Nerd Prom Red Carpet: Should Donald Trump ‘Clean Up His Language’ and Does Obama Really Support Gay Marriage?

ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reports:

It’s that annual night of cross-celebritology, when the Washington power brokers, Hollywood stars and reporters mix and mingle at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, or, as its known on Twitter, #nerdprom.

ABC’s Top Line anchors, Rick Klein and Amy Walter, broadcast live from the red carpet with some interesting results: a politician saying Donald Trump should “clean up his language” and a Hollywood star saying she thinks President Obama, deep down, actually supports gay marriage.

Here are some of the highlights from ABC’s red carpet broadcast:

Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., said he thinks if Donald Trump is really thinking about running for President he should “clean up his language” and talk about the debt and the deficit, real problems facing the country. Stop “dropping f bombs.”

Entourage star Jeremy Piven joked that he brought his bar mitzvah papers to in case Donald Trump wanted to see them. (A joke about Trump’s role in forcing President Obama to release his birth certificate this week.)

A somewhat sedate Donald Trump said he is excited “to meet everybody” at the dinner. He refrained from making any political comments.

ABC’s Rick Klein asked Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester on “Glee” if it bothered her that President Obama opposes gay marriage. Lynch is married to her female partner and the two came together to the dinner.

Lynch said she thinks that President Obama, like all politicians, says what he needs to say, but she thinks that deep down the President does not mind that she’s married to a woman.

The President said this year that his thoughts on gay marriage are “evolving.”

ESPN reporter and GMA special correspondent Erin Andrews told ABC Political Director Amy Walter that “politics is your sports.” Walter countered back that “CSPAN is our ESPN.”

ABC’s political correspondent, Jonathan Karl brought House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and White House deputy communications director Josh Earnest. Karl said its important in Washington for people on both sides of the political spectrum to sit down at these dinners.

Cantor talked briefly about raising the debt ceiling, the next big political debate in Washington. He said Republicans in Congress will insist on real spending cuts in exchange for extending the nation’s credit to send a message that Americans know they are spending too much money.

Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg said he’s at the dinner to see President Obama do standup.

evolving? I’d say so. Man’s Country, indeed.

I send kids to the office who receive detentions for using the F word. We have a zero=tolerance in our school. This man talks about education? He needs to go back to school…I would never vote for such a lousy role-model.

For all of Obama’s bravado, Trump has still managed to do what Obama has thus far failed to do…publish his hospital-issued birth certificate — the source document of any “official” state issued certificate of live birht document. I wonder why?
It’s because Obama doesn’t have a hospital-issued birth certificate. He wasn’t born in a hospital. This is the lie he is willing to stand up in front of a nation and look out over the millions he has fooled is fooling.
And they cheer for him.

LOL!…4.6 million MADE IN AMERICA manufacturing jobs lost during Bush…and your biggest worry is, “Where’s his birth certificate”.
…sort of “shallow”, don’t you think?

Finally, some presidental duties Obama can adequately perform: “standup comedy”.

At first I was excited to see Trump get into the fray. I thought he would bring a mature business oriented perspective to all of the immature politics and ranting and raving passing as a substitute for leadership. UNFORTUNATLY, TRUMP HAS TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE WORST…relying on immaturity more than most to get his message out.

Posted by: lifesajourney | May 1, 2011, 9:34 am 9:34 am

Of course Trump should clean up his language.
Obama probably does support gay marriage, but that is one issue that is not a negative, about Obama. Indeed it is the GOP who are bigoted, and anti-gay.

Given the exposing of Trump’s assored ‘Made in China’ products he sells for inflated prices to Americans and the publishing of his Selective Service records during his college years and the 4-F he somehow received after graduation, I’d say he has some explaining to do. Trump doesn’t need to do anything more than accuse and attack, he’s throwing himself under the bus; pathetic self serving pompous ass.

Posted by: Rob Dent | May 1, 2011, 9:59 am 9:59 am

I don’t take Trump as a serious candidate……I much prefer Allen West. Trump is not afraid to say what we all know, that this president is a disaster!!

Posted by: Kathy in Pa. | May 1, 2011, 10:06 am 10:06 am

Oh wait don’t tell me because Trump only smiled last night he is racist!!!
OBAMA is COCKY and ARROGANT WITH A SUB-PAR PERFORMANCE AS PRESIDENT. Change has come to America and it’s called mediocracy!! Now that is funny.

I watched the dinner speeches and what BO thinks is comedy made me sick. What a low class president we elected! A room of 2500 liberal left media licking their chops for this Communist and his Communist wife. Anyone notice the scholorships went to anyone but white kids? I hope Trump gets even! I’m embarrased and ashamed with what I witnessed lasts night!

Posted by: bonnie | May 1, 2011, 10:27 am 10:27 am

what a disgrace of a president. i don’t care what documents he releases. he is the worst president ever, even worse than that wart Jimmy Carter. Anybody would be better than this idiot. ANYBODY.

Posted by: jeff | May 1, 2011, 10:42 am 10:42 am

All of you who are so afraid of the president being a Marxist are the ones who scare me. I am sure you know so much about what Marxism is from the comic books that you have read about it in. Do a case study on the problems in the Arab nations, it is due to the divide in wealth in those nations, something which conservatives support in the US. Your greatest leaders right now are quitters (ex gov. of Alaska) and Casino Moguls, I guess that is something you are are proud of.

Posted by: Sam | May 1, 2011, 11:31 am 11:31 am

David: If God came down and said he was an American…you would still doubt it. There is no satisfying people who will look for anything negative to say. If he cured Cancer you would say he stole the idea from someone. I think you need to look into your own self and wonder why you cannot accept this. Ask those people in the auto industry if he is really an American born. They really don’t care as he saved their jobs and the industry and yet not one press person or t.v. host even mentions the fact that many people are working today because he took a very unpopular step and save jobs for Americans. They have some security, food on the table and money for their kids education because of this step he took with little or no support. General Motors is now gearing up to be the No. One car manufacturer in the U.S. Not bad for someone you think is a foreigner. He saved AMERICAN jobs …not shipped them overseas like some did.

@Bonnie, come on now, that was funny. It seems as though Trump can’t stand being made fun of. It seems as though Bonnie that you thought that all the scholarships should have gone to white kids only from the statement you made about this subject.@ Joe, I guess you were sleeping those 8 years of bush and cheney and their arrogance huh??? please lets not go down this road of sub-par performances of presidents because you will lose this argument.

Posted by: Tina | May 1, 2011, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm

I wish Birthers would just come out and say how they really feel, which is actually that they don’t like Obama because his name is of a different nationality, because
he does not fit the bill for what they believe a US president should be and in some cases many of them do not want to expose their bigotry so they pretend the real issue is whether the birth certificate Obama he has presented is enough proof.
Oh and I really love how they still claim Obama is muslim, as if that also implies that the law prevents him from being president. What a joke.

Posted by: Sam | May 1, 2011, 12:13 pm 12:13 pm

Why is it that the left is so facinated with this issue, you’re the ones that keep it alive ,why, so you can tell everyone how smart you are???? Chris Matthews loves the Birth certificate issue he spends most of his time on it, more then any other so-called news outlets.

Posted by: usgerman43 | May 1, 2011, 12:28 pm 12:28 pm

Not so we can show people how smart we are but instead, so we can show that the other side is not so “smart”

Posted by: Sam | May 1, 2011, 12:34 pm 12:34 pm

Judge them by their actions and words. If a man says he is against something, then he is against it until he states otherwise. If a man says he will produce change but does not, then he is a liar or not fit for the task.

It just boggles my mind how easy people turn on each other. This president was handed a mess when he became president and we expected him to preform a miracle. there isnt anyone who could of. As Americans we all need to stand behind our President if we like him or not. we are so fast to believe in the negative of a person than what is true.

Economic growth, Financial system reform, health care reform, maybe its just not the kind of change you want to see Nathan but some do consider that change.

Posted by: Sam | May 1, 2011, 1:16 pm 1:16 pm

davidfarrar, you do realize that hospital’s don’t issue birth certificates? The State Health Department does that through the local Registrar’s Office. No hospital is authorized to issue birth certificates. The Hospital certificate you’re talking about is simply a keep sake for the parents. It has NO legal significance at all.

Posted by: Cindy K. Bird | May 1, 2011, 1:24 pm 1:24 pm

Trump asked real questions the corrupt biased government owned press refused to do and he was successful forcing obama to comply. Now it’s on to find obamas poor grades and college papers as we learn what made the worst US president in generations (much to Jimmy Carter’s relief). The only good thing to come of his failed administration is all those who voted for him in 2008 who will lose their jobs and homes as a result!

Posted by: Shepard145 | May 1, 2011, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

Donald Trump said he came to the dinner because he was “invited by a lot of people”. Were those people his FRIENDS? I am sooooo happy Donald was there to hear the “truth” about how the American people view him. In a nutshell, he is a pompous, vulgar, lying, dishonest, shady entertainer with a horrendous comb-over. He got exactly what he deserved. But, hey – a true narcissist would just believe Obama and Meyers were talking about someone else.

Posted by: Bolo | May 1, 2011, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm

As a guy, the only thing that bothers me about lesbians is that they tend to associate with and sympathize with gay men. It’s a selfish thing with me, not a principle. I am straight and don’t like being come on to by men, and demonstrating principled ambivalence to them routinely attracts them to me, as if I am “unsure” about my preferences. Very irritating. To each his own. Just don’t bug me.

Posted by: Bill | May 1, 2011, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm

What is truly appalling is the number of people commenting who clearly have no idea what a “communist” or “Marxist” actually is. How unsurprising it is for conservatives to echo the inapplicable insults their Fox News Heroes lineup so casually toss around because all they can do is revert to name calling and whining.
Those in the far right can tout their great savior Donald Trump all they want, but Obama was a class act last night. The most amusing thing is that Trump continues has the gall to even show his face in political affairs. I say more power to him. Watching him trip over his huge ego as he cluelessly tries to win over the country promises to be hilarious.

oBAMA—THE WORST PRESIDENT …..EVER!

Posted by: jan | May 1, 2011, 8:35 pm 8:35 pm

Hate him all you want but our current President has more class in his little finger than the Donald could ever even imagine under that thing he has on his head. The whole business about Obama’s birth certificate is really a desperate attempt by those who never could stand the idea of him in the White House. What he does or doesn’t do have nothing to do with such hatred. What other president has been asked to produce proof of his citizenship? The answer is zero and that speaks volumes about the crowd who can’t get beyond this bogus matter. All one need do is contrast the manner in which Trump and the president handle criticism to judge who is fit to lead. Accepting criticism indicates a mature personality who understands we all have faults and can improve by considering criticisms as a means for accurately seeing ourselves. Trump has not even reached the rather low level of adolescence when a person understands neither he nor anyone else is never wrong and is willing to admit his mistakes. It’s time to ignore the infantile whining, crying bullies who always must have their own way.

Pleeease. I watched the dinner and, of course, the scholarships to Howard went to African Americans. Duh! The other scholarships did not all go to students of color. This is the sort of tunnel vision that fails to inform all of you who hold so much hatred in your hearts and minds for anyone different.

Trump has not announced he’s running for anything the president of the most powerful country in the world along with many of the most influential/powerful journalists and politicians of the most powerful country in the world spent an entire evening talking about Donald Trump.
They prepared a video poking fun of Trump. The president read a collection of jokes about Trump. A comedian did a routine about Trump.
All this in response to a person who, after all, is just another billionaire mouthing off.
Trump is controlling the discussion. I wonder if Obama and his staff of frat boys has realized that yet.

Posted by: MizFW | May 1, 2011, 10:16 pm 10:16 pm

MIZFW When you use a plural subject as you did in your post, also use a plural verb with it. “if Obama and his staff” (meaning they). You should not use “has” with a plural subject: they have. Thank you and have a nice day.

It’s amazing how many people continue to blame Obama for the current US situation when it’s really the conspiracy of the rich/bankers that brought this country to its knees. Reality bites!

Donald Trump should explain why he out sourced American jobs to China but he complains about china.

Yeah Trump, keep believing those polls. I can already see your head expanding. I hope the Repubs are dumb enough to select you to run against President Obama. Obama is the first President in long while that I consider as an intelligent and highly capable LEADER. I’ll be voting for him again in 2012.
