Oval Office Extreme Makeover?
ABC News' Ann Compton reports:
On the President’s first day back in the office from vacation, facing a deteriorating economic horizon, one Internet site is claiming he has returned to a newly redecorated Oval Office, complete with new carpets and drapes.
A White House spokesman tells ABC News the administration will have no immediate comment on the Drudge Report that “workers have been busy installing new carpets, drapes, painting, etc. in Oval Office.” But mediamatters.org, a progressive media watchdog site, has pounced, defending the Obama administration.
Under the headline “BREAKING: President Bush redecorated the White House,” mediamatters.org pre-buts any suggestion that a cosmetic face-lift would be what it calls “some sort of shocking waste of tax dollars.” It recalls the Bush administration upgrades including an expensive sunburst carpet designed by then-First Lady Laura Bush.
When the Obamas first arrived last year, the President declared he liked the carpet and saw no need for immediate redecorating.
The President has a prime time address scheduled Tuesday evening from the Oval Office on the end of combat operations in Iraq, but under traditional White House protocol, the network television camera will be allowed to focus only on the President at his desk, without wider angle views of the office drapes and furniture.

The Bush family should have been stopped from squandering money on luxuries–the obamas too. Has the message been lost somewhere in DC that American families are out of work, money & at the end of their financial rope? These people lack nothing materially yet find a new “low” every week.

During different economic times, I would expect the new Pres to put his touchs on his office, etc. However, a better example during what they say in their own words “the toughest economic times since the Great Depression” would be to use what they have since it is in good condition. They could even get the WH on another show–like they did on Top Chef with the 1st Lady–and have a design challenge with using what they already have or what is in storage. OH THAT’S RIGHT–these WH inhabitants are progressive liberal elites and it is do as I say, not as I do. Typical!

As an aside, what’s interesting is that I’m redoing our window treatments and the guy who does them– an independent small business owner– said business has been booming this spring, summer and fall, and was much worse in 2007 and 2008. In fact, he just hired someone to help with installations.

If one examines the current “decoration” in the oval office, one sees no red, white nor blue anywhere. If the US flag was removed, so would those colors.
The east room was docorated in moslem colors, yellow and browns. He speaks in front of a yellow tapestry, complete with arabic symbols embedded.
Also available via search are pics of BO taking offf his shoes for a moslem prayer, right inside the white house.
Images like that are the cause of 20% of the people believing he’s a moslem. Also revealing are his insistant claims of being a christian while all along he has never refutted his moslem religion and upbringing in Indonesia. To do so in public is a death sentence under Sharia Law.
What America sees is a president that claims one thing while doing another. He does not go to church. That says enough for many.

Like I have said for over a year.
The Obamas feel they are entitled. They are spending our money like it is water.
They are partying, vacationing, and laughing at hard working Americans with disdain. Latest two examples: Obama’s put down of the hundreds of thousands of citizens who were at a patriotic rally in Washington DC with Glenn Beck. Lastly, his refusal to produce his real and proper birth certificate or educational transcripts.
So, “Let them eat cake” until November 2010 and until we throw their sorry butts out of our White House.

How hilarious that the evil darklord Bush is now held as a defense by the left! LOL! “Well, Bush did it, too!”
Let’s recap, shall we?
1. Everything Bush did was wrong and indefensible.
2. Obama just did something that Bush did.
3. Therefore, by logical extension, Obama just did something wrong and indefensible.
Game. Set. Match. Thanks for coming, liberals, and be sure to tip your waitress (with a portion of your welfare checks, of course).

Knowing the kinds of things Bill Clinton did in the Oval Office, I can’t blame Bush for wanting new carpet.
But Obama seems H-ll bent on removing anything patriotic in the White House.

1. Bush’s vacations were mostly to his ranch and the press hated it. The few times he did not go to his ranch he went to Camp David. The Press had to film Bush actually cutting up a tree with a chain saw and they thought that boring. Not the elite Press Corps cup of tea.
2. Obummer & Co. have taken so many vacations it is hard to keep up with them all including his wife’s recent trip to Spain; with all of IL joining her.
3. So when want to compare Laura Bush preserving the historic details of our WH to Bush installing new paint, carpet, etc. to the billions of vacation $$ plus redecorating under obummer; the Bush adm. lived within means of the people. Obummers never have & never will.
4. You can take the person out of the ghetto, but if that is all they know you will never take the ghetto out of the person and the obummers live up to it.

all the bush stuff is so ridiculous at this point. as if there is not an obvious difference between what was done in 2004/5 or whenever BEFORE the entire economy fell apart and TODAY, in the midst of the the “greatest economic crisis since the great depression” as described by president obama. or has nothing changed? sure, maybe it’s all bush’s fault, but that doesn’t change the fact that we’re in the mess we’re in. and accordingly, does it matter what was done before the crash and by whom, and for that matter, even whose fault the crash was? and again, it’s so interesting that everything bush did was wrong and evil UNLESS obama also does it…then it’s okay. welcome to orwellville.

All of the US presidents redecorate, and as Americans, we should want the building that houses our President and where he receives foreign leaders to be something of which we are proud. These comments are so petty. You don’t have to like Obama, but harp on something that matters. It is really difficult to take your views seriously when your comments related to putting in carpets that face mecca or talk about him being from the ghetto.

I have no problem with the ‘makeover’ of the White House. Every president and first lady does it.
BUT what I take exception to is the double-standard by the media. When Bush did it the media (if you can call them that) had a field day with it and criticized him. But when Obama does it it’s no big deal.

Wow. When did conservatives become interior decorators where colors and carpets are symbols of a President’s religious beliefs? I want to know more about that Great Eye on the dollar bill – doesn’t it “prove” some Illuminati conspiracy theory?
In the real world, the Cabinet Room opens directly into the Oval Office – the rug is a resplendent red, bordered with stars and blue. A blue great seal of the United States is woven into the center of the Oval Office carpet.
Meanwhile, for those interested in more important issues, America’s combat mission in Iraq is scheduled to end tomorrow. Our President is honoring them. And all Americans have an obligation to our troops and their families for their tremendous sacrifices.

So this President has made every attempt telling us how bad Bush was and how he would “change the culture”. But since being in office, each time he is held accountable to something, the defense was “well Bush did it too!” Well are you the anti-Bush or are you Bush’s third term? Bush doing it is the defense of my 4 year old blaming his sister, not the POTUS. I remind America that this President and the Dems in Congress excoriated the CEOs of various companies receiving bailouts for their reckless spending in jets, vacations, retreats, and other lavish spending while the rest of the country is losing jobs, homes, etc. Since then, Obama has done no differently, showing us he cares little for wasting OUR money on his own perks – something he had no problem criticizing CEO’s for. Hypocrite and liar.

there was a determination that there was something stale about the Oval Office.
So they painted with no change, then they hoped new carpet would help. Then went in a new direction and replaced the drapes. to no avail. then they realized what was stale was the socialist philosophy. only one way to fix that folks send out the old worn out marxist dogma in 2012
Posted by: scooter | August 30, 2010, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm
Every President has the option of redoing the Oval Office once they are elected, so this is no big deal. It was odd that Obama chose to keep the butt-ugly carpet & curtain design that GW Bush selected when he first moved in. Thank god he finally got around to ditching that hideous setup.

Did they put an upolstered foot rest on the Resolute Desk for Obama to rest his dainty little feet on, since that’s the only function the Oval Office seems to have for him?

Sure every president decorates, including George W Bush. However none have do so in such dire economic times. To lavishly spend on decorating, while many people struggle to buy a can of paint, is just another example of how this president doesn’t get it.

Makeovers are indeed standard. However I have a suggestion.
To honor his christian religion while showing respect to others howb about sp,en frescoes of Jesus,. Moses and Mohammed in key scenes fom their lives. Mohammed with Allah whispering the koran in his ear would be great. For Christians it could show his disciples sneaking the wounded but still alive out of the tomb to recuperate and fake, i mean MAKE appearannces later. Moses could be shown murdering a Egyptian stone cutter and hiding the body.

I guess Media Matters is now an arm of AB News. Will the members of the mainstream media simply stop with the nonsense and letting it out that they favor one side over another? I mean c’mon already – if we didn’t know if before the last election, we knew it after. Of course we knew it long before that 0 the difference in coverage between the two parties is remarkable. But it goes to more than that – the mainstream media consistently presses for a more leftist America – it does it through the news stories it presents, the entertainment topics it presents, everything. The question is why – if most Americans are conservative why is the mainstream media so liberal? Why not challenge Fox for conservative viewers – there’s money to be made there and these are public companies with a duty to their shareholders to make money. And why was the decision made to appeal to Democrats – and when was it made? All of these questions should be answered – will someone PLEASE do the research!!!

Not the first time a president redecorated his office; however, it is in extremely bad taste to do so during a major recession and at a time the government is existing on borrowed funds, literally trillions of dollars. If you think Bush drove the economy into the ditch, the Obama has put deficit spending into overdrive with no end in sight. The landing will be a “crash and burn,” and you will lament for the Bush days.

Leave the guy alone. The amount of money it would take to completely redecorate the Oval Office is equal to about 15 seconds, literally, of a typical day’s federal government spending. A president not redecorating in recognition of a sour economy reminds me of Jimmy Carter walking to his inauguration. Pure, useless demagoguery. Symbolism is for idiots, like the ones posting here.

This guy spends 376 million on decorations? I am killing myself daily to try and find 400K for a business that will employ 50 people part time including money spent to outfit the facility.

When are the members of our illustrious media going to stop using the Drudge Report and various “internet sites” as their assignment editors? Ann Compton, you should know better.
BTW, I don’t know anything about a redecoration of the Oval Office but anyone with half a brain and google skills can find articles from 2008 (note, BEFORE Obama was President) that state that Congress approved monies to complete a major upgrade of the White House, including electrical, plumbing work, etc. in a project that would be the first major renovation since Harry Truman was President and would take roughly 10 years to complete. This is a long overdue project that has nothing to do with Obama and was approved BEFORE he was President and will still be going on AFTER he is President.
BTW, anyone with google skills could ALSO find articles from 2009 stating that the Obamas were the first President and 1st Lady in years to TURN DOWN the traditional $100,000 given to first families to redecorate the private quarters to their liking. This was already appropriated money that the Obamas could have used as every other First Family have done. Instead, they used their own money, to little fanfare. Well, you say, they’re millionaires… they can afford it. Yes, and the Bushes were millionaires too yet THEY took the money.

Gotta love the left always defending 0bama with the line “Well Bush did it too!” 0bama ran on a message of hope and CHANGE! And then changed NOTHING. And when this is pointed out the defense is to point at Bush and say “he is doing nothing different than Bush did”.
So he loses either way. Either he ran on a lie “change”, or he squandered public funds to redecorate. Or, as in this case, both.

Ms. Compton – Your journalism skills are now on the same level as Confidential Magazine. First, you should look at what was in the transition budget that was NOT used by the incoming President and secondly, you then should have looked at the source of the Drudge Report [that my dear is a revelation you need]. Without name identification “reliable sources” becomes a Salem witch trial – Walter Cronkite and thousands of Quill and Scroll students who are demanded daily for the 5 “W”s and How would be ashamed of you. ABC should fire you – Fox will hire you immediately so I don’t worry about you draining the unemployment til.

Oops make that Obama = John Thain, famous Bank of America/Merill Lynch executive decorator that BO liked to make fun of.
It reminds me of when I ran into Bill Ayers at the United desk at SFO complaining about not getting an upgrade. It’s not that taking business class or redecorating is wrong, but when you spend your day deploring fat cats and spendthrift ways, these actions just spit in the face of the people to which they are preaching.

Posted by: Rhonda | August 30, 2010, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm
While it is common for presidents and first ladies to put their personal touches on the White House, one can’t help but question the wisdom of doing so in the worst economy since the Great Depression. Regardless of how or why the country is in said economic turmoil, it is in poor taste for the Obamas to redecorate with tax payer money when people have been without job and are losing their homes. That said, it is also in poor taste for the Obamas to continue to take, what seems like, monthly vacations, also using tax payer funding at least in part. Those who continue to compare Obama to Bush are simply trying to distract from the fact that Obama seems to be convinced that his role as the leader of the United States entitles him to act like a foreign royal playboy.

See, this is how the middle-class working family would handle the situation.
In 2008 while both parents had decent-paying jobs with a nice stock market portfolio while expenses were reasonable they decide…Let’s re-carpet the house and paint all the walls. We’ll start saving now and should be ready to go before Christmas 2010.
BUT it’s 2010, Dad’s lost his job and Mom’s hours have been cut in half. They don’t have health insurance anymore and the mortgage payment just ballooned. On top of all that, that nice stockmarket portfolio is worth less than half from 2008.
Do they go ahead with the remodeling? HECK NO! They have enough sense to know that what they thought they could afford in 2008…they can’t in 2010. The savings is needed to pay more essential crucial bills. That new carpet will have to wait.

Hey not to worry as to where the funds are coming from for this extravagant re-decorating venture of the oval office. Perhaps the money is coming out of the Obama slush fund or that reality show that builds homes or renovations for unfortunate folks for FREE.

This is not news. Could ABCNews please actually report on something of substance? Perhaps, let’s have an honest debate about how Keynsian economics has flaws. What works, what doesn’t? Lets bring some serious experts on both sides. We’re facing massive budget deficits, and we just want to add more to it. Maybe we should be having a debate about which government agencies need to be consolidated, removed, etc. because of their ineffectiveness. What is the American taxpayer getting for it’s $? Let’s talk more about how America is getting fleeced by the billions and tens of billions. Let’s stop focusing on petty crime unless it’s truly on a widespread mega-massive basis so that in aggregration it amounts to something. Let’s put some heat on both sides of the aisle when engage in pork bills. The media needs to always have an anti-government tilt no matter who is in charge of what. Are you the watchdogs? I guess not. You’re about as big a failure as the SEC was in the case of Madoff.

I disagree this president completely understands how his extravagance causes pain. Just like those Marxist leaders that the Marxist professors he sought out taught him about did. They understood full well that they lived in extravagance while those they represented lived in abject poverty standing in line for bread and toilet paper.
Like those Marxists he has admired, he, his wife, and his ilk believe they are entitled to it.

Fix or replace broken or damaged items, but it has only been a couple of years since the Bush’s repainted etc. The difference….we didn’t have hundreds of thousands of people out of work. If it cost US – the taxpayers $350,000 (for example) how many families could we feed? Couldn’t this have waited for better times? Let’s put people above appearances.

In 2009 when he took office, the following short news story appeared, but it did not get much press. Every four years, Congress appropriates $100,000 for the President to use for renoavations in the White House. The Obamas have turned that down and will pay for whatever work they do themselves. They have also refused support from the privately funded White House Historical Association.

@ will and MikeMo1947:
What, again, did Barack Obama receive a Nobel Prize for? What did he actually *do* (as in, work, labor he performed by individual grit and ability) to be honored with such a “Prize”?
It was a celebrity-media event, that award to Obama and nothing more. A lot of Leftwing Swedes were marvelling at the clever racial event, that being the candidacy by Barack Obama based upon fantasy and nothing more. Even his books are so fraught with exaggerations and outright lies as to be fantasy-fiction. THAT’s what the Swedes were fascinated with, such “magic” in fiction deceiving so many.
Obama has been spoon-fed his entire lifetime and he’s still unhappy and resents human society. He just thinks he’s not appreciated enough, that humanity just isn’t bowing down and thanking him ‘enough.’ Pity that Sweden fell for his charade as they did.

After laboring feverishly during his brief stint in the U.S. Senate to engineer an American defeat in Iraq; and, to scuttle President Bush’s planned troop surge that has brought a victorious conclusion to the Iraqi conflict, Obama now contemptuously attempts to claim credit for the successful U.S. combat forces withdrawal on the BUSH timetable, a timetable that BUSH had negotiated with the Iraqi leadership. The only substantive achievement which has conveniently occurred during the Obama tenure. However, with Obama’s demonstrated propensity for mis-management, we should never underestimate his capacity for “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory” in BOTH Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama, devoid of the characteristic trait of integrity, is a despicable farce of a man who if he had even a remote sliver of common decency would give an Oval Office address to the Nation lauding the foresight and determination of his predecessor, George W. Bush, in achieving victory in Iraq. A foresight that Obama and other left-wing defeatists such as Harry Reid and his own VP were totally derelict of. 2010, followed by 2012, have become the most important elections in American history. If left unrestrained, Obama, rather thru sheer incompetence or willful intention, will do irreparable harm to America’s economic, and National Security interests. Greg Neubeck

Wow, such great, hard-hitting news here. With this great coverage of what matters to the masses (you know, Tapper, the ignorant people you believe us to be), I can’t understand why network news’ ratings are about the same level as Congress approval ratings.
Just imagine, if we could have gotten coverage like this on candidate (then Senator) Obama, the stimulus, the health care bill; alas, but wasn’t meant to be. The elite so-called journalists decided that the greater unwashed needed to know about Obama’s White House (oops, was I being a racist since I referred to it as White) redecoration.
It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. If a Republican was in office, the headline would be probably shame them into spending money while the nation is in a depression (yep, not a recession folks and not a double one either; it’s a depression), but since it’s a Democrat, the media’s love, it’s okay.

Reading this comments make me so, so terribly sad.
We have a real deficit of character in this country. Every president redecorates the Oval Office.
It’s not just the President though, almost all Senior Staff do in every administration, good times and bad. That is the kind of thing you get to do when you work hard and become someone important.
Whether it is good public relations to do so is another matter, but let’s cool it with the racist tinged comments and the general lack of class.

People should not be too quick to judge about the spendings of these folks…you know, it is entirely possible that Michelle will get the new carpet from the last round of HomeDepot summer tent sales…or the chairs are imported from China, you know, those things that sold in WalMart…The curtains are probably bought from the Burlington Coat Factory…BCF also keep those clearance items around…as for Dinnerware, maybe a stack of dixiecups or chinet…then again, how likely for this crowd to care about the government spending and budgets…NOT LIKELY…remember Obama ran his creditcard to the max before he was a senator…Michelle only got her big plum job with 300K salary after Hubby became a senator…these people are not exactly financial whiz jobs in their own finances…let alone the money is not theirs…BUT OURS..

I don’t know the numbers between Obama and Bush. But I do know times are different today, as the Economy has suffered. Had the president shown perhaps an inkling of some modesty, this would be no big deal. What this is, is a pattern of outright disdain. Look all presidents live relatively large, but Bush spent his time on his own ranch, ditto for Reagan, Bush 41 Camp David, ditto for Clinton. Obama sends his wife and kids to the most expensive resort in the world, while Obama has played close to 60 rounds of golf in 21 months, and has taken 6 vacations. This is called rubbing our faces in it. Frankly its disgusting!

Bush didn’t cause the current economic mess by himself. He had help. Namely, Paulson, Bernanke, and Geithner.
Yet, Obama kept two of the three idiots who put us in this mess. If he were REALLY so opposed to Bush’s economic policies, he should have booted those two to the curb.
So, his constantly whining about his “inheritance” is growing quite old.
(And, of course, no one FORCED him to run for president. One would also assume that he knew about the bad economic situation when he accepted the democratic nomination).
A real leader understands that blaming someone else does little to solve the problem.

The president has a right to redecorate the Oval Office. That having been said, he should be honest about it and include the changes in the shoot, and he shouldn’t be president in the first place due to not having been born in the US.
Also, for those of you who say the economic crisis was caused by Bush, that’s a total crock. Democrats pushed for Fannie and Freddie to issue loads of subprime loans to their constituents; Democrats blocked legislation that would have forced banks to keep some amount of capital reserves on hand; and Democrats, most notably Obama, Hillary, and Dodd, received significant campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie. Democrats caused the problem, then they threw trillions of dollars down a black hole and blamed Bush for the whole thing.
Given, Bush is hardly a saint, but from an economic perspective, Obama is an order of magnitude worse.

Redecoration “approved during the Bush Administration”…BUT THE CONDITIONS HAVE CHANGED, haven’t they, since that approval?
THAT’s the thing that is irritating, that Obama in the Presidency woulnd’t have the decency (or wisdom) to cease t he spending now that he’s overspent the nation’s debt burden into near oblivion.
“Approved during the Bush Administration” but that was BEFORE Obama moved in and wrecked the ecoonomy as also engaged in seemingly perpetual spending and wastefulness and self-indulgence on other people’s money. He didn’t even have the senes to say, “wait on spending more for rugs, drapes and decorations that are not really necessary (now that I’ve run up the national debt to such a degree)”.
About the vacation (this latest one) being “paid for by friends” and the Obamas…so, fine, BUT THE TIME OFF in self-indulgence is the bothering point. He runs off to “vacation” and otherwise does not appear to have much of an idea or intent to do any more work in the Presidency other than to wreck the nation, then take another vacation.
People find his slumming (and his wife’s) to be utterly offensive. He fails to take actions that appear conscientious (or are conscientious) or responsible. Would it be so difficult for Obama to grow up and abandon his petulent teen years, just for the next, say, three years, until 2012 is over? Then he can return to his immature selfishness and lies all he wants to.
Posted by: AmericanCitizen | August 31, 2010, 2:45 am 2:45 am
Redecorating the Oval Office in these economic times is as insensitive and just plain “wacky” as, say, Nancy Pelosi’s spending taxpayer money on having fresh flowers brought in to her offices and the Congressional building. That and the “gourmet” “health food” in the Congressional cafeteria, just after she took office as Majority Leader (so-called).
It’s gratuitous, rather greedy, inconsiderate display use of the taxpayers’ money. it might represent (to them) small, meaningless amounts of money but therein lies the rub: it’s meaningful money to taxpayers and it is just rude, insensitive and mean behavior by Obama/Pelosi, whoever else in times when the taxpayers are struggling.
What acts like these do is show how out of touch or to what degree these politicians disregard the people whose money they are slathering themselves in.

Don’t you get it? Republican, Democrat, Independent, Moderate, Green Party, Tea Party, Boston Tea Party…doesn’t matter, there ALL IDIOTS!!!! And the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side!!!
Whichever party is in power ALWAYS blanks everything up, approval ratings go down, ultimately leading the vast majority of the American people voting for change?
Think about it? Carter out Reagan IN (Reagan was the exception), Bush 41 out Clinton IN, Clinton out Bush 43 IN, Bush 43 out Obama IN! Now most people want Obama out and a Conservative Republican back IN.
Again folks get real and realize that it’s a never ending cycle of the grass is greener on the other side! Has always been this way will always be this way!!

What do you do when you have financial troubles? You redecorate your house. After all, who cares that a leader is supposed to be an example, we have to restrain ourselves because we have nothing. He does not have that problem, if he needs money for a new carpet for the White House, he just print some more.
If we still have paper and ink, we still have money.

Here’s the truth of the matter, now that we can see what he does not what he speaks of … he is stupid and COLD, not cool.
Stupid … because obviously he doesn’t hear the cries of Americans who are hurting – and COLD because he doesn’t give a damn.

Seriously?
Listen up you bunch of whiny little complainers.
If you want to know who is to blame for our current situation go look in a mirror.
Or economic instability was caused by the removal of the Glassman Act that was put in place after the great depression. It was designed to keep banks stable by keeping them out of the speculation business.
It was repealed by a republican controlled congress when Clinton was president. They did it by overwhelming his veto power with a 2/3 majority.
It took less than 10 years for us to end up where we are now. ALL of you sat on your fat butts and let the government do what it wanted. Now all I see is a bunch of poorly educated half wits behaving with mob mentality.
Whats next? How long before you cross the line from blaming one person that you now call a muslim to talking about burning a cross or stringing someone up.
People like you make me sick. You want everything handed to you and you want to do NOTHING to make it better.
Get off your butts, go out and educate yourselves on what has happened in the past and get a clue on where we need to go.
Then direct your anger at the people living in 10 million dollar homes who made a killing bilking people out of their life savings and try and do something positive.

Hypocrites to the left of me and angry hypocrites to the right. The President always redesigns the Oval office to suit his taste. Interesting that the left was up in arms when Bush did it, but now they are so intellectually above everyone else that when we point out their hypocrisy, they say we are bigots or some other nasty claim. The fact is that Presidents have a budget, its approved by congress and any money they spend above and beyond that approved budget must also be approved. So if Obama went beyond his budget for the Guevara and Mao busts in the oval office, the congress had to approve the surplus spending. If that is the case then we can hold them responsible as well. Although these are the same people who pay off their aides student loans and hide embezzled money in their freezers. ALL THESE PEOPLE NEED TO GO. While we are at it, we ought to spend a little time exposing the vast network of George Soros socialist empathizers and get rid of them. They are causing this country a world of hurt. Ever since the Clinton administration our country has been attacked by psychotic liberals, its time to put an end to it.

King Obama the Narcissistic Buffoon is back from his sixth vacation of the year to continue his Summer of Wreckovery:
Earlier this month, first-time claims for unemployment hit a nine-month high. The unemployment rate remains at 9.5% and 18.4% of workers are out of a job, can only get part-time work, or have given up looking for a job altogether. Sales of existing homes dropped 27% from June to July, hitting the lowest point since data were first collected in 1999. The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index fell to 50.4 in July, continuing a slide that started in February. And the stock market is down 11% from its peak in April.
Unite, Americans…
It’s going to take every one of us to get the Obamas, unions and parasite “social justice” Democrats off of our backs and out of our wallets.

Hey MediaMatters, Bush HAD to redecorate. If you’ll be so kind as to recall, the Clintonistas destroyed the place on their departure. I don’t think that anyone begrudges the new first family for making some decorating changes, but being forced to redo the entire facility because of an out of control outgoing WH staff is a waste of money that never should of had to take place. As for the Obamas, this is wasteful and just another example of their disconnect and aloofness. They can’t help themselves when it comes to extravagance.

Spending taxpayers’ money for redecorating at this time is not defensible. Perhaps its necessity was also somewhat questionable when George Bush did it, but the country was not in a fiscal crisis at that time. At any rate, the argument that “Johnny did it too” is playground-level mentality and says a lot about the people pushing that argument.

Instead, they used their own money.”

Obama’s pretty much 99% bad, and that’s me being generous. And I’m suspicious of this sudden interest in decorating, especially given his appreciation of art being used as propaganda. I guess Obama can do whatever Bush did and that makes it okay. As a matter of fact, that seems to be his overall strategy. Take what Bush did and amplify it by 10 so that our great grand children will be paying for his fiscal irresponsibility.

No one would even make a big deal of this, if so many people weren’t out of work and collecting government benefits. When the first family moved in January 2008, the WH got their decorating budget like every other president and his family. And they spent their full budget allowance. They hired reknown designer Michael Smith and redecorated and included in the budget was the President’s office space that was ‘redecorated’ when he moved into the space, while all Bush’s personal items and office items were removed and redone. Only the drapes and the carpet were retained in the President’s office as the Obama’s exhausted their decorating budget in other WH rooms.
It would seem that extensive renovations and decorating of the East wing occurred for all the excessive new staff for FLOTUS, which exhausted their budget. Now while the economy suffers greatly, they think they should take 6 vacations in 8 months, and redecorate.
Clearly they send a vibe that is heartless and unconcerned about the people. Not too mention, that their budget allowance was already spent by them.

“Parasites”? From 2002 to 2007 the wealthiest 1% of American families hauled in 2/3 of our nation’s income gains.
“Social Justice”? At the same time, America’s poverty rolls increased from 32 Million to 40 Million.

Of all things I can think of to criticize this president over, redecorating the oval office is not one of them.
I imagine the rug Mrs. Bush designed will end up in President Bush’s library anyway. I remember touring LBJ’s library and the replica of his oval office was on display, right down to the rug on the floor.

Typical outrage over nothing. I’ve never seen so much scrutiny and made up outrage about a sitting President in my life. The right is now using the economy to voice really ridiculous arguments. I’ve traveled on vacation twice this summer. The airports are jam packed and both of my flights were full. My life hasn’t stopped because of the economy.I’m one of the fortunate that is still working and doing ok. I’m middle class and not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. After living through the recession of the eighties, I learned to always have a safety net, and I have my home paid for. So I’m much less effected by the economy than most. Though I spend more for healthcare and necessities like everyone else.I’m more mindful of my spending, but I’ve continued to vacation and shop. I like to think the President and First Lady are boosting the economy. The Whitehouse and Oval office are their home and they should feel free to decorate to their liking and comfort level. The talking heads have truely gone off the deep end with this one.

This isn’t a partisan issue, and compared to the speculatively irrecoverable depression that this country has fallen deeply into, the amount of money used to redecorate doesn’t really matter, regardless of who paid for it. Especially in this economic climate, it shows a lack of good sense. More than that, it reflects the epidemic departure from good values which is NOT confined to any political party. Consumerism, a grossly inflated sense of entitlement, greed, moral relativism, and the apparent abandonment of good sense are apparently the problems, all the way to the top…and it seems to be getting amplified down through the generations. Nice example for the nation, chief.

Were you aware that the new Oval Office carpet, wallpaper, and furniture was made in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania? Or that in keeping with history, funds for redecorating came from the President’s inaugural committee donations?
Taxes did not pay for the Oval Office redecoration, and it’s great to see the donations actively used to support American jobs.
The carpet is rimmed with quotes from Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, JFK and Martin Luther King Jr. The quotes include: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
So yes, this is nice example for the nation.

George “W” Bush HAD to redecorate the Oval Office. Remember, Brother Bill not only stained Monica’s dress but also the rug. Just get the “hebby-jebbies” thinking about that pig, Bill……

The one and only effort undertaken by the Obamas utilizing the private sector – or is the government taking over decorator fabrics, as well?

He spent millions on redecorating the Oval Office? What source told you that nonsense?
Let’s perpetuate that sense of righteous grievance, impending disaster, and disdain for “others” who don’t embrace Conservative orthodoxy.
