Mehlman to ABC News: “When I Was at the RNC, I Hadn’t Come to Terms With This”
In a phone interview with ABC News, former White House political director, Bush-Cheney 2004 re-election campaign manager and RNC chairman Ken Mehlman confirms that he’s gay, a story first reported earlier this evening by The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder.
Why is he coming out now? We asked him.
“I had gotten involved in helping to raise some money for AFER” – the American Foundation for Equal Rights, a group that supports same-sex marriage and is suing to overturn California’s Proposition 8 – “and in the context of doing that some questions had come up and I wanted to answer the questions honestly,” Mehlman told ABC News.
Mehlman said that whatever people had whispered in the past, “My family and my friends found out about this in the last several months.”
Why was he in the closet during those many years in politics?
“When I was at the RNC I hadn’t come to terms with it, I hadn’t accepted it.”
Mehlman told ABC News that he disagreed with those who argue that the Bush-Cheney campaign and RNC’s push against same-sex marriage was a decisive reason for Bush’s re-election. Republican leaders had pushed for anti-same-sex-marriage referenda in states across the country to gin up turnout.
“My own view is that’s not what decided the 2004 election,” Mehlman said. “I’ve had debates with friends on it. I understand where people are coming from.”
Does he regret being part of that campaign in any way?
“No,” Mehlman said. “What I regret is the fact that I had not come to terms with this part of my life and therefore, because I had not come to terms with it, I was not able to do what I was able to do in other areas and work for a more inclusive and broader party.”
Mehlman is now obviously supportive of same sex marriage, but he cautioned activists, saying “it’s a mistake to assume to those disagree on the right to marry issue are motivated by bigoted feelings. A lot of the friends I have who feel differently on that issue are motivated by heartfelt belief. I look forward to trying to persuade them on my own views but I think it’s a mistake to question their motives.”

No doubt Karl Rove knew this when he handpicked Ken from his own White House staff to run the Bush-Cheney 2004 re-elect campaign. And he picked him anyway.
Gay bashing was the GOP’s 2004 wedge issue. And Ken Mehlman got rich from it. Business as usual.

Usually it is the other side that outs some prominent member of the ministry or the Republican party on the Thursday before the election to dishearten the conservative Christians…
In this election, however, this will just add fuel to the fire…
Throw them all out…

While I am glad that Mehlman’s personal journey has brought him to a better place where he start to understand and accpet the gay self that God created and loves, he should not be under any illusion: his actions on behalf of the far right have done enormous damage to this country and to his LGBT brothers and sisters. He must come to terms with that and atone (preferably through his actions) before he can expect a big gay welcome in this tent.

Remember Jeff Gannon or AKA Jeff Gucker.
Seems that our professional male prostitute, phony “news” reporter and keeper of a Forbidden Journal, using a Secret Service day pass, visited the White House 196 times in two years, and spent the night 12 times! That’s right, spent the night 12 times.
Who did he spend the night with?

Ok, so, here’s the truth…
As a young man of 20 I was the victim of “date rape” by a high school counselor… a position of esteem in my young mind…
No, I wasn’t in high school at the time… I was a lonely, extremely poor young man waiting in the Wiesbaden Haupt Bahnhof, waiting for a local train to Meintz where I had a $1 Dollar per hour job at the Meintz-Kastel depot…
I was approached and seduced by another American… the said Wiesbaden High School counselor…
He bought me beers and invited me back to his place in the BOQ…
There he served me strong liquor, played good music on his stereo and engaged me in entertaining conversation…
Yes… I suspected that he might be “strange”… but I thought that by telling of him about my girl friends… about my interest in certain girls with whom I worked in Meintz, he would understand…
But not so, I eventually passed out in the shared bed… not so uncommon in those days… and then was awakened with a terrible pain, then passed out again…
In the morning I awoke, I knew what had taken place… but too shy, too embarrassed to say anything…
I caught the early train to Meintz. He told me that I must come back… but I never did. I spent the next three days in terrible turmoil…
Two years later I confessed my sin to a priest who was very understanding and supportive…
That’s why I oppose homosexuals serving openly… its not about the shower… its about the power… the power of the superior over the subordinate…
DADT, at least, constrains behavior…

As for working for a Party that is broader and more inclusive; that ‘other’ Party claims such; but only to the extent that you agree with their collective – ‘Party line’ – wisdom. They will celebrate Mehlman’s ‘coming out’; and they will attack him for not being on same page, paragraph; line per their Gay agenda.

I do believe that some people are motivated by heartfelt belief, and not pure animosity. However, regardless of where the motivation for treating people badly comes from, it doesn’t change the fact that millions of people’s lives have been ruined due to irrational and wrong “heartfelt beliefs.”
Some say it’s just a different opinion. I guarantee that people who say that have not suffered through the discrimination and hate.

I am not surprized and it is time that all Americans were treated equally whether you agree or disagree. There seem to be an awful lot of gays in this country who are afraid for their jobs or getting personal attacks coming out. I think that they do deserve rights as long as they work and contribute to society. This was a good article and all Republicans aren’t bad. As I am one too.

That’s because there isn’t any such thing as gay marriage.
Marriage is the union of one man and one woman.
Garriage is the union of two people of the same sex.
Two different words for two different things.

“…Mr. Mehlman had not even accepted or understood that he was gay until a few months ago. He wasn’t hiding anything; he didn’t realize he had anything TO hide.”
@mal2cats: Although the above is indeed possible, it is very, very, VERY unlikely. I am more than willing to bet you $1000 …. no, $5000, that there has been more than one same-sex encounter in Mr. Melman’s past. Once, is an experiment. Twice. is just to make a determined determination of what you like. Third, you’re hooked, and fourth–where’s the rainbow flag.
Ya know what this probably is … I betcha (notice how confident I am in keeping my money) that blogger which “outs” politicians against gay rights had something not only on this guy but maybe someone even higher. The blogger is probably ready to come forth with it and Melman–the good party loyalists is taking the sword. After all,he really isn’t a big fish.

Why are blasting this guy with such ghastly accusations? You do not know he did any of those things.
He was a young man who had ‘certain feelings’ but didn’t or couldn’t understand them. Let me fill you in on a few facts: most gay people do not readily and immediately understand and/or accept who they are. I have many gay acquaintances; they all tell me much what this Mr. Mehlman says.
Is this what the Democrats/liberals are becoming? Totally devoid of compassion or forgiveness? If it is, I say SHAME on all of you.

Another example of intolerance and prejudice is wrong. America should BE the land of the free, not a land with laws based in intolerance and prejudice. The 2004 GOP rally cry of anti-gays to gain votes is very similar to today’s GOP rally cry of anti-Islam to gain votes. American voters eagerly soak up the propaganda designed to tap energy from existing prejudices.

…and that’s why you find many of that type in the bathrooms, parks, etc.

Nobody in the Bush admin ever “bashed gays” – nor have there been and “anti-gay policies” If memory serves me correctly, all of the civil union laws which give same sex couples the equal leagal status and rights as married couples fostered under the Bush Admin – it is only the drive to make same sex couples = marriage that has been in dispute for the past decade – and there are several very legitimate reasons why I and others like me oppose so-called “gay marriage” and they have nothing to do with being anti gay.
Posted by: Scott | August 26, 2010, 9:50 am 9:50 am
And no I dont expect gay people to understand the reasons because you would almost by definition need to experience actual marriage to understand it – it isnt some legal concept drawn out on a piece of paper.

Why should this even be news, so he started telling people he is gay. Its sad that the newspapers even write about it. His sexual orientation should be of no more interest to people then what color socks he prefers or whether he likes pepsi or coke.
Posted by: Kim | August 26, 2010, 9:56 am 9:56 am
The “Civil Union” would solve the legal issue. One’s sexual preference is just one aspect of this temporary material existence. The more absorbed in the body we become, the farther away from our spiritual nature we drift.

Mehlman uses the word “accept” being homosexual. Better terms would be to “give in” or “surrender.” To raise the white flag to sin and become a slave. When a person gives in to temptations to sin (fornication, sexual deviation, unfaithfulness to one’s spouse, etc) then that person becomes enslaved that immoral lifestyle. What the world calls “freedom” is nothing but a prison.

I am sure since Mr. Melhman enjoying his new over $4 million residence in Manhattan and the George W. Bush tax cuts that he enjoyed has to address some “guilt” he has – it’s hard to want to be accepted and function in a world you were VERY adept at using for personal, political and financial gain. Many of us who have fought for gay and lesbian equality over the years want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for being the architect of the 2004 Bush reelection campaign that kept the anti-gay agenda before the electorate – it certainly was not ready to address the invasion of a soverign nation and a war of choice. We want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for his role in developing strategy that resulted in George W. Bush threatening to veto ENDA or any bill containing hate crimes laws. We want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for the pressing of two Federal Marriage Amendments as political tools. We want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for developing the 72-hour strategy, using homophobic churches to become political arms of the GOP before Election Day. And we DO NOT want the usual Republican spin that “isn’t it good that Ken has come out” – that line is good for the Republican party since “sin” is wonderful if it doesn’t involve you. Mr. Melhman the harm you did, the harm you supported, the harm you ignored, the harm you kept silence on is beyond the pale of understanding. This is akin to the Philadelphia Story – don’t ask for forgiveness after the patient is dead. I am furious at you – absolutely 100% furious. The White House communications officials protected you for years and you dodged and skirted the issue as you allowed thousands to be emotionally scared and hurt. As a gay man I’m having a hard time with Mr. Mehlman’s announcement. I am glad he’s finally found himself, however one has to ask why such a public outpouring from someone who for so long kept his orientation secret? Given his years vehemently opposing gay people and gay rights with what can only be described as vigor, I don’t feel comfortable welcoming him into the fold. For me this just appears to be self serving and probably a platform to set the stage for a forthcoming book or a run for public office. If it was such a private issue for him before a private coming out seems more appropriate. Most of us “out” gays don’t make a big issue about it. I don’t walk around wearing an “I’m gay” t-shirt or carrying a rainbow flag particularly in the work place. If people ask I don’t hide but it’s really not anyone’s business who I love or what I do in my bedroom. Why Mr. Mehlman feels the need to tell the entire world in such a “see me, praise me for my courage” way is quite suspect. I still wouldn’t trust him any further than I could throw him. Gay or not, he was still a part of the worst political slime machine in our history. Sorry Mr. M this is one gay who’s not impressed by your revelation. Where is the apology to me and everyone else for working so hard to prevent my right to marry? When I hear some contrition I might have a better opinion.

Government and the courts should stay out of this whole gay marriage business. Public opinions are moving faster than these two institutions already. Acceptance of gay marriage is a forgone conclusion. Just the matter of time when there are formal state laws to allow that to happen. Instead of calling it gay marriage, call that civil union as you will. Seriously, why should the govn, the courts intervene when two persons are truly in love of each other. Republicans better handle this issue with care. I vote for the GOP in almost all the races because I believe in lower taxes, smaller govn, and personal responsibility. All these socially divisive policies like gay marriage, abortion etc etc are the exact opposite of what the Republican party stands for – we want smaller govn, less govn intrusions, and that includes what happen between two grown persons and their personal love preferences. If the GOP allows the bible thumpers like Huckabee, Bauer, Robertson to go around and preach what people should do in their own private bedroom, the Republican party is doomed. The GOP better wakes up fast…acceptance of gay marriage/civil union is a forgone conclusion..

How about Civil Unions for everyone. If you want to get ‘married’ find a church and do it there. Separation of state and church. Civil Unions/marriages are contracts between individuals recognized by the state. Since some people are so hung up on marriage being between a man and woman and citing religious reasons, make marriage a religious ceremony, but to be recognized by the state, change the document to Civil Union. They can get a marriage certificate from the church. If the church recognizes same sex unions, it’s up to them.

Parallex View and rkm63 and others. This IS important on many, many levels. While the desire to shift the kleig light to President Obama is a normal Karl Rovian, Republican or spin tactic – let us keep the light on the subject and not try and wrestle accountability into the trashbin. In the election of 2000 [forget Florida for a minute] had West Virginia not gone for Bush the course of history would have been altered – how was WV possible – the robophone technique of gays and religion. That gays were going to change the landscape of America took a state so religiously anchored in homophobia that it became firmed anchored in the Bush camp. The architects of this were not unknown to Mr. Mehlman they and the neo-cons had selected GWB long before his failed business and groomed him through Gov – not the tax [largest shift in personal wealth in the nation's history] could be accomplished – Mr. Mehlman certainly benefitted from that one [he now owns a $4.5 million co-op in NYC's Chelesa] and the eventual invasion and a war of choice on a country that had not attacked this one could be fulfilled – all under “Don’t ask, don’t tell”. The economic diaster of 2008, the deregulations, the threats of veto on human rights issues – all at the feet of the Bush Administration. And who was on his knees in adoration while the jester in court played before King Cheney – Mr. Mehlman who know sees some error in his ways. President Obama is not to blame for the errors of the past nor the burden he was handed. While he may be errent in his direction and his Administration’s decisions they are not accountable for what is said above. This IS news – because News without “opioninization” aking to Fox reporting makes us stop, listen, think and reflect. Mehlman can not undo the harm he did and was party to – but we can certainly make sure it doesn’t happen again, first by not trying to rewrite history and secondly by not trying to put the current President’s problems as an excuse.

“hadnt accepted it” simply means he hadnt made the choice to be gay. Now he has. So all is well in liberal-land.

Hey Jake,
Unemployment is at 9.5% and governments across the country are broke and deeply in debt. International tensions are high and a serious conflagration is a distinct possibility.
Why don’t you do a story the nation cares about.

Its not Republican hypocrisy that homosexuals infiltrate their system. It is the fault of the homosexual himself.

chap….blah blah blah…Better hit the books on what matters to America because exam time is fast approaching, 2012 election, and the multiply choice answers are not limited to A.) It’s Bush’s fault and B.)It’s Bushes fault, pass me my 7 iron……..
BTW One could argue that the Clinton Administration open up lending practices through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to those who really could not afford to purchase a house thus the market overheated….and…wait for it….what goes up and gotta come down….. This is one little ole mess everyone contributed too and IS contributing to…..

Big surprise. There are all kinds of rumors and perversions in high office. Remember Jeff Gannon, the DC Madame who committed suicide, the “callboy” scandals, Larry King scandal, male prostitute ring out of Frank’s property, the “widestance” senator, etc. It is very useful for the national parties, and their backers, to get people into office with perversions, addictions, secrets, or corruption. This can then be held over their head when it comes to voting and towing the party line.

Do some research and stop with the “choice” nonsense. If you’re straight, did you choose to be? No, didn’t think so….

Now sir…you will have to come to grips with the fallout. You are a phoney and more importantly a liar. To keep a secret about your sexual preference is understandable but to work aginst it in the Bush administration and be responsible for all the negativity and cause many bills to be passed against it ….I cannot condone. How,in good conscience, face your fellow gay people after all you did to hamper their lifestyle. Apologies are not enough…you need to work toward undoing what you did under the Bush administration. Let’s see if you have the courage to stand up to the republicans and say what they feel about gays is wrong. I doubt it…you want your cake and eat it too.

I can see these Oh, so tolerant Liberals are unleashing their hatred on Mr. Mehlman. Very predictable.
Good Luck to you, Ken Mehlman. I hope you will stay very involved in conservative politics. No one can beat you in a debate of ideas. You are the best! God Bless you and have a happy life.
