Obama Polling on Day One of Last Campaign

As the President prepares for a conference call with 500,000 supporters following an email launch of his re-election bid, our polling guru Gary Langer has a roundup of Obama’s latest polling:

The president runs about evenly vs. "the Republican candidate" (generic) in most recent tests, e.g. 50-47 percent in an AP poll last week. Against named potential GOP candidates he's been even or a little ahead, depending on the candidate and the poll. Good source: http://pollingreport.com/wh12gen.htm

But in gauging Mr. Obama's prospects there's another metric at least as important as the horse race polls: The unemployment rate. As the economy goes, so, most likely, goes this president.
