ABC News’ Sarah Parnass reports:
Representatives on both sides of the aisle have criticized the bipartisan debt ceiling deal announced Sunday night, but none so colorfully as Representative Emanuel Cleaver.
Taking issue with the bill’s cuts to social programs, Cleaver, D-Mo., called the bill a “Satan sandwich.”
“This is a Satan sandwich. There’s no question about it,” Cleaver said, “because there’s nothing inside this sandwich that the major religions of the world will say deals with protection for the poor, the widows, the children. It’s not in here.”
Though Tea Party representatives have said the bill does not go far enough, Cleaver indicated that it represented a much greater surrender by Democrats than Republicans.
