to imply that someone who spent over $100K to get a degree in ‘Child and Family Studies’ is smarter than someone who read the same books for the price of a library card is plain ignorant.

Sounds like you didn't learn a lot at college Larry.

Larry: You do have a point, some degrees are basket weaving, how many psychology grads can't do anything with their degrees and end up going back to school such as radiology, nursing or engineering? Know a few.

“America is a grotesque consumer based society that thinks it’s entitled to own, consume and squander anything and everything on God’s green earth to its dumb, selfish gratification. From Indian lands to slaves the country was built on greed and plunder.”

I agree. Please move to Venezuela. I have an opening in my cabinet for an assistant to my Information Minister.

Sorry Hugo, there are many of us who will stay here and quietly, strongly help to make it a better, smarter place.

Larry: As I recall the Soviet Union was a threat post world war II, the other military super power, and if you are referring to the Wright brothers, hmm, need to go back as far as Da Vinci, they derived the concept from him and others who made those attempts. Building blocks of prior scientists to current ones. The Soviet and American space program were developed with their respective government monies, but were minded by HItler's science rocket Scientists both sides. Werner Von Braun ring a bell?

Just because someone argues against everybody going to college, no matter their aptitude, and racking up a mountain of financial debt in exchange for a degree they may not be able to apply in the real world, doesn't make them opposed to education. Abraham Lincoln only had eighteen months of formal education, yet I'd put his up against most people who have benefited from what passes for 'higher learning' these days.

Don't take my word for it, look at what The Bureau of Labor Statistics says are the most useless college majors:
Major / Median starting salary / Median mid-career salary
Child and Family Studies / $29,500 / $38,400
Horticulture / $35,000 / $50,800
Art / $33,500 / $54,800
Music / $36,700 / $57,000
Theater / $35,300 / $59,600
Fine Arts / $35,400 / $60,300
Photography / $35,100 / $61,200
Art History / $39,400 / $57,100
Animal Science / $34,600 / $62,100
Psychology / $35,300 / $62,500

Students who graduate with those degrees are in debt up to their ears and have put-off their careers (i.e. making money) to do so. Is it any coincidence that this racket benefits the colleges and universities that Obama hails from? Sure, if you have what it takes to become a doctor or an engineer, go for it. But to say it's for everbody is a lie, and to imply that someone who spent over $100K to get a degree in 'Child and Family Studies' is smarter than someone who read the same books for the price of a library card is plain ignorant.

The typical american is fat, uneducated, willfully ignorant and basically stupid . That's how the rest of the world views America.
When I read that line several months ago I was angry, but then I just finished reading the comment section on this article.
I don't know about the fat part, but for many of you who wrote such utter drivel and oppose education I can only say the opening sentence serves you well.

There is an interesting parallel with energy (for those still capable of thinking for themselves).

While people bicker and argue over which energy sources are better, they continue to waste energy in huge measure and there is no concerted effort to get them to smarten up and quit squandering.

The entire American model of the consumer economy seems to also be built on gross consumption and squandering. Same with energy.

Not sure how long either stupid approach can last. It could be time for new paradigms.
