Mayor Michael Bloomberg: ‘We Have to Get Behind the President’
The majority of Americans say that the president doesn’t deserve another term – but for Mayor Mike Bloomberg that doesn’t matter.
“For better or worse no matter what your political persuasion is, the president is our president. We have to get behind the president,” he told me on “GMA.”
“He is the one that leads congress, he is the one that sets the policies, he is the one that represents the country around the world and he needs our support.”
I’ve spoken to political pros who say 2012 is the year an Independent could run and win the White House. Bloomberg – who already said he wouldn’t enter the race – doesn’t agree.
“No, the deck is stacked for one of the two major Party candidates will be elected,” he said. “And there can always be a third party candidate. But in the end if you take a look at what happened in the last election, and when people talk about third party candidates and say ‘Well they don’t have a chance so I got to go and pick the lesser of two evils of the major parties.’”
That’s not what he was saying in 2008 when he wrote in a New York Times op-ed that he believes “an independent can win the presidency.”
And heading into this election an overwhelming number of Americans – 84% – say they are angry or dissatisfied with Washington, per a New York Times/ CBS News poll. Everyone is looking to blame someone else, Bloomberg said, and he has no sympathy for it.
“In downturns everybody is angry. And we’re in a society today where we have to blame somebody, but the blame is all of us…Elect somebody else if you don’t like the government,” he said.
“We spend, George, all our time looking back. We want to blame people for the mortgage problems rather than figure out how to fix it. We want to blame people for undocumented here rather than figuring out what’s an intelligent immigration policy,” he said.

Such egotistism! What a blatant elitist statement.
Here is how it works, Bloomberg. Americans will support the President when they approve of what he is doing. If they don’t like it, then they have not only the right, but the duty to oppose it.

Will someone PLEASE buy this man a civics text book? No, Bloomberg, the POTUS does NOT lead Congress. To ‘lead’ implies one is ‘over’ another. The Legislative Branch is equal to the Executive Branch.

MAL2CATS You are so right. Thing is that only 1/3 or less of the american people know how their own Goverment works. The uneducated masses play right into the hands of the republicans because they dont know any better. That is why republicans are attacking education at every front. If they can keep people stupid thye wont learn the truth. Personally It seems like america needs another lesson. Let the republicans take all thress branches of government again and when the economy collapses again after the wars they will get us in and deregulation and repeal the minimum wage act. When people are dirt poor and living in a card board box on 3 dollars an hour and the markets fail well mabye people that didnt learn from 2008 will learn after it happends again.

Mr. Bloomberg is a right winged Republican disguised as a Liberal who is an ### ######, yes I agree with that. However he laughs and scoffs at the fact the Government is not working for the people.. he says vote for someone else in Congress if you do not like it? What has happened to keeping our politicians accountable for the promises they make during elections..
Our President is doing the best under the circumstances of being constantly bullied by the GOP.
As for, George Stephanopoulos -I usually like your reports, but felt this was very biased.. and quite obviously your opinion-give the American people a fare look at these guys..they are all thieves and liars! No justice for the people anymore..

The only reason to get behind this president is to push him out the door before his “fundamental changes” destroy our country. Et tu Bloomberg?
Posted by: ray | August 10, 2011, 10:35 am 10:35 am
If a Republican, Bloomberg is neither conservative nor moderate. A liberal Republican is a Democrat. As an independent, he is neither conservative nor moderate. He is a liberal independent. A liberal independent is a Democrat. But Bloomberg’s recommendation, as captured in the headline, is very accurate. Obama’s party is certainly behind him and its getting further behind all the time. In some circles, we call that a retreat.

“I’ve spoken to political pros who say 2012 is the year an Independent could run and win the White House.”
George is simply WANTING an independent to take votes away from the Republican candidate so his messiah can win again.

Personally, I think he’s right. This whole mess is being caused by the powers that be who want to make sure OBama fails, at any cost. Elect a woman and you’ll see the same stone walling.

This guy really needs help. Obama may be president and those clowns that put him in office should really be proud of themselves. However, Obama clearly does not represent the interest of the people of the United States. He and Hilliary are doing their best to destroy the US. This nut needs to be sent to the unemployment line so he will know what it feels like to be an American.
Posted by: RocketJL | August 10, 2011, 11:11 am 11:11 am
Ask this guy if he supports ‘UN Agenda 21′ (Google it) like Bush and Obama do. It means the end of private gun and personal property ownership. Every person moved into population centers and vast areas of the US where Americans will not be allowed to set foot on. No, I do not support Obama, nor Hillary, especially in their current move in the UN to control all the guns in the world.

CATMAN
Why is it that any program that helps the working man is branded socialism by
the Republicans. They did the same thing with labor laws, social security, medicare etc..
By your standards Christ was a socialist because he helped the poor.
Republicans don’t even know what socialism is, its just another one of their idiotic throwdowns like ” big government”.

Bloomberg is right, but he didn’t go far enough. The Republicans are only people not supporting the President. They are actively working against the President of the united States and the welfare of the nation as a whole for their own political gains. They openly express their desire to see President Obama fail, and have taken legislative measures to ensure it. Now they think we should reward this behavior my electing more Republicans. They should be tried for treason.

The majority of Americans say that the president doesn’t deserve another term.
THIS IS NOT TRUE! The latest PEW Research Poll: 59% said he DOES,32% said he DOESN’T and 9% said don’t know. Even if you all the 9% to the 32% that’s ONLY 41%; STILL NOT THE MAJORITY.
George, Start DOING YOUR OWN RESEARCH and stop LYING to your views. You are entitled to your opinion, but NOT YOUR OWN FACTS.

teferreti…christ helped the poor, and god helps those that help themselves. i help the poor through involvement on boards and my hard earned cash donations outside of federal and state taxation. when the government gets involved the definition of poor expands beyond comprehension.
i have no problem paying my fair share but you have to ask yourself when 46 to 48 pct of this population pay no FEDERAL income tax are you telling me that 46 to 48% of the country are poor? dont think so. so why would you ask the other 52% who pay federal income tax to pay more?
unions have corrupted this country and have made us uncompetitive on a global basis where we sell our products.before you blame repubs for outsourcing it was bill clinton that pushed NAFTA and GATT. do you remember ross perot and that sucking sound of jobs leaving the country?i could go on and on but its not worth it.
when you get older and have to make a payroll, mortgage your future to run a business, lay awake at night because some federal gumbas are going to shut your project down because of an endangered blade of grass you will understand why conservatives are the way they are.if all you do is collect a paycheck from an employer you will never understand.thats whats wrong with have a community organizer running a capitalistic country thats out of money.
in california the teachers union now has starting scholl in early august so they can coordinate vacations for teachers?i am just as frustrated as you but from a different angle.the left cant accept that the country doesnt want a welfare state of a nation.

Spoken like a true democrat. The president does not “lead” congress … the American people lead congress. Congress works for the American people – not the president. They should follow the will of the people, not the president. Their main reason for Congress’s existence is to put checks on the president – not do his bidding.
Jeez …. people who elected this guy should be embarrassed.

Republicans are really Democrats and just don’t know it. The majority, earn a wage, pay health insurance, pay a mortgage etc. They might be a little better off than their neighbors.
They vote Republican beacuse they think corporate CEOs and businessmen are smarter than the average coal miner, steelworker , truckdriver , etc an should run the country. They think if they vote Republican they are somehow part of that elite upper crust. Its an ego trip

TFERRETTI – I’m guessing you don’t know any republicans because if you did, you’d know that most cast their vote based on issues and candidate likability – just like democrats.
Many of the richest people and CEOs in the country are actually democrats – not republicans. It’s no secret – you can google your favorite CEO or rich dude and find out party affiliation, political contributions, fundraising activities, etc. Sure, some are republicans, but certainly not all or most. The most famous and the richest are in fact democrats, not republican (think Oprah, Bill Gates, George Soros, etc.).
So according your logic, if republicans vote republican because they think CEOS are smarter, you’d pretty much have to say the same about democrats …. they vote for candidates simply because they feel CEOs are smarter than them?
Posted by: say what? | August 10, 2011, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm
ego trip? thats why people vote republican? dont think so. its much simplier than that.its do you want control over some of your life or do you want someone else to control it. pretty simple. do you want gay history taught in school at the expense of math or science. do you want grades or do do you want particpation ribbons. it s pretty simple.its individualism versus communism.

CATMAN
I don’t know where you work, but where I do hundreds of working people are paying their taxes. Statistics can be skewed in favor of any issue. Should I assume that since GE paid no taxes on 14 billion in profits that no busineesses pay taxes.
You and I have
A 40 hour workweek
Get OT if we work longer
Work 5 days a week instead of 6
Work in safe conditions
Get some holidays off
Get a fair wage.
Have health insurance
Receive social security.
And more.
You can thank those guys the manned the picket lines for all this.
If the labor unions were still strong in this country, all this out-sourcing would be challenged.
Try to tell a coal miner or steelworker how bad the unions are.
the multi-nationals allegence is not to this country. Their allegence is to their bottom line. I don’t blame the corporate CEOs and business owners, thats what they get paid to do but their interests are not the same as mine or the millions of hard working people in this country.

CATMAN AND SAYWHAT,
Then your a good man. You and I synbolize the differences between Republicans and Democrats.
I beleive that a government elected by the people, no matter how imperfect, can intiate programs, provide for our defense, help those who truly deserve help, and generally make the lives of hard working people better.
I might be wrong, but I feel the Republicans think all this would work better if we left it to the rich and powerful to do. You might have a point but its never worked in the history of the world and it won’t now.
Posted by: tferretti | August 10, 2011, 2:34 pm 2:34 pm
SAYWHAT
I’m not saying that all corporate CEOs are evil men, Republicans or Democrats. I am saying that their interest are not the same as the majority of Americans.
This idea that if we eliminate the taxes and regulations on big busineess our problems are over is ridiculous.
Businesses aren’t investing because thet have no customers. The law od supply and demand is still in effect.
What shold GM do, build a million cars and put them in storage until people can afford or are not afraid to buy them.
If the goernment wants to help, it should eliminate taxes on or fund small companies that have new ideas and allow then to compete with these large corporations that stiffle our economy.
Posted by: tferretti | August 10, 2011, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm
This government should put 3 to 4 trillion dollars into the economy. Borrow it if you have too or tax the hell out of those Americans who enjoy the benefits that this society has given them.
The middle class will spend the hell out of the money and businesses will hire to meet the demand.
Businesses do not hire people out of the goodness of their hearts. In fact if they can make the same profits with less people it is in their interest to do so.
Businesses hire more people to fulfill consumer demand.
Obamas stimulus stopped the bleeding but it wasn’t nearly enough to get this economy moving again. Do that and watch the deficit melt away, Clinton knew this.
Posted by: tferretti | August 10, 2011, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm
On the contrary, I am totally opposed to this President, to the Democrats squanderous spending, and to the Democrats general behavior, and conduct.
They have become anti-American, dictator type people, of the worst kind.
I have plenty of problems with the GOP, as well, but the Dems are destroying this country, from within.
Posted by: Rick McDaniel | August 10, 2011, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm
Americans are not going to spend money they don’t have or are afraid they won’t have.
The way out of this recession is to restore consumer confidence. Get people to buy things, cars appliainces etc. Business won’t hire (and rightfully so) if no one can buy their products.
It’s not rocket science

THANK YOU! Mr. Bloomberg for standing up to support our President.
It is about time someone had the nerve to stand up and say something — I haven’t even heard Clinton say anything — the politics stinks of late. He is our President, this is our country and we do support him and not tear him and our country down because the right has a hissy fit. I am sick and tired of watching this highschool stuff. Strange how we were falling behind in education, health care, wages, and job creation before Obama was even elected and yet some of you were apparently among the people who refused to see it. My husband and I have seen it coming for at least ten years.
Too many people were riding on this country is the greatest, the richest, etc. while other countries were moving ahead. Complacency kills a country and an economy. Keep sitting on your behinds complaining or get off your butts and do something constructive that will help the areas where we’ve fallen behind, if it’s not already too late for us to catch up.

I am politely pointing out that we do NOT have to get behind Obama. If he ever actually embraced democratic principles (and that is a big if), he’s abandoned them. He’s too busy embracing Reagan’s memory and passing republican ideals into laws.
I won’t vote for a fake democrat any more than I would vote for a republican or a libertarian/tea party candidate. I’ll be looking at and voting for third party candidates. Third parties have to start somewhere with someone. I think this is the somewhere and I plan to the someone whether in 2012 or 2030.

He didn’t.
He said, “YOU should care for the poor”.
Don’t use government to take money from one person and give it to another in order that you can deceive yourself into thinking that this makes you a generous person, or that you have fulfilled the commands of Christ by doing so.
Give your OWN money to the poor, not someone else’s money. Then you will be obeying Christ and following His example.
