Obama Says Pastor’s Plan to Burn Koran is a “Stunt” that Could be a “Recruitment Bonanza for Al Qaeda”
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: President Obama says that Florida Pastor Terry Jones’s proposal to burn copies of the Koran on September 11th is “completely contrary to our values of Americans,” a “destructive act” that could engager US troops. Noting that the county has been built on religious freedom and religious tolerance, President Obama told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that the plan amounts to a stunt. “As commander of chief of the Armed Forces of the United States I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women in uniform who are in Iraq, who are in Afghanistan.”
The president said that it could be a “recruitment bonanza for Al Qaeda,” and hopes that Jones, who says he is motivated by faith, “listens to those better angels,” as he prays about whether to proceed on Saturday with his plan. “Now, on the other hand, we are a government of laws,” Obama added, “And so, we have to abide by those laws. And my understanding is that he can be cited for public burning. But that’s the extent of the laws that we have available to us. You know, part of this country’s history is people doing destructive or offensive or harmful things. And yet, we still have to make sure that we’re following the laws.” Read President Obama’s full interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. -Sunlen Miller

This book burning event can be used as an opportunity to turn enemies into friends. Instead of burning the holy book, the Pastor should recite a few passages from the Koran, it would pacify Islamic extremists who were hoping to become suicide bombers. The Pastor could then become a goodwill ambassador for the US government reciting phrases from the Koran in the villages of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I am not in favor of the burning of the Koran, BUT, why is the press advertising this? No one would have even known about is except 30 people that go to the church if the press didn’t make it headline news for over a week. When the Fort Hood shooter MURDERED soldiers he said, “let’s not rush to judgement” but when a loony tune wants to burn a Koran, it is a “recruitment bonanza for Al Qauda.” The Imam was on CNN last night and said if the Mosque is not built at the site in New York, there will be backlash from Muslims. Our National Security depends on how this is handled. Sounds like a threat.

“I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women in uniform who are in Iraq, who are in Afghanistan.”
Because up until now they were not in harm’s way. One wonders what could have possibly caused Al Queda to hate us in the first place because up until now there have been no Koran burnings. Yet they still want to kill us for our tolerance of all religions.

I don’t like the idea of the ground zero mosque, but I really couldn’t care less if moves forward and is built because that freedom is what our country is built upon. For the same reason, I don’t care about this Koran buring. It is a stunt and for the President to speak about it brings much more attention to it than it deserves. Those who would react violently to such a stunt already hate us for the freedoms we hold dear.
I do believe this act is showing the blatant hypocrisy in some reactions to Islam vis a vis other religions. When you consider the P*ss christ and the virgin mary statue of elephant dung were considered works of art however insulting they were to christians. I think this pastor should be more creative in his destruction of the Koran considering the history of book burnings and what that represented, but so be it. I’m curious if he will still go through with it.

I wonder why Obama didn’t say that building a The Ground Zero Mosque is a “Stunt” that could be a “Recruitment Bonanza for the Anti-Muslim Movement”.

Would there be this outcry over “Mein Kampf.”?
No difference.
Both books are the ravings of an extremely dangerous lunatic. That there may be some statements of selfless ethics in the Koran is totally negated by the monumental thrust of the book that to be like Muhammed is to attack the world with a bloodlust if the infidels don’t submit after a warning.
The Koran is a criminal’s confession to a life of unabated murder, thievery, perversion, hedonism, and deception.
A demonstration of disdain and disgust for this book is a statement of standing firm on the battle line in support of everything the Koran is against -liberty, quest for knowledge, moral values, etc.
Also, I find the government’s interference in this man’s plans extremely dangerous, a direct violation of rights to free speech. The intent of which is obviously to blame Islam murders in the aftermath on this one individual rather than failed government policies.
If the plan is to refrain from “provoking” the lunatic’s followers, then that is direct apposition to the policies of the government It should have stayed the heck out of the MIddle East. It has no case of “restraint” to make.
Killings of course will follow in the aftermath regardless and totally irrespective of his actions or the government’s actions.
Again Muhammed grovelers don’t need an excuse.

I do understand why people are upset about this. I have one question that I want answered. Why in America are we tolerant of all religions, but Muslims in the Muslim world have no tolerance for any religion but their own? They need to learn the true meaning of TOLERANCE. We have done it here for years.
Posted by: jim | September 9, 2010, 10:40 am 10:40 am
this issue is hilarious. People always protest, pontificate, criticize, and wring their hands over symbolic gestures. Whether it is a nut burning a koran, a hippie burning a flag, a deviant putting a cross in his urine, moslems building victory mosques, etc. Where are the Hollywood stars, the President, the press when certain groups burn actual PEOPLE, not books? Why not protest when acid is thrown in faces of schoolgirls because they want to learn? Or someone is stoned because they have sex? Or a bus is blown up? Or they kill their own daughters because of “shame”? But when a book is threatened to be burnt everyone gets upset? Funny.

I do not agree with the burning but not because I am worried about upsetting Muslims I mean hell they have never worried about upsetting us. I am against it because I believe we should be more civilized than they to many of them have shown to be. I could care less about their sensibilities they certainly care less about ours as demonstrated by their trying to build a Mosque at or near ground zero. My only concern is our turning to be hateful creatures like some of them are. This is all wrong but our leaders never get this worried or upset when some idiot burns the American flag do they. Are we forever suppose to cower to the intimidation of the Muslim threats of violence if we offend them? Screw their sensibilities and when they stand up for woman’s rights, and when they stand up against the terrorist and when they stand up for America I will stand with them until then I really do not care about their sensibilities or their threats and I am disgusted at our leaders for being afraid of their threats of violence. I say if one American is killed because of this kill 1000 of them and keep doing it until they learn they are not special with special privileges and they must be humans like the rest of the world they do not get to be special. They burn bibles, our flags drag our troops through the streets hang them cut their heads off so I say if one person dies from their threats of violence 1000 of them die. Freedom of speech is what America is about I do not care if I agree with the speech or not as I do not agree with this burning but I do agree he or anyone else has a right to do it and so does the supreme court because they allow the burning of our Flag.
Posted by: Wade Johnson | September 9, 2010, 10:54 am 10:54 am
@Jim – I agree, they should learn tolerance, but remember, there are verses in the Koran that demands infidels be killed. If they burn a Bible or Bhagavad-Gita, no Christian or Hindu will strap explosives to themselves and attempt to kill innocent people, but a Muslim will. That’s the reality.
Posted by: Gerald | September 9, 2010, 10:56 am 10:56 am
Robin Roberts says ” Because he has the right to burn the koran doesn’t mean he should do it”. This is exactly what everyone has been saying about Park 51 Mosque. But Robin doesn’t have that same point of view. She wants us to give in to the “wishes” of islam. She is a mouth piece for the Obama administration. She has no credibility. How about her going on TV and telling Muslims to stop killing us and stop burning our flags because we are Christians. She should tell them it makes us angry and could have a backlash on world peace.

In what bizzaro universe is building an Islamic community center in a place where you own the land the moral equivalent of burning somebody else’s holiest book? The fascists in this country have gone completely insane – and it’s time to start calling American fascists by their rightful name. Burning Korans is directly intended to offend your targets. That’s the whole reason for doing it. The Imam had no idea the fascists were going to go nuts on him and make his building an issue. he thought he was in America, where property rights and religious freedom are supposedly honored.
Posted by: nomo stew | September 9, 2010, 11:09 am 11:09 am
Nomo Stew- Really calling them Facist?
Example-The Imam knew that would outrage people to build a Mosque and he is going to do it anyway. The Preacher knows its going to anger Muslims for burning the Koran, and he will do it anyway.
The Problem that the majority of America has is that they have to be careful what they say to and about Muslims, but Muslims dont have to be politically correct in dealing with any other religions. That attitude needs to change.

It is the problem of the media which has over-reported the intent of the paster of an unsucceseful small church in Florida. Last November, the media has under-reported the shooting of Ft Hood by refusiing to point out immediately the killer was an Islamic extremist and a terrorist.

me2010- People know that there are Muslims in the US, they know that. Here is what America is tired of:
1. Christian cant wear their cross necklace or errings to work because it can offend people. Muslim wears their headscarf to work and its ok because we cant discriminate.
2. Woman sues Florida because they made her uncover her face to take a drivers license picture. she wins and does not have to uncover face. Man kicked out of DMV and license suspended because he would not take off his hat for picture.
3. Bible cant be used in classroom(seperation of church and state. Koran is ok to use because it is a Historical document. What a bunch of Crap.
this is just 3 examples that I have seen. I am sure there are many more. Muslims need to be tolerant it is a 2 way street here.

“President Obama says that New York Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s proposal to build a mosque on the September 11th Ground Zero site is “completely contrary to our values of Americans…”
The above crude substitution illustrates why President Obama has lost any credibility as a moral arbiter, whether about mosque sites, stupid Cambridge police, or book burning. Such pronouncements are unfortunately above his pay grade.
Now that the MSM is strangely treating Sarah Palin’s comments about this with respect, maybe it’s time for President GW Bush to weigh in.

A church in Gainesville, FL with 50 members has gained international prominence – WHY?
No one would have heard of this group if the story wasn’t being flogged by the MSM. – WHY?
The State Department, Defense Department, Justice Department, Sec’y of State, Sec’y of Defense, Attorney General, WH Press spokesman, and now the President of the U.S. has felt the need to comment on the future actions of a small-time, looney-tune in Florida. – WHY?
Is the U.S. government and the Mainstream Media so afraid of Muslims burning flags, shouting death to America, and rioting in far away countries – WHY? Muslims in foreign lands have been burning-shouting-rioting-killing over every slight, real or imagined, since 1967. – WHAT IS DIFFERENT THIS TIME?
I have no idea why the administration and the media are so wound up over this nothing event, but I suspect it has more to do with demeaning Christians than defending the tender sensibilities of the world’s Muslims.

I’ve been watching in the news regarding this pastor wanting to burn copies of the Quran. How absolutely absurd and ungodly is this? Jesus would never do something like this! Instead, He would try and do what He could to bring them to Himself. What good will it do? It will only cause MORE animosity. Yes, God is a God of justice, vengeance, and so on. But He’s a God of Love. He IS Love! And He also LOVES Muslims. We don’t conform, we INFORM. We witness, we do what God would do, and it’s not burning their “bible”!!! It’s no different if they were to burn copies of God’s Bible. The Quran means a lot to these people. It’s what they believe in. We can’t reach the lost by doing things that will deliberately hurt them or make them angry! Hello?! What is this pastor thinking? I’m sorry, but he said he’s “praying” about whether or not to do this, but as far as I’m concerned, no prayer could possibly condone his behavior. And I have to question his prayer, anyway! I have a feeling he’s saying he’s praying about it, to justify what he’s doing. I think he’s trying to get people to think he prayed, and that God said, yeah sure. Go ahead. Burn these books, and crush the hearts of the Muslims. I know this is a free country, and we can do things that we want to do, but at what cost?? There will be repercussions. We have troops overseas to consider. Our safety here, as well.

I’ve put some thought into this.
Honestly, the question is not “To burn?” or “Not to burn?”. The TRUE question is one of equal representation. Therefore, to be as politically correct as possible, I propose that Pastor Jones simultaneously burns a copy of both the Bible and the Qur’an, thus creating a level of outrage that can be enjoyed by Christians and Muslims alike. The only down side I see is that died in the wool atheists have been omitted from the festivities – my apologies!

What amendment?
Here’s how the GOP described this bill for 9/11 workers.
“Republicans continue to believe that those who responded to the [World Trade Center] attack should get the treatment and liability protection they need because they dutifully answered a call for help,” the policy statement reads.
But this bill, according to Republicans, “creates a massive new entitlement program, exposes taxpayers to increased litigation and is ‘paid for’ with tax increases and potential job losses.”
The GOP stiffed 9/11 workers because they didn’t want to tax foreign companies or be seen creating an entitlement program.

Oh really Obama? If you really thought that Islam was a religion of peace you wouldn’t find yourself saying these words. When Christians in Gaza were attacked in June 2007, their property ransacked, looted, and destroyed, there was absolutely no provocation – or retaliation. In fact the attack was a celebration by Muslim extremists: according to an AP report: “After defeating their rivals in Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement, Muslim extremists are focusing their attacks on Christians in Gaza City. Christians in Gaza City have issued an appeal to the international community and a plea for protection against the increased attacks by Muslim extremists.”
The celebration in 2007 by trespassing, burning, destroying, looting, Christian Churches is far worse than a guy in the south burning his own korans on his own property. The AP report continued:
“the Muslim gunmen used rocket-propeled grenades (RPGs) to blow through the doors of the church and school, before burning Bibles and destroying every cross they could get their hands on.”

If you want to know how someone may respond to their particular holy book being burned – look inside it.
