Cain’s interview with Piers Morgan Wednesday night may have left many of his supporters confused. While he reiterated his opposition to abortion in all cases, he acknowledged the right of the individual and the family to make personal decisions.
But the businessman-turned-politician has muddied the waters even more with a tweet. This afternoon @THEHermanCain tweeted “I’m 100% pro-life. End of story.”
Needless to say, this raises many questions, some that can’t be answered in 140 characters.
A call to his campaign yielded an angry “Mr. Cain is 100% pro-life. End of story.” They plan to send out a statement later today. It remains to be seen how Cain will backtrack on other recent comments, something he’s had to do a lot lately:
Electrified fence to keep illegal immigrants out? It was just a joke, Cain said.
Release prisoners from Guantanamo in exchange for Americans? Cain said he didn’t realize they were talking about terrorists. A Cain administration won’t negotiate with terrorists.
What about Americans having the right to reject a mosque getting built in their community? “Muslims, like all Americans, have the right to practice their faith freely and peacefully,” Cain explained.
Already, Cain’s rivals have pounced on his latest apparent slip-up. Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania is even planning a campaign event to address the abortion issue specifically.
Cain ran his Georgia Senate campaign in 2004 on his being a staunch conservative, especially on the issue of abortion rights. No abortions under any circumstances, he said. In the past, he has indicated he would sign legislation that would protect the “sanctity of life” and support defunding Planned Parenthood on his belief that one of the organization’s goals was to lower the number of African-American children.
