Here's a better idea: Cut the federal payroll in half and use the money to pay down the debt.

What is needed is to replace the "999" symbol with "%" -- has everyone in Washington forgotten what a percentage represents? Why are they hung up on this group paying this much and that group not paying, etc, etc, etc? Establish a percentage and have EVERYONE pay that. That's FAIR. Everyone pays the same percentage. I read somewhere that 47% of the American taxpayers do not pay any income tax. Has everyone forgotten what our founding fathers wrote? "..All men are created equal..." and all men should pay a fair income tax. No one should pay more or less or none. Establishing a % is the only fair way to do it. And if anyone argues that isn't fair, you need to go back to school and re-learn math!!

The one and only reason the GOP is even at the table right now is that they'll be on the losing end of this mess if they allow the Payroll Tax rate to return to its normal level. They'll be painted as the biggest hypocrites in the world ("We need to keep the Bush Tax Cuts") AND come across as only caring about the 1% ("We need to keep the Bush Tax Cuts for the rich"). Just get it done without any of the amendment and posturing nonsense.

Its all about the power!" ********************** No, the administration wanted the losers to be millionaires who would have to pay a tax. Instead, Republicans what the civil service to have to pay with a continued pay freeze and increase in what we pay for our retirement system. I serve my country, I shouldn't be victimized for that.

The class warriors are looking like Charlie Brown again as president Lucy pulls back his pathetic little 20 billion a yr surtax on millionaires.

Meanwhile it's a win-win for Barry. He gets to destroy social security and he gets to demagogue republicans.

The Democrats appear to have given up on getting millionaires to pay for the payroll tax holiday extension, which means that the civil servants will have to pay for it. Giving one group of middle class Americans a whole lot less to spend to give another group of middle class Americans a little more to sopend does not result in a net increase in spending, so this proposal will not stimulate the economy. Also, I am would be taxed by this proposal to help pay for Social Security, but I am not paying into Social Security and I will not collect from Social Security, so it is doubly unfair to me.
