Vice President Joe Biden would not personally confirm the death of Moammar Gadhafi this afternoon but said that the Libyan people have “gotten rid of a dictator.”

“Gadhafi is gone,” Biden told reporters in Plymouth, N.H. “Whether he’s alive or dead…the people of Libya have gotten rid of a dictator of 40 years who I personally knew…this is one tough, not so nice guy.”

The Vice President praised NATO for its role in outing the oppressive leader, saying “NATO got it right and guess what? Libya, Gadhafi one way or another is gone.”

Biden also defended the U.S. strategy in Libya. “In this case America spent two billion dollars total and didn’t lose a single life. This is more the prescription for how to deal with the world as we go forward than it has been in the past,” Biden said. “So this is an example of how the world’s beginning to work together a little bit better.”
