ABC News’ Huma Khan reports: Mark Sanford may have retired from public office, but he hasn’t quite yet retired from the public eye.
The former South Carolina governor, whose tearful admission of an affair became one of the top stories of summer 2009, was spotted last weekend vacationing with his Argentinean mistress.
Sanford admitted to the affair in June 2009 after he disappeared for nearly a week without informing anyone of his whereabouts. His staffers explained his absence to the media by saying he was hiking in the Appalachian trail, but the embattled governor was actually in Buenos Aires visiting his mistress.
Sanford later admitted his indiscretions in a tearful press conference.
Explicit e-mails released just hours after that announcement painted a picture of a torrid cross-border love affair, as Sanford agonized over their "hopelessly impossible situation of love."
Though he didn’t resign as governor and wasn’t impeached, the affair essentially cost Sanford, once considered a rising star in the Republican party, his career.
