Rep. Kucinich Won’t Challenge Obama in Primary

Rep. Dennis Kucinich told me today that he will not challenge President Obama in the presidential primary and instead called for unity in the Democratic Party.

"I think what we have to do is focus on coming together for the purposes of getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan," the former presidential candidate said.

Gov. Ed Rendell acknowledged last month that Obama could face a primary challenge from the left after Pat Buchanan asked Rendell on MSNBC if an anti-war candidate could enter race. Rendell said it was "possible" but it "really depends on how far [Afghanistan] deteriorates."

Two days ago Obama’s press secretary Robert Gibbs angered the left when he told The Hill newspaper that people who compare Obama to Bush "ought to be drug tested" and they "wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president."

"I think that Mr. Gibbs and the White House need to realize that liberals support the president but the criticism is really a measure of hopes that have not been realized," Kucinich said.

"To try to paint as out of the mainstream people who want a full employment economy, people who want peace, people who want to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan, that is the mistake that Mr. Gibbs made," Kucinich told me.

When I asked the Congressman what more the President could do to please the left after pushing through health care, financial reform and a stimulus bill, Kucinich said until the administration addresses unemployment they will continue to hear from the liberals.

“We shouldn’t be capitulating to the Fed or Wall Street with this false notion that a certain amount of unemployment is necessary for the proper functioning of the economy,” Kucinich said. “We have to get America back to work. That is the key and central issue of all of this and in addition, if I might, don’t forget about getting out of Afghanistan and Iraq.”

I’ve watched GMA for as long as I can remember and loved it. But ever since George has been on it seems like half of the first segment is all about politics. I can switch to Morning Joe for that. Who cares what Robert Gibbs said about the “Professional Left”? I’ll wager that 80% of your viewers don’t even know who he was talking about. Why is this supposed to interest people who really tune into GMA for news that affects their daily lives? You used to do that better than anyone else.

While I am a strong Obama supporter, I find Robert Gibbs not to be an asset to Obama. I realize that they are good friends and he helped him during his run but he is not the most articulate press secretary and sometimes comes across as cocky. I think Obama needs someone more like Bob Woodword or the like. I doubt if he will replace him but I do think this job is getting to Gibbs and I truthfully understand his frustration because this president has passed more things in 18 months than any other recent president and he gets little or no credit for it. Yesterday he passed a bill to keep jobs here and yet there was no big coverage and today in my paper…(a republican state) there was a small paragraph about it…nothing more. Any other president would have at least front page. I get frustrated also. All these bill with no help from the republicans. This latest bill to save jobs for teachers and firemen had only 2 republican signatures and yet they say they are listening to the public. I doubt that…they are listening to their P.R men who they hired to help them think.

Why is anyone talking to Ed Rendell?

Posted by: ellsbells930 | August 12, 2010, 9:58 am 9:58 am

I think the Obama press secretary should be tested.

The left should be upset, everything he has done, is under performing and even liberals expect results. Passing more legislation is not a sign of progress if it is flawed legislation, and so far, the economy and job creation is non existant. Looks like he returned to the failed policies of the past..Jimmie Carters policies.. more and more debt and no results .. 2 years from how he will leave the country in worse shape than carter left for reagan. It goes to follow, the next president will be very successful because when he/she fixes all oboma’s screw ups, the ecomony will explode. Put a pro business president in and things will get better. So far 3.5 million jobs lost under his watch. Reagan created 19 million jobs (failed policies??) and even GW created 9 million jobs. so the only change I can believe in, is changing the leadership in this country, starting with Obama

When will Diane Sawyer start reporting news and stop doing dateline type interviews that are not really news? where is the ethics violation coverage, where is the states efforts to pass legislation on rejecting the mandatory healthcare coverage mandate? I now know why Fox news is number one in news! they actually tell you what is going on and it is fair and balanced like they say. ABC is fluff you see coming from junior staff

I don’t see what the big deal is about Gibb’s comments. Isn’t he correct? Aren’t progressives angry at Obama for not fighting for the public option? Haven’t they suggested he’s not liberal enough? Gibbs is entitled to his own opinion. His statements aren’t influential to the party in any way. And most of us are smart enough to separate others’ comments and ideas from our own. Basically, Gibbs’ comments have done nothing more than give the talking heads something to whine about, feign angry commentary, and try to boost their ratings. To suggest that liberals will throw a hissy fit and abandon the party is not only ridiculous, but a really stupid argument.

Auto workers, teachers, cops, fireman…..pretty obvious.

Posted by: LongT | August 12, 2010, 10:30 am 10:30 am

NO! Robert Gibbs did not anger the “left”. He angered the “extreme left”. When you the media throw around the term “left” you are not accounting for all of us moderates and independents “in the middle” who are not for exremists in “either” direction!

Posted by: CND FOX | August 12, 2010, 10:40 am 10:40 am

@ Long T and zap:
It is lovely the short and inexplicably twisted recollection of history Republicans and self-anointed “conservatives” have. Reagan created a bunch of jobs, sure, but they primarily ended up being overseas. Same with George Bush, Jr. Also, Reagan set us up for the Wall Street meltdown by instituting the utter degradation of the regulatory schemes that kept the greedy fools on Wall Street in check for nearly 40 years before his reign. GW further enhanced this degradation by placing incompetent individuals and breeding a culture of anti-regulation in our regulatory agencies. This is how you come to a massive economic collapse and also a drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
If Pres. Obama has a flaw, it is to placate the nonsensical notions of the self-anointed “right”. Government is a necessary part of a fair and just civil society. Even the Founding Fathers decided to scrap the Articles of Confederation in favor of the Constitution to institute a stronger federal government.
Why don’t you read a history book that isn’t written by Glen Beck for a change?

“Sam in Texas”…I can answer your last question you gave to “Long T and zap”…because it doesn’t fit their “small minded, simple, black and white” world that they choose to live in. The “bigger picture” is definitely not a big “talking point” in right wing ideology.

Posted by: Sam in Texas | Aug 12, 2010 10:47:27 AM+++Because the Progressives version of history has more flaws in it than Becks version.

I think Obama should be tested…he’s an admitted user and acts as though he is still using. Dictators and dictator wantabes historically have drug problems.

Posted by: bluemingvase | August 12, 2010, 11:27 am 11:27 am

The media has long identified a ‘far right’ faction among the Republican party and today it is only fair that Gibbs and others are now admitting that the Democrats have their share of wackos, too…..There is a sane and reasonable position to take and it somewhat in the middle where an individual can sincerely be conservative on some issues and liberal on others.

Posted by: Munster42 | August 12, 2010, 11:28 am 11:28 am

Democrats have to be embarassed by voting for Obama in 2008 and they owe us “real” Americans an apology for electing Obama, who was not vetted (no one knows his true nationality) and no investigation was ever done of the $100 million Obama got from overseas (Iran?).

“bo diddly, bluemingvase and Tom Meyers”…LOL…LOL…You guys just keep up your “good blogging work”…please, will you? You are just solidifying your “right wing positions” and chasing away independents and moderates who know better. And guess which way they are going to vote? LOL…LOL

Obama is a creature of the DLC (the Corporatist Wing of the Democratic Party). The DLC has long been antagonistic toward the liberal wing of the party. Gibbs is just saying what they think. Rahm Emanual, a central DLC figure, has said similar things in more colorful language. This battle has been going on since at least the 70s when the Democrats split between the progressive sentiments arising out of the 60s and the corporate friendly faction that believes playing to big corporate interests is the only way to win.

“sergesret”…LOL…LOL…I am not “positive” but I think you got your parties “confused with reality”. LOL…LOL “Big Corporate Interests” understand perfectly well which “Party” to lobby for their greedy self-interests”. And for the past two years we have seen “plenty” of evidence of that. You know…the “Party of NO and Obstruction”. LOL…LOL

he didn’t win the nomination last time, and is highly unlikely to do so next time.

Ed – Life is not fair and this government has gone way beyond what the constitution laid out. Ever heard of personal responsibility??? there are some things the government should do – military, highways, financial oversight-(not control), defense of our borders. the states should be left to handle the rest.

I’m not into the war, and I think Obama has realized there is no easy answer to what is going on. It’s not as easy, as walking away, and having everything our soldiers have died for disappear, while our many more of our supporters in Iraq, and Aphganistan, are murdered by the people we were trying to fight. Like many other problems; it’s just not that easy.

NO “MJ” you are wrong. We have 50 friggin States and their MUST be consistency in laws, rules and regulations whenever you choose to live and/or visit there. And you “tradtionalists and constitutionalists” need to WAKE UP!

Dennis is right. And he was quite statesmanlike in how he said it. Myself, I’d have said that Gibbs and the White House are the ones in need of drug tests.

“CND FOX” – Let me clear it up a bit then since it’s you that seem a tad confused. The Corporate Interests lobby both parties. On the GOP side they are pretty much all on board. On the Dem side you’ve got the DLC/Blue Dogs/etc and the New Deal/Progressive/etc. If you educate yourself about the DLC you’ll see that they are very much about the Corporatist agenda. They are basically GOP-lite, actively anti-Progressive and have been the dominant force in the Dem party for 40 years. So what do you think, the Dems are one big happy liberal monolith? I’d check again if I were you.

Message to Tom Meyere: Real Americans work together no matter what party wins. For a party to become a party of No just because they lost and make this claim the second week of Obama’s administration is riduculous. Any party that holds up a jobs bill and a small business bill for months is not the American party I knew. People are hurting and these bills are necessary. Don’t give me the baloney about fiscal responsibility because the republicans had no fiscal responsibility for 8 yrs and that is why we are in a recession and they are refusing to take part in helping it get solved. Also, any party that refused to pass a bill that will give aide to those people who are now suffering from smoke inhalation from the 9/11 bombings is REALLY UN AMERICAN. Those people who ran in did not stop to ask are you rep/or dem. they just did the best they could and now one part of American is refusing to give them some aide with their medical bills. Don’t give me the baloney about being American…because you don’t have a leg to stand on on this susbject.

Stop hating. Start loving — your country; your fellow countrymen and women, even when they disagree with you; your president, even if you didn’t vote for him. Our leaders need our prayers and support, and yes, our criticism, if constructive, organized and free of self interests. Jobs would be created if everyone on the left and right would ratchet down their ideologies a little. Balance is at the center, where cooler heads prevail. What the market needs to produce more jobs and a stronger economy is confidence. To that end, those who rail against every move the president makes for purely political motives, are doing more to undermine America than they obviously know.

Agree Bloomingvase: Beck can’t even gets facts out of the Bible correct. To think he has a following boggles my mind but let’s face it…some people just like to hear bad things about government, the president, the economy, etc. When people are unhappy..instead of checking facts and thinking for themselves..they let a nut like Beck say things and they agree with it. Too bad…there are a lot of good people out there to lisen to but they are not on Fox. They have one agenda…get Obama…I am a senior citizen and I have never seen any one station do a number on anyone like this one. It is the mouthpiece for the republicans who cannot stand up for themselves or come up with an idea or a plan without a P.R. guy telling them what to say.

Posted by: talmag | August 12, 2010, 7:39 pm 7:39 pm

While we hear daily how the Dems will lose this election on the economy, there is little to no analysis on the divisive intolerance & fearmongering of GOP 2010 and their surrogate Tea Party, which is now stockpiling suspect candidates-on-ballot.
Is this really a winner? I suspect that almost every minority voter and at least half of caucasian ones, are leaving the tent over it.

Posted by: Mike W | August 12, 2010, 8:23 pm 8:23 pm

“sergesret”…I am not “confused” at all. But I (unlike the dumbed down constituency you are preaching to) will not buy the “red herring” of Democrats who are part of the “corpratocracy”. We can eventually seperate those from the “main herd” but first we have to take on the MAIN HERD. And if you don’t think myself and other moderates haven’t been paying attention to the GOP when they allow virtually NO DISSENT when the wealthy corporate interests are at stake…well then you’ve got another thing comin’!

Posted by: CND FOX | August 12, 2010, 9:27 pm 9:27 pm

Let’s get real. Nobody in the government has the power to spur the economy, at least not very much. Money can be spent to only temporarily bolster trade and jobs. The government cannot create demand for goods and services. We, the people, have to do that. Don’t expect for the government to magically make jobs appear. Any candidate, no matter which party, who says he or she can is not telling the truth.

somebody needs to challenge him before he and his minions completely destroy this country!!!!!

Posted by: mj | August 13, 2010, 7:43 am 7:43 am

“CND FOX” – Well I sure hope moderates are paying attention that the GOP is way off the deep end. Compared to the weak positive steps the Dems have taken, if they were currently in power, we’d be sailing down the cliff wall toward the big splat with ever increasing speed. However, the fundamental problem is that the center of power in the Dem party is ‘center/right’ and has been since McGovern and Mondale failed running to the left of center. You are correct that they are the minority. However, they have the money and the bullhorn, thanks in large part to their corporate donations and connections which, sadly, are the life blood of modern American politics. It’s going to be very hard to overcome them, just look at what happened with the Blanche Lincoln race this cycle. IMHO, a big part of the problem is the two party system which suppresses 3rd party bids and, when a 3rd party is present, perverts the results giving the win to the opposite end of the political scale. It’s put them in the position of saying, with some truth, wadda ya gonna do vote against us or not vote and install a Republican? It’s a pretty grim state of affairs leading to the destruction of the middle class and the planetary environment. I really do hope the ‘main herd’ can be convinced not to be complicit in it’s own degradation, but part of the plan has been a systematic suppression of real political discourse. With a nod to the host of this page, ABC, I really do try to watch ‘This Week’ and the other shows every Sunday but I am usually disgusted the almost complete lack of moderate left of center voices in the roundtable choices. I hope I’m wrong but I’m afraid Churchill was right when he said “Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing…after they have tried everything else.” It’s just that we’ve been lucky so far, and this time the right thing may come too late.

Posted by: sergesret | August 13, 2010, 11:35 am 11:35 am

Now the thing is Dennis could have won the primaries too and I was so hoping he would run, well I will just write in Kucinich/Paul.

George,
Watch GMA every morning, I have it taped just in case I wake up late. This morning you’re reporting on the story of the Mosque at Ground Zero and the Nancy Pelosi comment about the people that were in opposition to the Mosque and supporting an investigation as to where the money is coming from to fund this opposition. Why did you cover all this up with Dana Perino and Bill Kristol being the people that are ginning up this opposition? WHAT ABOUT HARRY REID???? DID YOU FORGET ABOUT HIM? He along with a number of Democrats has came out in opposition to this Mosque, is she going to start an investigation about Harry Reid’s involvement and where he is getting his money? You need to take another look at this story.
