Deficit Commission Co-Chair Apologizes for Calling Social Security ‘A Milk Cow with 310 Million T*ts’; Feminist Groups Call for His Ouster
Former Sen. Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., the GOP co-chair of the president’s deficit commission, apologized today for sending an email to a female activist for seniors in which he described Social Security as “a milk cow with 310 million t*ts.”
“Over the last 40 years, I have had my size 15 feet in my mouth a time or two,” Simpson wrote in a letter to the activist, Ashley Carson, on the official stationery of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. (You can read his letter HERE.) “To quote my old friend and colleague, Senator Lloyd Bentsen, when I make a mistake, ‘It’s a doozy!’”
The White House said it didn’t play a role in Mr. Simpson’s mea culpa. “He was a senator and been around politics long enough to come to the realization on his own,” one senior White House official told ABC News.
Carson, the executive director of the National Older Woman’s League (OWL), told ABC News, “I appreciate his apology and that it was such a rapid response, but what he said calls for greater action.” Carson said she doesn’t think Simpson “has the judgment to make decisions that impact so many Americans, and in particular I represent older Americans and older female Americans.”
She said that a group of feminist leaders – including her and OWL president Donna Wagner; Eleanor Smeal of the Feminist Majority Foundation; Kim Gandy, the former president of the National Organization for Women, Terry O’Neill, the current president of NOW; Martha Burk, the former chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations; Susan Scanlan, the current chair of the NCWO – were writing a letter to President Obama demanding Simpson’s ouster.
On April 27, Carson, wrote a piece entitled “Enough with the Pink Panthers Bit” in the Huffington Post. Carson wrote that Simpson “insists that the solution to fixing America's deficit is to target Social Security. Over and over again, he states that the Gray Panthers and the Pink Panthers are the only people who are making noise about not cutting Social Security benefits. Well, I have some news for Mr. Simpson – there is no group called the Pink Panthers working to protect Social Security. Is this some disgusting attempt at ageism and sexism in one cutesy alliterative quip? Not surprising given his record of sexism (i.e., Justice Thomas' confirmation hearings) and his constant bashing of seniors (ever hear the term ‘greedy geezers’? We can thank Simpson for that).”
Carson wrote that Simpson paints a picture “that everyone receiving Social Security benefits is living the high life – driving luxury cars, dining out and living in gated communities. If this is true, can someone please tell me where it is that I can retire in the United States where I can buy my Lexus, make house payments and never have to cook at home again on my $11,000?” She asserted that “Social Security doesn't contribute to the problem, and in fact runs an enormous surplus.” The deficit commission should focus on defense spending and the Bush era tax cuts, she wrote.
Simpson emailed Carson on Monday of this week, writing that he had spent “many years in public life” working to stabilize Social Security “while people like you babble into the vapors about ‘disgusting attempts at ageism and sexism’ and all the rest of that crap.”
The former Senate Minority Whip referred Carson to a PDF of a May 12, 2010 presentation by Stephen C. Goss, Chief Actuary of the Social Security Administration, to the debt commission, which shows that after 2037, only 76% of benefits will be available. (You can see the PDF HERE.)
“If we can’t get a handle on this system and make it sustainable and assure long term solvency, and make some changes that are ‘minor’ at the present time and will become ‘major’ as each year passes,” Simpson wrote, “then take a look at the chart on Page 6 which I hope you are able to discern if you are any good at reading graphs – or anything that might challenge your biases and prejudices… If you have some better suggestions about how to stabilize Social Security instead of just babbling into the vapors, let me know.”
He concluded: “And yes, I’ve made some plenty smart cracks about people on Social Security who milk it to the last degree. You know ‘em too. It’s the same with any system in America. We’ve reached a point now where it’s like a milk cow with 310 million t*ts! Call when you get honest work!”
Carson tells ABC News that she was “stunned” by the email, which she said “says a lot of things that are inappropriate for someone in his position.”
The comment about the “310 million t*ts” is the one that “draws the most attention of the feminist movement,” she said, but other parts of the letter she found offensive as well, including the suggestion that “someone who runs a national non profit might not be able to read a graph.”
“He really lacks the judgment to be the co-chair of a presidentially appointed commission,” she said. OWL wrote a letter (read it HERE) asking the president to fire Simpson.
In addition, OWL worked with the National Council of Women’s Organizations to form a petition calling for Simpson’s ouster, “(g)iven Senator Simpson’s clear disrespect for Social Security, the American people, and his degrading, sexist, ageist and profane language.”
“Simpson suggests that anyone supporting people who most need help and who deserve the benefits they paid for must be dishonest or stupid. (Greedy Geezers, Pink Panthers, People not caring a whit about their grandchildren, the lesser people),” the petition stated. “Such open contempt goes beyond the pale and cannot be tolerated from someone in such a position of authority….Mr. President, it is time for you to stand up for the millions of American workers who have paid into Social Security on the promise of a secure retirement, and put them ahead of political sportsmanship. Mr. Simpson must be removed from this commission, either by his own will, or by yours. Show American workers you mean what you say about protecting Social Security. This is your chance.”
In addition, NOW announced what is calling its "T*ts for an Ass" campaign, asking its 500,000 members and supporters “to use our website or Twitter account to help us buy baby bottle nipples, which we'll hand deliver to the White House with a letter urging President Obama to fire Alan Simpson.”
Simpson wrote to Carson today: “I apologize for what I wrote. I can see that my remarks have caused you anguish, and that was not my intention. I certainly did not intend to diminish your hard work for the Older Women’s League. I know you care deeply about strengthening Social Security, and so do I, just as deeply. I remember your testimony at our public hearing in June about the importance of retirement security for women.”
He invited her to meet with him in person so he “could learn further of your sincere concerns.”
Carson said what Simpson wrote “goes far beyond foot in mouth type of statement. Any sort of basic research on Sen. Simpson shows this is a pattern with him, saying things that are pretty inappropriate.”

So you live off of your childrens labor, get in some cases hundreds of times more than you paid in, and bankrupt the country so that those children will not recieve the same “benefits” as their parents generation, and your mad at the politicans… Good Lord!
SS is a ponzi scheme, that will no longer exist one way or the other… Because sooner or later, as with all government programs, you run out of “other peoples money…”

None of these women’s groups complained when Lindsey Graham said that immigrant women “drop” babies. That was the most vile, sexist political discourse I have ever heard. And not one of these women’s groups objected to it. These groups do not care about all women.

I agree with Paul Krugman on this one. (“Fire Alan Simpson”). He’s been talking nonsense about social security from the get-go.
Posted by: Cara | August 25, 2010, 7:11 pm 7:11 pm
And Krugman has been spot on with all of his analysis. He’s the laughingstock of most other econ bloggers and pundits. But hey, he’s got a Nobel and writes for the NYT. I remember when both of those things used to mean something.
Krugman is one of the few that doesn’t see a problem with Social Security, don’t mind that they paid out more than they took in and never invest that money anyways.

Well stated. krugman has become a hyper-partisan cartoon. His recent pieces on SS, Paul Ryan’s roadmap and Hangover Theory have been shredded by his critics.

This guy is a typical Republican – take the money that people are contributing to their retirement and gamble with it on Wall Street! Greedy bankers just can’t wait to get their hands on this fund. SS needs only MINOR adjustments to stay solvent for decades to come – the rumors of its death are wildly exaggerated. His only truthfulness is actually telling us what Republicans think of Social Security and those people that have to work for a living. Most of the rest of the GOP manipulates words to con people. He should not be in a position to decide the matter!

Imagine if- oh let’s just say- Biden had said it. He has the “Get Out of Jail Free” card: a (D) behind his name. The (R) behind the geezer Simpson’s name is the only reason they are calling for his head.

As I said, I agree with Paul Krugman on this one. (“Fire Alan Simpson”).
In regards to Paul Ryan’s Roadmap, Krugman wasn’t alone in shredding it (how dare he use facts and mention the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center– though I thought the flim flam thing was harsh and rather unnecessary since I do believe Ryan is earnest and willing to put ideas out there and make hard decisions in order to solve our problems. Dean Baker did, too, @ Fun With Paul Ryan and the Washington Post, CEPR. (Apparently Ryan has Ryan had 20 inaccuracies in his editorial responding to Krugman).
But I’d be willing to read Krugman’s critics. Which response to Krugman’s takedown of Ryan do you consider the best, the most factual, the most shredding?

When you get your Nobel prize or your column at NYT, I’ll take your opinion on either, or both, more seriously.

How is talking about the t*ts on a milk cow sexist? Have these women never been to a dairy farm?
As a woman, I am offended that these women’s groups are comparing women to milk cows.

Another politician caught speaking the truth…
Social Security is a giant ponzi scheme… Bernie Madoff is in jail for a far less crime…
There is no “lock box” there is no money in the Social Security Trust Fund…
All the surplus money paid into Social Security was given to the treasury in exchange for Treasury Bonds… And the actual money was promptly spent…
This money was used to fund a variety of programs through the general fund….
Now that there is no surplus, the Social Security Administration must commence to cash in the Treasury Bonds to pay out benefits (both earned and to the scammers, e.g. the phony disabled).
The problem is that there is no money in the Treasury… it has all been spent, and then some…
So the Government must find money to redeem the bonds held by the Social Security Administration and to fund the programs that were previously funded from Social Security surplus taxes…
This means increased taxes or borrowing by a Government already in hock up to its ears….
The coming generation will vote to stop the nonsense…

Let’s not forget just who “robbed” the SSI fund, LBJ and his Admin.! So if there is a “D” behind the name, you can cast a wary eye at it and go “things that make you say , Hummm”.

so pathetic..if a fire truck arrived to douse the flames at one of these feminists’ homes and there wasn’t a woman firefighter on the truck they’d probably allow their own home to burn to the ground in order to make a point about gender inequality. Get a grip ladies, the visual of a skrawny cow with 310 MILLION t*ts is perfect…PERFECT!

Like Dean Baker says, our income is a cost to the rich. They will look to cut it wherever they can, whether this is wages for private sector workers, pensions for public employees, or Social Security for retirees.
We need to take back the stolen money – the multimillion dollar bonuses for the Wall Street wizards is a direct drain on the economy. So are the bloated paychecks of top executives and their lackey boards.
Obama needs not just to fire Simpson, but to abolish the Catfood Commission entirely.

No, she doesn’t have a nobel prize and she isn’t an economist or demonstrate much understanding of economics beyond a certain ideological glibness, but I’ll read it.
In regards to the CBO report, I’ve already read that, and Krugman acknowledged it as well. But I’ve also read the Tax Policy Center’s analysis and that of the Citizens for Tax Justice.

Republican privatization of Social Security is not an option. Social Security protects and guarantess peoples retirements when private companies cannot, remeber Enron when they wiped out all the peoples retirement savings, bet those people are glad now they have Social Security to fall back on.

Hey, people, that’s the technical term for where the milk comes out of a dairy cow. Look it up.

We draw the line in the sand when it comes to protecting Social Security which a recent pundit on Huffington wrote keeps over 20,000,000 Americans out of poverty. Mainstreet has paid for it from working hard and there is enough saved up to last in 2030 or more without Republicans raiding raiding now or in the future. This economy will turn around and new technology is coming which will help like the internet did.
Do not comprise on this Gibbs ok! Mainstreet is paying a high price so Wall Street could be bailed out and they are making record profits now. We don’t want the Republicans to throw our grandparents out on the street and into poverty.

Don’t confuse the progressives, they think milk comes from the grocery store. Fact is, they’d die in short order if they had to actually milk a cow or do anything to harvest their own food.

It’s not Republicans who took away our Social Security cost of living increase this year and next. It was the Democratic Congress….while they voted in a pay raise for themselves. Let’s call it like it is. Take away their fat cat pensions and put them on Social Security…..then watch how quickly they fix it!

Actually, only his spelling is wrong. Teat= protuberance from which milk is drawn from an udder, a perfectly apt description of Social Security. So many claim disability when they actually could work.

. . . and?
It’s a cow only Bernie Madoff would be proud of. Anybody serious about reforming Social Security must admit the serious structural flaws inherent in our current system that requires young workers to pay the benefits of retired workers. The analogy is apt indeed.

Social Security is NOT broken it just needs to be tweaked and it will be fine for another generation. It is GOP anti-government fools and geezers like Simpson who don’t understand the basic finances of the system (or want to privatize it God forbid). Simpson needs to be fired immediately. Obama is a one term pres in part because he has no judgment in making appointments. Hope you still like Chicago Mr President c’ause you’ll be back there in a coupla years.
