Can Rep. Anthony Weiner Survive? It’s ‘Iffy’ Carville Says

Whether or not Rep. Anthony Weiner’s political career can survive this scandal depends on what else – if anything – comes out.

“If the facts keep coming out more and more, and people start freaking out, he talked on the congressional phone or something like that, it’s going to be, it’s going to be iffy,” James Carville told me. “And one of the reasons is he is a talented guy, but he’s not a particularly popular guy in the caucus.”

No Democrats have publicly supported the embattled Congressman and Leader Pelosi called for an ethics investigation.

“They are really mad at him. You can just see former speaker Pelosi is furious,” Carville said.

Republicans see some hypocrisy here and say Democrats should force Weiner to resign. It didn’t take long for former Rep. Chris Lee to leave Congress after a shirtless photo of him emerged.

“[Republicans] are mighty selective,” Carville, an ABC News contributor, said. “They — Vitter didn’t push to resign, Jon Ensign didn’t push to resign.”

“But the Democrats have certainly called for an ethics investigation which is their right to do. I – of course there is always a little hypocrisy going on in these things. I think the public is just livid at this and it just seems so distractive,” he said.

Pelosi calls for ethics investigation. What a joke. NY has a bunch of lieing tax cheats representing them. They need to clean house. We all need to clean house and vote out egotistical, lieing,
union corrupt, tax cheats out of our government. Remember “we the people”.

Anthony Weiner should resign immediately. If he does not resign, he should be thrown out of office. If he is not thrown out of office, the voters should hand him a humiliating defeat if he is stupid enough to run again. This guy repeatedly lied. How can he ever be trusted or believed?
Obama’s CHANGE has taken away our HOPE!!!
We must continue to VOTE THEM OUT!!!

Where was the media when Chris Lee (R) of New York was caught doing the shirtless photo thing? They never had headlines of “Can Chris Lee Survive?”, they all called for his head. Hypocrisy at it’s finest.

George: It is frightening that we allow MORALES to be lost at a time when we are loosing the next generations existence. The politicians should be held to the highest standard, and Mr Weiner and all others in a position of governing or deciding over/for others should remove themselves from their duties. He wanted to Cheat plain and simple and if given the chance it would have happened!!!!

This sense of entitlement would not be available to/for an African American politician,Admitting wrong would mean no option but to resign. In no way racial but this is a true sign of the times. We need to have a serious conversation about morales and race.

David Vitter. the conservative Republican senator from Louisiana, survived a prostitution scandal AND got re-elected last Fall. Personally, I think that’s worse than what Weiner did. Weiner is (or was) very popular among his constituents. I think he’ll survive.

Someone wrote, “Where was the media when Chris Lee (R) of New York was caught doing the shirtless photo thing? They never had headlines of “Can Chris Lee Survive?”, they all called for his head. Hypocrisy at it’s finest.”
Not exactly. Lee resigned on his own less than 3 HOURS after the scandal broke. The media had no chance to do anything other than report the ‘scandal’ and then immediately report that he already resigned over it. Which, interestingly enough, was what led to the special election in the 26th District of New York a couple weeks ago that went Democratic because of the Republican Budget Plan by Paul Ryan that destroys Medicare. So Lee’s actions on Craigslist led directly to the Democrats gaining a seat in the House……….

Let’s get some balance here. Lee was soliciting sex. Wiener was engaged in Internet titillation. Stupid, but not immoral. The lies are his problem, not the photos — that and his vanity (and THAT’S like Lee).

Posted by: Follitics | June 7, 2011, 11:06 am 11:06 am

What a liar….he should resign. He should have spent more time working for the people than tweeting and sexting. Loud mouth and a habitual liar.

Not so fast. Weiner more or less said he directed the infamous underwear picture to a woman who never gave any indication that she wanted that kind of communication — didn’t he? If that’s the case, his conduct (at least in that instance) looks a lot less benign.

Just a thought: What kind of woman fools around with a married politician? Blackmail? Notoriety? Attention? Love? Sex? What a sad circumstance for all!

Hello America, I know all of you wonder what will Fezzy say today, now that Congressman Weiner has admitted that it was all a Lie? that there was no hacker, that it was indeed he that sent the twitters. I want to simply point out rather than to focus on Weiner, I would rather focus on the DHCCC Chair who ranted and raved about Reiners innocence, and how Nancy Pelosi and NOW clamied it was all a prank quickly to be forgotten, and the MOVEON.org that claims that Weiner will not be MOVING ON. my whole point here is to show any of the moderate Democrats of America, just how Phony the Progressive Liberals of the Party they support are. so when Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton (honory head of NOW) speak of champion Womans rights and defending Womans rights especially young college girls, from abusive powerful Congressman such as Weiner, you can see clearly where they really stand. sincerely Fezzy Bear

Huh? look, cheating is pretty rotten no matter who does it or how it is done. What this guy did is something a kid would do, a spoiled rotten kid. Who New Yorkers decide to represent them is fine with me but this guy just seems a bit weird for a 46 year old man.

Chris Lee resigned of his own accord. He wasn’t forced out of anything. Why don’t you get your facts straight. He resigned day one. There wasn’t even time for anyone to pressure him to do anything or make headlines that said anything other than he resigned….get real and pay attention to something other than the other partisan hacks!!!!

Posted by: dk | June 8, 2011, 2:45 am 2:45 am

When is someone going to ask how many man-hours were wasted on Weiner’s hacking claim? If none, why not? Is’nt the hacking of a congressman’s email or Twitter a potential national security issue? And if yes, Rep. Weiner needs to write a check for wasting taxpayer money.

No class arrogant as—– should resign but being a liberal dem he won.t The teacher in charge Bill schooled him.

What Mr. Weiner did was wrong and hurtful to his party. He hurt himself and his wife. However, his constituants like him and do not want him to leave and they are the ones who should have a say not any of us. While doing a stupid thing, agree…he has been a fierce fighter for his area and they like him and forgive him and if they still want him…they should get to keep him. They should be the ones to choose not me or you. He was wrong as Clinton was wrong but now Clinton is the most respected person for all he has done since his administration and for all he did during his administration. If Weiner seeks help and apologizes to his constituants…he should be allowed to stay. Ensin was never asked to go by reps. and his was just as bad and it involved pay offs to his lover’s husband to keep quiet. Reps could live with him…and Sanford who lied to his constituants and said he was hiking while being in another country with his lover..the love of his life he says. They did not demand his resignation and Palladino and Vitter and many others who have committed indescretions. Look at Rick Scott of Florida..he cheated the medicare program of millions and was convicted and left the hospital to pay the fine of 6.1,million dollars. It is only a sin when democrats do bad things but for republicans it is only called a ‘MISTAKE.”

I don’t care what Mr. Weiner does in his hobby time. I do have my attention to what he does at work as that could have an effect on my life leisure time. I worry about Congress doing something really stupid to the entailments promised and owed too me from long ago. I work hard and at the nearing end of my career to be told “ thank you for playing”. This is because they are not going to sell the national parks to oil companies, spend the gold reserve, sell off the energy reserves, stop wasting billions on the physical wars upon foreign peoples land now and the future. All of this and the news media really wants to frenzy talk about a wiener!?

I think Weiner can survive if the Democrats have the courage to support him? Now, I don’t agree with what he did, but what he did was a private matter and between consenting adults. Remember that those who looked at these pictures had to accept them. I also think that its strange that this all of a sudden comes out when a democrat just won a close election in New York!
I also think what Andrew Breibart did was just as bad and I think its time that the media including bloggers has some responsibility in their actions and reporting of news. I also think what Andrew Breibart said about the photo he had was a form of a bribe or blackmail and he should be punish for it just like the guy who blackmailed David Letterman!!

This jerk should just leave. He already made the decision about changing his life when he tweeted. He may have not realized it at the moment but now it’s time to s or get off the pot!

Yes he can survive its new york folks also the media will cover for him he is a liberal.

Weiner has already been judged by the court of public opinion. I believe he should stay if his constituents want him to stay and so far, they do.
I’m very disappointed that THIS story has taken up more air time than those who’ve lost their homes to the natural disasters that were covered last week.
GMA and all the other “news” stations has turned into Entertainment Tonight.
Please get off the “Weiner Wagon” and start talking about what is really important. We have people who voted Republicans into office promising nothing but “jobs, jobs, jobs,” and done nothing but dismantle a new, fledgling health care system. We have an economy on the brink again, and we’re talking about TWITTER? Global Warming is destroying our planet and we want to villify a representative in Congress?
Our education system is producing UNEDUCATED kids and we obsess about TWITTER?
Our families our FAT (high blood pressure, diabetes, depresion) and we plunk our fat fannies on the couch and worry about TWITTER/WEINER?
Come one folks, give it a rest. Aren’t there more important things to do?

Typical politician. Checking himself into rehab. His only “problem” is that he got caught.
Lame.

From what I’ve read aboiut Tony Weiner’s pictures, he sent them out to 17 year old females. Doesn’t that make him a pedophile? It seems that aspect of his hijinx has been forgotten. It seems like he belongs on a sexual predator list somewhere, not Congress.

Even though I despise what he did, I still pity him and hope the people would give him the benefit of the doubt.
