Secretary Gates Called Pastor Jones, Defense Department Confirms

ABC News' Luis Martinez reports: Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell confirmed to the Pentagon press corps that Defense Secretary Robert Gates called Florida pastor Terry Jones this afternoon to express his “grave concerns” about a planned Koran burning because it could place US military lives at risk.  Morrell said Gates placed a call between 4 and 4:30 p.m. today and engaged the pastor in a “very brief conversation."  "The Secretary expressed his grave concerns to the pastor that going forward with the Koran burning would put the lives of American servicemembers at risk, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan and he urged him not to proceed with the burning," he said. Morrell would not characterize Jones’ responses during the phone conversation. As to who asked Gates to place the call, Morrell referred to his comments at today’s press briefing at which he said the administration was discussing internally whether a phone call should be made. – Luis Martinez

Good. Jones is not a “pastor” – he has a history as a delusional huckster and Islamophobic provocateur.
Jones led a charismatic evangelical church in Cologne up until 2009 when members of the congregation kicked him out because of his radicalism and “suspicions of financial irregularities”.
According to German news source SPIEGEL, Jones and his wife regarded themselves as divinely appointed and any opposition was a crime against the God. They allegedly used these methods to demand money and work from members of the congregation. SPIEGEL also states Jones urged church members to beat their children, taught “a distinctive demonology”, and conducted brainwashing.
Americans supporting this man’s hate-filled ideology are perpetuating a cult of ignorance.

This has NOTHING to do with this idiots threat to burn books…an idiot old man with 50 cult followers is no news..
The Mainstream Media created this event and gave it credence to protect the flailing democrat party, the failure of Obama on the economy, the failure of Obama on the stimulus, the growing scandals of Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters.. this “event” was created by the Media and White house to get the pressure off democrats and especially obama..( for a while)…This old man and his cult following were unknown till ABC CBS NBC and the White house made them a news item..They could have burned the books and no one would have noticed…….
Obama VS America

“This has NOTHING to do with this idiots threat to burn books…an idiot old man with 50 cult followers is no news..”
I would tend to agree.
This media story harkens back to Summer of the Shark, sound and fury signifying nothing.
“The Mainstream Media created this event and gave it credence to protect the flailing democrat party”
A new conspiracy theory?
Does the right wing deal with reality on occasion or is everything a nefarious plot?
Its a made for media event, complete with a cartoonish villain!

Why do you insist on twisting every event as Obama VS America?
Jones was covered by the European media since 2008 after his congregation in Germany expelled him from their fundamentalist church for abuse, financial irregularities and his whacko radicalism.
While I agree Jones was exposed by a media circus, it’s also true that he reflects a cancer that spread to Islamophobes here in America.
It’s worthwhile to have a continuing discussion about the Separation of Church and State.
It’s worthwhile to rediscover the reasons for the First Amendment.
It’s worthwhile to consider carefully before electing fundamentalist conservatives who support war and proclaim the world is at “The End Times”.

One can only imagine what it’s like to answer the phone and be read the Riot Act by the Secretary of Defense!

Amazing that a “Pastor”, of a 50 member church, could generate this media attention. Imagine the scenario at the WH-who should call? Let’s pick straws! Gates lost. Gates, that is a memory you ,and your children , should cherish for a lifetimd.

Obama said: Jones’ Plan to Burn Korans Is ‘A Destructive Act’ yet didn’t say the same about building a mosque at Ground Zero. Both are destructive, yet Obama cherry picks his ‘outrage’ because he’s a radical. Building a mosque at Ground Zero is celebrating the spoils of victory yet Obama said word none about it other than – they have the right. Doesn’t Jones in like manner have the right to burn korans, even though it is not wise to?

Nobody should be burning any books especially ones that are sacred to their believers. This is America where freedom of religion is practiced. No religious symbol, book, or image should be desecrated. Why then doesn’t Obama stand against “modern art” depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary covered in dung? Obama is clearly feigning outrage over this because he is exploiting the limelight to garnish foreign political expediency.

You know what is most interesting at this point is what our kids will learn. We tell our kids to speak to the truth, but here you have the institutions of high moral with conflicting stories. Our kids are living in sad times!

.
Or how about a crucifix in a jar of urine… The “progressives” went apoplectic when funding was threatened to the NEA that supported this kind of garbage. They were all in favor of desecration of religious items (as long as it was Christian items). It was all about the 1st Amendment they said. Now that Muslems are offended (when aren’t they), these arguments no longer apply.

“Good. Jones is not a “pastor” – he has a history as a delusional huckster and Islamophobic provocateur. ”
I heartily agree. This idiot has received way too much attention. He was able to use the media as his own publicity firm. Ridiculous.
Amazingly, he has also highlighted the way some will trip over themselves so as to not offend the “religion of peace.” This stunt pales in comparison to our mere presence in the middle east, our drone killings and our freedoms in general as a recruitment tool for terrorists. And we shouldn’t be shying away from this. We are acting scared of what these mouth breathing terrorists might do and that is just sad.

“Obama said: Jones’ Plan to Burn Korans Is ‘A Destructive Act’ yet didn’t say the same about building a mosque at Ground Zero. Both are destructive”
No, they’re not…except in the right-wing revised dictionary apparently. In reality burning something is destructive while building something is constructive. Trying to conflate definition and opinion is a sure sign of propaganda.

Burning the Koran would put the lives of American servicemembers at risk, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Secretary Gates)
Their (service-men) lives are already in danger as we are viewed as Zionists to them.
They are already talking about violent outburst from those of this religion simply because this pastor wants to burn those books which is his constitutional right to do so.
What is not right is that we are giving in to the fears of being attacked or of possible violence. This is in itself a form of terrorism, if they attack in this country law enforcement will do what they do. If they attack the military which they already are, those men will do what they are trained to do as well.

Even nutcases have rights……As of yet, I have not seen Obama set up a commission that limits the rights of those who use poor judgment…Refuse him a permit to protest then put him in jail if he crosses on public land to do his deed….He’s just looking for his moment in fame…

Burning books is protected a First Amendment protected right, just like burning the American flag. It is despicable jackassery, but it is still protected free speech. So is our right to call these guys jackasses.

“Or how about a crucifix in a jar of urine… The “progressives” went apoplectic when funding was threatened to the NEA that supported this kind of garbage.”
20 years later and right wing nuts still hold tightly to their outrages.
Let’s see threatening loss of funding to the NEA because they in part sponsored an art competition that was won by the artist, the same artist who got quite a few death threats (shades of the Danish cartoonist), is the same as asking a right wing nut not to burn books.

I am thinking about burning a copy of “Dreams of My Father”…
I wonder if I will get any calls or visits from high ranking government officials…

This is not the first time any religious books have been burnt. In 2008, fanatic Jews from Or-Yehuda – a city near Tel Aviv – forcibly gathered Bibles form Christians and Messianic Jews and burnt them in a bonfire. But nothing happened. No one from the Christian world protested or condemned this act. I understand that the Muslims do not consider any translations of the Koran or even copies of it printed in Arabic as their Holy Book at all. So what the heck? Let this moron who calls himself a pastor burn these printed material he considers religious books. All this moron wanted was attention – and the stupid media gave it to him. Now this tiny den that calls itself a church with less than 50 morons in its congregation will probably attract 50 more red-neck morons – and this idiot pastor will have a little more contributions in his till. This moron should have been just ignored. After all, morons come in different shapes, sizes, colors – and with funny mustaches too. Remember the guy from Germany during the second world war – the one with the silly toothbrush mustache?

pastor john is just a mad man who is yearning for a fleeting publicity but regard to the repurcution of his senceless action.burning any religious book is insensitive, extremist and abnoxious.the pastor should be taken to rehabilitation centre so as to change his dispicable character.

We all work for a world with harmony and brotherhood of the mankind as we all come from Adam.we should respect one another and defeat extremist from any religious background such as pastor Johns as they are enemy to the humanity.

OK, demonize Jones if you like, but what about appeasing the people who say they’ll riot if he burned the Koran?
What’s next?
The terrorists don’t like who we elect for president? They threaten violence.
What else won’t they like?
They’re like little Hitlers.
Jones may be a nut, but he has the right to do what he likes without government intervention.
