ABC News' Mary Bruce (@marykbruce) reports:
With the debt talks at an impasse, today the president will hold his second news conference this week on the ongoing negotiations to reduce the deficit.
At the 11 a.m. (EDT) press conference, the president will likely continue to make his case for the largest deal possible and reiterate that a short-term solution is off the table.
At Thursday’s “cordial” meeting, the fifth White House meeting in as many days, the president gave Congressional leaders until early Saturday morning to come up with an agreement on a deal to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling.
Also today, the president will make a phone call to the crews of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the International Space Station from the Oval Office.
Later, he will meet with Ruby Bridges, who in 1960 became the first African-American girl to attend an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Bridges entering the school escorted by federal marshals is depicted in the Norman Rockwell painting “The Problems We all Live With,” which was recently placed on display outside of the Oval Office.
