Government Shutdown Looming? Nah.
Once again Congress is tied up in knots over how to fund the government — complete with dire warnings that a critical agency, in this case FEMA, is about to run out of money and that the entire government could shut down by week’s end.
Here’s what you need to know: the government will not shutdown. FEMA will not run out of money. Congress can’t seem to do anything anymore without going into crisis mode, but top Democrats and Republicans in Congress tell me there is no doubt that this will be resolved.
Here’s what’s going on:
Congress must pass a funding bill before the fiscal year ends on Friday. FEMA also needs emergency disaster money to keep it running for the rest of this year — until the end of the week.
The showdown — which will play out with a Senate vote tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. — boils down to this: House Republicans passed a temporary funding bill last week but they off-set FEMA’s emergency money with about $1.5 billion in spending cuts to two alternative energy loan programs. Senate Democrats voted down the House bill because they oppose those cuts.
The off-setting cuts for the FEMA emergency funding represent a tiny portion of the overall bill to keep the government funded. And this is the only part of the bill in dispute.
There are three ways this dispute can be resolved — and will be resolved by Monday evening:
1: At 5:30, if Senate Democrats get the 60 votes they need to pass the bill without the off-setting cuts, the House will be forced to come back from recess and pass the new bill with Democratic support.
2: At 5:30, if Senate Democrats fail to get the 60 votes — and I believe this is more likely — they would be forced to pass the House bill and accept the cuts they don’t like.
3: The entire issue could be resolved before the 5:30 vote. How? The Administration is working to find accounting maneuvers that would enable it to find enough money to keep FEMA running for the rest of the week without more cash from Congress. If that happens, there will no longer be a need to have off-setting cuts and the dispute will be over.
At any rate, I am told FEMA is will now likely not run out of money on Tuesday as it previously warned.

Reid needs to be tarred and feathered just like they did in the 1800′s. Congress needs to FEAR the people!!!

Exactly. Our majority democrat congress hasnt passed a budget in over 900 days (way before Boehner took office) why we again have a budget crisis is no mystery to anyone. The fact Reid didnt pass Boehner’s budget plan shows you squarely who is to blame.
Posted by: Guesswho | September 26, 2011, 7:36 am 7:36 am
Reid needs to be dismissed for this. Who in their right mind would not pass this bill? Who in their right mind would go to the bank and take out a 20k loan days after they bought a new car or made a horrible investment that left them broke. This is the problem, democrats are a very very bad influence on the American people. Yea blame them for the housing meltdown, wall street meltdown. They need to show their ignorant followers how to live with in their means. People are acting just like the Democrats and are not being responsible. Do you not care about your children or grandchildren? Are we so selfish we would steal their future? Well you democrats did and you like it. AMAZING! Sign the bill dummy Reid, resign or just go away. If you think for one minute you can blow money and just print up more your insane. I am in shock you democrats cannot see what your doing to this great nation. Its appauling

emergency money with about $1.5 billion in spending cuts to two alternative energy loan programs.
WHY are the democrats against cutting funds to a bankrupt company, Solyndra? YEA that is why they turned down this bill is because it cuts funding to them. Reid and company still want to throw OUR money at a bankrupt, corrupted company that has already filed for BANKRUPTCY protection. What is wrong with you democrats and why are you wanting to throw our money to them? Please enlighten me and all the other responsible folks on here today!?

Three months? They know this is coming every year. And every year they fight over it. Some years it gets up to the last minute and then a CR (Continuing Resolution) is passed, just so the agony can be extended you understand, and then another CR is passed three months later. Sometimes all the way up until April when a budget – for the year they’re currently halfway through – will be passed. I mean it happens every year, it’s not like they didn’t know it was coming.

“House Republicans passed a temporary funding bill last week but they off-set FEMA’s emergency money with about $1.5 billion in spending cuts to two alternative energy loan programs. Senate Democrats voted down the House bill because they oppose those cuts.”
In other words, House Republicans simply are incapable once again of passing a clean bill. Why didn’t they make these $1.5 billion in offsetting cuts from, say, Big Oil subsidies? Or corporate jet tax deductions? The Republicans are, once again, looking to kill off funding for alternative energy because their corporate masters over at Exxon have told them to. Republicans whine and complain about ‘how much money we send overseas for oil’, when it is abundantly clear that their policies are designed to PROTECT that status quo. And the sheep on the Right still believe every drop of crap that comes out of the Republican politicians’ mouths……

Solyndra is one of those energy companies they want to cut the funding to. You would have known that if you would have read some featured articles on Friday. Get real people, they are being so stupid. They have already filed bankruptcy protection so why are they hording those funds? CUT THEM!

“emergency money with about $1.5 billion in spending cuts to two alternative energy loan programs” WHY are the democrats against cutting funds to a bankrupt company, Solyndra?
Posted by: Smarthinking | September 26, 2011, 8:39 am.
You clearly do not understand this, let me explain it for you. Solyndra isn’t getting any more money. The PROGRAMS that loaned them that money is what the Republicans are targeting. Republicans are using Solyndra as an excuse to try and end ALL alternative energy research funding for every company that is trying to figure out a way to end our dependence on foreign fossil fuels. Because their corporate masters don’t want to change a damn thing regarding the hundreds of billions we spend with the oil companies. Get it?

The re-election of Harry Ried is the best think that could have happenned to Obama. He saves Obama from having to veto everthing that comes out of the House and Senate. With unemployment literally the worse the worse in the country, the only thing I can figure is Harry really brings home the bacon to Nevada. Either that or the cowboy poets are a strong unionized voting block.
Posted by: newcountryman | September 26, 2011, 9:09 am 9:09 am
If our government insists on sticking their nose in private businesses like Solyndra then I want them to cut funding. They are only wasting our money and trying to support businesses that obviously cannot compete. We need to get out of the business of supporting bad investments and using Solyndra as an example cut the funding if this is how they choose to waste our tax money. Obama can barely function in his job and we have no business allowing him or the democrats to invest our money in anything if this is the result. Democrats have always tried to support the underdog and its killing us. Stop it now while we have country left.

Thanks for spelling out the whole “Solyndra” debacle for people who just don’t get it. Solyndra filed for bankruptcy, but that doesn’t end the quest for new, clean energy. President Obama does not want to end that quest, but Republicans are da*mned and determined to hold up progress, especially under President Obama.

The program gives loans to car companies to pay for things such as factory upgrades and the development of new, green, fuel efficient technology, and Democrats say the cuts would cost up to 10,000 jobs.”

Searambler, that is a easy answer. This administration has wasted so much money with no results and why prop up a industry that is not feasible right now. Obama blew it for giving them a half billion. He was warned not to do it but knowing much more than anybody else, well like Obamacare you can see the results, not good.

“its Still Amazing That These Cut, Cap, and Balance People Didn’t ever Show Up During The BUSH ADMINISTRATION.”

LOL!…. so true. Republicans = The Party that is ‘fiscal conservative’ ONLY when they no longer control the White House…
Nixon / Ford accumulated debt = $292 billion, raising the nation’s debt to a balance of $655.0 billion
Carter accumulated debt = $280 billion, raising the nation’s debt to a balance of $935 billion
And what was so-called ‘fiscal conservative’ Republican Reagan’s accumulated debt?
ANSWER: “$1.7 Trillion”… (equal to almost twice the total combined debt… $935 billion… of all 39 presidents before him combined)… LOL! … raising the nation’s debt balance to $2.7 Trillion.
***** Reagan set the new “Reagan standard” of “TRILLIONS”-per-president” debt increases, instead of “billions-per-president” debt increases, as it was under Carter and every other president before Carter. *****
Bush # 1 debt increase = $1.4 Trillion (and Bush had to raise taxes to get it under the “Reagan Standard”)…. but, we fired him for that…. raising the debt balance to $4.1 Trillion.
Clinton debt increase = $1.6 Trillion, raising the debt balance to $5.7 Trillion
And what was so-called ‘fiscal conservative’ (LOL!) Republican George W. Bush’s accumulated debt?
ANSWER: “$4.9 Trillion… raising the nation’s debt balance to $10.6 Trillion.
***** Once again, another Republican sets the new standard for “debt increase-per-president” for all presidents after him to follow. From Reagan’s “~2 trillion per president” to the new “Bush Standard” of “~5 trillion per president” *****
As I said in the beginning, Republicans have PROVEN over the past 30 years, Republicans = The Party that is ‘fiscal conservative’ ONLY when they no longer control the White House. Under both Reagan and Bush-2, when they got the White House back… it became “party time”… LOL!… concern about the debt went “bye-bye”.
Sort of makes me afraid to vote for a “fiscal conservative” Republican again…. he may just end up setting up a new standard of “$20 Trillion-per- president”.

Vote out all bible thumping religious fanatics and tea bagging wacko’s in 2012. We must work together as a nation in times of disaster. The money appropriated for the Northeast needs to be a clean bill. The obstructionists are now creating a crisis each time a bill comes up by tying other program cuts to them. This is shear insanity. When these disasters take place we all share. If these fools want to cut programs why not cut all foreign aid and all funds supporting phony wars and occupations, bring home all the troops and close down all foreign bases. We would not have to worry about funding for SS / Medicare and we could rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Vote out all radical Republicans that have proved they can’t govern. The no compromise, my way or the highway crowd wont get it, they have to go if the fast disappearing middle class and the nation is to survive.

Not for holding it up, but for adding in completely unrelated program cuts that are odious to Democrats and could lead to the loss of thousands more jobs – yes. Absolutely. Why didn’t the House send through a clean bill? Like they have ALWAYS done in the past? Because they knew damn well that adding in these cuts would make it objectionable to the Democrats, who actually are trying to NOT deliberately cause more job losses. It is a purely political and very cynical ploy on the part of the House that Boehner Built (but lost control of to the TeaBaggers)……….

Considering all of the money thrown away in the Solyndra fiasco. Over $500 million in the trash when over 30 states got less for promised infrastructure. This administration is mismanaged to the nth degree. No budget since 2007, even with an uncontested super-majority. 4.1 billing in spending a day and the job creating stimulus resulted in few new jobs. Now they want more stimulus money to squander!! Pitiful!
Obama makes the spendthrift Bush look fiscally responsible. I didn’t think he would make it worse…but he managed and in such a short time. Who would-a-thought!!

The unions have been weak for years. It’s too bad, they were the only voice the common man had. Do you honestly think all the out-sourcing would happen if the unions had a say. If you think continuing to reward big business and the wealthy will turn this recession around you are sadly mistaken.
The president has proposed a jobs program. Most of it is what the republicans have wanted for years and he’s willing to negotiate about the rest. The republicans have one agenda, making sure this recession continues into 2012 so the president doesn’t get re-elected.
They’re in for a big shock, Americans know the game they’re playing.

tferretti…the only voice the common man always had was his own. when you broker out your future to others you are beholden to their wishes.
big business? how about small business which is the engine of this economy and over regulation is killing it. hopefully a good compromise will come out of the jobs bill but i believe the more money you leave with job creators the greater the chance of jobs being created. opening up oil and gas exploration is a no brainer. obamas policies address symptoms rather than the cause. continuing to fund incompetence only leads to further incompetence. he need s to incentivize rather than punish those who create jobs. siding with people who pay no income tax will not lead to jobs.
Posted by: catman | September 26, 2011, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm
I’d agree if it wasn’t for this recession. Business owners, small and large, are not going to (invest, create jobs) when no customers are walking through their doors. Also siding with people who don’t pay their fair share won’t create jobs either. We need to eliminate the fear in the economy, the quickest way to do that is to get people working again, whether its the government or the private sector makes no difference.
