Romney Wins New Hampshire Republican Party Committee Straw Poll

ABC News Political Director Amy Walter reports:

In the first ever “straw poll” of New Hampshire Republican party committee members sponsored by ABC News and WMUR and sanctioned by the state Republican party, ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney took 35 percent of the 276 valid ballots cast. This is just 3 percent more than Romney took in the 2008 GOP primary, when he finished in second place behind Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Coming in a distant second was Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, with 11 percent. Paul took 8 percent in the 2008 GOP primary.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who is spending the early part of next week in the Granite State, came in third with 8 percent.

In fourth place was ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has yet to visit the first-in-the-nation-primary state, with 7 percent.

This is by no means a scientific sample, but it was a good early canvass of the sentiments of the state’s most active Republican voters.

The “straw poll” was open only to the 426 registered members of the Republican committee, and 65 percent of those commitee members participated.

The take away: Romney’s still the solid frontrunner here, but there’s plenty of room for another Republican to break through here. Pawlenty’s showing was also impressive, given how new he is to the scene. He has, however, been working New Hampshire, as have his suporters.

The Republican committee members were also asked to pick the issue that was the “most important for the Republican nominee to focus upon”:

Reducing the size of the federal government: 49 percent
Reducing the size of federal debt/deficit 15 percent
Stimulating the economy to create jobs; 14 percent
Repealing health care: 7 percent

Final results of ABC News/WMUR/New Hampshire Republican Party Straw Poll.

  • Mitt Romney – 97 (35.14%)
  • Ron Paul – 29 (10.51%)
  • Tim Pawlenty – 21 7.61%)
  • Sarah Palin – 19 (6.88%)

  • Jim DeMint – 14 (5.07%)
  • Herman Cain – 11 (3.99%)
  • Chris Christie – 9 (3.26%)
  • Rick Santorum – 9 (3.26%)
  • Mitch Daniels – 8 (2.90%)
  • Newt Gingrich – 7 (2.54%)
  • Mike Huckabee – 7 (2.54%)
  • Mike Pence – 7 (2.54%)
  • Rudy Giuliani – 6 (2.17%)
  • Judd Gregg – 5 (1.81%)
  • Gary Johnson – 5 (1.81%)
  • Other – 5 (1.81%)
  • Donald Trump – 3 (1.09%)
  • Henry Barbour – 2 (0.72%)
  • Jon Huntsman – 0 (0.00%)
  • John Thune – 0 (0.00%)

If Romney wins the GOP nod,Odumbo will be assured of a second term…Does the Republican establishment EVER get it?>>>

The same tired old neo-cons trotted out again. If Dr. Paul does not get the nomination, this will be 2008 all over again. Neo-cons are just as brain dead as neo-liberals it appears.

If Romney wins the GOP nod and Obama wins a second term, it means that “republicans” don’t get it and are voting for something other than what makes economic sense. Romney could have toasted Obama in 2008 if he had won the primary because, as Obama admitted, he (Obama) does not understand economics and Romney not only understands it, he knows how to use it to improve business.

Posted by: karenjay | January 22, 2011, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

Any vote other then Ron Paul is a waste, and an admission that the voter has no understanding of the fundamental problems. No if’s and’s or but’s.

WHOOPIE!!!!!
So what????
He lives there, Romney will not get through the dog and pony show of the republican party. He is the father of this ObamaCare.

There goes the farm. Obama must be very pleased at New Hampshire’s choice of another John McCain who can’t quite seem to articulate exactly what it is he believes in.
That’s what happens when you throw principle to the wind and try to be all things to all people.
While I personally despise despot-light Obama he won the election by using a clear message of redistribution. Even though it means slavery to the people it sounded nice.
Whenever the people have a chance between a socialist/democrat/statist and a republican/corporate socialist the “gift giver” will always win.
When the so called, “republicans” can figure out what they stand for and learn how to access new media they may have a chance. As of today, a fat chance.

I think by the time the election rolls around Obama will have things so screwed up in America that Romney would crush him. So would Palin. Obama is the WORST president this country has EVER had. He’s a cocky, arrogant, elitist punk.

Another squishy Republican, another McCain, another Gulianni, another Gingrich, another Huckabee. Republican so called front runners are not saying anything to stir up even an old folks home Historically winning anything in N Hampsire is not a good sign, hope it stays this way. Where was the poll taken at the Rino zoo? Reducing the Federal Debt only drew 15 percent, which isn’t suprising, a continuation of the Bush years spending lunacy.

Interesting that Ron Paul beats two media darlings and gets virtually no mention. Isn’t that really the story here?

Posted by: Kevin | January 22, 2011, 5:24 pm 5:24 pm

Romney ran a state which allowed for socialised medicine that ran that state’s budget into te ground too. If romney wins it would just be another group voting for slick hair and a smile with no substance LIKE the people did in electing Obama. Time for some real thought and consideration as to what canidates say, what they have done and what they want to do.

Romney has learned from the Massachusetts Healthcare attempt. In liberal Massachusetts, Healthcare was going to happen whether he liked or not (veto override) so he did his best to steer it to be as feasible as possible. And he has never pretended that it reduced costs. Having learned from this experience, he is well equipped to navigate national healthcare solutions that are not single payer and not mandatory. People should get over their media-shaped, knee-jerk negative reactions to Romney. He knows and speaks economic recovery and free markets better than any one!

Wow, Drudge links a post, and the steep decline of the USA is apparent from the Obama haters and Palin lovers. If Palin thinks she can win a POTUS contest on Twitter and Facebook bring it on. The woman isn’t even able to hold a press conference or give an interview! LOLZ

IF ROMNEY chooses a conservative VP like Marsha Blackburn or Michelle Bachman, they will EASILY win. But Romney must be firm against illegal immigration and promise NO legalization of illegal aliens.

Romney is a PROGRESSIVE in a Republican costume. He doesn’t open his mouth without his finger in the air so he can say exactly what people want to hear regardless. NO! God NO! to Romney. It would virtually guarantee an Chairman O victory. There are many many Progressives disguised as Republicans. Beware and Be Aware. Until the Tea Party revolution this has been a one party system. Two sides of the same coin! Herman Cain for Prez!

Posted by: Inthiscorner | January 22, 2011, 5:29 pm 5:29 pm

Just more of the same, it is just really time for another party. Ron Paul would be the only choice in my opinion that could come close to saving this country, if its not already to late.

Posted by: Mark | January 22, 2011, 5:30 pm 5:30 pm

What about Paul Ryan? He is new, fresh, fiscally conservative and passionate about his job. I don’t think Americans want to see same old, same old.

Posted by: Kerry | January 22, 2011, 5:30 pm 5:30 pm

“Sponsored by ABC News” or Obamanews. Let’s dumdcrats choose a Republican(because they don’t know how to do it for themselves), or half liberal to go against Obama in 2012. Then you can split the vote, with the blacks, liberals and communists edging out victory for Obama again. People in this country just don’t get it. Obama will not win by acting centrist between now and 2012. People want jobs, jobs and jobs. Obama will lose against a real conservative in 2012, like Rick Perry.

Posted by: mark w | January 22, 2011, 5:31 pm 5:31 pm

Listen up all you republicans in Washington! No Romney. We want Ron Paul. Do you hear us out here. We sent you there and we can vote you back home just the same. No Mitt Romneys ever. He’s a looser you trotted out before and we do not want him now nor did we want him then. Get It?

Posted by: Linda | January 22, 2011, 5:31 pm 5:31 pm

Funny how Ron Paul (who hasn’t even announced)getting 11 percent is “coming in a distant second” while Pawlenty’s 8 percent is “impressive” More liberal and neocon media B.S.

Unfortunately the public will never get past his religion if he is the Republican nominee. It will be brought up as a topic and made public a week before the election. Then Obama will apologize for bringing religion into the picture and win the election.
The only republican that has a chance of winning can be Dr. Paul or Romney. Then who??

This should have stuck in 2008. Romney would have easily defeated Obama, (actually Hillary if it appeared Mitt would get the GOP nod). We never would have experienced the debacle that is President Obama. His economic policies according to a Harvard study costs more jobs than are “created or saved”. Despite Romney’s “failure” at creating a “universal healthcare” policy – it is important to note it was a State Democratic Party creation that Mitt attempted to modify as Governor. It is also important to consider Mr. Romney is not on record of repeating the same mistake nationally.

Romney
=======
cant win, he was railroaded during 2008
he was pushed off because he’s a Mormon
His debates were horrible, while his TV interviews were very good. Like two different people.
Palin
======
can’t win. While I believe she has been unfairly characterized by the left. She is too ‘in your face’. She seems too hyper.
Rudy Gulliani
=============
seriously, I hate the way this guy talks. He talks fast. His accent and talking style never sinks in.
Huckabee
========
talks too slow; he sounds impotent; he’s more like a pastor; not fully conservative. Way too monotonic! Too boring!
Ron Paul
========
more of a hick version of Ross Perot, maybe just poorer. While the Austrian Economic theory does make sense for America, his comments about it didnt come across very well. His voice is too jerky. Remember Ron, you’re talking to Americans, they are basically dumb people that like a simple flair and pretty looks and a pleasing night time radio voice. How can you make sticking sound bites off of words of vonMises?
McCain
======
was never a hero, he did not save anyone. He was in a foreign jail. Looks way too old, cant even raise his arms. His political fence riding and weird relationships with likes of Ted Kennedy on many bills was way too much for my stomach to handle. He was a pathetic candidate.
Gov Christie
==========
Yah right, good luck with that one.
We’re broke, we don’t have money too spend. Those are not words of genius, just the obvious.
We need leadership that not only takes us to zero deficit spending, but surpluses to start PAYING off the debt.
at this time there are no hopeful Republican, Independent, or Tea party candidates to win the presidential election in 2012

New Hampsire is meaningless since they allow folks to drive across the border from Mass. and vote in the primary….this is how McCain won it.

Posted by: William Randolph Smith | January 22, 2011, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm

Typical Alphabet soup lib-media using some insignificant straw-poll to attempt to instill doubt in the minds of red-blooded conservatives. Anyone who knows, knows Ron Paul is the obvious choice for freedom-loving patriots who want to stop this out-of-control spending machine. Don’t be fooled, when the time comes, constitutionally-minded conservatives will show the left what time it is, just like we did in November. “Give me liberty or give me death!”

Posted by: p4ndepravity | January 22, 2011, 5:54 pm 5:54 pm

Ron Paul will not win a national election. Paul has some great ideals, but he lacks the ability to see in shades of gray. He is most vulnerable in foreign policy issues. He is an old school conservative isolationist, and that kind of thinking would be devastating for our future. We need someone that agrees with Paul’s fundamental beliefs, but at the same time understands that reality is more complicated than theory.

Where has Romney been on all the major issues of the last months? NOWHERE! We dont want another NOWHERE man in the White House and that includes Jeb Bush and his racist outreach to Latinos. I was keen on Trump but now I hear he funded Rahm Emmanuel’s campaign in Chicago. If someone does not stop the rise of China by bringing in a 20% tax on imports. lock down the border, deal with illegal immigration, cut the size of government and the deficit then America is going DOWN THE TUBES! America must be run as a business for the benefit of its people and not multinational, transnational corporations.

I voted for Romney in the 2008 primary. He is a good man and he would be a wonderful president. He understands economics, understands the downfalls of obamacare style health care and he reeks of family values. He would get my vote hands down. We could do a lot worse than him.

He WON’T win in the South. He’s wrong fiscally and socially, as well as foreign policy-wise. As to Ron Paul fanatics, he’s wrong foreign policy-wise. Huckabee could stand to be a bit more Conservative as well. McCain’s a RINO. Giuliani, like Romney is a Progressive as well. Rick Perry (TX Gov) only got re-elected because he didn’t hurt Texas and the Dem wanted more taxes. Palin looks better to me all the time. At least she stands up for the Constitution whenever it is under attack. I could vote for Sarah Barracuda very easily…..

Herman Cain has fresh, business friendly ideas. He has a fantastic resume which includes being a CEO and an economist, and is a problem solver, not a politician. He is also a Fairtax proponent, which is the answer to many of the problems we face economically here in the states. He also is an eloquent speaker without a teleprompter as a crutch. I look forward to his candidacy.

End Wars – Bring MIC in check and balance
Audit the Fed
Real transparency

Stop wasteful government spending and deficits
Lower taxes
Rid the Patriot Act
Rid the EPA
Give the country back to the people and all freedoms and liberties due

Good to see Romney get this early boost. In my mind, his grasp of the economy (and what’s more, streamlining and fixing businesses in similar positions) and his very real, real world experience makes him uniquely qualified. Frankly, I doubt he’ll be able to get through the stupid “purity test” the parties push. If he can fix the economy, keep us strong, and establish a vision for American power in the next decade or two, I don’t care if he’s wobbly on abortion or initiated a health care plan in the most liberal state in the union. Priorities people.

Dear God,
Please help the Republicans find someone new to run for president. We’re tired to death of the same old, same old, has been politicians. We’ve heard everything they have to say and watched as programs they’ve made into laws just suck more money and more freedoms from our country. Surely there is someone out there who loves the Constitution and wants to steer the country back to a place where we actually live by it. Someone who believes in smaller government and less regulation, basically, someone who believes the opposite of everything our current president believes. There must be someone with new ideas and new vision to move us forward. Really God, if the Republicans can’t find someone to lead us who hasn’t already had their chance in office and blown it, then maybe you could just send Jesus back early and get us out of here? Thank you.

Didn’t Romney create essentially Obamacare in Massachusetts, aka Taxachusetts? And did I not hear him say he regrets doing it? Also, MBA from Harvard and JD from Harvard Law School do not enhance his resumeIMHO, this is what is wrong now, too many Harvard lawyers in the Democratic Party: Clintons, Obamas, Edwards (tee hee) Reid, Pelosi. And the coup de grace: 97% of the political contributions from the American Trial Lawyers Association goes to the Democrat Party, then you realize who is responsible for our medical and product costs being so high!

Palin is a nice little GOP sideshow, but honestly, who could possibly believe she has any chance of winning the GOP nomination? Ron Paul has some good ideas but he doesn’t realistically have a chance either. Romney’s business mind is what we need and he should have won it the first time. With the right running mate (not Palin!) he will easily beat Obama. When Pawlenty gets more exposure, he also has a good chance. I’d be very happy with either of these guys.

I hate to say this, but I would rather have control of the Senate in 2012 and re-elect Chairman Obama than to elect the charlatan Romney and keep the Senate Democrat. What we tea-party folks did wrong in 2010 is that we didn’t get rid of enough incumbent Republicans. They clearly are saying “We got the message” when they didn’t.

Posted by: woody | January 22, 2011, 7:38 pm 7:38 pm

No thanks to RINO Mitt Romney. Instead, Mike Huckabee is a natural treasure and more Americans need to recognize this. He’s funny. He’s witty. He has a lot of experience as a leader. We need a Reagan style leader and Iron Mike can do it. Support MH. Thanks.

I’m beginning to think 90% of the tea party has their GED and the other half don’t! ;)

Posted by: Wiley | January 22, 2011, 7:40 pm 7:40 pm

To the posers on here saying that a true conservative cannot win against Obama – that’s EXACTLY what liberals said about Reagan beating Carter. Just like the last election, the closer the GOP candidate is to TEA Party standards – the better chance he or she will have winning in a LAND SLIDE.

Huckabee is HORRIBLE!
He was a big spender. The Cato Institute gave him a D overall and an F in his last term.
He also gave criminals clemency even when Prosecutors said don’t do it. They got out and killed again and Huck let them out because his Pastor told him to.
Huckabee is a social conservative and a big spending liberal. He’s another George W. Bush. Bush borrowed and spent like crazy and he did nothing to control spending.

Mitt is the same old Progressive Republican ( aka John McCain) and no way in hell the “true” educated Concervative will vote for him. Ron Paul is the only hope for America, if you know him do your research because the media ( all of them ) will not support Paul, why? Well that would screw up the “system” in place. Wake up people Repubs and Demos are working together better learn about Dr Paul and support him. I promise you the Repubs will try to tear him apart.

Posted by: greg | January 22, 2011, 7:42 pm 7:42 pm

Are you kidding? The Republicrats think Romney is a good choice because he’s only slightly more conservative than Obama, so will appeal to all the idiot “undecideds”? Didn’t these morons learn from the McCain debacle?
The Republican Party is doomed by its own stupidity.

Posted by: dwr | January 22, 2011, 7:43 pm 7:43 pm

I for one am not surprised by this result. Romney is a candidate who makes sense. He isn’t some tea party creation that wants to only represent only a slim margin of Americans and not the rest. He is the only candidate I have seen in a long time that has the economic know how (literally people, there’s no disputing this) to turn this sinking ship of an economy around. The biggest concerns to the American people are not Romney’s weak points, they are his absolute strengths. The economy, the deficit, and the size of the federal government are only going to be resolved by a guy like Romney. He has the money so that he doesn’t need to sell his soul to be elected, and he made that money the American way, through intelligence, hard work, and determination. Bring 2012, Obama’s going down

Posted by: Palmer | January 22, 2011, 7:43 pm 7:43 pm

Wiley – “Tea Party” is singular so your grammar is wrong. The word “DOESN’T” is correct not “don’t”.

Posted by: Mike M | January 22, 2011, 7:44 pm 7:44 pm

Reagan beat Carter because the mood of the country was anyone but Carter and Carter had a tough primary challenge from Ted Kennedy.
It’w why Obama won. In normal circumstances Hillary would have won but the mood after Bush was any Democrat could win. Obama will not be weak enough to elect a fire brand Conservative.

We need a President that understands the economy. This is MITT ROMNEY or Herman Cain. We’re in a Global Economy and this is a very different situation for America.
We don’t need just another politician who who will play political economics. We need a business man.

Romney will not get the GOP nomination. His albratross is Romneycare in MA. Pawlenty and Romney will split the ‘Bull Moose’ part of the GOP. If Guliani gets in, it splits it further. Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin will split the Tea Party vote. People who liked what Newt did in the Contract w/America wil back him up, especially in Iowa. HE has been working there for years in a grass roots campaign. Daniels, unfortunately does not have name recognition. I believe that the dark horse of the primary is HERMAN CAIN. The dems will not know how to handle him. He’s a true fiscal and social conservative. HE has executive experience in getting jobs and turning a failed business around….just what America needs.

There seems to be a continuing claim that Obama is not a citizen of the U.S. Well, if he isn’t, then he was smart enough to beat the system and get elected President of the United States anyway! So, he must be at least as smart as his detractors!

Posted by: Henry J. | January 22, 2011, 7:49 pm 7:49 pm

I’m all for the mantra of the Tea Party Movement. That said, I have to judge Romney by what I’ve seen of him on C-Span (uninterrupted, non-soundbyte crap from the news).
He’s a brilliant man and can step away from the stump speech and go into great detail about what he believes and what he will do. He would have beat Obama in 2008 — but Florida threw the primary to McCain.
I think Romney is the best bet in terms of beating Obama in 2012. Things have changed quite a bit since Romney was governor, so I hope (and believe) he is smart enough to know that he will need to respond to the concerns of the 2010 voters.
Yes, I would like someone along the lines of a Ron Paul, but I just don’t see him getting mainstream support, and I’ve seen liberals tear him a new one a few times — he is not good at defending himself.

Why is everyone baggin on Romney so hard? If we are talking about a person who is qualified in economics on a grand scale, I can’t think of a better candidate. What the republican party is always lacking is a good communicator and I think Romney would do a great job.

Posted by: TK | January 22, 2011, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

We need a CONSERVATIVE with a track record of success. Mitch Daniels is THE no-brainer.
Otherwise, we need someone from the business world with a conservative background. Trump and Cain would both draw big crowds.

Romney’s accomplishments:
*Avoided Vietnam with a religious deferment – Disqualifies him for CIC
*Singlehandedly implemented gay marriage in Massachusetts, (not MA Supreme Court).
*Gave us Romneycare currently bankrupting Massachusetts and denying me my LIBERTY to choose whether or not I want insurance or just pay a doctor when I need one.
Romney is also pro abortion.

When the establishment Republicans and Democrats hate you, you must be doing something right. Ron Paul represents real change. If you watch the 2008 GOP debates again, it is amazing to see how poorly he was treated by his opponents and commentators.
2 years later, he is considered to be the “Tea Party’s Brain”, and his son is now the Junior Senator of Kentucky. If anyone won the 2008 GOP primaries, it was Ron Paul. The story here is that he won CPAC last year and finished second to Romney at the SRLC straw poll as well as in this NH straw poll. Ron Paul is a top-tier contender. and this time, he’ll have tens of millions of supporters behind him.
He is the only one who can defeat Obama, because he will bring in virtually all of the the constitutional conservatives, civil libertarians, independents, true progressives, and the anti-war Left disillusioned with Obama.

Posted by: Dan | January 22, 2011, 8:22 pm 8:22 pm

At this point before the 2008 election, Barack Obama was still just an afterthought. Nice win for Mitt, and he wouldn’t be the worst choice, but I guarantee a lot is going to happen between now and election 2012.
Interesting the Ron Paul has been the loudest advocate of the exact things that Republicans are looking for. AND he’s been saying the same thing for what, 30 years?
How is he still getting ignored?

Romney has the experience, Bain Capital (private sector), the Olympics (bureaucracy), and Massachusetts (hostile territory), needed to turn our country around. Things in Mass instantly started going bad after he left (3 of the top 5 companies left the state in the months after he left (GE, Fidelity, Intel/HP/Compaq not to mention the once promising fiber optic industry) He won or came in second in every primary state and had the most votes when he bowed out. McCain won all the blue states and Huckabee won enough of the red states. They tag teamed him to win and complained that he attacked them… waaahh. Is this what we have become?

Posted by: jimfact | January 22, 2011, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm

If you groupies or (libs) think that Paul can beat Obama, I question your age mainly, as this pure idealism. He, sadly comes off as a bit wacky, sadly as he does have some good ideas, As for Mitt, Do any of you true Repub’s really believe that Mitt, a Republican could have ever been elected in Mass. if not for his ability to beat the Dem’s at their own game? Come on! Reminds of all the knuckleheads that almost elected Gore in 2000? Why because the yahoos stayed home when the Lib. Media disclosed an old DUI a few days before the election, thus the S.FL. bullcrap as to hanging chad’s, but most of you may not remember. Take this as a positive and try to look at the bigger picture, not the B_____ Belt ones that don’t know the bible was translated into English 1500 years afterward. So say it, the Lord! Be real, if you want “O” out in 2012. Or Try making a fist hold with your other had a few inches from your face and hold it as tight as you can, then let go and see if you punch yourself in the nose? That’s what will happen, like the b belt in 2000 almost did?

Ron Paul supporters do more to malign and misrepresent Republicans like Romney than Liberals do. They’re generally extremists that support candidates like Ron Paul who don’t have any real viability in a general election.
Romney is the only candidate with the economic/business experience to dig American out of the hole that Bush started and Obama widened with all his might.
Hopefully Repubs have learned from, and repented of, their McShame support in 2008. We’ll see if they have opened their eyes enough to recognize the best candidate since Ronald Reagan. Of course, it took a Jimmy Carter to open America’s eyes then too.

As a famous rapper recently lamented: “It’s about Liberty right now, and they are trying to take ours away. Ron Paul is the only one that cares about the people.”
Dr Paul has the best track record, the soundest policies, and the best chance at restoring us back to our Constitutional heritage. Run Ron Run! Ron Paul 2012!

There is no doubt that the GOP nominee will be neither Romney or Paul. You can also eliminate Huckabee and Gingrich. Palin is unlikely as well.
Fortunately, other talent is waiting in the wings.

Same old crap. The left is pushing Romney hard because they know Obama beats him easy. It was the media that gave us McCain in the last election. When will conservatives stop listening to the media. It is time to stand up and elect the person we want despite what the media says. No one trust the media anyway.

Mitt is smart, has been a success in business and has been the best at taking failures and turning them into successes.
We need a man with experience who willmlead us forward.
Mitt Romney will be a wonderful President!

I think the movie “idiocracy” is where we’re heading…

Posted by: Jason | January 22, 2011, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm

Romney is a true conservative; not just in rhetoric as many of the rest, but in the way he lives his life. Out of the 8 prominent GOP candidates, he’s the only one capable of defeating Obama. Any of the true conservatives who say they won’t vote for him are just bluffing; they won’t back Obama, and they won’t stay home, because only someone who had no desire to improve their nation would make that choice (y’all ended up voting for McCain despite what you claimed, and he’s a jive talking Globalist Turkey!). Unless Pence decides to enter the race, or Santorum gets more traction, Romney is the only man who can win the GOP Primary and the General election.

Posted by: FRank | January 22, 2011, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

Yeah, look who the article said, voted. Insiders. I’m not buying this rigged poll. Ron Paul/Judge Napolitano is a ticket I could vote for!

Posted by: Jean | January 22, 2011, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

Some of you saw polls that showed if McCain had picked Romney they would have beaten Obama in 2008; yet you still think Palin helped McCain because he lost by less than he could have.
There’s a significant difference between winning and losing by a smaller margin than you could have.

Posted by: wiley | January 22, 2011, 9:55 pm 9:55 pm

PS: Romney doesn’t live in NH, never has, and he didn’t even win the Primary there in 2008. This straw poll win is substantial because none of the others can get or keep enough people behind them. In the 8 other states that have had GOP polls this year, Romney won 7. Unless all the non-Romney supporters decide on which candidate to back, this exact senario will play out across the country in the 2012 Primary!
KERRY: Paul Ryan is a great guy, but he’s way too young to be elected President in 2012.

Posted by: FRank | January 22, 2011, 9:58 pm 9:58 pm

Already the Progressives in the Republican Party are working with the Leftists in the Media to push Romney on us.
If he intends on running for President, where the hell has he been for the last two years?
Johnny-Breeze-In needs to be vocal and visible NOW, not just when campaigning.

Posted by: RogerCfromSD | January 22, 2011, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

Let’s see, Romney was VALEDICTORIAN at BYU when he graduated (having transferred from STANFORD to be w/ his High School sweetheart). He graduated from HARVARD with a LAW degree (JD) AND an MBA in the TOP percentile IN BOTH programs AT THE SAME TIME. He was Vice President of the company that hired him (from an internship while in college) IN 4 years. He started his own company and was a world reknowed TURN AROUND SPECIALIST for failing businesses, becoming very wealthy. Why would anyone want such a poorly qualified man as President, when we can have a “community organizer” (nee- communist agitator) who NEVER held a REAL, full-time job IN HIS LIFE?
Who would trust a guy like Romney that doesn’t lie, drink, smoke, dance, or swear??……..

Posted by: Todd P. | January 22, 2011, 10:01 pm 10:01 pm

Romney is probably the most brilliant person ever to run for the office of President. Last time he was passed over because Democrats hated Bush, and Republicans rebelled against his amnesty and fiscal irresponsibility as well. It’s a different ball game now, and Romney is our heavy hitter. He’s set to hit it out of the park, and America knows it.

If Romney isn’t nominated and elected, you can pretty much kiss the USA goodbye. His expertise, shown via Bain Capital and the 2002 Winter Olympics, has been to take troubled enterprises and make the changes needed to make them successful. I don’t care that he’s not glib, have star quality of any of the other irrelevant qualities our recent (and current) leaders have exhibited that have put us in the situation we’re in. The man is a competent executive. Not perfect, but eminently competent. Why don’t we give competence a try for a change??

People need to get off the internet and go meet real people! Palin and Ron Paul have no chance to win the GOP Primary let alone the General. The only way either of them will be in the 2012 General is as the 3rd Party “Perot” who helps Obama get re-elected. Come to think…maybe that’s why Palin is working with Ed Rollins, who engineered the Perot Campaign for Don Tyson, Sam Walton & Win Rockefeller to help Clinton get elected and open trade with China!?

Posted by: FRank | January 22, 2011, 10:08 pm 10:08 pm

i wouldn’t read to much into this. Only a “heavyweight”
wins the nod. Romney couldn’t beat McCain (and that should have been easy). Sarah is not going to run.
Odds are against her (unfortunately). Only 3 “heavyweights” that we have are Cheney, Jeb and Quayle. Cheney is not well and beyond his time…my prediction is the 2 other class horses jump in late in the race.

Joe, Romney WAS beating/overtaking McCain until they came to Florida and the GOP machine here run by Crist & Co did him in and sided with McCain. If Romney had won Florida we would have President Romney today. You see how well Crist’s judgment proved out; right? Now Romney has quietly built/bought the machine. Seems like he’s just being smart to me instead of whining about getting outfoxed.

HE declined and raised enough capital to put the Olympics into the black.. Present the most successful Winter Olympics ever with the WORLD watching and countries participating .. etc. it is one great story .. He cleaned up the corruption, etc .. He will have to make the case and explain MA … Tim Pawlenty has an incredible record.. when he left office in MN in DEC .. Unemployment in MN wast at only 7% . He knows the issues.. has solutions . Not a psychohype Media start like palin .. but he has the right stuff . BOTH have Political courage and are intelligent .. Palin appears to be “challenged” “lamestream media” “drill baby drill” “lipstick on a pig ” ” I can see Russia from my house ” .. etc. etc.. Obama is planning a 1 billion dollar campaign.. Posted by: DJESQ | January 22, 2011, 10:52 pm 10:52 pm

This is ridiculously early. And this result has to be considered as unfairly tilted toward Romney who is from the neighboring state.
The true talent pool and big names have yet to fully emerge. Romney is a flip-flopper, Paul is fruitcake, Palin is merely effective as a cheerleader-sometimes, Gingrich is delusional. Pawlenty, Jindal, Thune, Barbour, Thompson, Giuliani and more have not emerged yet.
An interesting tidbit that seemed impossible 2 years ago is that the growing doubt about Obama’s birth location may actually put him out of office, although that seems remote and almost unthinkable. But it is now possible. Clear and convincing evidence of his birth elsewhere would immediately justify his removal from office. That would Constitutionally make John McCain president. Far-fetched? No. It is a logical consequence of Obama’s proven ineligibility. That is a twist on the next election.
I don’t know what McCain would do if he saw clear evidence that Obama was born abroad. McCain was born on American soil in the Panama Canal Zone and is indisputably qualified Constitutionally. I would like to see him become involved in ascertaining the truth about Obama.

Love the way the media denegrates Ron Paul all the time. The guy is 100 percent right about everything wrong with government in this country. Romney’s 35 percent when only 65 percent voted is not a mandate. The way they treat Ron Paul supports I bet they were not allowed to vote. When the real campaigns starts you will see Ron Paul dominate the debates, again. Ron Paul is the real Tea Party, NOT the Neo-con hacks that glommed on and destroyed the party.

There is a big difference between being a big “C” Conservative – someone who believes in the values of classical liberalism that America was founded on, small frugal limited government, free enterprise, low taxation, and empowerment of the individual (not the government) to make the important choices in their lives – and a small c conservative p someone who wants stability, tradition and maintenance of the status quo without understanding why. Bush was a small c conservative – a patriot and nationalist who was pro-capitalism but did not understand the principles and made overly-expansive imperial decisions that weakened the nation. Romney appears to be intelligent, articulate and a small c conservative but not to be someone who can be relied on to do the right thing in a principled manner to keep America in alignment with its historical nature and to avoid the progressive tendency to empire. Palin by nature is a big C Conservative but has not done the homework to be fluent enough in the issues to to make informed decisions. Ron Paul is a true big C Conservative, a knowledgeable thoughtful man although it is not clear whether he has the fire in the belly and the alpha-male strength to be President. Pawlenty is undefined at this point. I hope a lot more Republican candidates enter in to give us a real competition.

Romney, Newt, Huckleberry have nothing to do with the Republican rebirth in the House. So those arrogant, self serving people should stop wasting money and not even thing about pursuing a run.
Palin has pretty much hijacked Tea party history. In reality it started with groups of leaderless people protesting taxes, corruption, and spending.
Newt has tried to hijack this movement as well by comparing it to his mid 90s take over of the house.
Newt is fat, slow and sluggish, hardly the person to re-vitalize the country!

Many existing laws and regulations apply specifically to pregnant women. Several provisions of the Affordable Care Act offer new benefits for expecting mothers. Search online for “Wise Health Insurance” if you need affordable insurance for yourself or your wife.

Ron Paul gets second place despite no backing by big banks or global corporations… I hope people wake up and do their best to understand why things are the way they are. If they do, they will understand that Ron Paul is the only major candidate who desires the America that set the standard for the world.

Was Mike Huckabee even on the ballot? In almost every poll, he is the leading candidate. Are ABC News and ” The Note ” Pushing the weakest candidate the Republicans could possibly run, Mit Romney? The only line in this article that is true is “This is not a scientific sample”.I can’t wait till Iowa.

The Republican committee members were also asked to pick the issue that was the
“most important for the Republican nominee to focus upon”:
Reducing the size of the federal government: 49 percent
Reducing the size of federal debt/deficit 15 percent
Stimulating the economy to create jobs; 14 percent
Repealing health care: 7 percent
————————————–
Just to show how stupid they are, don’t mention,
“no path way to citizenship for illegals” in their most important issues.
Forget about Ron Paul, he has no chance.
Do not support a looser.
Sarah Palin is the only one that has a chance against Obama.
She is the one that was totaly responsible for the Republics taken the House.
It sure in the hell was not Ron Paul

We’re scroomed. Anither RINO. We’ll win in 2012 no matter who runs (the economy will be worse than it is today), so we ought to nominate the most fiscally conservative candidate possible. No, it will not cost us the election. What good is winning if you’re just gonna keep spending like crazy, as Romney will? Not to mention we need someone who would SIGN it if we pass a repeal of Obamacare in both houses.

Posted by: Kurtiss | January 23, 2011, 1:45 am 1:45 am

Some great comments here and some pretty dumb ones too.
I loved the comment about Romney not having any substance…the smartest guy to every run for POTUS and some know-nothing thinks he has no substance.
Another good one was the comment about Romney being the father of Obamacare. Say what? States have to power to set up a health system anyway the citizens choose. The Feds have no such power and from what I understand, the Massachusetts program was not crammed down anyone’s throats.
Ron Paul will never be POTUS votes for him are wasted. Palin is not ready, nor are the other young guns. Give them time. Romney is seasoned and ready and once they understand his values, the tea party will embrace him all the more. He will be the next president

Posted by: Ron | January 23, 2011, 1:48 am 1:48 am

I think Huck is the most likable among the bunch but no chance because of releasing criminals who killed police officers.
Ron Paul, Romney, whatever. There is no politician in any party who can fix the economy. We cannot compete with folks who work for $2 – $5 a day period. The huge off-shoring of jobs is slowly killing us as companies are now finding out. Fewer jobs in the US means less tax dollars, less spending on products and services etc. Its a vicious circle.
We will become like Europe in 3-5 years . The government in power will have no choice but to expand social programs or face major issues at home.

No to Romney… Americans don’t want slick, smooth-talkers. His record is not clear if not downright contrary to conservative principles. As far as newer players, the problem is with credibility… you just can’t be sure what a Ryan, Bachman, or even Palin would do once in office. Ron Paul… straight-talker with 30+ years voting exactly. the. same.

After a poor showing for President the first time and dropping out after lying to the citizens of Michigan, it seems Mitt just needs the campaign money. Mitt showed he can’t get California after endorsing Meg Whitman in her big lost. No one even listen to Mitt. Mitt kept silent about his immigrant employees. Mitt did say if he was President he would let his lawyers run the White House because he would have to take care of his businesses. Looks like the Republicans and Tea Party are now one Party and have joined together. Maybe Mitt will ask Sarah to be his running mate too.

Posted by: Jackie | January 23, 2011, 2:28 am 2:28 am

Who cares?
He’s anti-Tea party, therefor he wont be getting a large chunk of the voting populations vote…
besides, the last thing we need right now is another party politics game player. We need an American loving constitutionalist in office.

To “post american”
ya, well, if obama can get in without having run a damn thing in his life, having absolutely no experience, and being as completely secretive as hes been about who he is and where hes been, then a Sarah Palin would be a damn site better (even though shes not who i would vote for).

Sigh, more non-news from the propaganda wing of the DNC… polls about polls that aren’t even polls (rather “straw” polls)… I have a novel idea, instead of making up stuff and pretending its news, how about reporting something of substance (after it actually happens) and give the faux intel center (DNC pipedream machine) a break.

Posted by: Soul Leister | January 23, 2011, 3:14 am 3:14 am

No to just about everyone mentioned.
Romney is McCain with a fuller head of dyed hair.
Palin is wonderful, but a Quayle.
I want to see a Governor or ex-Governor get it, someone with executive experience, not just a Senator.
So, for me, I think the best choice would be:
Texas Governor Rick Perry at the top of the ticket, and maybe Nikki Haley of South Carolina, or Jan Brewer of New Mexico, or Susanna Martinez of Arizona as the Veep.

Posted by: craigintwincities | January 23, 2011, 3:20 am 3:20 am

I like Romney. What’s not to like? He’s run through the learning curve Obama seems to be stuck in. He’s got a good mind, he’s business savvy, thinks USA 1st, and can out-dance the best from Europe, S. America and Asia…and just maybe we’ll get our damn borders secured. Fresh and new he’s not…thank you for small favors!
Dad used to say about elections during a crisis period…”Son, you don’t change horses in mid-stream”, but with Obama I don’t think I can get off that horse quick enough.

If the economy is not rebounding stronger than it is now in late 2012, Romney will have enhanced chances because of his perceived “business success.” Of course, having a father whose contacts and name get you clients you can “advise” while they pile up favors owed in political establishments is hardly business success!
It’s like G W Bush living in a town where one out of every 16 people is an oil millionaire, yet running six consecutive companies into bankruptcy while taking insider loans, then getting Daddy to arrange for you to get a piece of the Texas Rangers for $700,000 (as if the owner needed it!) then selling it back for $7M (the taxpayer provided the difference in economic incentives for the Rangers) and being labeled a “successful businessman.”

Perhapsyou don’t get it – who gives a damn if someone’s African-American – I want a Constitutionally qualified, OPEN (not spending millions hiding their past), fully vetted by the currently heinously irresponsible media, competent, economically sound, ethically stalwart candidate who isn’t afraid to say No – who isn’t afraid to use documented facts to out the scumbags no matter who they are, who isn’t afraid to point out how raising spending through the roof and then pointing the finger at someone looking for tax cuts as the real problem is dishonest. Someone who isn’t day one looking to run again, (or in some cases continue running). Someone who will encourage people to do better, to help each other, to exceed and to overcome – not someone who will seek to mandate it through law or rhetoric. The problem is these misguided people elected someone because of his color, and the foolish platitudes and flowery speech some of which he heisted, some of which he wrote, all blended into some sort of ‘garbagey’ feel good nothingness.

Romney was the first one to start running in the last election too. Spent a lot of time in Iowa and is the favorite of the old time republicans.
May I ask why is he not helping his party by putting forth ideas to improve the economy and job growth? – his strong suit. He could also be helping himself by attacking what is wrong with the Health care law (Obama Care) as Huckabee (sp) is doing. That would blunt the criticism of his Mass. Health care bill.
Independents had better start registering as republicans so that they can have a say in the primaries in closed states or we will end up with a weak candidate.

This is a very small sample of less than 300 party committee members so it is not a sample of all New Hampshire GOP primary voters. Party activists are no necessarily opinion leaders any more. I know many primary voters in many states who cheerfully vote against the wannabe party elitists just because they do not trust the elites to be acting in an altruistic and unselfish way that puts principle first. Most primary voters are just voters who work in the private sector and they are not like the self-selected party insiders who are always hustling for political jobs for themselves.

The so called news media will have orgasms over this for a few weeks. It’s called the McCain syndrome… Help elect a Republican that Obama can be. The safest way to pick a candidate is take the candidate that CNN Gallop, msnbc, ABC, CBS dispel and condemn and they will be the best for America. Remember Obama is their boy.

Secondly, if the Big Government Establishment Republicans nominate another RINO like McCain or Dole or Gingrich or Romney, you can count those of us in the Tea Party out.

Posted by: Susystin | January 23, 2011, 11:17 am 11:17 am

No more liberal mutts! And that goes double for Mutt Romney. Its time to break the grip that liberal states like NH and Iowa have had on the nominating process. Palin is the only one of that list of dreary egotists who is in the fight; who stands up and opposes the welfare state every day. The rest just want to run it and maybe get it to expand a little slower. The rest of these Republiclowns have to stand up and fight the libs if they want any respect. The party bosses might like them but those are the same party bosses who pushed LOSERs like Dole and McCain. The Republiclown establishment has one more chance; they either respect their conservative base or have a third-party mutiny. No Mutts, no Pawlentys no more liberals!

The RINOS are no better than the Dems, wake up people! Romeny is not eligible on the same grounds Obama is not. Both are sons born of foreign nationals at the time of their births.
BOTH parties mean to dismantle constitutional law. BOTH parties operate on their construct that there is NO LONGER a sovereign USA and we are all “world citizens.” And they push “world citizens” for POSTUS in a deliberate assault on our nation and system.
ABC DO YOUR JOB! EXPOSE THE FRAUD!

Lots of naive comments on here. Ron Paul, Paul Ryan, blah blah blah. They are not going to beat Obama. Mitt Romkney can, and heres why. Its going to take a dog doo load of money to beat Obama. It also is going to take someone with lots of business experience, good looks, a family that looks presidential, and an articulate man who pulls no punches to beat Obama. Romney can do it.

Posted by: robertv | January 23, 2011, 11:23 am 11:23 am

I’ve seen comments like, Why isn’t he helping, Why isn’t he putting out ideas on economics, blah blah. You must live under a rock. Romney has been all over the country for over a year. He’s been the most active, involved, and largest financier on the grassroots level in the election.
Do you remember Steele just getting dumped on because the RNC didn’t raise enough money? How do you think all your tea party candidates got elected; your magic thoughts? It takes money and organization. The man has already done more for this country by helping to get Rubio in the Senate instead of Crist than any of you will ever do. Get off your sofas and join the man’s PAC. Who else do you know that has over 3/4′s of a million people donating right now!
You’re not seeing Romney bc you aren’t looking. Romney had an excellent 17 page proposal for HC that did not look like Mass. It was real reform and would stop the growth in HC costs. He was bashed because he used PowerPoint to explain it. It was brilliant, but people were too impatient to listen, learn, and make intelligent choices. Some of you are just making things wosse by attacking the man from the Right. You really think if Reagan were here he would tell you to attack Romney; NOW; at this point in history; with our economy in shambles? Are you people completely nuts?
Sure he’s a Mormon. What that means that is relevant is he’s been married, faithful, honest, and a good father/husband for about 40 years. It doesn’t matter if/where he tithes or prays – as long as he prays. His wife adores him and respects him. Find another man that will run for president who is really loved and respected by the person who knows him best and I’ll vote for that person. I will say Todd seems to respect Sarah, but he doesn’t hang on her every word waiting for her to same something brilliant like Romney’s wife does. We need someone with real experience. Romney is the only man running who could go in a room with the insurance companies, the medical industry/lobbyists, and others, and come out with the best deal. He’s a realistic deal maker and a turn-around expert. We need BOTH. Obamacare won’t be repealed without the industries that got perks going along for the ride, pharma and Medi-gap (AARP). American is democratic-corporatism. You can complain about it or you can win and try to reform it. Romney can win that game and he can reform that system.

If all you gullible voters didnt fall into the “Bob Dole” trap with Old Man McCain to begin with, we may not have had this socialist in the Whitehouse destroying our country, “my friend”.

Posted by: robertv | January 23, 2011, 11:26 am 11:26 am

Ah yeah, I remember last year when obamacare was jammed through congress and the tea party was smeared as racist. Mitt Romney defended his supporters….. oops, by not saying anything.
And then two weeks ago when conservatives were blamed for causing the shooting in Arizona. Mitt Romney gave a public statement…. er, no he didn’t.
Conservatives aren’t stupid. We know a fair-weather politician when we see one. Romney can stay in NH for all I care.

Posted by: redredconservative | January 23, 2011, 11:29 am 11:29 am

Poor America. Reason and history have both demonstrated socialism is a deadly cancer on man’s spirit, yet we’ve put a socialist in the Whitehouse, and now the Republicans would run their own Socialist-lite version. Over one million American soldiers died for the ‘dream’ of our Founders, and to give us all a shot at that dream; it’s apparent they sacrificed their lives for nothing.

I have a challenge for all you Ron Paul supporters, who, by the way, I DO understand!
Please devote your energies to a serious candidate. Ron Paul will NEVER be President, ever. While you are willing to overlook his crackpot tendencies, the rest of the country will not. So, get over it.
We DO have some potential candidates who will satisfy you, but they need help to overcome the Republican “establishment” and the media desire for yet another sacrificial lamb to Obama.
Mitch Daniels, Herman Cain, and even Donald Trump would wipe the floor with BHO and could unite the country. Look into these people. Some of them even agree with Paul on some of his views!

As a conservative I like Mitt Romney but I’m still on the sidelines regarding some of his policies.
If he wins the Republcan nomination I hope he doesn’t choose Sarah Palin. I like her very much but thanks to the leftist liberal media clowns I think she has become unelectable in most peoples eyes. Michelle Bachmann would be a better choice.

I am not calling Trump a “conservative”, but many of his views are libertarian. And, he certainly understands business and is disgusted with the way the rest of the world treats us, as well he should be.
I have not committed to Trump, but I do know he is a good guy who cares about people and is pro-business. You would also never see him bowing to tyrants!

Truthfully, it’s most of you hard-core conservatives that don’t get it. It’s time to WIN the election and remove Obama. Republicans will vote for whoever is the nominee, but the moderates will not, unless he’s “attractive”…yes, you heard me. If Obama was an unattractive person, he wouldn’t have been elected…PERIOD! People who don’t pay attention vote with their eyes, that’s why McCain never had a chance. If we trot out some non-telegenic person again, WE LOSE. In this visual-media driven age, the candidate must LOOK like a president in a Hollywood movie…I hate it too, but it’s the current reality.

Curious that only 276 votes cast by the committee members in a state that prides itself on being 1st in the nation. Where were the other 150 voters? What could cause them not to vote at all?
This straw poll clearly means nothing despite Amy Walter’s attempts to boost its significance.

Wow– seeing these names really does a heart good. I’m not saying the 2000 crop was uninspiring, but it’s clear that Republicans are now back on message. I think with a Jim DeMint or Chris Cristi or Marco Rubio or Herman Cain as his running mate, Romney might just stand a chance. On the other hand, any of those and others could make a viable run at the top of the ticket–it’s early yet. I’ve got my eye on Thune, maybe not for this upcoming election but for 2016 or 2020.

Romney is an extremely capable businessman and has an impressive presence as a public personna. That being said, he is a shameless panderer, who changes his positions and stories to appeal to the audience at hand. When running for governor for MA, he campaigned women’s right to choose, and gun control with respect to assault weapons. He presided over the MA health care legistlation, which most closely resemebles the national plan that was passed last year. As expected, he resigned the governorship to run for public office. In doing so, to appeal to a conservative audience, he flipped completely on abortion, told the NRA he was a “life-long hunter” (yeah…of squirrels). He even told the NAACP that he “walked with Martin Luther King” and then explained that he meant it in a figurative sense. The MA governship was just a stepping stone to his big aspiration, which is to be President. As capable as Romney is as a businessman, I find him a total fraud as a politician, showing no consistency or character. Conservatives will nominate him at their own peril.

Posted by: Martin Kendrick | January 23, 2011, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

If Romney gets the nomination the GOP can just fold their tent and be relegated to teh dustbin of history. Do the pols in charge EVER learn from Dole, McCain etc. It’s not about who’s turn it is now. They think the Tea Party has fallen for them hook line and sinker. They cannot beat Obama without the Tea Party support and they will never vote for Romney no matter how he spins the Mass Health Care experiment (read failure).

Posted by: delquattro | January 23, 2011, 1:23 pm 1:23 pm

This doesn’t mean squat about Romney. Of course, people in NH are going to vote for a New Englander. Ron Paul won the Southern Republican Leadership Conference poll last year and I can personally attest to the fact that it was only because he had his people there in mass numbers to show up and vote. Romney will not be the nominee. I don’t think anyone can get the nomination without Tea Party support. It’s just not gonna happen.

As about 85% of the voting public vote by name recognition only, the Republicans have to put up a candidate that is world known and that would be Donald Trump. He also has the business savvy and the guts to take on Obama. He would be tough enough to win.

Find it funny how folks on this forum state that Mormon’s are a cult. One definition of cult is “a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.” which would make any religion a cult. However, Mormon is not the name of the religion it is the name of a Book. The name is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”. Those Christians who say that “Christians” will stay home they don’t understand the meaning of the Church. Look at the name. Jesus Christ is in the name so it is Christian. Now I am not a Mormon and I feel this way. Everyone has the right of Religion..
As for Romney… He has family values, he knows economics and can help lead as a republican this country out of recession that started with Clinton’s everyone should be able to buy a house. I agree with Clinton’s statement but he went about it wrong.

Romney is a smart, articulate, pro-capitaist leader – major improvement over Obama since he has actually built real businesses – BUT while he is a small c conservative leader in the sense of being interesting is stabilizing and maintaining the status quo in America, he is not a big C Conservative who wants to “conserve” the philosophy of classical liberalism America was founded on – small frugal limited government, free enterprise, low taxation and empowerment of the individual not the government to make the important decisions in his/her own life and the lives and values of their family. Ron Paul is a big C Conservative but it is not clear he is able to lead and he may end up as pathetically ineffective as Obama. I hope we will see a competition of many more Conservatives to get some real choice. This is not a selection I want made by party insiders who are small c conservatives but not big C Conservatives.

It’s so amusing to see the mainstream media once again pushing their hand-picked corporate stooges. Mitt Romney, they RINO neocon, gave us Romney care and supports endless war and empire to enrich his buddies. He was caught cheating at the Florida strawpoll in 2007 -
Ron Paul is the champion of the Constitution, has never voted for a tax increase and was the most vocal opponent to the bailouts that Romney, McCain and Obama all supported wholeheartedly. More recently, Ron Paul’s legislation to audit the Federal Reserve exposed that the Fed gave trillions of dollars to foreign banks.
Seems like a pretty obvious choice to me. I stand with Ron Paul.

I believe that many have forgotten, that one reason for the TEA PARTY formation after the 2008 Repub. primaries was that Mitt Romney was set up to lose by the Good Ole’ Boys (not his turn), thus Guliani ran only in Fl. as did Fred Thompson, just to make certain that Mitt could not come in first and as a result McCain again took first, Mitt second, for the third time. Do you really believe Fred Thompson (running only in Florida like Guliani were serious??) No to romney, no to Gingrich, no to all those RINOs who couldn’t even beat McPain in the primary.
Bachman, Palin, Ryan, all good…but best would be Rand Paul. I didn’t think so in 2008, but now, with everything so screwed up, and his predictions coming true left and right…he’s about the only one who could do what we need done.

Frankly, I thought they were sensoring me, but, truth is they have not and have allowed open communication throughout. I’m truly pleased being wrong on this issue.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Romney enacted health care in Massachusetts that very closely resembles Obama Care, including the taxpayer funding of abortions. He also couldn’t answer a simple question on Jan Michelson’s radio program on WhoRadio. When Jan brought up Mitt’s Mormon faith, Romney went ballistic. If he gets the Republican nomination, he will likely try to outdo Obama on destroying this nation.

Some of you may be better off with some good ole snake handling Christians with a mail order Christian Collar, but no!! Not a person from the Church Of Christ of latter Day Saints, the book of Mormon is a religiuos book, not a religion, look it up. But snakes, fiddles, and dancing seem more Christian or pardoning Murderers? I think I’m going to change parties or hope that most of these blogs have been by LIberals as a hoax, knowing the intelectual level of most ……

I will never vote for a RINO! If the Republicrats nominate Romney Obama will be a two term President. Romney is the media / insider choice for the Republican candidate which is all you need to know. I’m praying that Jim DeMint runs…I would stand by him through thick and thin.

Paul Ryan is absolutely great, and would run circles around Obama in any debate. However, he has already decided that the demands of his young family preclude a presidential run right now. Wait a few years. Also, Romney has far more executive experience than Ryan. Romney is far more conservative than people imagine. He went along with MassCare because the Dem. legislature of that state had the ability to override any veto. Even so, the states are free to adopt any health care arrangement they want, whereas the federal constitution contains no grant of authority over personal health care to the national government. Romney understands that, and does not support a federal health care scheme.

Human Problems are Technical not Political, our approach to solving human problems is deeply flawed and is not curable by doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. The system itself is corrupt coupled with our culture and cancerous value system…..voting will do nothing.

Love most of these comments folks! You give me hope for our nation! NH is RHINO-ville! Sarah Palin and Ron Paul are the only possible candidates ready to serve up a can of
political “WHOOP-ASS! We don’t need another John McCain or Mitt Romney. We need a PATRIOT with FIRE IN THEIR BELLY!
Someone who will get in the White House and say “I’ve come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass…and I’m all out of bubble-gum! Take no prisoners! YEAH! God bless the USA!

Hear the voice of reason and listen to Ron Paul. He speaks the truth and will bless our country back to prosperity. I have showed Paul to everyone I know. The Revolution of ideas is coming and Ron Paul is the tip of the spear. His message brings everyone together. When he speaks you know hes not lying to you. I will take off from work to campaign for Ron Paul, because I want real change. Please youtube Ron Paul and give him a chance.

Ron Paul is a must for the survival of the American Economy. Mitt Romney is just another Elite that will be no diffrent than Bush or even Obama. Please wake up people… America cannot take another four years of an economic downfall. Ron Paul 2012!!!

Sorry D—–, but a Ron Paul nomination would mean “O” through 2016 plus 8 more to any numb scull the Lib’s choose.
Wrong time, wrong age, wrong experience, right rhetoric. NH folks did their homework before voting, which is not the norm in middle America. It’s usually, ” Go ya Bears, Jets, Giant Trucks, or snake handling?
And we critize Hollywood types? I’m starting to get weary!?

RomneyCare is not a federal mandate, it is not UnConstitutional, it does not set up a Federal Takeover of HC, it re-allocated money already being spent to provide access to HC through private providers. Good grief! How gullible to the meda some of you are who claim to be Conservatives.

Let me add that electing RINO Romney is akin to re-electing Obama. There would be virtually no difference in policy.

Posted by: zack | January 23, 2011, 9:13 pm 9:13 pm

Romney is an awkward phoney, at best. He’s not a Conservative Republican, but he’s a RINO.
During the 2008 election, Romney had to drop out of the race early, because he didn’t have strong support; he didn’t have enough incoming donations, so he had to rely primarily on his personal funds just to get by.
During the 2012 election, it won’t be any different for him.

If Romney is the GOP primary winner, Republicans lose my vote. I’ve decided to vote for Ron Paul, whether he runs or not. He’s the only one who seems to know what’s going on.

I don’t know why some people bother to post under so many different names. It’s really clear who they are.
Of the first ten posts here about six are by the same person.

If Romney gets the nomination, I will be voting third party again the the Republicans will fall once again to Obama. Please understand establishment Repubs, we don’t want McCain, Romney, Huckabee or even neocon in disguise Palin. They are the same old neoconservative trash that drives people away. Repubs if you nominate Ron Paul, you will get all your normal drone (R) voters, lots of young votes and possibly even mine. It’s your choice whether you want to win or continue to ignore the only sensible statesman on stage.

Glad to see some of the country are opening their eyes to the idea of Ron Paul! He really is as far as I can tell the only Non-Establishment candidate that would not be converted once in office.
If you want a strong dollar, balance budgets, civil liberties, Ending the Fed, Ending the military industrial complex, and true capitalism then the choice is simple! Ron Paul 2012!

Posted by: Realist | January 24, 2011, 9:02 am 9:02 am

Oh yah, Mitt Romney another plant by the democrats to pick who they think will likely be a loser like McCain. Then you got that joke Ron Paul. When you know what Herman Cain stands for like the FAIR TAX and the Constitution then you need to join us who support him. once you go to his website you’ll have a real reason to choose him for your 2012 run for the president.

We won’t get fooled again. No more corporatist stooges like McRomney. We want a champion of the Constitution, like Ron Paul.

I don’t care that Ron Paul is too old for two terms. By electing Ron Paul, we’d be making the strongest possible statement in support of the ideas he represents – a restoration of Constitutional government, pulling our troops out of these endless costly wars and cutting the Federal government down by abolishing entire departments. Electing a centrist like Romney is utterly futile; he’s the same as Obama.

Romney is an ‘almost’ demo.
The left-wing hasn’t even demonized him. He could run on either ticket in the NE.
The demos will now start to tear him
up trying to get him nominated.

I like Mitt Romney – he’s a decent, hard-working, good-looking dude. But the country needs a fundamental reassessment on the economy and foreign policy. Only Ron Paul will do that – Romney is for more of the same. Ron Paul also knows best how to preserve liberty.

Romney thinks a mortgage deduction is a great deal vs what the FairTax will do. He needs to read up.

President Obama will beat any of these nuts. I hope one of the Tea party people get to run against Obama. Second term for him for sure.

Romney is a joke, as is this Straw Poll! This is nothing more than a feeble attempt by the neocon-controlled New Hampshire G.O.P to put another puppet in the White House. The fact that Ron Paul cleaned Romney’s clock at last years CPAC (and will do so again this year) just doesn’t sit well with the neocon clowns who put this bogus “straw poll” together. No one except these puppet masters in New Hampshire wants Mitt Romney and his “magic underware”, or of his other twisted beliefs. Ron Paul may have come in second in this neocon poll, but that is quite a good showing when you realize that this poll is completely worthless. The 2011 CPAC is the only poll that matters, so don’t get too excited about Mitt Romney.
Ron Paul for President in 2012!

Romney, with R. Paul as VP, or Chris Christie and Paul. We need someone with economic sense and somone that has ran a business. That is what the executive branch does. Too bad no one told Obama. He has tried to be President of the world and be everything to everyone. He listened to no one. Our economy is in the sewer and unemployment is off the map. We need somone with a business degree. 4 more years of Obama will make us a third world country.

What a joke, this is what they say is most important to them? And they vote Romney? Ron Paul has been saying these things for decades people. Just check him out yourself. Mitt Romney is for war, he voted going in Iraq, he wants to go in Iran… That IS NOT reducing the size of fed. government, THAT IS same old same old. He’ll reduce the debt by doing what? Going into another war? I’m afraid most of the people don’t really know what trillion is.
Also, great way to stimulate the economy – more debt.. yea, you see, economy runs on high hopes and good looks, it has nothing to do with actually enabling new companies and old companies to grow without suffocating them with tax? Oh right yea, Romney will get the tax down too, by running perpetual warfare on rainbow power.
And finally, sure, we really do feel that we need to repeal healthcare, because it is simply not working, lets rather focus on people having money, and liberties to seek healthcare themselves with the money they got, and without the burden of being forced to help someone, but helping on their own because of general human nature, want to help those in need when you are prosperous. Or, Romney-care, it is very different this time you see, because he speaks very nice stories, and, did we mention he looks very good?
Reducing the size of the federal government: 49 percent
Reducing the size of federal debt/deficit 15 percent
Stimulating the economy to create jobs; 14 percent
Repealing health care: 7 percent
