Rep. Anthony Weiner Gets Combative With Reporters About Lewd Twitter Photo
ABC News' John R. Parkinson (@jrpabcdc) reports:
Rep. Anthony Weiner’s response to the flap around a lewd photo posted from his Twitter account went from dismissive and joking over the weekend to frustrated and combative Tuesday in Washington, when the Congressman became agitated with reporters and called a TV producer a “jackass.”
Weiner, D-N.Y., repeatedly refused to answer questions from reporters on Capitol Hill, calling focus on the photo, which was sent from his Twitter account to a 21-year-old college student who followed him on the social networking site, a distraction.
Weiner tweeted over the weekend that his account had been “hacked” and that led to the photo of a man’s lower half in boxer briefs being transmitted to the student.
But today the Congressman and his staff would not say any more or deny that the man shown in the photo was Weiner or explain why he was following a 21-year-old college student from Washington state on the site.
And while he said he was hacked, the congressman has not asked the United States Capitol Police to conduct an investigation into the posting of the photo and whether it was his groin depicted in the photo posted on his Twitter page, @RepWeiner.
In addition to no longer taking questions about the matter, Weiner has hired a lawyer to represent him.
Gennette Cordova, the woman who received the photo from his Twitter account, meanwhile, told her story via Twitter too.
When Weiner, who is known for his temper, spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill today, things turned heated when he wanted to talk solely about an impending vote on raising the nation’s debt limit and would not answer their questions about the lewd photo.
“This was a prank that I’ve now been talking about for a couple of days. I’m not going to allow it to decide what I talk about for the next week or the next two weeks, and so I’m not going to be giving any more about that today, I think I’ve been pretty responsive to you in the past,” Weiner told a scrum of reporters outside his Capitol Hill office Tuesday evening. “If I were giving a speech to 45,000 people and someone in the back threw a pie or yelled an insult, I would not spend the next two hours of my speech responding to that pie or that insult. I would return the things that I want to talk about to the audience that I want to talk to, and that is what I intend to do this week.”
Reporters continued to press Weiner on why he is not asking for a formal investigation, and he was adamant that “I am not going to permit myself to be distracted by this issue any longer.”
“I’ve been doing that for several days. Now I choose – now I choose – there are people who haven’t read the statements, I assume you have. Look all I can tell you is this: This is akin to someone deciding on Day 3 or Day 4 that they want to continue talking about something that I consider a distraction, and me making a decision on how I’m going to deal with this. And the decision that I’ve made is I’m not going to permit it to distract me. I’m not going to permit it to continue on for three, four five, six more days,” Weiner said. “If that’s unsatisfactory to you, I apologize, but I think that what people really want to talk about are things like the debt limit vote tonight, are things like the oppressive disparity between the very well to do in this country and the people who don’t have as much, or the fact that it’s more and more difficult to be in the middle class in this country. That’s why I’m here to work on.”
Weiner added a tidbit that he “passed Michele Bachmann today the number of twitter followers. I will give you that fact.”
Asked whether that was a result of the viral news reporting on the lewd photo, Weiner said “Unfortunately it probably is,” but he refused once again to address whether he posted the photo himself.
“This is now Day 3. You have statements that my office has put out. There are statements that my office put out and there are going to be people who are going to want – look – this is the tactic. The guy in the back of the room who is throwing the pie or yelling out the insult wants this to be the conversation,” he said. “The objective of the person who is doing the mischief is to try to distract me from what I’m doing. So for the last couple of days that has happened. I’ve made a decision. I’m not going to let it happen today. I’m not going to let it happen tomorrow. You’re doing your job, I understand it. Just go ahead and do it, but you’re going to have to do it without me answer questions about this.”
“I’m going to have to ask that we follow some rules here. One of them is going to be you ask questions and I’ll do the answers, that seem reasonable? That be reasonable, you do the questions, I do the answers, and this jack-ass interrupts me?” Weiner said of CNN’s Capitol Hill producer Ted Barrett. “How about that as the rule of the game? Let me just give the answer.”
Weiner emphasized that he prefers to “talk about the debt limit vote,” which is happening later this evening.
“Let me make a point about the debt limit. We are tonight at 6:30, 6:45, going to be casting a vote on something that has monumental importance to our economy, whether or not we have a stunt vote on something as important on the debt limit. I want to focus what I talk about on that,” Weiner said. “I want to focus what I’m working on, on that. I want to focus on that because frankly I think my constituents want me to, and frankly that’s what the country would want me to. So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m not going to allow this thing to dominate what I talk about any further.”
Asked why he retained a lawyer and what he was directing his legal team to do, Weiner was evasive, telling reporters that “they’re going to advise us on appropriate next steps.”
“There are people that are going to want to distract from what I have to do, there are. There are going to be people that want to have this debate. And to some degree the people who want to engage it are zealous to do it. Why? I choose to fight for the things that I care about, and the things that I’m working on. I know this is how the game is played, some people decide they want to talk about this thing for days and days. I choose not to. That’s my prerogative. Sorry. Sorry.”

Dear Congressman Weiner,
Until today I admired your spunky nature, holding your own on the floor of the House in the face of nay sayers and those with feet of clay. But as of this afternoon, after seeing your tap dancing performance on CNN I have lost all respect for you.
When what was called for was a simple “Yes” or “No” you repeatedly refused to respond other than with a bunch of gobbledy gook about someone throwing a pie from the back of the room and other inane foolishness. If it was your intention to hold broadcast time for an interminable length then you’re in the pantheon of face time achievers. On the other hand you forgot the adage, “When you’re in a hole, stop digging.” Congressman, if that hole isn’t already too deep to climb out of then I suggest you do so immediately.
The press, and worse, the public thinks you’re lying or at the least sidestepping the truth for some unfathomable reason other than you’re guilty and fear the inevitable public flogging.
So did you send the email? Did you follow that young woman on line? Have you learned nothing from Bill Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Edwards, DSK of the IMF, John Ensign, and so many others who have stared into the camera, doe eyed, denying involvement. Sadly, in your case you don’t even have the guts/balls to say anything. Perhaps you think that by saying nothing you won’t be held to task for not telling the truth.
And you and so many self-righteous politicians (oh, and don’t forget Tami and Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggert, and the other religious hypocrites) who hugged their scriptures, tearfully fessing up after they ran out of places to hide.
Congressman, stand-up. Answer the questions. After Fred Astaire died they broke the mold for tap-dancers. And Congressman, you’re no Fred Astaire.
One final thought. Perhaps you’re noticed that I live in California, a traditionally Democratic state. Politicians from all over the country routinely come here to raise campaign funds as they build relationships and a base of support. Do you think that appallingly shameful appearance on CNN today will help you in the short or long run? Do you really think you’ve helped your possible run for Mayor of New York City? I don’t.
You should be ashamed of yourself. Your constituents, your colleagues, your party, and this country deserve better and sadly, you don’t appear to be up to the requisite standards.

Let and let live and don’t make a federal case out of people’s personal stuff that doesn’t directly effect you. Does the fact that you sent a picture of yourself in a bathing sit to a friend effect how you do your job as a factory worker? I didn’t think so. Does it effect the way your mother and nurture your child? Didn’t think so again.

Yeah, why is he following a 21 year old college student? He just got married a year ago…tsk tsk. He’s busted and he knows it. He probably meant to send a DM (Direct Message) and accidentally put it on his Twitter status box. Busted.

He wants to focus on something else, sure he would like it all to be swept under the rug. He has been so nasty to others, but when the attention is pointed at him he doesn’t like it.

He’s toast! This disgusting picture is 100 times more offensive than the shirtless congressman flexing for the camera. It is Wiener in the picture and HE posted it. He will never be Mayor of New York, he’ll soon be forced from Congress. He’s stonewalling because he knows he’s guilty.

Its nice to see the media going after a progressive liberal for once. Whew! I thought real reporting was dead. Now find out the rest of the story instead of just giving us soundbites. Are you reporters so scared of the left that you are letting them get away with everything? I hope not. We count on you to be in the middle, reporting on both sides of issues. Please tell us the truth!

LOL. Well, I’m one of those semi-liberal independents who supports the Dems for the most part. But, looks like Weiner has pulled the same stupid stunt that has gotten some Repubs in trouble recently. What’s fair is fair. Yep, I agree…he’s toast, and should be if he did send that tweet. These guys just never learn.

Weiner loves to attack others.. But now, for the guy to have “allegedly” sent a perverted picture of himself, just hours after his appearance on Maddow, to a twenty-one year old community college student and 40,000 plus followers(oops)! The subsequent cover-up, blaming a “hacker”, his inability to answer any questions regarding this issue are amazing.
The mouth that once roared… Is silent.

WHAT!??? this much upset and anger because Rep. Anthony Weiner called a TV Producer a “jackass.”
When we have a woman that has called OUR President a muslin, un-American, non citizen, racist, terrorist, communist and claimed he don’t care about OUR Troops or the American people! How and the hell can it be an OUT CRY of ANGER and drastic political consequences toward Rep. Weiner, when this woman has shown the WORST type of DISRESPECT and HATE toward the President of the United States. Showing MORE disrespect than the Dixie Chicks and their careers were destroyed, but she is running to the bank?!!!! Something IS really WRONG with the people in this Country!!

First of all, Andrew Breitbart is behind this and we all know how he loves to use media to wrongly smear people. Secondly, I happened to see what happened on Twitter “live” Friday evening. I remember it well because Rep. Weiner complained about missing the hockey game because of his TIVO. Then in the next Tweet mentioned that his FB was hacked, but that the toaster was loyal. There was no lewd photo link posted on his Twitter account that I saw. And I was sitting there reading the tweets. I believe it was a hoax designed to smear Rep. Weiner.

So, how do we find out if he sent the thing? Most posters on this forum already believe he’s guilty, and it doesn’t matter if he answers questions from reporters or not. I’m a progressive, and I thought he was smarter than this, but usually, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Is Weiner himself the “hacker” he talks about breaking into his Twitter account? Why would he follow a random college student in Washington state on Twitter? What’s the relationship? Man… doesn’t look good.

Weiner is starting to act very very curious. SOrry Janice Jones but, we cant have this double standard forever. He has stated that he was hacked. Did he lie? If not, there should be an investigation as this is a serious matter. He doesnt want to ask for criminal investigation? Why. Because if he does knowing that he will be exposed, that in itself is a crime, filing a false report. But he wont repeat that he didnt send it either, because there may yet be an investigation without his say so, and he would be deemed a liar. Hes in a pickle. Its pretty simple. If you idnt send it, if its not you, if your account was hacked, say so, and prosecute the perpetrators. Conservatives want ANY fraudsters, hackers, etc prosecuted, no matter who they represent. Weiner might wish this is going to go away but Im not sure it will. Callin a CNN rep a Jack ass wont help the matter.

The truth is easy to remember and cannot be forgotten. A simple yes or no will suffice Mr. Weiner.
Did you send the text? If he did not he would emphatically deny it. So he sends and lewd text and then LIES about it…it applicable to legislative issues….no…but his character…specifically his honesty IS…do the American people deserve to have LIARS creating laws and spending our treasure…NO We do not!

Okay. People, get over yourselves. HOW DARE HE FOLLOW A 21 YR OLD. It’s easy to follow someone, for all you know he didn’t even mean to. let the man say what he has to say. He is not saying anything, because unfortunatly for him, there are people out here like you guys that are obsessed with the 24 hr news cycle, and presume someone guilty until proven innocent. Get over yourselves. If this was you, you would say the same things, why? Because you no one likes to be accused of things they did not do. For the record, he already said it wasn’t him. It matters because it shows a monumental lack of judgement. Does anyone want someone who can’t think running their country? Yes, he’s got plenty of company with other fools in Congress, but more is NOT merrier for our poor nation.
WORST of all, he’s lying. Bad enough to do it – and his erection doesn’t look like much to share, really – more like a BLACKMAIL pic, lol – but lying about it is the crux.

You folks in the media have a big job to do to cover this up maybe you can blame Palin or Bush.

Unless politicians lie about their personal lives while under oath, why should we care what they do? Not a one of us is free from having lied about something, and the same goes for politicians on both sides of the isle. Find, investigate, and report some real news that affects our lives!

I have had my emails hacked so I know it is very very possible BUT WHY is he not letting officials check this out and WHY is he hiring a lawyer? Something smells….:–)
Posted by: Barb | June 1, 2011, 9:14 am 9:14 am
AND if this was a hoax he should let officials look into it. Like I said, it’s very very likely account was tampered with BUT when you don’t let officials look into it….If someone is trying to smear him he should definitely let it be looked into.

@MARY ABC is not investigating because there is no story here and they would lose face along with their story. If it was a Republican it would be a naked pic and it would include their face lol.

Why does he beat around the bush.
Just answer yes or no
OH BUT WAIT A MINUTE, he is after all a political hack and they have a hard time addressing any subject…

weiner is nothing but a lying phoney. i was sickened to read a liberal post that he was a rising star. what a nut! this guy is a creep. he looks so much like squidward i expect to see spongebob knock on his door. our government has enough goof offs. this one can be gotten rid of now on moral grounds even if his constituents are too stupid to do so for the sake of the nation.

The republican who choose to resign, was afraid of his wife. He did not have to resign, he choose to do so.

weiner is an ugly little putz with a rude tongue, now caught in his own web of lies. if he was a man, he’d resign. but he’s actually a little weasel in a business suit, narcissistic and entitled. he believes the rules don’t apply to him. can’t wait to watch him twist and wither…

A congressional ethics query may be launched into the scandal in regards to the Anthony Weiner Twitter photo. A Congressional inquiry has already been demanded by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The image was confirmed by Weiner to be of him. He will need personal loans to pay for the mess. Being a public figure is also a big responsibility. You must be a role model for all the citizens under your government. It is not because you are in a higher position but because these people respect and believe in you.

This guy is such a scumbag—one of the clear-cut reasons why this country is the laughing-stock of the world. With the morons in charge, Calcutta, India’s economy will be the envy of the U.S. in the not-too-distant future.
BTW—when these turds in DC get caught with their pants bunched around their ankles, why is it then that they want to discuss the topic of doing what’s right and best for the country? Any other day, they could care less. Geez—anything to distract the public about what low-life inbreds they really are. Someone should break the news to them that that tactic simply isn’t working.

Who cares? That’s the problem with our society is that they forget these people are human not immortal! Should they be held to a higher standard? Yes, of course, but let’s not forget that they are not infallible.

This is not a big deal. Weiner is guilty only of poor judgment, and most of us are at one time or another. He should not be hounded out of office!

Can we get away from the Democrat vs Republican issue, because really, who gives a flying fig what Weenie’s party affiliation is? Ladies, gentleman, if your mate did such a thing would that be part of the discussion? I think not.
Let’s bottom line this…..everybody knows darned well that anything you send into cyberspace is almost guaranteed not destined to remain a secret, therefore weenie’s actions were imbecilic from the get go, thereby raising the topic that if he’s that arrogant/stupid/careless I question his ability/honesty (and truly not a question at this point) to do the job he’s paid for.
Why on earth would any reasonable & intelligent man in the public eye with a duty to the public deliberately put himself in a position such as this? This question pretty much answers itself and lends itself to only 2 possible answers…..he’s either a complete moron or reasons with his nether parts. I cannot abide a liar, and I particularly despise a bad liar……don’t pee on my leg & tell me it’s raining.
This little wimp screwed over his wife of what, a year (yeah, so much for the “honeymoon stage”) & publicly humiliated her, and I’m supposed to believe that he’s an upstanding guy who’s honest in the workplace? If someone is so deceitful & uncaring of his family, the faceless masses (us) mean less than nothing to him.
And let’s not the blame the press….if he wasn’t dirty & unbelievably stupid he wouldn’t be in this position. I could be investigated from birth & nothing dirty could be written about me.
I am also sick unto death over the comments (from the public & from the weenie boy) that this is a “private family matter”…..oh really? Well, once weenie boy hit the “Send” button he gave up his right to privacy & it’s just oh so laughable that he didn’t once think about his wife all the thousands of times that he did. Too bad, so sad weenie-boy, you didn’t give a thought to your wife, so why should the rest of us?
Gary Hart was caught with another woman & it ended his bid for president, and rightly so. Since then, others have been caught with their pants down & the majority of the time nothing happens. Why? Because the American public has become desensitized to outrageous behavior, and that makes us idiots, and rightly so. The American public is a doormat because they allow it and permit the topic to degenerate into a party vs party discussion.
I know it isn’t raining, but if you guys want to get out the umbrellas, go ahead & delude yourselves.

Also, this needs to be said: Where are the posters who said the weinie boy was “set up/the victim of a hoax/hacked” etc & so on ad nauseum?
Are you all busy wiping the egg off your faces? Just wondering…..
