ABC News’ Emily Friedman (@EmilyABC) reports: A burned bag of microwave popcorn — and the subsequent fire alarm — cut presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s first trip to the Hawkeye state a bit short this morning.

Romney was in the middle of answering questions from audience members at the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Presidential Forum Speaker Series when the fire alarm began to ring, and the former governor was rushed off stage and outside.

“I wasn’t trying to get out of the tough questions,” joked Romney, as he continued to field questions from bystanders.

As he signed autographs, announcements over the loudspeakers alerted the audience that the fire department was en route.

“I don’t mind, I’ll take this out on the street,” said Romney, chuckling.

No word yet on who the guilty popper is.
