You can't move a family in a car that gets 50 mpg, you cannot take a trip in a car that gets 50 mpg. The whole point is to make personal car ownership so expensive that mass transit becomes a feasible alternative, because right now it isn't for most Americans or for most American Cities.

Autos cost as much as a house now because we have to pay for the unions members healthcare and retirement and then cars don't last five years. Stop mandating and get out of our lives!

"Sorry repugs, if we don’t change and if we stop striving to the future, we are doomed." - RaggMopp

Completely right Raggy.
We need to change and stop spending ourselves into oblivion.
So far only the Tea Party folk are willing to fight for that change.
That's why both establishments, Demo and Repub fear them so much.

2012 Vote Conservative and save the country.

And why shouldn't we?

Oh, I get it. The repugs want to keep their big oil buddies flush in cash. No concern for the rest of us, no concern for country, no concern for trying to better ourselves through R&D.

Why do people want to keep technology that is over 100 yrs old? Yea, it works. Yea, it affordable - for now. But as a finite resource the cost is only going to rise. What happens next decade when the price of gas is so expensive that only the rich can drive? Let alone be able to afford an auto?

We can do better. When we do, the world will come knocking on our door looking for the solutions we developed. Rebuilding our country will come from rebuilding our infrastructure and looking forward to new technologies.

A definition of conservative is to not change. Sorry repugs, if we don't change and if we stop striving to the future, we are doomed.

Call me a progressive, I live in the USA where we look to the future. As opposed to neo-cons who want to stay the same. There are countries like that, Afghanistan comes to mind.

“Just think what this means,” - Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

OK, it means that this administration lives in La la Liberalistan.
They continue to try and force a square peg into a round hole.
If only they had a big enough hammer.
Fools.

Where there's a will there's a way! This is a very worthwhile goal. And if our engineers don't do this, someone else's will. Oil is a finite resource!

The dirty little secret is that there is no realistic plan which will take us from where we are today to 54.5 mpg! Either the requirement will need to change or the American economy will become paralyzed with only the "rich" able to afford to buy vehicles!

Wouldn't it just be easier to have King Obama mandate the purchase of Toyota Prius vehicles? No more GM, Chrysler, Ford. There, problem solved. Of course, Toyota may have to build a few more non-union plants in the U.S. Oh, wait. Never mind.
