Gingrich to Obama: Come Out Against Building of Mosque

President Obama should come out against the building of a community center and mosque close to Ground Zero in his press conference this morning, Newt Gingrich said, because the American people want to see "evenhandedness" on this issue.

“I think the American people are prepared to say don’t burn the Koran just as they wouldn’t want to burn the bible or any other religious document,” Gingrich told me. “But they are also prepared to say [to Obama] ‘Why don’t you be pretty blunt, be at least as blunt with Imam Rauf as you are with the pastor in Florida and tell him don’t do it.’”

The former speaker of the House also had some advice for the potential next speaker– Rep. John Boehner.  Should Republicans win back the House – which pundits and poll numbers are saying is increasingly likely – Gingrich said Boehner needs to immediately reach out to Obama.

“I am certain that the willingness to try to find some common ground, not by compromising your principles, but by finding some things you can do together, would make a big difference to the country,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich made his seventh visit this election cycle to Iowa yesterday. But when I asked him about his possible presidential run he said he didn’t know.

“We’ll come back and talk to you about that early next year,” he said.

Watch my interview with Gingrich here and then weigh in below.

Coming from Gingrich this is no suprise. He’s a known bigot. He’s known for having the morals of a prostitute. Obama has said all he needs to say on this situation that is local to New York City. If 2.5 blocks isn’t far enough way for some people, 100 miles won’t be far enough. The radicals and bigots need to be bypasses so that a wider and mroe reasoned understanding can take over.

This is coming from a guy who divorced his wife while she was in the hospital having cancer treatment. Morals? Childplease!

George, do your job. There is no new masque planned for New York! Its a community center. This is just a fact! Second, Gingrich is a waste of skin! You might as well have a skin head as a contributer. But a skin head would most likely say the same things as good old Newt. I’m sure both feel the God is on thier side.

Why on earth should Obama or anyone be against the Mosque anywhere. We have FREEDOM of religion here in the USA. Good Muslim people died on 9/11 too. should we burn the bible to show we’re against the Priests accused of being a sexual predator? That is just the Dumbest thing anyone can say. Gingrich is a total idiot and should just shut his big fat mouth.

Mr Gingrich you need to restore your values to this country (forget about your personal life.) Your declaring the Muslem religion as our enemy is an example of a narrow minded person who is looking to be elected to something. Forget it… Your own president said that it was not the Muslems who bombed us and now you are contradicting him. My surprise is that he is not coming out and restating his original views. Many Muslems have lived in the U.S. for years with no problems but the climate of today is filled with hate and fear of anything different or anything that does not fit the mold of some people. What happened to we are all welcome and are most of us are good people. I consider you no better than a spy to come out with your statement. You are hurting not helping this country as there are enough crazies out there which you are firing up with your negative rhetoric of hate. You,Palin,Limbaugh,Hannity have done a number on this country with your spewing of hate and lies. You pretend to love this country and yet all we hear out of you and Fox is hate and lies. Mr. Rupert needs to also watch who he is friends with. Check out who he is investing with.. What happened to the republicans party? It is being filled with people who have limited ideas and bad ones and the good people of years ago are afraid to stand up to them because they want to get back in power. Remember, the republican candidates are not the ones winning..it is the tea party nuts and they will eventually take over a party that I once belonged to and I feel badly about this. It will be hard for you to get them out once they get in so you better think on your values. They want to take us back 20 years in regard to religious freedom, freedom to choose, racial freedom,do away with our education dept. which is finally achieving good things under Obama. I am not interested in privitizing our soc. sec. dept. keep your hands off it and I believe the health care bill will in the end be good for all. We do need the sanctions on the banks, insurance companies and oil companies but these people will remove them and we will be back where we started. It is a shame the once respectable republican party is the party of no help the the people who really need it..unemployment..they say no…small business loans..they say no. This is not the party I once belonged to..it has changed and not for the better. As to the tax cut for the upper 2%..they have had it for 10 years and look where we are ..in a recession. They have not helped this country only their pocketbooks. They are sending out their products to be made in other countries cheaper but we do not see a lower price, in fact prices are rising so I ask where is the sense in allowing them to keep it? This recession did not start in 2009 but in the last eight years when they had this tax break and it did not result in good things for this country.

Why is he still talking? Seriously !!!

If the community center in New York has a fundraiser I will send them money. Any one who adds “BUT” after saying “they have the right” is just wrong! It’s either equal rights for all or we loose part of what it means to be an American. Hitler had the Jews and some good christians now have the Muslims. Both were proved wrong by history.

Newt Gingrich is part of the party of No! No solutions, no progress and no to changes. He will never, never run for president because he will never win.

It takes SSSooo much energy to decipher the reality of ANY political situation…I marvel at your perseverance, George! My focus is on the personal subconscious side. I thank you for trying to “simplify” THE WORLD STAGE with your “Must Reads.” Without following you…I’d be TOTALLY ignorant…Or, perhaps THE WORLD truly HASN’T PROGRESSED IN 5000 YEARS! Over 70% of Americans are AGAINST the building of the Mosque near Ground Zero. It is time for the President to listen to the people. This building hasn’t been inspected for bodies. We know a wheel from one of the planes went into it, so why is Rauf claiming there are no bodies inside? Why is he saying if the Mosque is not built HERE, the Muslim headlines will read, Americans at war with Islam and will lead to attacks?
George, why are you keying in on ONE MAN who is a loony tune, and not show that THOUSANDS of Muslims are BURNING FLAGS in protest. Are they not disrespecting us?

Posted by: wheresmymoney | September 10, 2010, 10:25 am 10:25 am

The Pastor in Florida has a right to burn the Koran but it is wrong. The mosque is no different and the president should say so. It is not a local issue, the attack was on America not just NY.

Posted by: ddsimms | September 10, 2010, 10:39 am 10:39 am

I think Newt Gingrich has got the right ideal. Its not that anybody is against building their muslam center. But it comes down to where it is being built and the respect to the country and the people that died in the buildings. I relize there where muslams in it also, but they have to under stand they would be feeling the same way if we where doing the same thing in their country. And we wouldn’t even have to do anything they wouldn’t let us build a building like that anywhere because they just don’t like us or our god, but we are just suppose to let things go like nothing has happened. this is where our freedom and right go away because they are afended but it doesn’t matter that we are afended that they are coming across as mocking us by doing this deed, and just adding to the fire whilr htings are going on over in their country, it seems to me that they don’t have the respect for their people either which goes back to all they can think about is their selfves and not the whole picture. Every body needs to sit back and wait till we get our men and women out of there and work this out at a later date. And quit pointing fingers at every body. and Iran needs to worry about themselfves and get their own country under control before they try insight another war. If they are a quit and peaceful people then they need to start proving it.

To all of you in support of the Mosque, do you also support the Dove Church’s right to burn the Quran? Its legal. Its their 1st amendment right. Before you go to the idea of inciting riots, what is happening at ground zero? An Army of cops have been called in. So, what is it? Are you all hypocirts, or do you support the Dove church as well?????

Posted by: boog | September 10, 2010, 10:43 am 10:43 am

Newt is so stupid! Where was he when Obama said…”although they have a right to build it there, I question their decision.” – which clearly means “I don’t agree with it” in a Presidential way – a way Newt wouldn’t understand.

George, how about finding out the FULL list of people that were on the President’s plane when it buzzed the twin tower site?

Posted by: wheresmymoney | September 10, 2010, 10:47 am 10:47 am

I commend Mr. Gingrich for coming on your show and speaking out against the burning of the Koran. However, I think it’s morally bad to burn ANY church in ANY location, not just the Koran church. I don’t think it matters where a church (despite it’s denomination) is located – no one has the right to tell someone, “I’m going to burn down your church because I don’t like what you believe. Pastor Terry Jones needs to have his head examined and thrown out of the church. He should not be allowed to remain a pastor because his beliefs are out of character for a Christian. He should be ashamed of himself for his unforgivable actions he is entitling himself to.

At least he has the gonads to voice his opinion on a delicate subject. Obama won’t give his views on things such as this. He would rather sit back and tell people what they should and shouldn’t do. Some great “leader” America has. Wishy-washy until it comes to spending and he is all in favor of it. He stinks as president and doesn’t deserve the title.

Wow, what softball questions. I guess the republicans are going to take back the House and possibly the Senate. George didn’t want to tee the Republicans off by challenging Newt like you did President Obama. You just let him regurgitate those Talking Points and link the Mosque to the Qur’an burning. When the entire time the Pastor said he was doing it to protest the spread of so called Radical Islam. Good job George way to kiss up.

Posted by: terry | September 10, 2010, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Sorry, but you liberals are as naive as you are vitriolic. The ground zero mosque will be a global victory monument to help recruit for future jihad. Why else does it have to be at ground zero? There are over a hundred mosques in New York, but they’re not enough? And please stop lying about the mosque being “blocks from ground zero”. The mosque site was damaged by pieces from one of the planes that destroyed the towers. That’s why the mosque developers were able to buy it so cheap. The mosque site is part of ground zero, not blocks from it.

Posted by: SeeTheLight | September 10, 2010, 11:36 am 11:36 am

It seems hypocritical that the liberals here are so eager to attack Gingrich for mistakes in his personal life. Yet they give Obama a 100% pass on his marijuana and cocaine addictions.

Posted by: SeeTheLight | September 10, 2010, 11:43 am 11:43 am

Whatever Obama does he will be criticized by one side or the other. He has to stand up for the constitution especially as a lawyer and president. He has personally said he thinks it is wrong and that is as far as he can go because if he takes steps to stop it, he will be accused of ignoring the consitition and the republicans will bring him up on some charge of abuse of power. He is in a bad spot and cannot do more than what he has done.

The solution to the Muslim center is simple. It needs to be at least 50% bigger and the cost split between Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindu, and any other major religion. It could be called the Interfaith Center with room for all these faiths to work together to bring better understanding and for all faiths to have recreation and worship. A symbol for each faith can be mounted at top of building with the symbols being equal size and equally displayed. This way it ends up just what the Muslims said it was going to be and all faiths owning it. It would show that these major faiths want to work together to prevent incidents like 9/11 and religious hatred around the world.

People in this country need to wake up! Muslim people want to take over our country because they do not want a democratic society, in any country. They hate the US and we just let them all in here. This will be our demise! Starting with our leader who has never committed to a church and prays in a chapel in the White House. Ask Israel if Obama is a plant for the Arab world and they will tell you, “yes”!! Wake up before your country is taken over by Arabs!!

Well, old Newt never misses a chance. I have yet to hear how the Republicans plan to restore our industrial base and create the type of jobs that have moved to Asia over the last several decades. The money WE invest in OUR stock market gets invested in foreign factories and technology further reducing our industrial and economic base. It won’t matter who we elect this November if we can’t get LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY reinvested in OUR country.I am also wondering how all of these college students plan to repay their loans AND own a house and support a family over the next twenty years. It looks to me like our entire capitalist system has defaulted ON US. Private industry WILL NOT FIX THIS and THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOESN’T HAVE THE MONEY (what happened to that big surplus we had saved up?).
So this November, lets not vote for a candidate that understands that if Wall Street isn’t going to invest in America then the Federal Government must, but instead lets vote based on religious and racial views like we always do.
SEE YOU ALL IN THE BREAD LINES.

Joyce Fisher | Sep 10, 2010 1:22:58 PM — There is no more evidence that Muslims want to take over the country than the Christians want to take over the country. The 9/11 attack was committed by terrorists, not Muslims. The KKK back in the 40s and 50s were terrorists and not Christians. The KKK used religion to justify their hatred and killing of others. The few Muslims in our country preaching hatred to Christians is no different than the few Christians in our country that preach hatred against the Muslims. NYC has one of the largest concentrations of Muslims in America and they don’t have a violence problem with them. It is foreign terrorist that want to be dictators of the world that we are having problems with. And just like the KKK, they use their faith as the excuse for their actions. Over 90% of the innocent people they kill are Muslims.

Gingrich, I saw your AD for your “new” book that is Extreme, polarizing and saying America is at WAR with Muslims. So, it is Not surprising that you and your supporters are “terrorizing” our country where hundreds of Muslim Americans live and fight for US too. Slimeball Newt, stop your Fear and Smear and stop “proping” up the “Terrorist” in Florida. And if your God or that of the “terrorist maggot” in Florida does the Same damn thing that the “terrorist of Muslim faith” is doing…..YOU, Nor him is NO better than “them”. The President knows the constitution. Thank God he is NOT a bigot, despite What you and the other Slimeballs on Fear News spreaded yet once again to create fear of “them”. Those people aren’t building a “mosque”… that is a Community center 5 blocks from ground Zero, to demonstrate that Americans are Tolerant and we ALL can Learn something from each other, if only Bigots like you stop spreading FEAR of “them”. Mr. Gingrich didnt say anything in this interview to inspire such hateful blogs. The man was extremely level headed and never once stated that he was against the Muslim religion. He simply said that a measure of evenhandedness for both sides of this argument was called for. Resorting to name calling doesnt help any of you state your points. The argument that if you disagree with the Muslim idea you must be a bigot is simply absurd.

the last thing the country needs is Gringrich again. Hypocrite and political opportunist. Of course, Obama should come against the victory mosque but since he is already on record as supportive if he came out now against than Gringrich would say Obama flip-flopped! The infamous small time “Christian pastor” was inflamed by the rhetoric of gingrich and politics of fear an dhate.

Once again Gingrich validates my opinion of him. He is a bigot and politicizing the building of the muslim cultural center in NYC is a perfect foil for him. Does he know that there is a Mosque already in the area and has been fro the last several years? I suppose having a strip club at ground zero is better than having a cultural center there. Newt should crawl back under rock he came from and stop advising the President what to do. Newt Gingrich former Speaker and architect of the 1994 Republican Plan on America in earlier times gave excellent advise, but I see he is now in remission and returning to his old self. It would be interesting to see what would happen if George S. or any ABC interviewer would end their “tough person” rhetoric and restore sanity and integrity to the field they claim they love so much – Journalism. George, Diane and others have manifested this “attitude” in their conversation with the current President (makes you go hmmmm?) but have not done so with Gingrich, Former President, former Vice-President, current want to be Speaker, they appear to lose their “toughness” all of a sudden. I am greatly disappointed with the network bearing the memory of Jennings, Robinson, and the former CBS newsman Cronkite and the person whose job George first took over for Sunday Morning.

The republicans and the likes of Newt, Palin, Boehner and Beck would like nothing more than to have our country attacked again by a few muslims radicals. The current President is clearly keeping our country safe, with more terrorists being taken out…it is killing them to know that we aren’t running in fear of “them” anymore. Aw, but some are still running in fear because of their “fear-mongering”. Shame on them.

The Quran shouldn’t be burned, it’s just the wrong thing to do. The mosque should have been built somewhere else just because it would have been a peace keeping effort. This country is so full of hate right now, when is it going to stop? Even our president is talking hate about republicans which encourages the people in both parties to continue the bickering. It just gets worse every day. I don’t want to turn on the news anymore. What will it take to bring peace back into our own country?

Posted by: Kate McNamee | September 11, 2010, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm

Honestly, this entire debate about the proposed “Islamic Cultural Community Center” is baseless! If ALL the news networks were interested in reporting the information responsibly they would let Americans know that there are several existing Mosques in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero that are much closer than this proposed project. Additionally, the debate only deepens the growing divide between religious and racial groups in this country and abroad. How is that productive for anyone? America cannot progress until we all learn that our similarities as human beings far outweigh our individual differences. Every human being in the world shares 99.9% of the EXACT same DNA and only .1% makes up our individual differences, so would it be so easy to hate if this knowledge was universally known?
George and the entire ABC News team, do your job and stop fanning the flames of hatred in the name of spirited debate. Trust that news can be just as interesting when it is informative and honest.
Our President deserves our support on this as he has done exactly what he was supposed to do, uphold the principles America was built on… Freedom of expression in all forms.
Tell the truth and end this hate baiting because lives are at stake and people are not mere casualties, they are people!
Perhaps if the doors of communication were opened we may learn to settle conflicts peacefully, even when we agree to disagree.

Whether it be two blocks, ten blocks or right smack on top of ground zero. That goes against the constitution and the responsibilities to the people of the US.He’s the President for all, not just a select few. What about the Muslims that died at ground zero? What about the Muslims serving in our military to protect our freedoms? Where’s the outrage about the gaping hole at ground zero? What about the 1100 plus uncovered bodies that are still there? There’s a Mosque in the Pentagon why isn’t Newt protesting that? What about the Mosque 4 blocks from ground zero that’s been there for over 40 years? The whole argument is ridiculous and Newt is nothing more than a politicizing idiot. Using the ignorance of people to gain political ground is disgusting.Well, what should we expect from a man that dumped his wife via a phone call while she lay suffering with breast cancer in her hospital bed. Now there’s a guy with morals.

I volunteered and joined the Army, and I served as an 11B Infantryman. Most of my time in the field was in squad or platoon size operations. We would have discussions about what we were fighting for. It always came back to the “Bill of Rights”. To me the most important was “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

There is a lot of difference between Rev. Terry Jones & Imam Faisal as between Extremist and Moderates.
American Muslims & Imam should exercise the right to build the mosque where planned to demonstrate that acts of extremist shall not affect moderate and peaceful American people.

Mr. Gingrich..you are doing more to fuel the fire of hate with your distorted statements. President Obama is doing what the Constitution demands, freedom to choose what religion you want. Many of these Muslems are fighting in this war which your party started….what can we tell them…fight for us but we don’t like your religion? You are causing more unrest and uproar with your negative statements and many have come out to say this. If you think you are scoring points..think again.

This mosque is being put in a very disrespectful place. there are many other places to put this thing and I think that it is very disrespectful to the ones that lost loved ones to put this here. Common respect should dictate where this should be put. These people know better than to put this here. Show more respect please!

Newt Gingrich is another blow-hard republican with no common sense, no morals, and with no concern for our nation. All he cares about is Newt Gingrich.

Muslims shouldn’t be building a monument to their work on 9/11 and they shouldn’t be whinning about some pastor burning a koran.

“How do you give that speech and do what you’re doing?”
-Gingrich’s second wife Marianne — whom he cheated on with his current wife, Callista.
Newts response;
“It doesn’t matter what I do,” he answered. “People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn’t matter what I live.“

Oh, Newty…
How does it feel to be such a liar, pants constantly on fire…

Why is the word ‘Koran’ capitalized and the ‘bible’ put into lower case? It should be the other way around, or at least capitalize both words. This says volumes.

I agree with Gingrich. Obama was eager and rude to barge into public discourse with his snarling advocacy FOR building a mosque at Ground Zero — as he has been eager to lobby for Islam in general throughout his use of the White House — but note he is utterly silent if not appearing fearfully embarrassed when asked about any other faith, including having a lunch with Netanyahu in the White House (Obama excused himself from that and left the visiting Netanyahu to dine alone).
Obama IS NOT behaving in keeping with any separation from religion. He’s eager to speak in favor of Islam, lobby for Islam, court and spark with Muslims, use the White House to “celebrate” Muslim “holidays,” but, in the contrary, as President, refuses to acknowledge the National Day of Prayer as it’s been previously associated with Christianity (Christians created the holiday, have traditionally upheld and celebrated it — suddenly Obama refuses to even acknowledge the national holiday, appearing quite ashamed of it , yet he uses the White House and the Presidency to eagerly ridicule the nation about Islam, on Islam’s behalf).
To be “fair” as President, Obama got himself involved in the mosque issues which he never should have, regardless of what may be his nefarious, prejudicial beliefs in support of Islam to the demeanment of other religions. Now that he IS involved (by is own choice), he should be showing some reasonableness in the Presidency and speaking out so vociferously on all religions. None or all. So far, he’s only behaving quite so emotionally when the issue is Islam when Islam is in need of defending.

They hate the United States, they burn our flag, they kill our soldiers who are serving, they take American hostages, and they plot terrorism attacks on our allies and at our embassies, why should we not object to a mosque in New York where terrorists murdered innocent people by hijacking
planes and ramming them into the World Trade Center? This would be a sign of victory of them if we let this happen.

Mr. Gingrich, you need to not say too much, it might get you in trouble.
