Elmo to Katy Perry: ‘We’ll Have Another Play Date’
We had some fun with a story that’s burning up YouTube this morning on "GMA."
Elmo’s play date with Katy Perry may have been cut short by Sesame Street’s producers, but it’s gotten more than a million hits on YouTube. And Elmo told me today that he wants to sing with Perry again.
“We’ll have another one. Elmo loves Ms. Katy and we had a good time,” Elmo told me. “So we’ll have another play date.”
He also signed an autograph for my 5 year old, Harper, so I’m a hero at home.

Katy was wearing the same outfits Miss Piggy wears. Whats the difference. Maybe Miss Piggy should be looked at.

I am the mom of three, and I see nothing wrong with the video! It was really cute and I love the way she changed up her song just for Elmo.
I don’t see anything wrong with her outfit…but couldn’t the Sesame Street people have changed her outfit BEFORE the segment was filmed? Kinda stupid to cut it because of her outfit choice. It isn’t like Katy went and committed a crime after the taping!
Sorry Katy, people are just stupid. Save this video, your kids will LOVE it one day! :)

I don’t see what’s the fuss all about My boy loves it and its no different than the rest of the people. Just becouse it’s Katy Perry c’mon guys.

Oh for God’s sake! I think censorship has gone just the teensiest bit overboard with this. Little kids are NOT going to look at this clip and think “WOO HOO…Katy Perry’s almost naked!!” What a bunch of idiots. In another article it said that there was “…an outcry from parents.” Really?? Why do I have the feeling that these are the same parents that think the Ninja Turtles are evil and Bugs Bunny cartoons are the reason for the demise of a civilized society. Makes you want to slap them all silly.

Would it have killed her to cover up the girls? I saw the video and didn’t think it’s especially racy or inappropriate at all. But what would possess Katy Perry to think a bunch of little kids want or need to see that much of her boobs? Know your audience!
Posted by: Zinglesloff | September 24, 2010, 9:40 am 9:40 am
I am disappointed. I thought Sesame Street was something I could trust my kids to watch while I wasn’t in the room. The producers of Sesame Street should not be in charge if they are that desensitized that they need parents to tell them that her dress was inappropriate for children. The producer stated that no one even questioned the attire. And you, people, think that you provide good education for our children. If a teacher came to school dressed that way, she would be fired and rightfully so.

Kids see a lot more cleavage at the swimming pool or beach.

I just saw the Victoria Secret commercial and Katy had far more clothing on than any of those models. The kids are viewing those commercials, too, so what’s the problem…I thought she was rather cute and Elmo didn’t seem to judge…3 year olds are honest!!!

I’m sorry but I don’t see it. Her breast are small and not offensive at all. Maybe it’s me because I have huge cleavage which I keep covered, so I know cleavage and this is nothing. Much ado about nothing.

Are you people blind? Has Lady GaGa, Beyonce, even Britney Spears desensitized everyone to a properly dressed woman? Heck yea that dress was over the top! For a KIDS SHOW? What have we degraded ourselves to??

I watched this video a few days before it became headlines in the news and as a mother of two young children, it wasnt her clothes that bothered me in the video, but the way she chased Elmo around trying to get him to play with her. I am raising my kids to have more self-respect than that. I tell my kids that if someone doesnt want to play with you, find someone else who will. They should play with kids who appreciate and are good to them. What I see in the Katy Perry/Elmo video is a girl who is just too desperate to play and the whole “tag” excuse at the end of the video just didnt work for me.

Some parents don’t allow their children to watch regular T.V. channels, so the argument about V.S. commercials is irrelevant. When I turn on PBS and Sesame street is on, I expect age appropriate modesty. Her dress was not that. Children are bombarded with sexual images and immodest clothing in a lot of areas that we can not control, Sesame street should not be one of them.
Posted by: Amanda | September 24, 2010, 10:12 am 10:12 am
Do the kids that watch Elmo watch the Olympics? How about The Muppet Show? Or Victoria Secret commercials? The Super Bowl? TV at ALL???? I think this has gone too far! It’s just like when they decided to make C stand for carrot not cookie! I have seen Mom’s show more then Katy did!
Posted by: Lorie | September 24, 2010, 10:12 am 10:12 am
I think they did the right thing. I think they had a valid point for pulling the segment, and just because kids see women who dress inappropriately (I won’t use what I think they dress like) outside and at the pool doesn’t mean they should be throwing that kind of image on Sesame Street which is a CHILDREN’S PROGRAM! And for those who say censorship has gone overboard, if you watch over half the TV shows AND commercials out there, you can see that producers get away with a lot of smut now a days, so that isn’t even a valid argument. All Katy had to do was wear an outfit that was less revealing, and they even said that they wanted to do another segment with her so I don’t see what the big issue is. Personally, I wouldn’t want my child or my niece or nephew’s viewing her cleavage on Sesame St. Way to go to the executive producer who made the decision to cut it, thanks for listening to what the parents are saying.

Silliness seems perversive in today’s world.
Parents object to a bustier……but turn right around and allow viewing of violence, murder, and mayhem.
American values are absolutely laughable.

I thought this video was a joke. My kids watch Sesame Street every day, and it looks nothing like something they would air on the show. I find it hard to believe they would even allow her on the set dressed like that. What was she even wearing? For Katy to be running around after Elmo to “play” was just silly. I know kids aren’t going to read anything into the cleavage and innuendo but please, this video was never meant to air on Sesame Street!

Miss Piggy is a puppet and a pig – you can hardly compare her to Katy Perry. I think the SS producers were asleep on this one and dropped the ball. SS SHOULD be a show your child can watch without the parent in the room. Parents can and do restrict what their children watch on TV, so to say, “What’s the big deal? There is worse out there on the tube?” is inapropriate. My neices watch PBS and Nick JR and appropriate and select DVDs. Seeing any inappropriately dressed female on SS would be a first for them and they might not go, “Hey, Mom, I can almost see her boobs!”, but on a subconscious level they would know that something isn’t right in Elmo land. Parents are right to complain and I’m glad that SS heard them and responded as they did. I have seen Katy Perry with cupcake boobs and also with regular clothes that are modest – she should know what is okay to wear around children and what is not.

It’s so laughable that Perry, who sneered and snarled and glared at Lady Gaga’s outfits when the latter took every VMA award that Perry was up for, that same snippy snotty pop tart got thrown off Sesame Street for her inappropriate outfit.
It’s also sad that this pop tart has no sense of what is appropriate for pre-schoolers. Someone should have told her to change her clothes because there wouldn’t be any drooling fanboys watching a show produced for young children.
Posted by: windrider2 | September 24, 2010, 11:13 am 11:13 am
I have no problem with this video and I am so outraged that something like this would get pulled. The show is for PRE-SCHOOL not for 8 year olds. I am so upset I went on all the Youtube Clips and commented and also went to KATY PERY on Twitter and told her how upset I am…. HOW dare parents say something over something so little… my daughter loved it and now she’s sad cause she won’t be able to see it on TV
Posted by: Fran | September 24, 2010, 11:39 am 11:39 am
It’s so reassuring that there are so many people who know what is and isn’t appropriate, not just for their child, but for every child. I’m sure the parents who feel there was nothing wrong with Katy’s outfit are grateful to be corrected in their error by people who are better than they are at parenting and life in general. Perhaps for her next appearance, Katy might wear a burkha. I’m sure that would make the defenders of modesty pleased.

I am really amazed that some of the people making comments are allowed to raise kids. If this is offensive, you obviously have never been to a walmart. Lighten up people, kids don’t see any issue with it. If you think they do, continue to shelter your kids from the world today so they can grow up an outsider, ill prepared to communicate with others. I hope you made space in your basement for your kid to live until they are 30.

Gee, have we all forgot Miss Piggy and her sexy clothes that our children watched during the 70′s 80′s, 90′s and now? Stop back tracking to make yourselves decent. Miss Piggy is proably one of the most naked cartoon characters next to the Simpsons and Family Guy. Oh Simpsons is OK cause it teaches children disrespect. Let’s keep Simpsons on for the next generation to be ruined!
Oh forgot make sure your kids stay up and watch South Park or American Dad to really get the scoop on naked and decent.
Posted by: BCMichals | September 24, 2010, 1:11 pm 1:11 pm
Really, what is the problem. One user comment says it is in appropriate for her to chase Elmo, does it always have to be about sex? Couldn’t it be possible that she, being on a kids show is just *gasp* playing a game. Maybe if society didn’t coddle our children and hide them away from these things there would be no reason to get offended over it. Yes, I do have two children, I let them watch it. I am, however, intelligent and responsible enough to not let my children watch pornography. Fight the big issues, drugs, corruption, etc.
Posted by: Tim | September 24, 2010, 1:28 pm 1:28 pm
First of all, yes her clothes in the video are inappropriate. Maybe some parents do not think this it is, but a lot of them do. That alone should be enough for ending it there.
And besides the clothes: I just don’t understand why out of all the celebrities out there, SHE was asked to be on what is supposed to be a respectable kids show. She is not exactly someone I would want my daughter to think of as a role model. Just because a child doesn’t know about her songs, or just because they do not understand her inappropriate way of dressing, doesn’t make it okay. It’s like saying “Oh my kid is never going to actually own a gun anytime soon, so it’s ok for him to watch a crude and bloody movie”. Wouldn’t you shield your child from that? So what’s the difference.
I think it was a very poor choice to invite her on the show.

I think that most of you are missing the point here. Ms. Perry’s cleavage is a non-issue. If you want to expose your children to women’s breasts so that in your mind they become more “worldy”, it is your prerogative.
The real issue that should be discussed is what she (and other pop stars) has or has not done to warrant face time with the smallest and most impressionable people in our society? How badly are our children are becoming victims of targeted marketing at tender age? This marketing, whether on PBS, Nick Jr. or Noggin effects everything from our children’s consumption trends to attitude and dress. That is the ALARMING issue.
Ms. Perry is a mouthpiece for Capitol Records and EMI. She represents their best interest in performance and attire. ABC is owned by the Disney Corporation. EMI and Disney have many cross-promotional contracts. Do you not once wonder why ABC recruited anchor George Stephanopoulos to write a puff piece on a very, very silly issue?
They are laughing all the way to the bank whilst we argue our hearts out over private, personal convictions. What is wrong with this picture?

I agree that our kids do see women dressed in less at the beach,I knew that their were small minded parents out there who would get offended but they need to get their panties out of the bunch, and realize that there is alot worse out there. My 4 yr old loves Katy Perry and if you go to the right websites they are censored so the parent can feel comfortable with what the kids watch and wont see more then they should.I just dont see what the big deal is!I have seen and heard alot worse on Nick, and Disney and those are for kids too.

I personally think Katy is a trampy bad example for little girls… I’m tired of all the pop stars dressing trampy and singing songs with sexual connotations. A lot of parents may think that the connotations go over their kids heads but as a mother of three children who are all very open with me about their opinions and feelings I can tell you that they are understanding much of what we may think (or hope) they aren’t.

I do child care and yes my 8 year olds did notice especially the boys .Its not just little toddlers who watch this show .Why does everything have to be so sexual in the media these days? The problem is that people are becoming decensitised/sp? to whats wrong from right and appropriate. If it wasnt good back in the day then it should still be not good for this day even if things are changing .

My first thought to the cleavage controversy was: consider the audience. This show is for kids who might not even realize the difference between boys and girls yet. To most of these kids, breasts are seen as a source of food. Did they pull the spot over concerns about childhood obesity?

“My first thought to the cleavage controversy was: consider the audience. This show is for kids who might not even realize the difference between boys and girls yet. To most of these kids, breasts are seen as a source of food. Did they pull the spot over concerns about childhood obesity?”
YES! My thoughts *exactly*.
Personally, I’d like to believe the video was pulled because Katy was too desperate for Elmo to play with her. That is kind of lame. If Elmo doesn’t want to play, go find someone else to play with!
I also agree the dress isn’t what I feel is appropriate for a kid’s show, but the kids certainly aren’t going to notice. It’s a cultural thing (as you can see from the responses). I’m 24, and people my age are used to this kind of nudity. In fact, girls my age wear *gasp* string bikinis to the pools/beach! So, if you want to keep your kids from seeing people in their underwear (Or what essentially could be their underwear), don’t take them anywhere anyone could possibly be in a bathing suit!
As for the people saying this outfit is “immoral” and “wrong,” that’s a cultural/generational standpoint. Consider this, in my mother’s time, she would’ve sent home from school for “inappropriate dress” for daring to show her shoulders. These days, we don’t even give a second thought to anyone showing their shoulders.
I agree that we really hear too much about idiotic pop stars, but the producer even mentioned they put such pop stars *on* Sesame Street” in hopes to attract teen parents, in hopes to educate said parents (too late!) along with their kids.
Personally, I think if this country *allowed* condom commercials, maybe we wouldn’t have so many teen parents. Or you know, if parents just parented more responsibly and *talked* to their kids about sex (safe sex, the importance of waiting, being picky about romantic partners, etc), instead of pretending it didn’t exist (looking at you, Sarah Palin!), then perhaps we wouldn’t have so many teen parents, and Sesame Street wouldn’t feel the need to try to cater towards them and help them get more educated (good luck. In my experience people my age don’t give two shoots about spelling).

i guess its ok to show cheerleaders boobs and butt cheeks,or half naked people in every TV show. I hate to say this to parents and don’t let it out of the bag but boys know about girls. When my son came home from pre-school he sat on the sofa so sad I asked him if he had a bad day at pre-school and he shook his little head and siad “No! Daddy it’s just my girlfriend has no boobs”. At that point I turned it over to his mom. Boys are going to be looking at boobs all their lives so get a life just reach them how to RESPECT eachother as people and they will. But its your job not the TV’s or the governments its yours and only yours as parents.

Parents blame TV on everything from Rape to murder to incest to other things. But the truth is it is up to the parents no one else if your kids turns out bad its your fault not that TV. Those parents that blame TV for their kids are parents that didn’t care in the first place and didnt want to be bothered. They are failures as parents admit it.

I think that it is so crazy for this to be pulled. She is wearing alot more clothes than alot of the Mama wear now a days. Kids are not looking at her clothes and if someones else is paying it that much attention they should not be watching a kids show anyway. I also bet the same parents that are complaining watch her videoes on Vh1 and she has on a cloud in that video just a cloud. So get over it.

This isn’t about the video. It is about Katy Perry and the image that she puts out there. Do we want our kids to see this, and start looking for Katy Perry in her slutty CD Cover. When my son sees a Thomas the Tank cover he gets so excited. I’m not interested in him freaking out for trashy Katy Perry at this age.

So people are saying on here, kids are allowed to watch violence, ect..so that makes Katy Perrys outfit appropriate? Really? I DO NOT allow my daughter to watch regular TV. I can’t help what she has seen at Walmart, or any where else. But i do let her know whats appropriate and what is not. To actually think this was okay for your child to watch, you obviously have no morals yourself. As far as what they see at a swimming pool? You are stupid. Have some morals America!!!!!!!!!!! Please watch out for your children!!! If you cant then you shouldn’t be a parent!!! That’s why America is so disgusting now a days!!A bunch of trashy arrogant people raising kids, sitting on welfare knowing nothing about what affects a child. UGH! Thank you Sesame Street for taking it off the air!!

Angela get off your high horse. Okay so you don’t allow your child to watch television, good for you. That doesn’t make the rest of us wrong, we allow our children to watch what is age appropriate or most of us do anyhow. I take it you’ve never let your child watch The little Mermaid? Ariel wears nothing more than a bikini top. How about Tinkerbell? Her dress is actually shorter and tighter than the one Katy Perry had on. Go get a life and stop judging everyone because seriously you are delusional if you think your child hasn’t been exposed to much worse than Katy Perry singing an innocent song with Elmo.

She’s dressed pretty much like Tinkerbell – who those complaining parents probably saw in Peter Pan when they were little. Were they damaged by that?
Sorry, I don’t see the issue here.

For those who say that this should have been allowed and that there is nothing wrong with it because they MAY see to much cleavage at the pool or because they MAY have seen this on a commercial, I think you’ve got your brains twisted! We’re REALLY going to justify Katy’s outfit based on guess work? With that kind of justification, we might as well let them watch sex videos on the OFF CHANCE that they walk in on mom and dad having sex! Or let them watch cage fighting because they’ll see a fight sooner or later. We’re just so quick to try and justify something. What happen to decency? What’s so wrong with parents protecting THEIR children as much as possible? I for one am glad that Sesame Street has the guts to make a tough decision and make a stand like that.
