President Obama: ‘I am a Christian By Choice…The Precepts of Jesus Spoke to Me’
At a backyard town hall in Albuquerque, NM, Tuesday, President Obama was asked “Why are you a Christian?” The question, from teacher’s assistant Elizabeth A. Murphy, 42, was one of three “hot topics” she raised with the president.
“I’m a Christian by choice,” the president said. “My family didn’t — frankly, they weren’t folks who went to church every week. And my mother was one of the most spiritual people I knew, but she didn’t raise me in the church.”
The president said he “came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead — being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me. And I think also understanding that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings, that we’re sinful and we’re flawed and we make mistakes, and that we achieve salvation through the grace of God. But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people and do our best to help them find their own grace.”
The president said “that’s what I strive to do. That’s what I pray to do every day. I think my public service is part of that effort to express my Christian faith.”
As is his wont, the president didn’t proselytize, but rather chose to say that he “deeply believes that part of the bedrock strength of this company is that it embraces people of many faiths and of no faith — that this is a country that is still predominantly Christian. But we have Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, and that their own path to grace is one that we have to revere and respect as much as our own. And that’s part of what makes this country what it is.”
Because of his Muslim roots – his father was born Muslim, though was not observant – the president’s religion has long been a topic of conversation and false smears. Last month a poll indicated that a growing number of Americans mistakenly believe that he’s a Muslim.
In his second book, “The Audacity of Hope,” from 2006, then-Sen. Obama wrote that “the particular attributes of the historically black church” – Trinity United Church of Christ, the congregation he has since left after the controversy involving Rev. Jeremiah Wright – “helped me shed some of my skepticism and embrace the Christian faith.”
The president wrote that he was “drawn to the power of the African American religious tradition to spur social change…I was able to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death; rather, it was an active, palpable agent in the world.”
In the African American church, he wrote, “the lines between sinner and saved were more fluid; the sins of those who came to church were not so different from the sins of those who didn’t, and so were as likely to be talked about with humor as with condemnation. You needed to come to church precisely because you were of this world, not apart from it; rich, poor, sinner, saved, you needed to embrace Christ precisely because you had sins to wash away – because you were human and needed an ally in your difficult journey, to make the peaks and valleys smooth and render all those crooked paths straight.”
The president wrote these “newfound understandings” led to him “finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized. It came about as a choice and not an epiphany; the questions I had did not magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt God’s spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth.”
Murphy also asked the president if he would accept some homegrown “Right from the South Valley” chili peppers from her husband, Albuquerque Fire Department Lieutenant Kerry Murphy.
“I will definitely check out these chili peppers,” the president said. “I like spicy food to go with your spicy questions.”

Mr. president, neither Christianity nor the Bible tells one to be “my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper.” Quite the opposite is true, we are NOT our brothers’ or sisters’ keepers. It is a neat trick if we can simply “keep” ourselves living His commandment — “Love one another as I have loved you.”
Jesus showed us His Love by dying on the cross; what have you done lately?

…any questions? Can we move on now?
Posted by: Gerald | September 29, 2010, 10:28 am 10:28 am
Here are some glaring errors in this false believer.
He’s a Christian by choice? See the control he still thinks he has over faith? We dont choose God chooses US and when we come to believe this we are on our way to trusting in him fully.
The precepts of Jesus? Not that he IS God he IS truth? He talks of Jesus as if he’s an idea. Are you people really listening to his language? For any true believer this should disturb you.
His talk of sin is masked still in language that he as something to do with his faith, when in reality we simply don’t.
I have to confess my judgemental heart and surrender it to God, because I know I do and want to judge this man, of which I have NO right to do, but the language just doesn’t carry much in my opinion. He’s phony and dangerous and very much I believe a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Dear Mr. President.
If you indeed understand the power and the truth of the teachings of Jesus then please go ahead and tell the world that the United States of America is a Christian Nation born from those values and principals.
You do not have any problem calling other countries Muslim Nations.
You should not have a problem being proud of our heritage.

Jesus himself could come down on wings of glory and personally proclaim that President Obama is, indeed, one of His followers…and it still wouldn’t be good enough for some of you people.
Move on and get a life.

Strength of this company, Jake?
good grief, everybody else was able to quote him accurately:
“”One thing I want to emphasize, having spoken about something that obviously relates to me very personally, as president of the United States I’m also somebody who deeply believes that part of the bedrock strength of this country is that it embraces people of many faiths and no faith,” he said. “That this is a country that is still predominantly Christian, but we have Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, and that their own path to grace is one that we have to revere and respect as much as our own.”
“That’s part of what makes this country what it is.” (President Obama, in response to a question from a voter)

It only took two years for him to finally go to church AFTER criticism. Then, this plant asks him this question. Knowing that its going to be asked of him ahead of time, Obama sputters in his lie. Guys Obama’s father was a Muslim, he went to Muslim schools and did not set foot on the US Mainland until he was 17. Being a “Christian” was just a way that he could garner public votes by showing he is part of the community. Lets face it- far left liberals are atheists- they are on these boards all day long bashing Christians. Far left people like Obama and Pelosi are the same way. They Have to grudgingly (as Obama has) pretend like they are Christians. Even if it means swallowing your own vomit as you lie about it.

That’s why I became a Christian.

I wasn”t at this gathering and cannot speak regarding the President’s declaration of faith in the teachings of Jesus. However, his father had no part in raising him; his mother and her family which did, while not church goers were Christians. He made a conscious choice to be baptized as a young adult, a much more meaningful acknowledgement of faith than having been baptized as an infant.
Tho the majority of Americans follow some form of Christianity, the Founding Fathers of our country were deists, meaning they had faith in a Higher Power, but abstained from declaring the path they chose to observe their faith.
The U.S. is not “Christian” nation. the U.S. is a nation of many faiths founded on the precept of freedom of religion for ALL. The U.S. is a democratic republic wherein however any of us believe is a private matter. When President Obama refers to “Muslim” countries, he’s referring to those countries where Islam is the state religion and those countries are theocracies.

As for the Bible stating ‘we are our brothers’ keepers,’ I suggest that you read or re-read the tale of Cain and Abel and the one of Jacob and Esau, both of which may be found in the Old Testament. The teachings of the Old Testament are no less valid than those espoused in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which form the core of the New Testament.

Perhaps you can explain why during the founder time we signed a treaty declaring that we are not a Christian nation?

I would agree with you maybee.
But this is a central right wing strategy to portray Obama as the other.
Hawaii as some exotic locale instead of being a state.
Calling him a Muslim, etc.
The birther movement may be more well known because of its silliness but many Republicans have adopted this strategy.
Why?
They feared Obama’s personal popularity.

There is no central right wing strategy to portray Obama as the other. Obama happily uses his non-traditional upbringing when it suits him, and if you look at the polls, it seems that people of all political persuasions have noticed. That doesn’t mean they care, and most would happily let Obama get on with his own personal beliefs if the media and his advisors would just stop asking us to care.

He is a Christian, no doubt about it! The problem I have as well as so many is that his religious beliefs and value systems are likely based on black liberation theology and racist hatred spewed by the Rev Jerimiah Wright. Yea, don’t like raising that ugly one up again, but he never did satisfy to my liking the questions posed to him during and after the campaign about his relationship with Wright. More importantly, he never appropriately explained away how he could sit and listen to Wright for 20 years and not be impacted with racist biases and ill-will to the Jews and whites.

President Obama would be doing the Muslim world a favor by refusing to call their countries “Muslim Countries”. We’d have a much safer world if the middle east would start practicing the concept of separation of church and state.

I do not support Obama’s policies in many areas but he is a Christian and it is pointless to make petty comments about this issue all the time.
Obama is just stating that America is very diverse and he wants to keep religion on the sidelines; after all, he is the President of America and not a religious leader.
Give him a break!
Jesus and the Apostles supported love and they suffered for this greatly but the “light” could not be crushed or defeated.
Therefore, show the same “light!”

What the media fail to elaborate is the same poll said only 34% or approximately one out of three Americans believe Obama is a Christian. This seems to be supported by the fact that during his administration, he and his family attended church service near the WH only four times

The whole question of Obama’s religion has obviously been manufactured and ‘cooked’ by the far right, aided and abetted by Fox News.
The idea that the number of times one has attended church makes that person a ‘better’ or ‘truer’ Christian is laughable. Some of the worst people I’ve known have gone to church on Sunday and Monday morning happily ripped off employees or customers or beat their wives or kids.
Actions speak louder than words. Obama has shown with his leadership on important issues affecting the health and well-being of Americans that he is indeed a Christian.

The fact of the matter is that Obama’s true christian faith embraces black liberation theology that he is only trying to keep under wraps. The Muslin thing helped tremendously with this ongoing effort as well as finally attending church at St. John’s Church Lafayette Square, a primary white Episcopal congregation in DC. Why didn’t he go to a black liberation congregation? As during the campaign, he’s avoiding having to justify his true religion and beliefs by putting up smoking mirrors. His religious precepts are based on hatred for the cracker and jew who continue oppression of the black man. He needs to come clean on this and stop the hypocrisy.

You’re right.
Obama has sought to give more people access to healtcare.

Perhaps this is a little nit-picky, but the the words “brother’s keeper” were never spoken by Jesus and do not appear anywhere in the New Testament.
They come from Gen 4:9. They are the words of Cain to God, after he killed Able: “Then the …Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
