Bachmann Assails GOP Field in New Web Ad

GOP contender Rep. Michele Bachmann released a web ad Tuesday attacking most of her Republican competition for switching positions on policies, or avowing ideas that are not in lock step with conservative ideology.

The ad titled “No Surprises 2012? opens with the question: “Who is the consistent conservative?”

It then cobles video clips of her competition being less than “consistently conservative,” starting with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney saying, “I believe abortion should be safe and legal in this country” and “I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose.”

Since running for president, Romney has said he is anti-abortion rights.

The ad also includes Herman Cain, who insists  he is “100 percent pro-life” but said in a recent CNN interview that abortion “ultimately gets down to a choice that that family or that mother has to make.”

Bachmann also assails Texas Rep. Ron Paul for saying Iran should be entitled to build a nuclear weapon and Texas Gov. Rick Perry for supporting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

The video also includes a clip from a commercial former House Speaker Newt Gingrich made with Democrat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that calls for a bipartisan effort to curb global warming.

The ad ends with the words “Don’t settle.”

“No surprises” is a theme Bachmann has struck on the stump in recent weeks. She began saying voters could expect “no surprises” from her as a veiled jab against the harassment allegations that surfaced against  Herman Cain. Later she began using the idea to suggest voters would not see surprise changes in policy from her.

On Tuesday, Bachmann also launched an accompanying website: www.nosurprises2012.com.

This is the most negative ad yet from Bachmann, a Minnesota House member, who after skyrocketing in the polls last summer has since languised  in the single digits.

Bachmann did not include former Utah Gov. John Huntsman and former Sen. Rick Santorum, both of whom score lower in the polls than Bachmann, in the ad.
