What Made Boehner Cry at Catholic University?
ABC News’ Arlette Saenz reports:
Speaker John Boehner delivered the commencement address at Catholic University this morning, shedding a few tears while telling the graduates they should embody three virtues.
"Humility, patience and faith, and always a few tears from me," Boehner said.
Boehner teared up during a story about the morning of his leadership election in 2006, when he went to 7 a.m. mass and prayed for the Virgin Mary's guidance. When he thought he received no sign, he got a call from his former high school football coach, Gerry Faust, who went on to coach at Notre Dame.
"It was old Coach Faust," Boehner said choking up, "calling to wish me luck, and telling me you can do it. You know I've never gotten a call from the Blessed Mother before and I don't think I ever will, but I got to tell you it was pretty darn close."
Boehner also cried when the president of Catholic University conferred an honorary degree upon him.
Catholic University’s decision to invite Boehner to deliver the commencement address sparked criticism from prominent Catholic thinkers, who believe as a Catholic, Boehner has failed to help the poor during his time in office.
Boehner did not address the criticism in today’s speech, but said he lives his life to serve others.
“One of the students asked me, 'Well, what prayer do you say before you go to a meeting at the White House with the president?'” Boehner said. "Well, I always ask God for the courage and wisdom to do His will and not mine. Serving others — that's not just how I lead in Congress, it's how I lead my life.”

Virginia Ultrasound Bill Hits Nerve
As a high school football player, John Boehner suffered tramatic brain and spinal chord injuries, bad enough to force the US Navy to release him from Vietnam War service on a medical discharge after only 8-days in uniform. John understands that each day is a blessing and one more chance to do the right thing, given the fragility of human life, even if that now includes a permanent disability to control his tears. Let’s stop making fun of John Boehner – and understand the true importance of surviving traumatic brain injury. After all, Congressman Boehner is 3rd in line to command the United States of America to the President. The NFL Players Association better sign John Boehner up as their traumatic brain injury spokesperson when all is said and done in Washington, DC.

I’m an atheist and I’m a better Christian than Boehner is. The Republican party has shown itself to be totally callous about the poor. They seem always afraid that they will be expected to pony up some of their vast wealth to help the unfortunate. Of course, they don’t call them unfortunate, they call them free-loaders, welfare moms, lazy, anything to exonerate the fact that they don’t care about them at all.

I believe the “others” Boehner refers to whom he serves are the wealthy and influential campaign donors who make sure he is elected over and over again.

I’ve been trying to tell people for awhile now that Boehner likely suffers from a condition and that either it or it’s treatment causes outbursts of tears.
Quackers Web, I wasn’t aware of what Boehners condition might be, only that a condition seemed logical. Thank you for making it clearer.

This is really no surprise. The GOP always caters to the wealthy. As a Catholic I know that boehner does not understand what being a real Catholic is all about.

I’ve noticed he only seems to cry if it’s a story about him. As far as it being a condition? Think about it. He’d at times be just as touched about things that had nothing to do with him. I know, I’m the sappy female that seems to want to cry over Hallmark commercials at Christmas. So far I have never seen him cry over anybody else. I don’t hate on this guy, but I think he’s full of himself.

Boehner can implement a no federal tax strategy and then complain that the deficiet is growing. Fire all public union employees and say that unemployment is increasing. Great Christian agenda. What a load of cr*p. Boehner uses his faith and weeps like a baby for only one purpose–to make himself look human. He has no heart. All he cares about is the wealth of his rich pals, and to h*ll with the middle class and the poor. He is a disgusting liar. The Virgin Mary wouldn’t have anything to do with such a loser at life. He has a big surprise coming when he reaches the Pearly Gates. It will be a finger pointing downwards, where he will roast on the devil’s barbecue for all eternity.

The only time Boehner teared up when he made this speech when it had to do with how moved he was to get some people paying attention to HIM. I don’t see him tearing up when he hears how hard it is for people to get health care, for children who are denied education, for the unemployed being cut off from unemployment benefits. He’s very moved by oil companies making $35billion in PROFITS in the first quarter who just feel it’s “unamerican” for them to give up a tiny percentage of this in subsidies. He’d rather see people out on the streets with no homes, no food and no access to doctors than to see his wealthy compatriots give up their super-rich lifestyles. Outrageous!

And what is with his tanning year round, what is he covering up?
I find it scary that he interprets a call from an old coach as a possible message from the Virgin Mary. Honestly, wouldn’t a lot of old friends call you near and on election day if you are running for office? To interpret that as a sign from the divine is rather illogical.

In case anyone was wondering, the Bible says that all the believers who died before and after Christ, (that includes His Blessed Mother), are spiritually asleep and are not awake at the moment. So therefore they cannot, nor do they have any power to hear anyone nor help anyone alive right now. Only God’s Holy Spirit (active force) is helping people out and only God should get the credit. (1 Corinthians 15, 1 Thessalonians 5). Just my two cents.

I find it ironic that he wants to serve others. This ‘others’ so far inluded only the wealthy and those who can afford lobbists. I have yet to see him serving the truly needy and downtroden. When he does that, then I would think he is a true Christian.

Most of you above sound like my liberal niece who sponges off me, her mother and thinks the government should take care of the poor. Please define “poor”. Since the 60′s when welfare came about, the category of “poor” has enlarged. In the 90′s when slick willy changed all the regulations and made housing available for the “poor”, look what happened. Please don’t put the blame on Boehner (a compassionate and emotional person and I hope he runs in 2012), but rather the “Poor”. The more you help them the more they expect!!!

Tan man better look again at the things that make him cry..and playing the Christian role just doesn’t fit his style! He wants the same as the Bush administration did..make the rich richer, and the poor can all dye off as far as this man cares. I am sure he doesn’t read any comments because he would really be crying up a storm thinking that people can really see thru him..
Posted by: Linda Pelletier | May 14, 2011, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm
Maybe Boehner cries because he knows how much of a coward he is by not lifting a finger to serve the less fortunate. He alleges to be ‘serving’ the people when all the people do is serve him. Notice how many of the comments trash this hypocrite. You’d think based on that alone that there were plenty of votes to reject his Republican friend Bush in Ohio in 2004. Oops, wait a minute, the computerized voting machines were owned by a Republican corporation. Paper ballots, please.

May the Lord take away ALL of his blessings off your life so that you are not “sponging” off of him, hypocrite!!!
And BTW, moron, the growth of the poor is a direct result of the growing disparity between the rich and the middle-class. Most people just want a good-paying career, but the rich want it all for themselves!

Well Thomas perhaps they will. But keep in mind if the Government took everyones earnings then it would not be enough. And the post that said our tax rates are the lowest since 58. Lets say they are but I don’t think 45% of us are living in poverty yet 45% pay no taxes at all.
Harp on the rich all you want, it was after all the rich power brokers on wall street who gave money in droves to elect Obama and they are the ones who played a big role in what happened to our economy.
I suspect that Boehner got the message that the money the congress cares for is not their money to do willy nilly with it. Being a good steward of the peoples money and leaving the people with as much in their pockets as possible should be the goal of every politician. Tending to the poor should be just as much our responsibility as it is the Governments.

But you forget republicans were in a huge minority. Senate democrats gave us national Romneycare. Senate democrats killed medicare for all and killed a public option as well.
I am not a fan of Boehner but all I read here is name calling and generic republican bashing.
Your all so concerned about the poor, what has ANY political party done to help the poor?
Should we try to get them all jobs or just give them social security?
Should welfare be a permanent source of income or temporary (like unemployment)?
Do republicans want everyone to be poor?NO!
Do democrats want to keep everyone on welfare? NO!
But they both have a political interest in keeping everyone right where the are.

I’ll repeat what I said before. I wonder if the GOP is wondering if they have the wrong person for the job. And I am starting to believe (or wonder) if maybe that alcohol isn’t a “huge part” of his problem. You all know he “smokes”. That has always made me wonder how people can really handle things; because they rely on addictive substances to “help” them. Yeah…I know the President smoked…but as far as we all know he was “strong enough” to quit the bad habit. I personally do not think that Boehner can handle the pressure anymore. Especially the “far right extremes” he is having to deal with in his own ranks. However; that is exactly what the Party gets for spawning them in the first place.

Nothing like a good cry, or so they say. What’s interesting about the Speaker is that I never see those tears for the least among us that are largely anonymous. For my part, even though I have conservative personal values that govern my lifestyle and financial choices, I well understand the difference between arriving at human life via a white vagina portal and a non-white one, at least in this country. Hard work is commendable, as John says, but hardened hearts are not so good for your health or the nation’s. The richer among us can part with a little more of their wealth without missing it to enable the least among us to be able to afford to buy fresh produce and gas and to put a roof over their head. Turn off the faucet, John, or go into the ghettos of America with your faith and look deeply into the eyes of the poor, non-white children there and maybe you’ll have a transforming moment when the floodgates really open wide like they did for Paul of Tarsis… it’ll do you and the nation good too, when that happens. You’re a good man, who cares, but you’re growing up lessons as a white male in poverty can never be the same ones that non-white males in poverty grew up with because you did not experience racism. You needn’t atone for that, but you do need to understand it from the perspective of those non-whites who lived it when you were growing up and whose children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are living it now.

Thank you for letting me know Mr. Boehner’s ability to be faithful to the Lord by always seeking his guidance, practicing his faith sacramentally, and having a thick skin from those people who cannot and will not ascribe to the virtues of faith, hope, and charity. May God Bless America and our leaders abundantly, as well as those people who cannot be civil.

“Helping the poor” is code for taking other people’s money and their ability to provide for their own and give it to someone else that a third party deems more deserving. It is disgraceful that most who vote to “help the poor” don’t have enough to give of their own, so they “help” by voting to take from others. This would be known as theft if it were not done by the government.
What hurts the poor the most is overspending and monetizing the debt to create inflation. This is the most regressive form of taxation of all, hurting the poorest among us.

Lots of folks throwing stones here….
how much do you stone throwers personally do to help ‘the poor’? Are you throwing from your comfy home or place in academia?
How many of you are in the trenches of service?

To the person who thinks “Republicans” are callous toward the poor: Study the data on who makes what in this country and who gives more of what they make. I’m certain that you will be enlightened (if facts matter to you). As far as the “poor”: Look critically at what FDR’s policies and JBJ’s policies have done for our poor. It’s institutionalized slavery. Gov’t cannot be all things to all people at all times. You eventually run out of other people’s money. Teach a man to fish…God had it right (as usual)!

All of those who are crying for the poor. What about the least defenseless of all? Those who never have a chance at life–the unborn! All of you who say he is not a Christian. What about taking another life? When have you good Christians spoken with such outrage over the killing of defenseless and inocent babies in the womb? By the way, I am sure that Boehner comes from a more blue collar upbringing than many of you criticizing him for being a “rich republican”! None of you self-righteous people know what is in a persons heart, so you have no right to judge this man. Stop being so hypocritical!
Posted by: Mercy | May 15, 2011, 1:40 pm 1:40 pm
I do not care if he cries –some men do. It does not mean he is right about what he believes, nor does it make him wrong. What makes him wrong is to be a complete puppet of the weathy pushing their adgenda, and claiming to be Christian. Christians do not deny their fellow man food, or healthcare, education or shelter. He cries and votes for legislation that hurts children — if it is a battle of tears, poor sick and hungry wins every time.

You people who keep pounding on the Republicans are for the rich nonsense, do realize that the richest members of congress are mostly Democrats? Do you also realize that the most number of rich in congress are also mostly Democrats?
Of course you don’t.

Mercy I hear nothing but judgement off the right regarding those less well off. Every one of you tries to say it is always some personal choice or they are lazy. Which is not remotely true. You can champion for the unborn all you like, but if you continue to turn your backs on those that are born it’s telling. Caring about your fellow man doesn’t stop once they are born.

I am neither for nor against Boehner, but willing to praise him when he does right and try to influence him when he does wrong. However, the venomous personal attacks and lack of Christian spirit in many of the above posts make me cringe. Wow. They’re brutal. Look at yourselves first folks, regardless of the possible shortcomings of John Boehner.

“All of you posters” who feel we are not being “civil” in our criticism of this man need to 1) research the topics and issues more 2) leave your “religion” at the Church door when you leave and keep it OUT of poltics and 3) look at yourselves in the mirror and determine if you yourself are being hypocrital when it comes to your “solutions” concerning the plight of the deteriorating middle class – many of them who have are now entering the category of poor.

I was a democrat for 28 yrs and finally realized we can’t continue to give handouts to everyone. The Bible says to take care of the widows and children. Our welfare system was meant to be a safety net, not a way of life for generations. We can either tighten our belts now to save social security and medicaid or take care of everybody until the system goes broke…….then no one will be taken care of. I really think Boehner is just trying to take care of things now for our children’s sake.

I am so tired of the misinformation on John Boehner’s tears. John Boehner is an ALCOHOLIC and this is WHAT they do.

“courage and the wisdom”….Johnny, you fell off the WAGON…you once belonged to AA. These words are part of the Serenity Prayer! Go back to AA. Stop Drinking. Your guilt, shame and lies will Finally STOP…..and you would have no reason to cry those drunken tears.

Someone tell the lamestream media that Boehner isn’t running for president. The “crying” stories were old months ago. Now they’re simple pathetic. Let’s worry about the economic health of the country. Ooops, we wouldn’t want to focus on the failed economic policies of the Obama administration, would we?

News Flash! They’re the Obama tax cuts. Let’s make Obama responsible for something already, can we please?

“S”…LOL…LOL They (the stories) don’t get old as long as he “keeps doing it”. LOL…Most rational and logical people are going to “wonder” why? And don’t you think that the “right” out to come up with a different soundbite than “lamestream media”. Now that…is really “getting old”. LOL…LOL

@cnd fox
Its not an issue of civility.
I do very much research issues but I form my own opinion and my opinion NEVER falls squarely on one side.
The post was about him shedding tears at a university. There is no issue to research. So what, he cried. Now lets call him names.
Both parties have their puppets and your obviously a democratic one.

Go for it House Speaker Rep. John Boehner, show those who poke fun at you what true humility is all about. Show those who “think” they are enlightened thinkers and so full of wisdom, show them what a “genuine” American politician does to make our country TRULY free and great. And last, but not least, show them the faith in God that gives life to your works.

Who are these “prominent Catholic thinkers” that this blog refers to as opposing Boehner’s presence at CU? Would these be the same “Catholic thinkers” that defended Obama’s presence at Notre Dame a few years back?

You people on here are a sad sad case. All you have time to do is be critical. The country is in the worse shape it has been in 60 years. This can be tied directly to President Obama and Nancy Pelosi. Remember “judge not lest ye be judged” making disparaging remarks about his faith is a greater reflection on you and your heart than his. It is sad to see so many hate filled comments.

The latest liberal excuse for hating a conservative. This is so easy to see through and so easy to laugh at the liberals. I swear, I so wish I could be there when they all die and experience the truth. They’ll have no more lies to hide behind.
Nothing about authentic Christianity says that you need to reward those who demand a hand out. Where does it say in the Bible that the government needs to come to the rescue of all the cumulative problems in people’s lives that come about precisely because they have REJECTED God’s laws. Then they get themselves in a mess and then it’s okay to turn to the Catholic speaker of the house for help.
When God says “do not kill” — listen to him an don’t abort children.
When God says through the Church “don’t use artificial birth control anf respect sexuality” listen to Him and watch the problems go away.
What hipocrocy that he liberals make it a point of constantly rejecting God, screwing up their lives as a result, and then criticizing the Christian for not bailing them out!!!
Posted by: Ryan | May 15, 2011, 11:56 pm 11:56 pm
The Democrats have no right to criticize Boehner and other Republicans, until they do the right thing and end abortion. I guess the Democrats forgot “Thou Shall Not Kill”

Boehner prayed to Mary for intercession: I guess with his bad treatment of the non-wealthy he was afraid to pray to the Big Guy one-on-one.
Posted by: The_Mick | May 16, 2011, 7:24 am 7:24 am
Leave the guy alone. All pelosi wanted was a big plane, better pay raises for themselves and the power to take money out of our pensions, and not give us Seniors a 2% raise. I’m a senior citizen and Obummer took my raise away and Boehner is trying to get it back for us.

The Truth (it is spelled THE not THR) if you are really about what your posting handle says…then you will know that his “crying” is a recurring pattern…and people who have inquiring, rational and logical minds would like to know why a person of his level of “responsibility” does that. You can’t “blow this one off” with a partisan “diss”.
Posted by: CND FOX | May 16, 2011, 8:18 am 8:18 am
i am amazed at these comments. I think Senators Kerry, Boxer, Feinstein, and many other Democrats are extremely wealthy. O’ look at Speaker Pelosi who is a silent owner in resturants and doesn’t employ “union” people. The unions take money from us poor working stiff and push for wealthy Democrats. How about Kennedy?? Reality is wealth is in both parties. The Democrats play like they are “poor”.
People need to work instead of receiving hand outs off our backs. There are generations receiving welfare and are having babies to maintain welfare status. SOOOOOO please wake up, we are going Broke and can not support the pensions of those in government and labor!

This guy gets me sick. I’m okay with emotions, but to go into the church preaching things like humility, and faith is like spitting on religion, as he tries to rip the purses from the elderly, and poor, while standing up for some of the greediest people in this country. That is what makes people turn their backs on the church.
Posted by: parma hts gary | May 16, 2011, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm
I kind of agree with you Zoe Zimmerman: He does not shed a tear when he attempts to take away medicare and medicade from the elderly and needy. Where is his compassion here? And when he says teachers, cops and firemen must give up more and yet finds money to give to corporations…no tears here either. If we are bankrupt and have no money …that means we have no money for teachers, firemen and corporations…no money means no money for anyone. Let’s see you cry over this.
Posted by: Talmag | May 16, 2011, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm
This guy is not a leader and I can’t tell you how many times I have tried to excuse him. He is the weakest link in the Republican party and must be taken out of the chain (of Command)What does it take to replace a Speaker and whatever it is get it done. This Nation is sick and we need a remedy NOW!He is the first illness to go by all standards of fair play. He is not up to the job and is destroying the Republican party
Posted by: bargal | May 16, 2011, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm
He says he is a Christian, I believe him. He cries because he is feeling convicted (GUILTY) for all of the sins he and the rest of the republican party are tryin to provoke against the American people. He can’t handle his own sin and he knows he is a hypocrite he wants to be better but it is very difficult for him.

“Grammix”…LOl…You may be right about the “guilt and sin” part….because that is the “VERY” reason why i will not “vote”for anyone who “wears their Christianity” on their sleeve. It tells me that because of their SUBJECTIVE “beliefs”…that they will not be “rational, analytical, logical and most of REALISTIC”. lol…lol

Aw give the guy a break! He’s just one of those emotional guys who probably cried when ET died, old Yeller got shot, and when Mufasa got trampled by wildebeasts. Doesn’t mean I agree with his politics. I’m just saying he’s an old softy.

I have nothing good to say about Boehner. He has been a tool for the greed of the rich. He crys only about himself but like all republicans he would attack, attack and keep attacking anyone in the Obama administration who cried about something important. After years of republicans giving to the rich, even most Catholics are fed up with the republicans plans that will all be harming the least among us. Many priests, nuns and others sent a letter to Boehner about how unacceptable republicans plans are for the needy.
Posted by: Vicki | May 17, 2011, 10:43 pm 10:43 pm
The fact that Democrats in office are wealthy is no more important than the fact that all republicans in Congress are wealthy. What is important is who they care about and who do they work for? Who do they consider when they decide important issues? Are they honest? Do they ever speak the truth? Democrats gave in to republicans demands for tax cuts so that they could get an extension of unemployment benefits approved and end DADT. The right wing republicans are not concerned about everyone. They have no compassion, no empathy and have gone to the dark side. They just voted to continue the tax subsidies for billionaire profiting oil corporations. That tells me all I need to know about republicans’ priorities and who they serve.
Posted by: Vicki | May 17, 2011, 11:28 pm 11:28 pm
he is not fit to be a leader. The GOP mocked that democratic V.P candidate who broke down over the press revealing his wife had mental illness. So why is it OK for this guy to break down all the time? I don’t want him as commander in chief.agree GOP has abandoned middle class, their old consistency for the super rich.unforgivably Dem constituency is minority’s gays, illegal immigrants communist and socialist. All the middle class is to them is someone to pay for all the welfare they want to give to the non taxpayer, for their vote.

Until the Democratic Party denounces it’s stand on ABORTION and the murder of over 60,000,000 innocent unborn children, it has no basis in morality. It and liberals in general have zero credibility to cast any judgement on the republicans or any other political party.
ABORTION is a true manisfestation of evil in this world.
