $1.4 trillion isn’t an especially significant increase given the size of the economy and the budget– and let’s face it, Republicans have never cared about the deficit prior to now. What is most aggravating tabout Republicans is that The single biggest factors driving the deficit are Bush-Cheney policies that Republican leaders (and born again deficit peacocks) supported, and still support! (Tax fairy anyone? Their invincible ignorance is actually dangerous.)

It looks like the 1.3 trillion Bushie figure must be total deficit accrued from 2000 – 2008. Bush’s last year deficit number was around 450 Billion dollars. The 1.4 trillion mentioned for this year is a spin number to sound less than it is. This year’s deficit spending is projected to be around 1.8 trillion dollars.

Really? Is that what it looks like to you? Intriguing.
Let’s clarify, and see if it still looks like that to you. At the end of calendar year 2000, just before Bush took office, the debt stood at $5.629 trillion. He nearly doubled it. Just before Obama took office the federal debt stood at $9.986 trillion(source: historical tables published by the Office of Management and Budget.

The stimulus would have been bigger but for the GOP? In 2009 the Congress and White House had an absolute LOCK on passing ANY legislation they wanted. Instead, giddy with the potential of having a one-party government, the party in power twiddled their thumbs with partisan stem-cell, legislation for three months, came up with lame-@$$ NON-stimulus programs like Cash for Clunkers, and ignored the public’s demand to concentrate on the economy and unemployment to pass a defective 2000-page health care refinance bill that no one wanted and that the Democrats will make sure no one will ever repeal or even fix the deficiencies they acknowledge are in it. They had their chance, they blew it, and trying once again to blame the GOP for their incompetence is just more grounds to vote them out in November.

Bachmann is a bit smarter than Biden. She knows the National Debt is fast approaching the point of being unresolvable, if not already there.
The interest payment for 2010 is 164 billion dollars, what could be done with that amount of money if not wasted serving a debt.
If we started payment of P&I it would take 100 years of 320 billion dollar payments per year. If we wait until 2102 the payments will rise to 380 billion. But . . . if we wait until 2020 it’s too late the interest payments alone would be 900 bilion dollars. Obama fans take note, that is .9 trillion dollars.
So it seems the democrats are betting the solvency of our nation for the vote of the unemployed. What will they do when the six months are over and there are still no jobs? The census takers will be back on the unemployment rolls then as well.
Blame whomever you wish, but this Manchurian President has us on a spending path that only someone of a Cloward-Piven mind-set could see any merit in.

Quite a bit of the stimulus went to companies overseas rather then to the US, that wasn’t the GOP.
The climate of uncertainty in the US because of attacks on business and threats of increased taxes in the form of health care, cap & trade, social security, etc. certainly had a detrimental affect as well.
To say nothing of the constant fear mongering, economy must have health care reform to survive, US must do cap & trade for world to survive.
I realize the whole political idea of never let a crisis go to waste, but you create to many crises, people get post-traumatic stress disorder.
There is more then that, but it wasn’t the GOP.
