Amb. Richard Holbrooke on Pakistan: ‘Worst Floods Imaginable’
Ambassador Richard Holbrooke painted an ugly picture of the devastation from the floods in Pakistan that have left 4 million people homeless.
The special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan said they are "the worst floods imaginable," affecting 20 million people, submerging an area the size of Italy and ruining much of the county’s infrastructure.
"We don’t know how many hundreds of miles of roads have been destroyed, we know that hundreds and hundreds of bridges have been wiped out,” Holbrooke told me on "GMA." "All of last year’s reconstruction efforts have been wiped out."
The ambassador said the U.S. has been "first with the most" aid to the country – and said it could help give America’s unpopular image a makeover in Pakistan. The U.S. has pledged $90 million in aid and Secretary Clinton is expected to announce additional aid at the United Nations today.
But the crisis in Pakistan is more than humanitarian– it could also impact our national security.
“We are not oblivious to the political and security implications of this,” Holbrooke said.
“Pakistan is not just another country that has been hammered by a tragedy, it is at the epicenter of global terrorism,” he said.
ABC News has reported on a charity arm of an Islamic extremist group that is operating a relief camp in Pakistan. Holbrooke said that the opportunity for militant groups to take advantage of the crisis and build support is an issue they are “concerned” about — but not what they are concentrating on.
“Right now we’re focused solely on the emergency rescue and relief mission…My greatest concern governmentally, George, is that local governments have been put underwater as well. But I stress again, America is leading the effort and every individual American can do something on their own,” he said.

Obama: 'Now Is the Time For Common Sense Action'
Romney Takes Aim at Conservatives
Where are the rich Muslim oil states? The middle east takes in hundreds of billions each month in oil income, why are they not saving their brothers?
How does it fall on the US to free a people, set up government, bail out their natural disasters and still buy oil from their cousins screaming about how evil we are.
It is time for some change we can believe in.

One of the most hideous things that I have viewed on TV recently was that this morning Good Morning America was interviewing a man about the flooding in Pakistan and he was telling George and the American public how to make donations to help them………….
Not ONE minute after that segment was over, they went toTennessee where they also have had horrific flooding and loss, but yet….NOBODY gave the American public a number in which to help them……………..Pakistan is our friend?……………The United States has had a rash of flooding in various parts of the country and those in the wake of Katrina are still in need of assistance and that was FIVE years ago………………Why do goody two shoes only help foreign countries, but can’t seem to muster up a few bucks for their own country?……………
Hideous injustice to our own people who we actually live with.

We are Americans. We are able to see beyond race, creed and nationality, that’s the dream and is what makes us the great nation we are. Deny this and we become so much less. We become what you are complaining about.

this is an opportunity for America to actually do some good with the billions often wasted by our aide programs. If we do not help out rest assured the Islamics, especially the radical ones, will. And more of Pakistan will be radicalized. Pakistan is in danger of becoming a failed state with Islamic folks running crazy or a military dictatorship if we aren’t careful. Obama, here is a chance to help out your fellow Muslims that is valid for both humanitarian and security reasons! Forget the 911 Mosque and help out where really needed!
