Senate Shoots Down Controversial Ryan Budget & President Obama’s Plan, Too
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe (@JaffeMatt) reports:
Senate Democrats today put their Republican counterparts on the record on Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal as the upper chamber of Congress voted down the controversial plan that would overhaul Medicare.
In a procedural vote this evening, five GOP senators opposed the Ryan budget: Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Susan Collins of Maine, Olympia Snowe of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Every Democrat opposed the measure. The final vote tally was 40-57, sending the House-passed Ryan plan down to defeat. The three senators not voting were Republicans Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Pat Roberts of Kansas, along with Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York.
Democrats believe the political fallout from Ryan’s budget helped them win last night’s special election in NY-26 and they have repeatedly said they want to make it a central issue in next year’s elections.
“The Republican plan to kill Medicare is a plan to make the rich richer and the sick sicker,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor.
“That was an easy vote for all of us,” noted Sen. Patty Murray, D-WA, at a press conference after the vote.
But in an attempt to turn the tables on Democrats, Republicans then forced a procedural vote on President Obama’s budget submission from February. That measure failed by a vote of 0-97, with all the Democrats voting against it because they believe it is now outdated.
Ultimately, on a race-to-race basis it is unclear how much of an impact today’s Senate vote on the Ryan budget will have in 2012. Snowe and Brown decided to oppose the Ryan budget, while Indiana’s Dick Lugar – who supported it – will face a serious challenge in the Indiana GOP primary. Plus the GOP has one distinct advantage heading into next year’s elections – they only have to defend 10 Senate seats compared to 23 for Democrats. And now they can say the Ryan budget got 40 more votes in the Senate than the President’s did.

They need first to get rid of the anti-Robin Hood, along with Boehner, and all the “Save the Wealthy” agenda, and start looking at real answers, figured out with real math, and not the Republican math.

Voice of Reason,
I hate to brake it to you but she run as independent. Remember the republicans nominated a Tea party guy who was literally measuring the curtain before the election? Alaskans fired him.
Medicare will endure. It is heartless to take 6000 dollars from over 22 seniors to give it to one rich millionaire! It is immoral.

DEANBOB,
Your advice would have come in handy in Nov 2010 when your folks were lying about healthcare. The same healthcare that extended Medicare by more than 8 years without cutting essential benefits but actually expanding it! Remember how the republicans lied about it?

Media isn’t even reporting the Obama plan being voted down. Nice try republicans! Media IS reporting on the Ryan scam being voted down. Good job Democrats! Republicans are on the record now. No place to hide. Is the Ryan scam destined to be the republicans “waterloo”??!

DeanBob So if the Ryan plan is so so gooood, why doesn’t the party of capitalism (concentration of wealth) not free enterprise advocate implementing it immediately on everyone who has participated in Medicare?

An “unfunded liability” is a benefit the federal government has promised to pay that is not matched by TAXES to fund it. These “unfunded liabilities” increase the national debt unless they are paid for. Like with increased taxes.
Newt Gingrich helped develop the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan that President Bush signed into law in 2003. Medicare trustees now say that this REPUBLICAN developed and REPUBLICAN sponsored plan added $7.2 trillion in “unfunded liabilities” to the national debt over the next 75 years.
Why would any Republican support increasing the national deficit?
Louisiana Republican Bill Tauzin helped promote the Bush era prescription drug plan. Months after it was pushed through the House, Tauzin accepted a $2 million-a-year job as President of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. And millions of AARP voters voted GW Bush back into office.

maybe Ryan should look at the 35%interest rate that we are paying to China for our debt! That is simply outrageous and lowering that level of interest on our debt would be the biggest priority in decreasing our “top four” biggest parts of our yearly fiscal budget(medicare, social security, military, and government machine)

First hand look at how they railroad and played mind games with the President passed healthcare reform!
Now just because it’s Ryan’s plan (that of course he was going to use in 2012 for political gain) the Senior’s don’t understand… how dare they tell those senior’s the truth about this plan.. what worked for the scare mind tactics created by the GOP/Teas REALLY does work even if it is the truth and their usual lies.

Now here come the bullies and scare tactic of the GOP/Teas from the anger of their wishes and demands not met… LMAO!!!

Those rabid excuses from Maine, Massachusetts, and Alaska are nothing more than shameful politicians. They are not team players and add to the disgusting state of Washington DC politics.
But, what would one expect from Godless New England and Alaska. They have little or no moral undergirding. It’s all about themselves. But, they’re in Washington because like-kind residents of their respective states voted for them……or was it Acorn that assured their election??
Remember their names: Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Susan Collins of Maine, Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Rand Paul of Kentucky is another issue.

LADIES & GENTLEMEN HERE IS WHAT THE RYAN PLAN DOES;
The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) demonstrates that the Medicare portion of the Ryan plan shifts rising costs to beneficiaries. “Ballooning health care costs continue to be the main source of the rise in future deficits,” said Dean Baker, an author of the brief. “The Ryan plan does nothing to address the projected explosion in health care costs. Instead it just shifts the burden of these costs more squarely on the shoulders of seniors.” In fact the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) Report of the Ryan Plan Specifies a Spending Path That Would Nearly End Most of
Government Other Than Social Security, Health Care, and Defense by 2050. That means no EPA, EEOC, FDA, Veterans Administration, Department of Education, National Science Foundation, etc. The Plan also Contains Deeper Cuts to Medicare and Medicaid than Ryan Revealed. In addition the Paul Ryan deficit-elimination plan assumes that unemployment will drop to 2.8% by the year 2028.As Paul Krugman points out, the only time we’ve been at this level was briefly, during the Korean War. Even during the crazy .com,unemployment barely broke below 4%. On TAXES, Rep. Ryan’s budget simply doesn’t describe exactly how his tax plan would work, it conveniently skips over important details however, the broad outlines of his tax plan are to:
(a) Maintain the Bush-era tax cuts beyond their expiration in 2012 and cut the top individual tax rate down to 25 percent from 35 percent.
(b) Consolidate the current six tax brackets into some, unspecified, fewer number of brackets
(c) Keep overall tax revenue levels the same
(d) Pay for the enormous tax cut for the top by eliminating or curtailing some, unspecified, tax expenditures
Without the missing details this is nothing but pure political boilerplate which is probably on purpose since any detailed description of his ideas for tax “reform” would reveal a massive tax hike for the middle class. For Rep. Ryan to cut the top rate by nearly one-third and still keep tax revenue the same as it would have been under President’s Bush tax-cut regime means he’s going to have to raise taxes somewhere else. The Rich get their Taxes dropped to 25% (item “a”) but in order to keep the “tax revenue levels the same” (item “c”), that Rich mans tax cut has to be made up by someone. And that someone is you! Republicans are defined by their willingness to believe whatever they want about the world. They are like children, playing in a make-believe world. To call
Republicans members of a political party is a misunderstanding of the situation. Republicanism is a medically verified personality disorder. In short–Republicans don’t need votes, they need medication. And if you vote for these charlatans, YOU DO TOO!
REPUBLICANS ~ Preaching doctrines they know to be untrue to people they believe to be idiots.

“The Republican plan to kill Medicare is a plan to make the rich richer and the sick sicker,”
Apparently the democrats plan is no one get richer and everyone get sicker, one of those “everyone must suffer together” mentality liberals love to use when it comes to something that doesn’t work but they want to keep it. How are the rich getting richer and the sicker getting sicker with his plan? If you are over 55 you are fine, you get to use the same old broken system, but if you are under 55 you have to actually PLAN for the future and SAVE, I forgot, liberals are the party of don’t worry about taking care of yourself big brother will do that for you.

Medicare does need help, but the Ryan voucher plan is not only a joke, (IN FACT IT IS NO JOKING MATTER FOR THOSE WHO WOULD BE EFFECTED), but it is criminal to take away from the people who need it most, to insure healthy retirement for people who have billions of dollars, from the same people, it would be stolen from. They say Ryan’s brave, but I don’t see him standing up to the real problems in this economy.

So is Senator Ryan going to make any changes to the bill to get it passed or just be stubborn and pig-headed and still try to push the same bil through? Is he going to keep beating the same dead horse with the stick? It’s clear that the Tea Party does not want to compromise, that’s the problem.

You know what this current crowd of GOP liars want is to turn the United Sates into China, where only a few giant corporations run things, they own the factories, that apartments, the grocery stores, the gas stations, the newspaper and magazine publications, the radio stations, the television stations and you pay them and they get all the benefits, and if you do not like it go jump off cliff. Well some Chinese workers seeing that as individuals that they cannot progress have done just that by committing suicide. The current crowd of GOP liars want to abolish Medicare from the elderly, they want to abolish a woman’s right to choose and have control over her own body, they want to abolish collective bargaining rights, and on top of it all they want to blame the middle class and public sector workers for a recession that they created, while their beloved “Fat cats” continue to pay themselves exorbitant salaries, bonuses, fringe benefits. Yes this is the GOP “Radical Right-Wing Social Engineering” that they dream about. New York was the beginning but the next will be Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and later the other states of our nation. To save face and since their strategy failed the GOP will be doubling down, but the retirees will be coming for them, he, he too bad.
