Unemployment is the most lagging indicator to improve when coming out of a recession. Economists have been saying for close to a decade that consumer spending is carrying the economic recovery and if businesses don't start spending again, the recovery is a two-legged stool. Clearly someone has to spend to pull the nose out of the dive. Who will it be if consumers stop spending, and those with jobs actually start saving for the first time in a long while. Is the answer the same as what pulled the nation out of the great depression? So one of the pivotal disagreements as I see it is whether a legitimate role of government is to be the spender (and hirer) of last resort when all else has dried up. We've been running deficits for decades (with the exception of a brief period in the late nineties) — during the good times as well as the bad, so is there a reason now is the time to suddenly cut the legs out from under the government?

American business are sitting on trillions of dollars, but they are waiting to invest those dollars in people. The primary reason: the current occupant of the White House. Obama has not done enough to instill confidence or incentivize business to put that money into the American economy.

Plus, job growth shouldn't be measured on how fast companies add jobs. It should be determined how secure they are. I'd gladly take 240,000 jobs a month over 350,000 if the growth is sustainable. After all, easy come, easy go.

@lisa - yes, govt can create jobs. Look at all the jobs created by the construction of the interstates. Look at all the jobs created by govt contracts to private business. OF COURSE govt can create jobs. The govt can create millions of jobs through the rebuilding of the nation's infrastructure. No private company is going to do this alone, they want/need federal backing.

RHONDA--"“Irons said 11.5 million jobs, or about 240,000 per month, is a ‘fairly modest target’ because most economists would expect about 300,000 to 350,000 jobs to be created per month when the economy is coming out of a recession.”
Interesting. The recession was declared officially ended in June 2009. Have we had any jobs, overall, created per month (let alone 300,000 – 350,000) in the 26 months we have been coming out of the recession? -----

Good luck getting the media to pick up on that... last month the net Job growth was ZERO yet the unemployment did not change??? wonder why that is?? Oh yeah, the same reason that it went from 8.8 to 8.4 last january even though only 100,000 jobs were created.. BECAUSE THEY CHANGED THE WAY THEY CALCULATE IT... Now the unemploymnt rate is being calculated using the "adjusted" available jobs rate. in other words, the more people who are out of a job the more the "total workforce" declines in the calculations.. Same way the administration removed Food and energy costs from the inflation rates so they could print 3 trillion dollars without causing inflation to rise... Want to know what the REAL unemployment rate is (I mean the real U-3 number that is quoted each month as being around 9.2%).... the real number is 11.1% Just like real inflation is about double the numbers that are currently being reported... Welcome to the REAL smoke and mirrors...

Hello America, now thats a good question, can Mitt Romney delver 11.5 Million new jobs? well we know that Barrack Obama cannot deliver even one job, so what hope does Romney have of delivering 11.5 Million Jobs? I would say highly unlikely. so the better solution is to repeal Obamacare, roll back Federal Payroll deductions to 1940's levels, eliminate most, most of the unneccesary Federal Pork barrel programs, such as Shrimp Treadmill research, recover the $60 Billion dollars unaccounted for given to Afghanistan and Iraq, redue the 1040 form and make it fair for everyone. those are the most logical solutions, so please contact your congressman or woman and have them say No to anymore Obama Bailouts and No to a $400 Billion Dollar package. sincerely Fezzy Bear

Barb--"Yes Kay it’s all about politics and the votes…exactly! Read my post. I will not listen to them anymore..it’s all garbage. Again, if they really cared they would have ALL worked together with this president to try and fix things. All I see and hear is bickering and I’m tired of it all."-- i understand your frustration, but understand this..the reason many are NOT working with the president to FIX things is because what he wants to do is going to make things WORSE - much worse.. This president has not tried towork with anyone either.. Passing a healthcare bill using back door agreements after promising to "be the most transparent administration in history" is a joke, and refusing to compromise on a balanced budget ammendment when even the people at Standard and Poor's stated that it was the ONLY thing that could have prevented the downgrade.. Remember when the president told us all to turn down the rhetoric after the Gifford's shooting? So where was he when Hoffa opened a speech for him saying that the union's needed to "take the SOBs out"? Why couldn't his press corp renounce that? he drew the line in the sand when he told republicans that they would have to get in the back of the bus...He has gotten everything he has asked for passed, yet it has not helped..We are deeper in debt, we have more unemployment, more inflation, and less growth than anytime since Carter.. And yet there is not one single thing that he has pushed that has failed to be passed.. not one.. WE NEED TO BLOCK HIS ACTIONS, before things get worse...
