GE CEO Immelt to ABC News: “People Get to Think What They Think”

News that General Electric made $14 billion in profits in 2010 but paid zero in federal taxes has led to liberal leaders like former Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisc., and MoveOn to call for President Obama to show the door to GE CEO Jeff Immelt, the chairman of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness

Immelt was even roasted on late night comedy programs like the Daily Show.

The criticism has been also been intense with labor leaders arguing that under Immelt, GE has shed jobs and expanded outsourcing.

We caught up with Immelt in Washington, DC today and I asked him about  the criticism. Watch below and we’ll have a full report on World News tonight.

TAPPER:  Since you became CEO, GE has shed jobs and a lot of jobs have gone overseas…

IMMELT: Jake it’s really not true. In other words, we’ve sold half the company since I’ve been CEO.  If you take that out, our job growth is up and if you look at our core infrastructure and technology it’s up 30% and if you look at what we’ve  done post-crisis, we’ve added 6,500 manufacturing jobs and so I just think you have to get in the second layer of the analysis.

TAPPER: What do you make of the criticism of the people who say you should step down, you’re not a good role model for the business community.

IMMELT: Look I am completely committed to doing a good job, working with the president  and I’m completely focused in that regard on building jobs and competitiveness in the US and I will do my best to do a good job with it. People get to think what they think.”

LOL!…. Hey WHERESMYMONEY, so, sofar I’ve shown you news articles from Albuequerque, New Mexico and from Ann Arbor, Michigan about the POSITIVE effects that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are having on small businesses across America.
Here’s another fantastic article from the THE TIMES OF TRENTON (New Jersey):
“Thanks to the new law, Ms. Large and other small-business owners can look forward to relief in the form of small-business tax credits. When filing taxes this April, small-business owners will be able to submit the new Form 8941 to apply for a tax credit of up to 35 percent of their health-care premiums. This will let small businesses hire more employees and provide them with health care.”
“Although Ms. Large loves the independence of running her own business, she’s at a disadvantage in the health-care marketplace. Because she purchases health insurance for only two employees, insurance providers have no incentive to give her a competitive price; not only are her rates excessive, they are unpredictable. The current setup of the health-care marketplace penalizes innovators who start their own businesses. Yet this is all be about to change. Our state Legislature has the chance to establish a new competitive health insurance marketplace, or exchange, where small businesses, the self-employed and individual consumers can pool their bargaining power and make insurers compete for their business.”

Why does Immelt care to be close to Obama?
Is it a “keep your enemies” close type relationship, or does he truly believe that Obama is good for GE and the country?
If Obama is good for GE, then why is Immelt close to Obama? Wouldn’t that be the very definition of crony capitalism?
Why ask Immelt questions about GE’s business when it is already clear, no matter which way you look at it, Immelt is a politician and not a businessman?

Why should any corporation get away with not paying ANY TAX. Even a little would make me feel better but you live and make your money here in the USA and reap the benefits. Don’t you think you should be helping the economy and the country which has helped make your fortune? Americans buy your products and you have a business here and get the money people spend from here…don’t you feel you ? No one should operate a business and pay no taxes..you get the benefits of transit, police coverage, firemen, garbage pick up, etc…so you should pay back to keep these services in tact. Whatever state you are in..has service people they need to pay ie. cops, firemen and if your place of business goes up in flames…you surely would like to see a firetruck come….so pay a little toward their salaries…everyone else does.

If you care to slog through the 1 million pages of the IRS code, you can structure your business to reduce your taxes, or in the case of GE to defer all of it.
It’s just effective tax planning. Of course, this is an excuse for Congress to make the tax code and tax regs even longer.
Which suits us lawyers and accounts just fine.

Obama is owned by the Unions and some big corporations like GE-they both gave VERY HEAVY to Obama. He knows which side his bread is buttered on!! Why do you think over a 1,000 Unions and SOME Corporations like GE DO NOT HAVE to take the Healthcare that the rest of us DON’T WON’T? Special favors come in handy!!! Maybe if Green Engery is pushed- a little more palm greasing will go down and with some benefits to the ones that go for it! Ask Al Gore, he got filthy rich! Maybe Obama wants in on that too!!

That same year, the total deficit was $1.7 Trillion.
Those Bush era tax advantages clearly worked out better for a teeny tiny percentage of wealthy people. Maybe you can explain why these folks shouldn’t be taxed a little bit more?

I think you are wrong about the unions and others not having to take the health care plan….they may have their own which is what Obama said..if you have your own and like it..keep it. That is not what you are saying….the health care plan is structured exactly as Romney’s health care and is successful in his state with 98% of the people using it now. There were some things that they needed to change and some things that were fine as Obama’s plan and he is willing to adjust things also…but many things are good, no pre existing conditions, never being thrown off, children on ins. until 26 and other things. So I think you are wrong in your assumption that some do not hve to take this plan.

In today’s NY Times, the GE CEO stated, “When you are LOSING MONEY (!)you don’t pay taxes.” I would not classify making nearly $6 billion$ as “losing” when they are profits. To the extent that our government is corrupt, bought and paid for and cares not for the welfare of our nation is very relevant to the obscene amount of money that pours into the coffers of our misgovernment. Have we had enough?

TEA, that Tax enough already surely doesn’t apply to 2/3′s of American corporations. During Clinton’s tax structure 23 million jobs were created, the economy was strong and robust, he managed to cut government spending along with increasing taxes for the top 1.5% these current tax cuts didn’t create the million jobs, so we’re still expecting different results with the same old tired story? They should be tarriffed for those off shored manufactured goods no ands or ifs about it. The American people are sick of being bs on.

The Bush tax cuts gave us an unemployment rate of 4.6%.
The business uncertainty created by Obama have given us 8.9%.
The top 10% of earners in the US pay the largest share of total income tax of any country in the world.
Face the facts, parasites: there’s nothing left for you to plunder. You’ll either work hard to improve yourselves, or your standard of living will decline. And while you’re at it, stop whining.

“The White House would forge ahead with military action in Libya even if Congress passed a resolution constraining the mission, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during a classified briefing to House members Wednesday afternoon…
“The answer surprised many in the room because Clinton plainly admitted the administration would ignore any and all attempts by Congress to shackle President Obama’s power as commander in chief to make military and wartime decisions. In doing so, he would follow a long line of Presidents who have ignored the act since its passage, deeming it an unconstitutional encroachment on executive power.”

Yeah, and 8 years of the Bush Tax cuts gave our nation a pathetic 3 million new jobs. The WORST ever since records have been kept. WORST ever, even with an inflated housing bubble.
See, the Clinton administration created 23 million new jobs, so the Bush era inherited a nice level of employment.
Unfortunately, our current President inherited not only an economic meltdown, but also a job creation engine that was broken.

Face the facts
==============
I don’t think working class American have any trouble at all facing facts, but they are not under any obligation whatsoever to accept right-wing baloney…like trying to attribute unemployment figures directly to tax rates. Also the electorate can decide if they’ve been working hard all along but Republican parasites have been plundering the middle-class in favor of the top percentiles since it’s apparent their standard of living has already been declining as a result….and they are perfectly justified in changing it if they want to no matter how much Republicans whine about it.

Posted by: Skip | March 31, 2011, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm

Here’s how to not have to pay taxes: throw money at congressmembers you want in place and throw money at congressmembers that go against what you want. Have them take tax loopholes that benefit you and/or your company and make them law. Don’t pay taxes on your profits. When challenged, use the “well, its the law (so go ahead and screw yourself)”.
I suppose that all of this is Obama’s fault as well as everything else that’s wrong with this world. Next the bozos that make up the majority of the Republican and Tea Party constituency will start blaming Obama for the weather.

LMAO!….you are exactly what is wrong with America. You “think” you understand this story but in reality you do not.
For your education there A.LINCOLN, the fact that GE was able to “legally” get away without having to pay any taxes is a result of this thing called “tax loopholes”, many which were implemented with the Bush Tax Cut Laws which the Republicans just pushed to NOT allow to expire last year.
Go read up on some of those corporate tax “loopholes” and learn how to educate yourself about some of the issues facing our country. And, the next time you read about things like GE paying “zero” taxes, or like the other story, a while back, about Warren Buffet paying less taxes than his secretary… you’ll know that you can thank the Republicans and the Bush Tax Cuts for those interesting stories.

Diane Sawyer had this as a World News Tonight scheduled to air March 30. It didn’t air. Wonder why?

Posted by: wheresmymoney | March 31, 2011, 8:31 pm 8:31 pm

A number of organizations are advocating a boycott of the products that come from companies owned by the Koch family. This is problematic for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it could potentially hurt the wrong people.
The Koch brothers own Georgia Pacific. It is an American consumer goods company that makes everyday products like facial tissue, napkins, paper towels, paper cups and the like. Their plants are great examples of American advanced manufacturing. Incidentally,
GP makes most of its products here in America. The company’s workforce is highly unionized. In fact, 80 percent of its mills are under contract with one or more labor union. It is not inaccurate to say that these are among the best-paid manufacturing jobs in America.
This presents a dilemma and a paradox. While the Koch brothers are credited with advocating an agenda and groups that are clearly hostile to labor and labor’s agenda, the brothers’ company in practice and in general has positive and productive collective bargaining relationships with its unions.
While some companies are running from investment in American jobs, The Koch brothers’ Georgia Pacific just reached agreements with its primary union in the paper industry to invest more than a half a billion dollars in capital to essentially create two state-of-the-art machines that conserve fiber and energy at two separate union mills.
By Jon Geenen
International Vice President, United Steelworkers
This is part of a blog post found on the USW Blog entitled “A Well-Intentioned Bad Idea”.
Points To Consider:
1) 80% of it’s mills are under contract with one or more unions.
2) Among the BEST PAYING manufacturing jobs in America.
3) GP makes most of it’s products here in America.
4) While some companies are running from investment in American jobs, The Koch brothers’ Georgia Pacific just reached agreements with its primary union in the paper industry to invest more than a half a billion dollars in capital to essentially create two state-of-the-art machines that conserve fiber and energy at two separate union mills.
So, while GE sends jobs overseas and balks on paying taxes, the Koch brothers are working on constructive agreements with their company workers and investing in jobs HERE in the USA. High paying jobs in the USA. Wow.

So in other words no proof the stimulus did what it was “expected” for unemployment… other than funnel productive taxpayer dollars into well connected DEMOCRAT destinations in order to filter its way back into DEMOCRAT campaign coffers.

Lets see… a Jan. 9, 2009, report that was called “The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan” from Christina Romer, who was chairwoman of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers, and Jared Bernstein, the vice president’s top economic adviser is an offhand estimate? Single commenter?
Unbelievable the crap that you oBama sycophants try to pass off as logical debate.

How much can be debated endlessly by economic statisticians, but I have never seen any compelling evidence that shows the stimulus did not put significant upward pressure on employment. We may have still lost net jobs, but unemployment would have gone much higher without it. “It helped” would only be described as a total failure in right-wing circles.

On the other hand the Republicans claimed they would focus on creating jobs…but we have yet to see any evidence of it.

DEMOCRATS would sy “it helped” my standing in my social circle to borrow $100K and party and entertain my friends with lavish gifts and trips, etc. But, now the bill comes due and I’m that much deeper in the hole. Who’s the failure?

Posted by: gk | March 31, 2011, 11:03 pm 11:03 pm

Romer’s report was loaded with disclaimers, it could only be called an rough estimate at best. For any who doubt it check PolitiFact where George Allen’s statement that “Barack Obama promised stimulus would keep unemployment below 8 percent” is rated as Barely True.

Rough estimate? Rough estimate to guide spending $1TRILLION that you don’t have? I’d call it pure science fiction.

The BIGGEST LIE was that the Republicans would create Jobs….Where are they?
None…absolutely…None. If their budget cuts go through there will be a loss of more jobs. Because of their tax cuts for Millionaires there is a Revenue problem. One they created. All of these Republican wanna Be’s haven’t realized they are Not rich enough to be a Republican. If your not a Millionaire…they don’t Care about you. The problem is you think they do. Duh…you are making them richer and you poorer.

Must be some of that “kinetic budgetary estimation activity” going on. The lefties and their agenda is one big disclaimer. Everything is based on one lie after another.

You’re trying to downplay commonly recognized uncertainty in the job market. If there were such a thing as economic certainty they would already have reliable formulas for the stock exchange.

GE was famous for a decade for Welch’s notorious motto: “Emigrate, Automate, or Evaporate”. The idea that the CEO of a copany who placed destruction of American jobs above all else (and pays no taxes to boot) should be guiding America’s employment plans is beyond ludicrous. We have, honest to god, completely lost our minds.

Don’t mix up tax evasion with tax avoidance, which is a terrific thing to do and can be rewarding providing you can unearth legitimate deductions. Although tax avoidance is perfectly legal, I must admit the chagrin I have with GE not owing anything. The tax man has not sent any body over to GE as far as I know. So if the conglomerate got approval on some big time write offs, leave the CEO alone.

Is this the Hope, or is it the Change?
“The White House would forge ahead with military action in Libya even if Congress passed a resolution constraining the mission, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during a classified briefing to House members Wednesday afternoon…
“The answer surprised many in the room because Clinton plainly admitted the administration would ignore any and all attempts by Congress to shackle President Obama’s power as commander in chief to make military and wartime decisions. In doing so, he would follow a long line of Presidents who have ignored the act since its passage, deeming it an unconstitutional encroachment on executive power.”

What is genetic is an extreme left-wing party who seem to think that they can spend extreme amounts of money that we don’t have on an extreme agenda and funnel money to an extremely large amount of their well connected supporters knowing that an extremely large amount of that money will find its way back into their campaign coffers to continue supporting their extreme agenda. The extreme left-wing CANNOT honestly propose a cut of a single dollar. Never have, never will.

LOL!….does that statement sort of go along with the “shallow thinking” of conservatives that thought we could implement “Bush Tax Cuts” while simultaneously introducing new expenses?…
–2 wars (including “nation building” another country and making $350 per month monthly payments to 120,000 “Sons of Iraq” muslims)
– MEDICARE Part D, the “unfunded” (because we simultaneously had Bush Tax Cuts) Republican contribution to MEDICARE that doesn’t even allow the federal government to negotiate drug prices.
– A whole new federal department (Department of Homeland Security).
LOL!

Amatuers compared to Pelosi, Reid, and Barako Bama. Tell me again how much they proposed to cut in their budget proposal for this fiscal year? You know, that budget thingy that tells the American taxpayer in advance how they plan to be good stewards of their hard earned money. Surely those extreme left-wing folks in charge of things left one laying around somewhere for you to quote from, especially what with the election last year and all?

Doubling down on stupid is no way to run a country but it apparently has its fans.

Now a Gallup poll concludes that “unemployment saw a slight, but insignificant, decline in March.” Unemployment decline was INSIGNIFICANT. The Obama brood needs to follow Colin Powell’s advice and “focus in like a laser on the economy”. The economy can only improve by producing our way out of it. It doesn’t happen by liberals “wishing it” or by mere, “let’s wait and see”. No we need to get PRODUCING again and the radical liberal bureaucratic red tape is what’s strangling our nation. High taxes, heavy burdens on businesses, radical environmentalist red tape is causing our demise.

FTA: “People Get to Think What They Think”
Gee, that’s mighty nice of you, both. For now, we get to think what we ‘think.’ How noble to allow us the chance to ‘think’ what we will.
But both of you are actively pursuing actions that would run right over the top of ‘what we think’ in the days ahead.
This “IS” communist economic ‘theory’ in practice. Government “subsidized” favoritism where the expense is picked up by taxpayers.

……I bet you’ll be saying “but Bush…..” for the next 75 years! What about Clinton Bush 1, Reagan, Carter, Nixon, LBJ, FDR and Woodrow Wilson. One thing you and do agree on is if we don’ty learn from history,… . Seems like we are repeating history; but with the annual deficits exceeding $1.5T, the national debt over $14T and unfunded liabilities exceeding $112T, we’re gliding toward the precipice (unless we’ve already gone over it).

@ DEANBOB, “……I bet you’ll be saying “but Bush…..” for the next 75 years!”
YOU BET!…….. George W. Bush and the Republicans had the PERFECT once in a life-time opportunity FOR 6 YEARS to do what I’ve heard Republicans preach about for my entire life, “fiscal conservatism”, “smaller government” etc. You apparently forget that we had a republican President, Senate, and House for 6 years STRAIGHT. And instead of the government getting smaller, it got bigger, and we paid for all of that growth by lots and lots of borrowing also….The national debt equaled $4 trillion when the Republicans took over the White House, Senate and House (January 1981), and $8 trillion only 6 years later (January 1987).
Sorry DEANBOB, some of us aren’t stupid enough to go back to a “crooked used-car salesman” twice, which is how I view Republicans after those 6 years.

These people pat themselves on the back for doing more with less, while they are the crux of the problem. GE brings more things to light, in their own pockets, while justifying it with their own results without looking at the blood on their hands. This man should not be on any government commission, out side of the Republican “Save the Wealthy” by stepping on the middle class commission.
