President Obama
The New York Times’ David Hersenhorn and Sheryl Gay Stolberg: “Obama Defends Tax Deal, but His Party Stays Hostile” President Obama on Tuesday strongly defended his tax cut deal with Congressional Republicans against intense criticism from his own party, insisting it was “a good deal for the American people.” LINK

The Washington Post’s Perry Bacon Jr. and Scott Wilson: “Obama calls on liberal critics to learn to compromise” Before President Obama's Tuesday news conference, it was clear that his willingness to compromise with Republicans on extending George W. Bush-era tax cuts had left many liberal Democrats angry and dismayed. By the time the president stepped away from the White House podium 32 minutes later, it was equally clear the feeling was mutual. LINK

Newsweek’s Daniel Stone: “Obama Talks About Keeping It Real” The surest sign of an actual compromise? No one walks away happy. At least that’s the point the White House is pushing to sell the latest deal on tax cuts for high earners. In exchange, Republicans would green-light an extension of unemployment benefits that Democrats desperately needed votes to pass. Everyone wins a little something. LINK

The Hill’s Alexander Bolton and Mike Lillis: “Dem’s fury threatens tax cut deal” House and Senate Democrats reacted with fury to President Obama’s tax-cut deal with Republicans, threatening the package’s passage through Congress. LINK

The Washington Times’ Kara Rowland: “Obama fight Dems to defend tax-cut deal” Facing a backlash from Democrats over the tax-cut deal he struck with the GOP,  President Obama lashed out at members of his own party Tuesday, telling them not to let a partisan fight scuttle the chance to keep taxes low for middle-class Americans. LINK

Bloomberg’s James Rowley and Ryan J. Donmoyer: “Obama Tax Deal Leaves Democratic Leaders With Tough Sales Job” President Barack Obama’s tax deal with congressional Republicans left his top Democratic allies in the U.S. Congress grumbling yesterday, even as they gauged whether they could marshal support for an agreement they hadn’t signed off on.
