Adm. Mike Mullen: North Korea Situation Worrisome

ABC News' Huma Khan reports: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen today warned of destabilization in East Asia if North Korea acquires nuclear weapons or continues to provoke its neighbors.

"I think worrying is something we ought to stay with," Mullen said in an appearance with his wife, Deborah, on "The View." "It’s a worrisome leadership in North Korea. He [Kim Jong Il] is a very unpredictable guy, a very dangerous guy. This is also tied, we think, to the succession of this young 27-year-old whose going to take over at some point, and he continues to generate these kinds of events."

Like President Obama, Mullen also called on China to stand firm against North Korea.

"The one country that has influence in Pyongyang is China and so their leadership is absolutely critical," he said.

On Tuesday, White House officials said they are mulling the possibility of more U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises to show solidarity and support. The United States currently has 28,000 troops in South Korea, Mullen said.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman also warned of destabilization if North Korea continues to pursue nuclear arsenal. Just days earlier, North Korean revealed an upgraded and strengthened uranium enrichment plant to western scientists.

"If he continues on that path, him with nuclear weapons or his son is a very dangerous outcome for the long term and it will continue to destabilize a really important part of the world," Mullen said.

Mullen also addressed the terrorist threat within U.S. borders and the controversy surrounding the Transportation Security Administration’s new screeners and pat-downs.

Terrorists like the Christmas day underwear bomber “are still out there. They’re still trying to kill as many Americans as they can so it’s not going to go away,” he said.

Wow. An actual article of “substance” posted at around noon and no “right winger comments” on how our President is a weak leader. LOL…LOL…Must be the “gravity” of the article that is keeping the “lack of substance” fear mongering, conspiracy building “wing nuts” away. LOL…LOL Guess that is what happens to national security when the previous “leader of our armed forces” demonizes a country as a part of the “axis of evil” and does nothing to understand the situation. That is what happens when you “stick your head in the sand” and arbitrarily cut off any form of dialogue!

Finally…….someone who is a realist. Of course it is a potential problem. A potentially major one.

N Korea poses the greatest threat at the moment. They need attention and the only way is by provocation. Obama must make a firm stance and make it very clear to N Korea and China that they are on a dangerous road.

Put it another way. Were any Asian country to come within 20 Km of the British coast, point their guns in its direction, and then actually fire shells into British waters, would the British not fire back? JFK was justifiably ready to attack Cuba for even threatening to attack the USA! During the 2WW, Churchill sank the friendly French fleet, and in neutral territory, to prevent Hitler from using it. That was certainly justified.
History will record this Korean situation as unjustified Western provocation.

In 2002, North Korea restarted its nuclear program publicly and kicked inspectors out, and the Bush regime responded by feeding them to shut them up, so that they wouldn’t be distracted from their planned Anglo- American Raj in Iraq. In short (for an armistice is not a peace), they let two wars in progress fester so that they could start an elective war of conquest, which was supposed to pay for itself with oil for the victors. Seven years later, exhausted and depleted, we are going to be forced to refight something that should have been over more than half a century ago,and we may be facing nukes. Thanks for the foresight, W!
