If the plant is too close to the ocean front, the plant may suffer some amount of physical damage by the tsunami. But it will still function if there is a fail safe water cooling system. In the case of crisis in Japan, the cooling system failed because the back up power supply was not fail safe in the presence of severe flooding. What a pity !

I personally don’t think that the risks of nuclear power balance the benefits. It is very expensive but is made to look affordable with federal funding. I’d much rather see us invest for the future in green technology.
No more new nuclear plants!

Ok, could his Highness now please tell us 1) about the TSA porno-scanner radiation. You remember the studies that showed levels that FAR exceeded what TSA claimed. Then it was claimed that those studies were flawed; they forgot to divide by 10 or something? And we trust these guys to run them? A dentist makes you wear a lead shield to look at 1 TOOTH (and he leaves the room)!
2) about whatever decay might, or is, coming over from the Japanese tragedy (via wind currents, seafood, manufactured goods, fruits, travelers, etc.)
3) why are you fleeing, or vacationing, in Brazil during this potential crisis?

Here’s what the review of the Gulf spill resulted in:
“The 380-page report provides an opening for Democrats to rekindle legislative efforts that failed after last year’s oil spill, the largest offshore incident in U.S. history. But they’ll face an even tougher road to passage this year, with a Republican majority in the House of Representatives set on cutting spending and reducing the government’s regulation of business. Adding to their burden, rising gasoline prices are prompting calls for more domestic energy production.”
“The Democratic-controlled House approved bills last year to boost safety standards for offshore drilling and remove the liability cap, but the measures were not taken up in the Senate. Those bills included many of the suggestions recommended by the commission.”
I imagine the nuclear review will face the same problems:
1) Regulatory Capture – most regulatory agencies serve as boosters for the industries they regulate.
2) Congressional corruption – members of congress generally represent their donors rather than their constituents.

I suppose Obama should explain what the comprehensive review of the Gulf oil spill accomplished while he is conducting his review of nuclear energy.
By the time all the reviews are in Obama and his Czars will be out of office. So does he think that history will remember him for all the reviews he ordered?
I’m sure Obama will be remembered for the financial commission he brought together. Who could deny that Obama’s commission put the federal government on a path to fiscal sustainability?
