With the clock ticking toward default and House Republicans mired in ongoing negotiations over legislation that has little chance of becoming law, the president said today that he is in a high stakes game of poker.
As the president worked the crowd at an event to announce new fuel efficiency standards today, a gentleman from Obama’s home town of Chicago told the president he owed him a poker game.
“I’ve got some high stakes poker going on right now!” Obama responded, in reference to the drama unfolding on Capitol Hill.
The White House believes the bill put forth by Speaker Boehner is dead-on-arrival and that it will not pass in the Senate or reach the president’s desk. This morning, Obama made an eleventh hour plea to lawmakers to compromise and raise the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt ceiling before the August 3nd deadline to default.
