What did FEMA actually do? It's the local governments who head up the evacuations and run the shelters. The power companies send out crews to fix the grid irrespective of FEMA. The police, firefighters and paramedics do their jobs without any FEMA guidance. NOAA would track the storm and issue advisories even if FEMA was asleep. Why should we be grateful?
What did FEMA actually do?
It’s the local governments who head up the evacuations and run the shelters.

Byron Wolf and what is the point of this comment? Of course people are grateful for the preparation for Hurricane Irene. It was so much better than Katrina. There was sufficient notice through coordiantion of federal, state and local governments. It wasn't perfect, because there was the loss of life and property, but, it wasn't because the first responders were not prepared or that residents of affected areas weren't given notice. The problem is our current Congress is so busy slashing important programs that future emegency protection could be jepordized. I am personally grateful for the dedication of America's first responders and pleased to see the various agencies working together.
