The Daisy Awards for Political Ads
On Nightline we gave a new award for campaign ads – the Daisy!
Named after President Lyndon Johnson’s infamous ad against Barry Goldwater, the award seeks to recognize the nonsense and sleaze we’re all subjected to each campaign season.
So who won the Daisy for best exploitation of an animal in a political campaign ad?
Best use of foreign boogeymen?
Best use of a firearm?
Most bizarre?
Check it out!

Is Congress Sounding Dumber?
Nice Jake, I enjoyed that.
I wouldn’t have called it a Daisy Award and the Statue is too cute for Political Ads.
How about calling it the SPin Head Award and the statue could be a Top placed on a Oscar type body with actual spinning lights, you know kinda like those spinning flashlight thingys they sell at Disney. Push a button and get a show.

Why wouldn’t everyone on Social Security vote republican?
After all Obama’s 2011 budget recommends a 2% COLA for federal employees, the congress voted itself a raise but for the second year running SS recipients get zero COLA.
Is this ironic, paradoxical or just plain sick?

What a wonderful world it would be if all this money spent on very stupid, sleazy and dark ads could be put toward something worthwhile that would actually make a difference in the lives of Americans long term.
Stewart and Colbert have the right idea when they stress bringing sanity back into vogue and politics.

I actually like Sestak’s ad and got quite a laugh out of Fiorina’s demon sheep (absurd!), but I agree we’ve really gone to the dogs this ad season. I don’t pay any attention to the ads.
I read an interesting post at TP about the coordination between the health insurance, banking and oil industries, the Koch brothers and their front groups and think tanks, Glenn Beck, Fox News and the US Chamber of Commerce on the 2010 election cycle. They did a great job dragging us all into the gutter.

“Stewart and Colbert have the right idea when they stress bringing sanity back into vogue and politics.” – Lindsay
Wouldn’t they have to be converted to conservatism to bring back sanity?

@Lindsey,
Is that some sort of JOKE? It’s the Republican candidates across the country that are talking about eliminating Social Security altogether!
The disingenuousness is really disgusting and widespread, as we see here with your deliberately misleading comments.

The reason people who receive social security aren’t eager to vote republican is due to a couple of reasons. First, the cost of living has actually not risen all that much. When inflation is high, then I think that would be a good point. But–republicans aren’t going to vote to raise benefits, because they are going to cut out government spending.
Also, republicans are big on privatizing, so that social security fund could be handled by another Madoff.
oops.

Ed Taylor: Huh?..republicans want to eliminate social security..that’s why!

Pat Toomey’s ads are especially disgusting…ruins TV watching completely..he gets these people whose voices are dripping with hatred. I suppose they’re supposed to sound outraged, but they really just sound mean-spirited, smarmy, and dishonest. What an odious human being. I suppose he’d describe himself as a christian too.

yes they are, and Sestak is such a good candidate. I hope Palin fans vote for Raese in Pennsylvania as she’s endorsed (even though Raese isn’t running in PA, you know, word salad mixed up not well informed craziness) and everyone with sense votes for Sestak.

Joe, here’s my post:

I’m not joking about that, no.
But I do agree that the post below mine made a poor suggestion. Those who care about social security will join liberal and progressive democrats and President Obama in their vow to keep it strong, and press them to do so.
Republicans are all over the map on social security. They are hypocrites and untrustworthy and have demogogued on demolishing it to appeal to the more insane in their base.

good news: Three out of the last four polls in Pennsylvania now show Joe Sestak ahead. And Feingold is closing the gap in Wisconsin.
Please vote! The crazies are going to and they’re trying to prevent others from doing so. Research examples in Nevada and Texas and check out some of the rhetoric on the comment boards.

Bottom line to me is: who in a sane frame of mind would support any of the negative comments in the first place.
This problem has been around for a long time now!
“The Government”, which is everyone that “We the People” keep re-electing at each election cycle, is where the most problems reside. Any attempts to make a common sense approach to getting to the root of this evil, and eliminating the “PROBLEM”, is another big problem for these elected officials to stand-up to. If any issue addresses the possibility of any losses to these elected officials’ personal agenda, is simply “NEVER” going to change. The only “REAL WAY” to make the way overdue change that is so desprately needed, and supported by “We the People”, will have to come thru the VOTING BOOTHS. This Government will never let an issue that encourages honesty, and trustworthiness, come up for any REAL discussion. That’s a fact! PEROID!
These elected officials’ honesty is far less than that of what used to be the most untrusted profession around; “A USED CAR SALESMAN”. Sad, but true today.

=============
Is that the same Joe Sestak who was openely and proudly battling Nebraska’s Ben Nelson to see who could demand the biggest bribes for their health care votes? Or is that a different Joe Sestak? Just wondering.

BTW – Why is it that Democrats are NEVER portrayed as “extreme” by the “mainstream media”? So much material…
- Alan Grayson (’nuff said)
- Barney Frank (male brothel run out of his townhome, for starters)
- Dennis Kucinich (or has belief in UFOs suddenly gone mainstream?)
- Bernie Sanders (self-described socialist)
- Barbara Boxer (well, in fairness, she probably approaches “mainstream” in CA…which explains why what is arguably our most naturally gifted state is imploding)
- Hank “Guam could tip over if too many U.S. Marines are based there” Johnson
- Etc.
The answer to the question: Objective and nonpartisan journalism is dead. Today’s “mainstream” media are cheerleaders, minions, and tools of the Democratic party.

Yes Woody, that’s Joe “Bribe Me Big” Sestak.

Woody, I was talking about the Joe Sestak running against the crazy, heartless, cheap Congressman who demogogued against uninsured, poor and sick children, the Joe Sestak who has a strong record on health care for Americans. If I recall correctly, he was a strong supporter of the public option and, yes, he had a hard time voting for a reform bill that did not include one.
Remember when he first ran for Congress, he explained eloquently that one of the biggest reasons he supported health care reform with a public option was because of the military health care benefits his family received, and that he credits for saving his young daughter’s life. She’s a brain cancer survivor.
Unlike Republican Mark Kirk in Illinois, who lies repeatedly about his service, Joe Sestak has been honest about his service in the U.S. Navy, where he rose through the ranks to become a vice admiral.
I thought this response in the debate was a good one, and it highlights one thing I like about him: “With the U.S. Military, we don’t breed liberals. We don’t breed conservatives. We’re on the ground in Afghanistan. There’s no liberals there. What is there is problem solvers….my first job on a warship during Vietnam War era, damage control officer. And that’s what we had to do was control the damage done by the policies of you and George Bush, Congressman.”
You see, he’s not a three term incumbent like Toomey who is part of the problems in DC. He’s a fresh face, with a truly independent outlook.

Lindsay, if it comes to light that Joe “Bribe Me Big” Sestak is too Liberal (pro public option) and not Conservative enough (anti Cap and Trade), he will lose.

“- Dennis Kucinich (or has belief in UFOs suddenly gone mainstream?)”
I realize you’re not very bright tjp but when has Kucinich ever been portrayed as anything but kooky (except for his harx core fans of course)?
In fact he was asked that UFO question in a debate.
“- Hank “Guam could tip over if too many U.S. Marines are based there” Johnson”
Huh? Making a silly gaffe is now being extremist?
Does that really compare with calling for armed revolution or an affinity for SS units?

Lindsay,
Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe you answered “yes” in there somewhere. Thanks.
