Obama Won’t Have To Sleep On The Couch Tonight: Signs the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: With First Lady Michelle Obama by his side, President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act into law today, noting that if he hadn’t been able to get this bill passed he would be “sleeping on the couch.” “At a very basic level, this act is about doing what’s right for our children,” President Obama said from the Harriet Tubman Elementary School this morning. “Because when our kids walk into the lunch room, we want to be sure that they’re getting balanced, nutritious meals that they need to succeed in the classroom.” The bill provides $4.5 billion to schools over the next decade and sets standards for food served in school cafeterias, vending machines and stores. The legislation, Mr. Obama touted, will help 115,000 children get school meal programs and reimburses schools an additional six cents per lunch to help them provide healthier options. The president made sure to note that the bill is fully paid for and will not add a dime to the deficit. “Some of the funding comes from rolling back a temporary increase in food stamp efforts, or SNAP, as it’s now called, starting in the fall of 2013. I know a number of members of Congress have expressed concerns about this offset being included in the bill, and I’m committed to working with them to restore these funds in the future.” Mrs. Obama, herself an advocate of combating childhood obesity, spoke after her husband, painting the school lunch meals as “vital” for combating hunger, and improving the health of the nation’s children. The First Lady says that obesity isn’t just a public health issue, but one of an “economic threat,” and “national security threat,” as one in four young children are unqualified for military service because of their weight. “I think that parents have a right to expect that their efforts at home won’t be undone each day in the school cafeteria or in the vending machine in the hallway,” Mrs. Obama said, “I think that our parents have a right to expect that their kids will be served fresh, healthy food that meets high nutritional standards. And particularly in these tough economic times when so many families are struggling, when school meals sometimes are the main source of nourishment for so many kids, we have an obligation to make sure that those meals are as nutritious as possible.” -Sunlen Miller

Is Congress Sounding Dumber?
“Because when our kids walk into the lunch room, we want to be sure that they’re getting balanced, nutritious meals that they need to succeed in the classroom.”
Parents can be assured that their kids are receiving “balanced, nutritious meals” if they send their kids to school with lunches they have packed themselves!
“The First Lady says that obesity isn’t just a public health issue, but one of an “economic threat,” and “national security threat,” as one in four young children are unqualified for military service because of their weight.”
So, the food served in school cafeterias is responsible for the obesity problem in the U.S.? Are school cafeterias also responsible for obese adults?
“I think that parents have a right to expect that their efforts at home won’t be undone each day in the school cafeteria or in the vending machine in the hallway,”
The fundamental mission of schools is (used to be?) to provide an education for children, not meals. Parents who responsibly pack lunches for their children should will not have these concerns.
“And particularly in these tough economic times when so many families are struggling, when school meals sometimes are the main source of nourishment for so many kids, we have an obligation to make sure that those meals are as nutritious as possible.”
Thanks to the Obama Economy more families are on Food Stamps than ever before.
This bill isn’t about providing healthy meals for kids, it is about increasing reliance of the masses on the government…Those who are reliant on the government are more like to vote for Democrats. As usual with this crowd, it’s all about politics and attainment of power.

$4.5 billion to “set standards?” You have got to be kidding me.

It’s just another giveaway program, letting parents ignore their own responsibilities, and making the government pay for their kids.

It’s funny how right-wingers invent indignation when Democrats get votes from people they help since the Republican strategy of expecting people they alienate to support them has demonstrated shortcomings. One must resist the political temptation to help people…it’s bad for the country.

Hmmm….As an example, the black community has been ravaged by the “help” Democrats and progressives have provided – Since the advent of Great Society programs, the number of children raised in single-family households have soared, the number of abortions has soared, the number of black children who do not complete high school has soared, the incarceration rate of black males has soared, and it is not uncommon for black families to be the third or fourth generation to rely heavily/solely on government assistance.
On a percentage basis, blacks are more dependent on government assistance than any other ethnic group (save, perhaps, Native Americans). Blacks vote 90%+ for Democrats. Just a coincidence, I suppose?
The good news is there are a growing number of black conservative leaders (Lt. Col. Allen West, Tim Scott, Herman Cain, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, etc.) who are communicating to the black community there are alternatives to Democrats.
Before you call me out as a “racist”, I’m hispanic and am concerned “my people” will be the next to fall for this “grand deal”…

When we heard him say those words on ABC Radio News, I asked my wife if she’d buy a used car from that guy.
Nope. We’ve heard that kind of sales pitch before.

Then by all means thank Michelle for blowing another $5 billion. What ever happened to bringing a lunch?

Really guys? The government passes a bill to make food healthier in schools and you cry conspiracy? Let’s turn down the fear a little. You can’t cry fascist, commie conspiracy everytime something you disagree with is passed by the government. Now I’ll be the first to admit that the Democrats had a similar habit during the Bush years, but that doesn’t make the behavior right.
Maybe this is not the best use of taxpayer dollars, but we need to admit that there is a problem with obesity in this country. With this admission comes the knowledge that the status quo is not working. I for one think that nutritional education within schools has a good chance of reducing obesity. If it proves ineffective, it should be discontinued and a new course should be plotted.

Am I the only one who thinks that the wussification of recess might have something to do with fat children? The government has abolished genuine, play games, move around recess in favor of non-physical “activities”. We wouldn’t want the little darlings to get their feelings hurt if they didn’t win a game. We also wouldn’t want the little darlings’ parents to sue the schools into oblivion if they were to get a boo-boo from (gasp) falling down.
Yikes!

Great. More tax dollars to go for ‘poor’ kids’ breakfast, lunch and dinner so the imperial federal government can just cut out the middle man (a.k.a. the parent(s))and raise good little members of the liberal proletariat will do anything (especially vote for you) if you’re stealing from the producer in the collective to hand it over to the moocher in the collective. After all, we’re not individuals anymore, we’re known as ‘groups’. I’d like for someone to explain to me why the ‘war on poverty’ has been going for about 50 years now and we suddenly have a childhood population that is obese? I’m confused.

maybe she should start with own children first before telling us how to feed ours . Last pictures of her 2 girls showed they could use some nutritional advise ,seems she is not doing job in own house so no wonder she wants government to do it for he,even President sneaks burgers when she is not around ,Not a good role model and maybe both should lay off expensive heavy res. meals ,They seem to indulge in quite often .

Does this mean that the food stamps, or SNAP, will be reduced for the families that have children being fed at school?

Obama abdicated the podium to former President Clinton on Friday because “I’ve been keeping the First Lady waiting for about half an hour, so I’m going to take off.”
And, today he signs a bill so he won’t be “sleeping on the couch.”
Is Obama blinking to the Secret Service that he is being “held hostage” by Michelle? Is he henpecked or an abused spouse? Something is up.
Michelle is looking like the heavy, on purpose or in reality…

What is so bad about seeing that children have good well balanced meals.
There are homes without bread, peanut butter or an apple to take for lunch.
Just because you have it doesn’t mean everyone else does.
I’m not too interested in the private affairs of the Obamas.
Hey Reaganite, that was the prez that slept thru cabinet meetings and asked his wife’s astrologist how to run the country.

If a kid’s parents are seeing to it that their kids are getting proper nutrition there is nothing wrong with being my brothers’ keeper and helping that child. They are innocent and good meals now mean good citizens later. Some would rather see food rot than give it away and alot of it does. Farmer’s get subidies not to grow food? Tell me what sense does that make?

Texas Granny, First Lady Michelle Obama said, “We can’t just leave it (deciding what American children should eat) up to the parents.”
Seriously. How elitist, how derogatory, how nanny state, how spiteful, how rude…
We’ve seen pictures of Michelle eating ice cream, eating pie, eating French fries… How dare she think she can decide what is best for other people’s children. What an overreach. What a joke.
If you keep taking away parental responsibilities, you are allowing for worse and worse parenting. Teach them to use their food stamps (SNAP) to buy jars of peanut butter and jelly and a bag of apples.
Teach parents how to make a sandwich and throw and apple in a bag if they really don’t know how. Hold them responsible for their kids. Don’t give them another excuse to ignore their responsibilities. Grrrr…

They must think we have a huge surplus in Washington,to keep spending like there is no tomorrow. The Democrats still don’t get it.Quit spending what you do not have!

All I can say is: This is the most absurd Act I have ever heard of. The Federal Government continues to cripple it’s own people by encouraging them to rely on them for life support. Soon, we will all be robots doing anything and everything the Federal Government says to do. This is pretty scary. What about the parents who “want” and “do” take good care of their own children? Where are our rights?

For those getting taxed to pay for other people’s food – what part of that is fair? What happened to adults being responsible for themselves and their own kids? I don’t mind helping people but when you have 42 million people getting fed with somebody else’s earnings – somebody (the taxpayer) is getting ripped off. That has gone way beyond helping some, to the point of screwing those getting taxed to pay for it.

“Mr. Obama will sign the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010″ – ABC News
More unnecessary Government Nanny State Spending that adds to the deficit and goes way beyond what the federal government is supposed to do.
Complete BS, 4.5 Billion down the drain.
This is exactly the type of programs that we need to cut.
Hopefully the new congress will forget to fund Michelle’s Bill.

Keep in mind two things:
1. This President promised to cut spending on programs that don’t work.
2. The First Lady is on record saying that the government can’t change the way you eat.
So we’re spending $4.5 billion to do something she says is impossible anyway, and he’s said we shouldn’t spend the money on things that won’t work.

It is true that every baby and child is different, some need more sleep than others, but here is a table indicative that many pediatricians recommend mothers to know how a baby should sleep on their age.
