Where the Tweets Have Too Many Names: Thousands of Followers Un-Follow @BarackObama

As they say on the twitter — #Fail?

The non-stop tweets from the president’s re-election campaign that we wrote about earlier today – urging supporters to tweet GOP lawmaker Twitter accounts, urging them to #compromise cost @BarackObama at least 36,000 followers, notes the tech blog Mashable.

In addition, National Journal notes that the president appears to have helped GOP representatives gain thousands of followers.

"Thanks @BarackObama for pushing @RoyBlunt over 11,000 followers today!" tweeted Amber Marchand, Republican Sen. Roy Blunt’s communications director.

UPDATE (Monday): Obviously for someone with more than 9 million twitter followers, 36,000 is not a huge number, and the president re-gained them within a few days. The point Mashable was making, I believe, is that the tweet-your-Republican-lawmaker campaign had at least one ill effect, if a temporary one.
